A U T U M N T E R M - I S S U E 6 W/E 3RD NOVEMBER 2017 Welcome back to the second half of the Autumn term and the build up to Christmas has started in earnest. School is always busy, but there is much to look forward during the next two months. Yesterday, all the children had the chance to participate in the Brontë Bulb Bonanza as well as a good number of parents. Nearly all the bulbs were planted and will start coming through the grass in early Spring we hope. Many thanks to all who helped, particularly in the digging and relaying of the turf. Now that the evenings in particularly are increasingly dark and cold, can I please remind you to follow the procedures for parking and collecting children. No child is to be dropped off outside the school and please make sure you use the car parks that are provided for this purpose. We had a very near miss recently and it needs everyone to follow the rules. Many thanks for this. Have a lovely weekend, Simon Dunn, Headmaster You can now keep up to date with the latest news, events and photos by following us on Poppies are now on sale to raise money for the British Legion. These will be sold at morning registration until Friday 9th November.
30 Hour FEEE voucher codes Please be aware that if you have a 30 Hour FEEE Voucher Code, you need to reconfirm your eligibility with the HMRC every 3 months. You should be notified directly by the HMRC when it is due to be renewed. As part of their study of Sikhism in RE this term, Year 5 enjoyed a visit and presentation from Mrs Hayre on Monday. We learned more about Sikhs in Britain, and special objects and symbols; the pupils particularly loved seeing pictures of The Golden Temple, which prompted some really thoughtful questions. Many thanks to Mrs Hayre and Arjan in 5S for preparing the presentation and sharing their lovely artefacts. Reception have been talking about Remembrance Day and why we wear poppies. We then had a go at painting our own poppies to go on our display. We had to look carefully at the poppy to see what shape it was and then drew it before selecting the correct colours to paint it. CHATTERBOOKS CLUB 'At Chatterbooks Club our November theme is 'Superheroes, comics and cartoons'. We created some great onomatopoeic cartoons in starburst speech bubbles and then freeze framed scenes from our favourite superhero tales.' GARDENING CLUB Our gardening clubs have been willow weaving Christmas wreaths. Nearer the time we will be decorating them and they will be on sale at the Christmas Fair. This week Year 2 learnt about Advent, why it is celebrated and how it is celebrated. They found out about the Advent wreath and then designed their own Advent calendar.
purple, penguin, pear, plum, pineapple & pomegranate! Nursery have been learning about the letter 'p' this week. We tasted pomegranates, plums, pears, passion fruit and pineapple, made pasta necklaces and made spooky Halloween potions and pumpkin pictures. So far we have covered the letters s,a t i and p. Next week's letter is 'n'. See if your child can find these letters in books and on signs and remember to use the sound of the letter, not the name (please ask in school if you need more clarity on this point). Outside this week we have planted some bulbs, made pathways as well as building Bonfires and talking about being safe on Bonfire night. YEAR 2 MATHS Mrs Small's maths' group had an outdoor maths lesson to learn all about Carroll diagrams. They collected leaves and then chose two criteria to sort them by. The children then had to place their leaves in the correct section on the Carroll diagram. At first it was tricky to remember to check both criteria, but a few leaves later and everyone could confidently place their leaves in the correct place. In Miss Campbell s group we have been learning about using the > (greater than) and < (less than) signs. They remembered to look at the number of decide which number out the two was the biggest and which was the smallest. Year 1 have been enjoying tackling the new challenges in their Challenge Book this week. The children are set a number of tasks for the week and they have to decide when, where and how they will complete them. Poppy has made a poppy in the Creative Area, Lucy completed a jigsaw by herself and Lucas made a moving vehicle. The idea is that the children are given lots of opportunities to try things out, learn from their mistakes and achieve their goals. tens and ones in the numbers to of DATE F YOUR DIARY On Friday 12th January 2018 we will be taking all KS1 to the Alhambra Theatre to see this year s pantomime Cinderella
Year 5 enjoyed a fabulous visit to Tropical World this week. They were able to draw upon their knowledge of the Amazonian Rainforest and compare it to our native woodlands. Did you know? Rainforests cover 2% of the Earth s surface but contain over half of the planet s plants and animal species! Worms in the Amazonian Rainforest can grow upto 3m long! Ask Year 5 if you want to know more! Remember, Remember the 5th of November Year 2 have kicked off their new topic Fire! Fire! with planning and writing firework poems. They thought of wonderful adjectives and arranged them in the shape of fireworks to produce some excellent poems. Everyone from Nursery to Year helped plant over 3,000 bulbs the banking yesterday, in the form of the letters B H. Hopefully next Spring we will have a wonderful display! Thanks to those parents who volunteered to help on the day. 6 on
Our first tournament of the season was the HMC at GSAL on Wednesday 11th October where we played 4 games, with no winners or losers. A great start against Hymers with 5 tries and a good performance all round. Next was Yarm, a very well organised team but we had a very close contest, with only 1 try in it. Our third opponents were St Olaves of York, much bigger than us and very well drilled. Our performance was not quite as strong in this game. In our fourth game we came back strongly in a game with only 1 try between the teams. As a team we really enjoyed the tournament and much improved on our last two matches. We are learning the game quickly and some of our new teammates who are new to the game this year, are really doing well. By Henry Barton On Friday 13 October the U10A team played Lady Lane Park School, it was a brilliant match and everyone played well. On Friday 13th October our Under 9 rugby team travelled to Bradford Grammar School for their annual festival. The matches came thick and fast and Bronte beat Ashville and Birkdale convincingly. They then faced tougher matches against Hymers and St Olaves. We finished with a good performance against GSAL to finish a super afternoon's rugby. Well done to everyone who played, and represented the school so superbly. Please follow this link to find some photos from the festival The U10s enjoyed a successful day out at the Bradford Grammar Festival, playing 7 fixtures and winning 3, drawing 1 and narrowly losing 3. It was an excellent opportunity for the boys to play against some schools that they had never played before and they thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon. They were excellent ambassadors for Bronte House and will have learnt a lot from the experience. Player of the day was Phillip Trimby. There was great defending from Olivia and Pippa but my lady of the match is Macey for excellent shooting. The final score was 12-5 to Bronte. Well done to everyone who played and thank you Miss Stega and Miss Williams for taking us. By Scarlett Williams On Tuesday this week, our U9A + B rugby teams travelled to Richmond House for their latest fixture. In good weather conditions both teams shone, passing and tackling with high levels of skill. The A team showed speed and urgency when moving the ball into wide areas, and the B team showed a much improved defensive line throughout their match. The A team scored 10 tries and the B team scored 13. Well done to everyone who played, and bring on Ashville next week! A.B.A We have just had our ABA meeting and looking forward to a very busy term! Just 4 weeks to go to the Christmas Fair. The children will be working hard on their Christmas music in the orchestra and the ABA have lots of new stalls confirmed that we think you will love, a rather exciting raffle prize and a wide range of refreshments. We hope that you will come along with your family and friends and lend a hand where you can. Here are the dates to pen into your diary: 29th Nov - Decorating the school 2nd December - Christmas Fair 8th Dec - Secret Santa shop Please contact year reps if you can help with any of the above events (we greatly appreciate it): Ashdown: Bill Clarke Year 1: Suzi Gibson Year 3: Michelle Chapman Year 3: Louise Williams Year 4: Sally McLelland Year 5: Maria Flynn Year 6: Vics Hanson Final note for help...if you have, or know anyone who may have, any goods / services that they would like to donate to the raffle, please could you get in touch? Donating prizes is a great way to promote a business or to just give to a worthy cause. Thanks!
