1 PRINCIPAL CHARACTERS (subject to change) WILLY WONKA The eccentric owner of the Wonka Chocolate Factory. Mr. Wonka is the most renowned candy maker in the world and an endless combination of opposing parts. He is old but filled with boundless energy and his persona is larger than life. He is also both charming and insensitive. His decision to open his factory to five lucky children is actually a calculated ploy to find the perfect child to take over his factory. He is looking for a properly obsequious child to whom he can teach all the secrets of his factory. Special Requirements: Strong actor, singer, and dancer. NARRATOR A reporter who delivers commentary and helps fill in the gaps of our story. CHARLIE BUCKET The protagonist of the story. Charlie is unassuming and respectful toward everyone in his life. He/she is undernourished but refuses to ever take an extra portion of food because it would deprive another member of his/her family. He/she must walk by Mr. Wonka s factory every day on his way to school and smell the tantalizing smell of chocolate as his/her stomach grumbles. He/she is almost always cold because he/she does not have an adequate jacket. Even though he/she has every reason to complain, he/she never does. Charlie is exactly the kind of child that Mr. Wonka wants. Special Requirements: Strong actor, singer, and dancer. AUGUSTUS GLOOP A tall boy/girl who loves nothing but eating chocolate. Augustus is rude and insubordinate in his never-ending quest to fill his/her own face. His/her parents choose to indulge him/her rather than listen to his/her whining. He/she suffers for his/her greed in the factory; while sucking from the chocolate river, he/she falls in and is sucked up by one of the super pipes. Strong German accent. VERUCA SALT A spoiled brat. Veruca demands anything she wants and throws tantrums until her parents meet her demands. She is mean and completely self-involved, and her parents always acquiesce to her wishes. Veruca s impetuousness causes her trouble at the factory. She demands to own one of Wonka s trained squirrels, but when she marches in to claim it, it deems her a bad nut and sends her down the garbage chute. Special Requirements: Strong singer, dancer. May be asked to do ballet. Strong British accent.

2 VIOLET BEAUREGARD An avid gum chewer and competitive speed walker. Violet s attempt to beat a gum-chewing record completely consumes her. At the factory her gum chewing antics become her downfall when she grabs an experimental piece of gum against Mr. Wonka s advice. She eagerly chews the gum and turns into a giant blueberry. Special Requirements: Strong actor, and high belt singer. Strong southern accent. MIKE TEAVEE A boy who cares only about television. The more guns and violence on a show, the more Mike likes it. Mike is slightly more complex than the other bad children in that he is smart enough to realize when Mr. Wonka is lying to him. Still, his attempts to get answers to his questions go completely unheeded. At the factory he wants nothing more than to check out the chocolate television room. Once there he spies the opportunity to be on television himself. Without regard for his own safety, he engineers a filming of himself and ends up shrinking down to a couple of inches. Special Requirements: Strong actor, dancer. No accent. THE OOMPA LOOMPA TRIO Fun-loving dwarves hailing from Loompaland that are the leaders of the rest of the Oompa Loompas. Mr. Wonka s diminutive work force feasts on cocoa beans and performs all of the work in the Wonka Chocolate Factory. They also enjoy dancing, beating drums, and singing songs about what happens to bad children. Special Requirements: Strong actors, singers, and dancers. MR. BUCKET Charlie s hard-working father. Mr. Bucket works tirelessly to provide for his family, which includes two sets of grandparents. In spite of his efforts, Mr. Bucket barely earns enough money for his family to survive. MRS. BUCKET Charlie s mother. Mrs. Bucket worries constantly about her son. She unfailingly tries to give Charlie her portion of a meal, which he always refuses. She is extremely giving in her efforts to take care of the four invalided grandparents with whom she lives. GRANDMA JOSEPHINE Charlie s paternal grandmother. Grandma Josephine, like her fellow grandparents, spends all her time in bed. She loves Charlie and is quick to judge others.

3 GRANDMA GEORGINA Charlie s maternal grandmother. She is the mirror image of Grandma Josephine. She too is very quick to judge others. MRS. GLOOP Augustus s mom. The Gloops are moronic and indulgent of their son/daughter s overeating. Mrs. Gloop is proud of her son/daughter s appetite for chocolate and thinks it better that he/she eat than be a nuisance. Strong German accent. MR. SALT Veruca s father who is at her beck and call. Whenever she screams and cries. He gives in to her every demand. Mr. Salt goes so far as to divert his entire factory from shelling peanuts to shelling candy bars in order to get Veruca the golden ticket she demands. Strong British accent. MRS. BEAUREGARD Violet s mother. She is weak and ineffectual. She lets her daughter talk back to her and ignores her insults. Strong southern accent. MR. or MRS. TEAVEE Mike s parent. He/She is a hands-off parent. He/She allows the television to parent her son. No accent. PURE IMAGINATION SOLOIST Magical dancer during Charlie and Wonka s elevator ride. Special requirements: Advanced ballet/contemporary dancer. *Other smaller roles will be cast that may not be listed.

4 VOCAL ENSEMBLES (subject to change) WELCOME ENSEMBLE Strong actors, confident singers, and great dancers with experience in harmonizing. Will help introduce Willy Wonka to the five lucky children and their parents. Will also be considered a dance ensemble. CHOCOLATE ENSEMBLE Choir of singers that will present the first Chocolate Room in the factory. The choir will positioned all over the theater (positioned in the audience) to help make the audience feel like the entire space is the factory. DANCE ENSEMBLES (subject to change) BAZOOKA ENSEMBLE A small group of advanced dancers who will play back up dancers for Violet s Queen of Pop. Looking for strong dancers with dynamic personalities and style. Very much like the MSA s Sweet Sixteen Ensemble of Alice Dance Style: Broadway Jazz. BIKER ENSEMBLE Intermediate/Advanced Dancers sent by Mr. Wonka in the middle of the night, on bicycles, to announce the golden ticket contest. Looking for dancers with strong musicality and performance quality. Dance Style: Rhythm Tap FINALE ENSEMBLE (TBD) GOLDEN ENSEMBLE Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced Dancers who will represent the hopes and dreams of little Charlie Bucket after finding the golden ticket in I ve Got a Golden Ticket. Must demonstrate character development and precision in their dancing. Dance Style: Broadway Jazz NIGHTMARE ENSEMBLE Advanced Dancers that represent the Mr. Wonka s nightmare childhood. Dance style: Jazz

5 OOMPA LOOMPA ENSEMBLE Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced dancers to introduce the Oompa Loompas, the eccentric workers of the factory. Looking for strong, athletic, hard-hitting hip hop dancers. Dance Style: Hip Hop SMILEX ENSEMBLE Beginner/Intermediate tap dancers who work at the Smilex Toothpaste factory. Must demonstrate style and maturity in their dancing. Looking for dancers with long, clean lines for a precision dance. Dance Style: Broadway Tap SNOW ENSEMBLE Intermediate/Advanced dancers who demonstrate the simplicity and innocence of Charlie Bucket s circumstances. Dance Style: Ballet TUNNEL ENSEMBLE Intermediate/Advanced Dancers that represent the fast, bright, somewhat scary Chocolate Tunnel. Must show skills in both jazz and hip hop. Dance Style: Contemporary Jazz and Street Jazz WELCOME ENSEMBLE Beginner/Intermediate strong actors, confident singers, and great dancers with experience in harmonizing. Will help introduce Willy Wonka to the five lucky children and their parents. Will also be considered a vocal ensemble. Dance Style: Jazz
