3 35 Celebrating YEARS JILL CARLSON When my son Rhett turned one I started exercising at WSC in earnest. Of course, Rhett had to come with me and was usually deposited into the capable arms of Jill Carlson in Child Care. Jill always greeted us with a smile and seemed so genuinely cheerful I d feel slightly shamed if I felt harried or frustrated with my mommy-track days. I was comfortable leaving Rhett with her; Jill also had a one year old son who came with her to work and played with Rhett. That was in Today, our sons continue to play together, no longer with Legos, but rather on Wheaton North s baseball team! Jill launched her WSC career in 1997, and it all started with a shirt. She was at her child s soccer game when she noticed one of the moms wearing a Wheaton Sport Center shirt. That mom was Nancy Walters, who worked in Child Care at the time. Nancy told Jill she d be perfect for a job in WSC STAFF Remembers BY CHRISTINE LITAVSKY AUTHOR AND LONG TIME WSC MEMBER WSC Child Care. Truer words were never spoken. Jill has enjoyed working in childcare for 16 years, and in her own words, I don t ever think, I don t want to go to work today. How many people can honestly say that about their job? Jill is currently the baby room coordinator and jokes that she really enjoys working with children who don t talk back. She loves being with the babies and watching them grow over the years. Aside from the babies, the best thing about her job at WSC is the people. As Child Care is a natural stop for anyone with small children, Jill gets to meet and know hundreds of members. As a people person, she revels in that facet of her duties. Her love for her job is obviously contagious 3 of her children also currently work at the WSC. A family affair! BECKY SANDBERG WSC is different than other clubs, and sometimes it s hard to put a finger on how. Although we have excellent instructors, trainers and facilities, other clubs also have these things. What separates WSC from the fitness club crowd is its emphasis on people and relationships. In fact, this relationship business model is so important to WSC that there is someone in charge of facilitating this culture. That person is Becky Sandberg. Becky is WSC s Customer Service Trainer. She ensures that every new employee receives a two-hour launch of the culture of WSC so they understand that WSC is more than a club, it is a family. Becky also provides annual customer service training sessions to employees. These sessions focus on raising the bar in a certain area of customer service. Becky s lovely smile and genuine interest in people make her a perfect fit for her current position, but she s had several other responsibilities during her 19 year tenure. She started at WSC in 1994 working at the reception desk, and after six years worked in the tennis department. Then, with the arrival of new General Manager Dawn Szumski, she was tapped for the newly created position of Customer Service Trainer. When asked about a highlight of her time at WSC, Becky recalled the Gullickson Memorial Tennis Tournament, which was hosted at the club for several years and would draw pros from around the area. It was a wonderful event with topnotch players competing. The biggest change she s seen over the years? Without question, she stated, it has been the shift in the culture of WSC. It has evolved into a family-friendly, relationship driven place that attracts people of all ages.

Hannah Olsen, Matthew Rogers & Marisa Savegnago swam fast at NCSA Junior Nationals in Orlando! Hannah, Matt, & Marissa came home with 5 NEW Team Records and 8 Best Times! The best performance ever at this meet for the Stingrays.

6 get fit GROUP EXERCISE Featured Format F.A.S.T. FUNCTIONAL ATHLETIC STRENGTH TRAINING We are excited to offer this exciting new class to the Spring Group Exercise class schedule! This Functional training class utilizes bands, balls and/or free weights to condition the body in an unstable environment. It also helps aid optimal performance in one s activities of daily living, by focusing on stability, flexibility and balance. overlooked in a traditional strength training program. Motivational speaker, Elizabeth (Betty) Basista, MA, will teach you how to find your passion on Tuesday, April 8th, at 7:15 p.m. in the Wheaton Sport Center s Multi-Purpose Room. Using humorous insights and proven strategies, Betty will challenge you to change your mindset and will inspire and motivate you to reinvent yourself. Voluntary donations will benefit the Nelson family. Betty teaches Zumba and Piloxing at Wheaton Sport Center and Spanish at Wheaton North High School. Betty has also taught at Wheaton College and Benedictine University. In May, Betty will speak at the United States Consortium of the Illinois Special Needs Expo in St. Charles, Illinois and at the YMCA Women s Summer Wellness Weekend in East Troy, Wisconsin in June.
