However, regardless of weather our committees have many events scheduled to keep us busy. We had an overflow crowd at our Valentines Day Membership Meeting filled with food, fun and games. Sandy Ostresh and her team cooked up an Oldies Weds Game asking questions to some of our married couples. It seems the wives didn t fair any better answering questions than their husbands. Thank you team for all your hard work and a fun evening. Congratulations Recently Chris Nelson, our Co-Lead of the Maritime Committee received his Master Naturalist Certificate. He's now a full fledged Florida Master Naturalist. Congratulations Chris! Picture to follow. Change of Venue In the past our St Patrick s Day dinner meeting at the Flagler Women s Club, has always been our most popular monthly meeting and attendance is always close to the building capacity and in turn we have had to limit attendance. As many of you may already know, our March 20 th St Patrick s Day meeting and dinner has been moved to the Santa Maria Del Mar Hall in Flagler Beach. This venue will allow us to accommodate as many members and guests that wish to come. More information in the Vice Commodores Column. We are looking for a large turn out, please plan to attend. Ten Tenors There is still time to sign up for this event which is scheduled for Saturday April 5, at 7:30 PM, at the Flagler auditorium. The cost is $37.80 PP, payable by check to FBYC. Cut-off is 28 March. Contact Commodore Len if you wish to attend. See you at the Golden Lion for our March Commodore s Social on Tuesday 4 Mar.

Page 3 Vice Commodore Bob Jaeger scubadome@aol.com Bob Jaeger, Vice Commodore Love & romance (and maybe a little wine!) was in the air at our Valentine s meeting last month. Thanks go out to our leads Sandie Ostresh, Jeanne Meyer and Nellie Shepherd for decorating and coordinating the food (those home-made chocolate cherries were AWESOME)! Also, thanks go out to the team for developing the questions for our Oldie-weds game, and to our couples, George & Mickey Logemann, Jim & Joyce O Meara, and Bill & Marie Luke for participating. Congratulations to Bill & Marie for taking home the first place prize (wine and roses)!! The March social will be held at the Golden Lion on March 4 from 5:00 PM till The Lion has undergone some renovations to their kitchen at the beginning of February, so we all look forward to seeing what new goodies they will be able to cook for us (we already know how good their drinks are!!). Len Dignard is the lead. Don t forget to sign-up for our St. Patrick s Day Dinner on March 20 th (deadline for sign-up is March 11). The dinner will be held at Santa Maria Del Mar parish hall in Flagler Beach at 6:00 PM. Be sure to get your name on the list NOW and get your $5 per person to Linda Jaeger ( scubadome@aol.com) by March 11 th. Since we are not limited by the size of the hall, guests of members ($10 per person) are encouraged to at- tend. Jeanne Meyer and Linda Jaeger are the leads and their St. Pat s team will really be cooking up a storm!! Ah, I can smell that corned beef, cabbage, and soda bread already!! Be sure to mark down on your calendar the Commodore s Ball which will be held on April 26 th at the Palm Coast Yacht Club. Contact PC Randy Meyer if you have any questions. Our annual Chinese Auction will be held during our General Meeting in April, so it s not too soon to look around the house and garage for those treasures you would be willing to donate. Check with the leads Cindy Franco and Sandie Ostresh for details.

Page 4 Rear Commodore John Extrom jextrom@gmail.com MEMBERSHIP John Extrom, Rear Commodore February 2014 As spring arrives and we are able to get our boats out without ski hats and heavy coats we start our season with a full house of members and a fairly impressive waiting list. I hope we can encourage our prospective members to join us at our boating events, socials and meetings. In addition to those already on our waiting list, please feel free to let us know if you have friends or acquaintances that are interested in our club. Please remember, if you have room on your boats, to ask those who may not have a boat a this time to join you for our on the water functions. At our next regular meeting on March 20 th ( 1 st day of spring) we will be inducting Donald Hay and Marine Torres as new members of our club. Please remember to take the time to introduce yourself and make them feel welcome.

Page 5 Joe Lindholm The raft up scheduled for February 22, 2014 in the Cimarron Basin was cancelled due to the weather. A new date will be discussed. The March event will be the Blessing of the Fleet on March 15, As of this report there are 20+ boats signed up. The game plan is for all participating boats to meet at the ICW in front of Herschel King Park at approximately 1030 hrs. We will then line up in an order to be called out by Fleet Captain Chris Nelson on radio channel 68. We will then proceed in this order past the Extrom s dock south by the first red buoy on the right where Jane Gaulding will give a blessing to each boat in passing. Boats will then continue in an orderly fashion to Sweetwater s Restaurant by the 100 bridge. There are two marked entrance channels to the docks on both sides. Do not pull your boats in front of the bar area as there is no water there. The other areas should be fine but proceed with caution. It may be necessary for one boat to raft off another at the dock. Appetizers are being provided by the club. A buffet will also be available at the cost $15.00 per person, (this includes tax and tip) and this must be paid by March 7 th to allow the restaurant time. You may send your checks made payable to the FBYC to Joe Lindholm at 9 Crossleaf Court West, Palm Coast, Fl Chris Nelson can take an extra 12 people who do not have a boat or are not taking their boat on his boat. If interested you may send him an at nelson551@hotmail.com. Any other questions concerning this event may be sent to that same or call Chris Nelson at as he is lead for this event. The April Maritime event will be the 1 st Mates course and picnic at the Palm Coast Marina on April 12 th, with a rain date of April 13 th. Please fill in the signup sheet at the next general meeting, and indicate if you are participating in the course, the picnic or both. The 1 st Mates training portion will run from 10 AM till noon, followed by a picnic from noon till around 3 PM. This is a hands on refresher course and we will need a brave few to volunteer their boats for the training portion. John Green is the lead for this event, if you wish to help, or you have any questions please contact John or your Fleet Captains. The club will provide burgers and hot dogs and all picnic attendees are required to bring dish to pass and their drinks of choice.

Page 7 On Water Towing Words of Caution This article is a departure from what I d normally write, but I wanted to pass on some important information to our boaters, particularly the newest and least experienced of them. Most, if not all, of our boaters have Boat U.S. towing insurance because it is convenient, we get a club discount, and if you are on the water without it you are taking an unnecessary, and substantial, financial risk. We usually have a Boat U.S. towboat docked at the Palm Coast Marina. Under normal circumstances this boat is quickly available if you break down, run out of fuel or run aground in Flagler County. Having experienced all three inconveniences, Mike and I can attest to the value of having local professional towing capability. However, our resident tow boat has been loaned out to Daytona Beach for the past month or so and may not be returned to our area for awhile. The nearest Boat U.S. towboats are now up to 25 miles away in either Daytona Beach or St Augustine. This has several potential impacts to us as we cruise up and down the ditch. First and most importantly, if your boat breaks down or runs aground and needs to be towed, you may now face a two-hour wait, or perhaps more, for rescue. You had better be prepared for this. Secondly, as you contemplate a two-plus hour wait for rescue, your natural instinct may be to call a friend or hail a passing boat for a courtesy tow. This has its own risks for you and the designated tower. Remember two key things the tower may be inexperienced and cause severe damage to your boat, his boat and surrounding boats, docks, etc. And if you are the friend that is called upon to tow, you are liable for any damage you cause while you are towing. And chances are your liability insurance company will decline to cover that damage. So, here are the words of caution. 1. Get towing insurance. Boat U.S. gives us a discount. Our club I.D. number is GA84422Y. 2. Carry a radio, cell phone and the towboat call center number 800/ Be prepared to drop anchor and warn off other boats as you wait for rescue. 4. Recognize the risks to you and the Good Samaritan if you get a courtesy tow. Dee Cocchiola
