Matthew put a little damper on our Maritime event, but we rallied well with the Halloween themed General meeting, and I heard the Golf Event was another great hit! We have a new Ships Store operator. One way or another Laura Wells volunteered to take responsibility of the Ships Store. At the General meeting, and while on the phone in the parking lot with her employer, Laura was somehow able to signal Pete to volunteer her for the position! If anyone is looking for any FBYC merchandise, please contact Laura. Remember, this is a new chapter in Laura s FBYC experience, so be patient as she learns the ropes. The FBYC Secretary will cast one ballot on behalf of the entire club for the slate of 2017 Officers. As a past commodore I knew things would be fine and they were. Judging by the pictures of the Halloween meeting and after meeting get together at the Lion, is seems everyone had a great time. Thanks again to Nancy Espstein and Judy O Neill for thanking the lead on the October meeting. I saw some pictures and the costumes this year were excellent. Continued on next Page

Once again the pie is coming from Messaluna s so you know you do not want to miss this one. We decided to postpone the food drive until the November meeting. Denise Green will be the lead and we ll get a blast out before the meeting. On October 27 we had the Pine Lakes Golf outing. There were 20 golfers and over 40 members at the social. The prize for closest to the pin went to Betsy Kelly for the second year in a row. The women s long drive went to guest Nancy Velardi with the men s won by LaRue Overton. The longest putt was sunk by Fred Ciaburri. The winning foursome of Rich Gallagher, Eddie Urbie, Jay Steinmeier and John Green had a low 9 hole score of 36.

The cost this year is $50 for members and $60 for guests. The last time to sign up will November general meeting. 7 Page 7 Rear Commodore - Dee Cocchiola deecocchiola@gmail.com It s November. One word Holiday Season! Time to ponder the last (lost?) year. Time to think about the upcoming holiday festivities honoring Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year. The bright lights, the decorations, the food, the spiritual connection and the camaraderie. Many of us will be on the road in November and December to visit hometowns, renew old ties and celebrate the holidays with family and friends. But for those who aren t travelling, there s so much to do here and so many FBYC clubmates with whom to share the fun. After all, our clubmates are our extended family and forever friends. One thing I ve always been impressed with in my 13 or so years with the FBYC is the closeness, the inclusiveness, of the club. Once you join, you ve got a built-in circle of friends with common interests. So, I d like to kick off this holiday season with a challenge to all members to reach out, to connect with other members. Invite them over, or out. If there s a party, invite someone new. Get together and visit some local towns and communities noted for their festive holiday spirit. Get involved with those who devote time to community activities for people in need. And for all members, old and new, get involved with club activities. Nothing builds friendships better than helping plan and organize a meeting, a Christmas party, a boating event. Yeah, I know it s a bit of work, but making new friends is worth it. So, for all of FBYC, enjoy the fun, friendship and boating this entire holiday season. We ll see you all at our November 17th meeting. Remember, our December meeting is the Christmas party on the 9th. If you haven t signed up, do it now. It is one of the highlights of our year. Rear Commodore Dee

8 Page 8 Michael Triano and Alan Hendry, Fleet Captains September 23 was the Pontoon trip in Astor. John and Joyce Yetter had the lead. 49 people signed up and 45 attended. Good weather and good fun for all. There was an unexpected windfall with the price being lowered at the last minute by the owner. This will result in a $10.00 rebate for all people that signed up to go. John did mention that there is a Subway close to the rental location that is a nice option if you want to bring food along in the future. A very big thank you to John and Joyce. October 6-9 was supposed to be the trip to New Smyrna Beach. Unfortunately it was canceled due to Hurricane Matthew. November will be the night of lights in St. Augustine. Toni & Bob Mincin have the lead. 15 boats are signed up. Saturday November 19 is the lighting ceremony so if you are not boating to the event, please come on down to the City Marina to visit in the afternoon around 3:00 pm.. December 11 will be Caroling on the Canals at 11:00 am.

9 Page 9 What Did Hurricane Matthew Teach Us? When Hurricane Matthew blew into the Flagler/Palm Coast area on October 7, we probably all thought we were pretty well prepared. Like many of us, I learned a few things and will be better prepared next time. The following covers a few things I learned and things that were passed on by neighbors and members of the FBYC. First, if there is any way to get yourself and your boat out of harms way that is the best plan. Whether that means out of the water or lift, or away from the threatened area, that is the best option. Of course that may not be an option. For yourself, evacuation may be a good plan. Things can be replaced, you can t. If your boat is going to remain in the water, you probably will need additional lines during a hurricane. If possible, add long lines that will handle the anticipated tide surge as well as the wind. Tying to trees or adding an additional piling or two well in advance may be a good option. At least one member was able to tie a line or two to the opposite side of the canal. Great move to take some stress off the boat and pilings. If your location allows an anchor or two they can serve the same purpose. Whatever method you choose, the lines must be able to handle the surge or you may find yourself adjusting them during the storm or, you may have serious damage to your boat and dock. Don t wait until storm day to begin thinking about what lines to add. Boats stored on lifts with or without a roof, present other challenges. If you plan to leave the boat on the a lift be sure you secure it to the lift or the dock and secure the lift to the pilings to reduce movement. Be sure the boat is raised as high as possible in the lift. If you have a trailer, use it to move the boat out of the storm surge threat area. For larger boats in a lift there is a real threat that storm surge could cause the boat to float. If the anticipated surge could cause the boat to float, you should probably move it out of the lift. We had members and neighbors that had boat and dock damage due to floating in the lift. Many older docks suffered damage or destruction doing the storm. This is a tough one. Nobody wants to replace a dock until absolutely necessary, but a weakened dock is not going to stay together under several feet of water. If you have a boat tied to an old dock you may lose both of them in the right storm. Floating docks have some advantages. They will rise and fall with the tides and they really simplify tying a boat up. Having cruised the canals a few days after the storm the downside to floating docks was apparent. Many floating docks simply floated up and over their pilings. If a boat was tied to it they both were off for an adventure. Many of the floating dock pilings are no more than three to four feet above a normal high tide which is just not sufficient. There are probably many more things for us to learn from the storm so this is by no means a comprehensive list. One thing I learned is the tide may rise more than you think so prepare for the worst. You really should develop your plan now and ensure you you have everything needed to put it in place when the time comes. Could be another ten years before the next Hurricane hits us or it could be next year. Be prepared.
