Box 513, Grand Island, NY m The 2016 boating season has only just begun, but you may have noticed that our clubhouse, grounds and docks have already undergone significant changes there is more yet to come. The roof project which was undertaken in earnest in April will be concluded in the coming days. The project committee, led by Vice Commodore Dan Brown, has met with Switala Inc. to reconcile two (2) specific concerns related to the installation. One, that the snow guards are too large (unattractive) and two, that the gutters are too small. As a result smaller and less obtrusive snow guards will be installed above the entry and walkways (including the garage) while the gutters and select downspouts will be replaced (resized larger). These changes will occur at no additional cost and documentation will be provided certifying all warranty provisions when the work is completed, before our outstanding balance (50%) is paid. This past week, fresh blacktop was laid (with the assistance of Director Jose Garcia) placing the finishing touches on the break wall project that was started in the Fall of 2015 under the direction of Past Commodore Ray Ode and Treasurer Steve Vathy. Countless man hours have been expended at minimal expense to the Club in excavating, replacing and compacting the substrate at the water s edge. You will also notice that a new electrical line has been laid connecting the garage to the lighted sign in the street facing flowerbed and that both the inner and outer lots have been restriped through the expertise and resourcefulness of Rear Commodore Dave Krotz. On the docks, the end of the Small T has been reconstructed and re-decked, additional boards have been replaced and fingers have been re-stained under the watchful eye of Fleet Captain Alex Dzadur. Please anticipate the restoration of Wi-Fi Internet access at the Docks once the roof project has concluded. In the coming months, the ceiling tiles in the clubhouse will be replaced with newer tiles that have been donated to the club, while the light fixtures are upgraded to more highly efficient options in conjunction with a grant (in application) from National Grid. Don Freidman has taken the lead in planning, design and procuring the materials required to complete this project. A committee has been formed under the Direction of the Vice Commodore that will coordinate the installations with no disruption to use of the Club. In closing, I would like to thank our Officers, Board of Directors and General Membership for all of their efforts in support of our Club and our mission to promote friendship and fellowship through our shared appreciation of waterfront activities and each other. 2 It s been a busy month and now the docks are open. We had our Saturday club clean-up on April 23rd, and many thanks to all who came out. Thanks to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of Don Freedman, we assembled a small group to retrieve slightly-used white ceiling tiles from an office of Delaware North who was moving to their new building. Thanks to Dave Krotz for his truck and trailer, and Steve Vathy for assembling a small group to retrieve these. The club will be installing these tiles and also replacing lighting in the main club this summer. Details will be forthcoming. It will be done in stages, not to interrupt any club functions or events. By now you have all mostly seen the new blue metal roof which is being installed and modified. In negotiation with the installer, we will be upgrading to wider gutters and downspouts, changing out the snow-guard to a smaller profile, and several other required changes. The committee formed will ensure the remaining work is done during non-club use times. If there are any questions, please see one of our committee members (Dave Bissonette, Dave Duchscherer, Italo, Dave Krotz, Steve Vathy, or myself). New striping was also done in both parking lots and the seawall, and small gate areas were repaired with new asphalt. Thanks to Ray, Jose, and others for getting this done so timely. Lastly, I want to mention that as the boats come in for the season, I will make an effort this week to get the Wi-Fi up and running again. Frank Spagnolo, Secretary As the weather is getting warmer, the docks are filling up with boats and summer activity is everywhere at Sandy Beach Yacht Club. It is always wonderful to see all the members and mates after a long winter separation. The boating season is officially OPEN! Our Father's Day TGIF is slated for June 17. The W/O will be serving our famous ½ chicken dinner with the fixins. We will have our meat raffle too! It s a great time! See flyer coming out soon! Reuben sandwiches are on the menu for our TGIF on July 1. The TGIF will be in lieu of the Pot Luck dinner so Dad's can have a free day to do whatever "floats their boat". Attention all ladies...the Women's Organization board meetings are open to all. We encourage any women who are curious about the happenings at these meetings to come and see for yourselves. Bob has been working for the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and we're grateful to him for extending such free service to our membership. P/C David Fleischman At the SBYC Board meeting on May 18, 2016, Benjamin Freedman presented to Sandy Beach Yacht Club a large scale laminated wood map of Grand Island and the surrounding waterways. Ben made this map while in Tech Club at Grand Island Senior High School and wanted to make it a gift to our club. He entered many data points taken from our nautical chart and used them to laser cut each layer of the map. He then laminated the layers to create this work of art. This picture shows Ben Freedman presenting his topographical map to Commodore Baldassarre. Hello from your cruise director, Dir. Hoch and I have spoken to Jim Maloney from River Oaks Marina and he advised that he is having Strictly Hip play at the Marina on June 18, 2016 in the afternoon, and he said that he could accommodate as many SBYC boats as we would like to bring at no cost and they are welcome to stay the night. Along with the band there will be a beer truck and food trucks there. This sounds like a fun way to get out and enjoy a night away without going far.
