If you haven t signed on for our annual steak BBQ on June 12 th on the beach at Matanzas Inlet, please contact Co-Fleet Captain Michael Triano to reserve a spot. You can get there via car (we will transport you over to Rattlesnake Island) or by boat (a number of our captains have room for additional crew); cost to members is $5 (non-members $10), children under 14 free. Don t Birthdays 8 Ship Store 9 Treasure Hunt 11 Cinco de Mayo 12 Many thanks to leads Jeanne Meyer and Jack Cohen for a great Cinco de Mayo General Meeting last month. An event like this does not happen by itself, so thanks also go out to the Cinco crew of Doris Agee, Marsha Barry, Nick and Susan Bereda, Dedem Burek, Carol Caso, Dee Cocchiola, Dee Cohen, Barb Depietro, Len Dignard, John and Denise Green, JoAnn Hester, Patty Lindholm, Mickey Logemann, John Manoni, Ken Miller, Toni Mincin, Susan Moya, Vi Ruffalo, Bob and Lou Thousand, Bobbey Willson, and Lynn Uribe. Also, congratulations to Len Dignard for winning the chili cook-off!! Our Maritime Moment was a slide show of the 2015 Blessing of the Fleet put together by Bobbey Willson. What a great job she did syncing the slides with the radio voices of captains and the pastor giving the blessing! 2 Page 2 Commodore - Continued A few business items to note: (1) After much discussion on the Board level regarding membership, it was suggested that we institute a new membership catergory: Lifetime Member. The purpose of the new category is to honor those members with 20 or more years of membership. A By-Laws Committee will be formed, headed by Past Commodore Len Dignard, to examine the proposal so that it can be brought to the membership for a vote no later than the September meeting. In addition, the committee will review any other By-Law concerns that the membership makes known to the Board. If you are interested in volunteering for the committee, please contact me. (2) With the start of the new membership year, we will be looking for volunteers for the Election Committee. It will be formed officially in July and will work over the summer to present a slate of officers for the September meeting (remember we do not have a meeting in August). If you are interested in volunteering, please let me know. Our next General meeting will be held on June 18 and will feature Hot- dig it-y- dog night. Lead by master chef Jack Cohen, gourmet hot dogs with all the trimmings will be featured. Yummmm You better get there early before Franco eats them all!! Thanks to the membership and the Palm Coast and Flagler Beach communities for their strong support to ban commercial crab pots in our canals. We have been able to generate over 500 signatures on our petition to date. Stay well. And Safe boating!

Page 3 Vice Commodore Joe Lindholm cjlindholm@ameritech.net Well May was a busy month for our club with the KC dinner and dance, treasure hunt, and the chili cook off/cinco de Mayo themed General meeting. Once again, kudos to all the volunteers that make all of these events such great successes, GREAT JOB!! Our June General meeting will have a Hot Diggity Dog theme that will feature an all male effort. Jack Cohen is the lead and can always use help. If you would like to join in as a cook, server or clean up volunteer, please contact Jack at or jadec241@gmail.com There will not be a Commodore s Social in June. The July General meeting will have an Ice Cream Social theme. Janet Clerke will be the lead and all volunteers are welcome! Please help Janet make this a success. If you would like to scoop or sprinkle, please contact Janet at or tvljan@yahoo.com. The July event will be the Flagler Beach 4 th Of July Parade, (on Saturday, July 4 th ) with a social after the parade at the Beachfront Grille (park accordingly). They will be giving our club members happy hour prices. Remember no August General meeting. We do have a bowling social planned for August 19 th. Please get out and have a safe boat ride. Joe

Page 4 Rear Commodore - John Green Jag50@bellsouth.net The FBYC events in May highlighted the reason for the Boards efforts to break up the log jam on bringing in new members. Both the Social Committee s and the Maritime Committee s events in May were led by members who joined our club less than three years ago. New members are the key to our continued success. Thanks to Bobbey and Marty Willson for the Dance and Dinner. Also, thanks to Alan and Janet Hendry who took the lead on the Treasure Hunt and lunch. Both events were well attended and enjoyed by our members. The FBYC is still at full membership with applications pending for 14 new members. There is a moratorium on new applications but we continue to add names to the wait list. This month we added Dennis and Nancy Willerth and John Roper. With no new members to introduce, I continue to highlight existing members with a story to tell. In April, Denise and I visited the Flagler Sport Fishing Club s weigh-in for their spring inland fishing tournament. While there we spotted FBYC members John and Dedem Burek. John is a fishing enthusiast and his beautiful, ultra modern new boat is proof of that. After relocating from Connecticut in 2007, the Burek s joined our club in 2013 but are also members of the fishing club. Like the FBYC, the Flagler Sport Fishing Club hosts several events each month including friendly fishing tournaments, cookouts and dinners. They sponsor two large tournaments each year with prizes for the largest redfish, trout and flounder. The participants in these tournaments are serious fishermen with team outfits and boats equipped strictly for inland fishing. The most popular event however is the Kids Fishing Clinic and Tournament held in July. Their club donates over 200 rods and reels to help generate interest in fishing for these young anglers. The club meets at the Palm Coast VFW at 7:30 on the first Tuesday of the month. Dues are only $60 for the 250+ members. Contact John if you would like more information. Happy Boating, John

Page 5 Mike Triano and Eddie Uribe, Fleet Captains The annual Steak-Bake will take place Friday, June 12 th on the beach at Matanzas Inlet. We will be serving steak, corn and baked potatoes. The cutoff date to sign up was at the last General Meeting. The following information is for all of us who have signed up and paid for this event: Bring snacks, a side dish or desert to share, STEAK KNIVES, your own drinks ( water, soft drinks or?) Remember to put your drinks in a plastic cup. Alcohol is not permitted on the beach. Please bring your chairs, tents and lots of sun tan lotion and whatever else you need to be comfortable. For those of you coming by car: Park at the Inlet parking area and come down to the beach between 12:00 and 12:30 PM so we can ferry you to the site. All of you who volunteered, please be at the site by 11:00 AM All boats involved can meet on the ICW in front of the Palm Coast Marina at 10:15 AM and proceed to the inlet. Use the first beach on the right, not the one around the curve of the island. The tides will be going out while we are there, so once you drop your anchor, you will not have to do any other adjusting. An overnight boat trip is planned for July 13 th and 14 th at the Marineland Marina. This is a nice, inexpensive marina right across the street from Marineland and the ocean. I have suggested that those of us who attend bring your own steaks to cook at their site, right on the water s edge. There is an Italian restaurant that will deliver to your boat if you do not want to cook. Please me at mtpalmcoast@yahoo.com if you would like to go. Those of you who want to come up for the day just let me know so I can advise the marina. I will have signup sheets at the June 18 th General Meeting for this event.

Page 6 How to Use Your VHF Radio Power & Motoryacht June 2007 Making a Mayday Call Press the PTT button and say Mayday, Mayday, Mayday. This is the ( your boat name repeated three times) Repeat Mayday, this is ( your boat name) one more time. Report your position as accurately as possible. Report the nature of the emergency. Report the kind of assistance required. Report the number of people aboard and the condition of any injured. Describe the boat ( length, design, color, distinguishing marks) and her present condition and seaworthiness. If there is no response, repeat the entire message. If still no answer try another channel. Note: In an emergency situation that does not involve imminent danger to the boat or people on board, follow the same procedure but substitute Pan-Pan ( pronounced pahn-pahn) for Mayday Channel 16 is the distress, safety, and hailing frequency that the U.S. Coast Guard monitors continuously. All vessels equipped with a VHF MUST monitor channel 16; you ll be redirected to a working channel. Never request a radio check on 16. Channel 22A is a primary working channel the Coast Guard uses for communications with the boating public and is where severe weather warnings, hazards to navigation, and other maritime warnings are broadcast. The A denotes a simplex channel ( ship to ship) in the U.S. mode. c- Securite (see-cure-i-tay) is the signal that navigation information or weather warnings will be brocast. Continued next Page

Page 7 Channel 13 is the navigation/ piloting channel, locks and bridges monitor 13, and it must be used for piloting purpose only. Channel 6 is the ship to ship frequency used for safety-related communications. Channel 9, 68, 69, 71, 72, and 78 are common working channels. Distress Calls a-mayday is a request for immediate assistance in an imminent life threatening situation. If you hear a Mayday call, listen- do not transmit. Determine if you are in a position to assist, if not, maintain radio silence and monitor the call. b- Pan-Pan announces an emergency when a boat and / or people are in jeopardy but not in imminent danger, as with a Mayday call, listen to the pan-pan call, determine if you are in a position to assist, and keep radio silence if you are not.
