MRS HISCOX S CHALLENGE On September 9 th and 10 th, one of our TA s, Mrs Hiscox and her husband walked 100km from Putney to Henley to raise money for CLIC Sargent an amazing charity. The pair have managed to raise almost 2,000 through their efforts! Their fundraising link is below for anyone that may be interested: 5
LEANDER ROWING CLUB TRIALS On Tuesday 26th September Leander Rowing Club will be coming in to do trials with boys from year 8 to year 11. Lots of students will have the opportunity to trial during their PE lessons. If you do not have PE on this day please come to the gym at 3.00pm to do after school trials. If you have been following our social media and sports bulletin over the last year you will know that we have had great success after last year s trials. Ben Barnes, Sam Hill, Taylor Lockhart, Alex McDonald and Charlie Harrington have all been accepted in the Leander training academy and are training between 8 12 times per week. The club are hopeful that within the next few years these boys will be rowing in the Great Britain junior squad. Unfortunately, Leander do not offer junior girls rowing if this is something you are interested in please come and speak to Miss Chapman who can offer advice on how to start. 6
EX STUDENT ON ROAD TO THE WORLD CUP Congratulations to former student Rachel Newborough, who has recently featured for the Northern Ireland national women s football team in their World Cup qualifiers. She played the full 90 minutes in the derby with the Republic of Ireland, putting in a very good account of herself and is doing her best to qualify for the finals. Very best of luck for the rest of qualifying! #DareToDream 7
BOYS PE KIT We just wanted to clarify a few things about boys PE kit for lessons for this year. Outdoor Kit Indoor Kit Long Sleeve Rugby Shirt Navy Shorts Long Navy Socks Studded boots Gum Shield (highly recommended compulsory for games) *Trainers (in case field is unusable) A thermal or under layer is optional when cold. Short Sleeve Polo Shirt Navy Shorts Navy Blue or White Socks Trainers *Students should have trainers for every PE lesson. This is so that if any of our facilities are out of action due to unforeseen circumstances such as weather, they can still take part in their PE lesson. If for whatever reason students are unable to bring in the correct kit for a lesson, we ask that a parent or guarding provide a note explaining the circumstances. We will do our upmost to provide the kit necessary for students to take part in their lesson. 8
NEW EXTRA-CURRICULAR QUARTER ZIP TOP The PE department now has on offer a brand new extra-curricular quarter zip soft shell mid layer available to purchase for our students. A picture of which can be seen below. If students would like to purchase one, they need to come and grab a letter from the PE office. Students are able to wear this on extra-curricular fixtures and to extracurricular clubs and practices. The top is priced at If you have any questions, just get in touch. 9
FORMER SPORTS PERSONALITY TAKES ON THE TOUGHEST OF CHALLENGES This weekend, Katherine West, a former pupil and Sports Personality of the Year award recipient is taking on the ultimate in physical challenges and is taking on the Berlin Marathon. This will be her first marathon. She has only actually completed her first 10km, 10 mile and half marathons in the past 12 months, so it has been an incredible year of firsts already! Despite this, she is aiming for a time of 3 hours 20 minutes which would be an outstanding achievement for someone completing their first 26.1 miles. She is also doing it for a very worthwhile cause. She is running for Great Ormond Street Hospital and has already raised several hundred pounds for this worthwhile charity. We would like to wish her the very best on this enormous challenge and would encourage anyone interested in sponsoring her to visit her sponsorship page: 10
NETBALL STAR IN THE MAKING Shout out to year 10 student Libby Burgess, who at aged 14 has been selected for the Hertfordshire Mavericks U19 netball squad! This is a truly remarkable achievement for someone her age. It is also thoroughly well deserved. She is definitely one to watch out for in the future. 11
Sporting Profile Issue 10: Whiteman PE Teachers Sporting Profile -Each week we would like to share with you what your PE teachers have been doing outside school: Mrs Whiteman From a young age I have always been involved in a variety of different sports. My main passion though has also been horse riding and netball. Early life- I started horse riding at 5 years old. At 10 I joined the local Pony club and competed regularly in Showjumping and One day eventing on my pony. At sixteen I qualified for English schools National Championships. I began competing more competitively and begun BSJA and British Eventing. I often competed in foxhunter classes and intermediate eventing. One of my favourite events was always competing at Newbury show (Now called Berkshire show) and also the annual Pony club camps. Equestrian is a fantastic sport where men and woman compete equally. At University I also competed for the Trampolining team, traveling and competing across the country. After University I joined a local Netball team and regularly played on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Present- With two children now I don t compete as regularly as I would like although my eldest who is four has now begun her journey in the horse riding world. I do though still enjoy taking part and running the odd half marathon. Highlight- Competing at English Schools Lowlight- Falling off at goring heath horse trials at the penultimate fence when I was on target to win the event Sporting heroes Mary King- An eventing legend, competing at 6 Olympics and at age 56 still competing today. William Fox-Pitt- Another great eventer and even after a fall which left him in a coma for two weeks in 2015 he still came back to compete in the 2016 Olympics In next week s issue, we will look at the sporting profile of Mr Pringle. 12

ADDITIONAL NOTICES Please note that Yr9 girls netball practice has moved to a Thursday so that it does not clash with hockey. If there are any Yr7-10 students that are interested in representing the school at cross country and weren t at trials, come and see a member of the PE department on Monday after school. As always, we love to hear about our students sporting success outside of school. Please keep us updated! You can info/photos/videos to pn@maidenerleghschool.co.uk. If anyone has any old/unwanted trainers or football boots that could be donated to the department, they would be very much appreciated. Just drop us an or they can be given to any PE teacher. Thank you. If anyone would be interested in sponsoring this year s Sports Personality of the Year Awards Evening or one of our sports teams, please also get in touch. 14
