As Chair of the Public Safety Committee and an LAPD Reserve Officer, it is my distinct pleasure to welcome Capt. Kris Pitcher as the new commanding officer of LAPD's Devonshire Division. Captain Pitcher has been a member of the Los Angeles Police Department for 24 years and has worked a variety of assignments including uniformed patrol, training, vice enforcement and various investigative entities. He was appointed to the rank of Captain in December of 2000 and served as the Commanding Officer of Foothill and North Hollywood Patrol Divisions, Vice Division and Force Investigation Division before being appointed the Commanding Officer of Devonshire Area in August of Additionally, Captain Pitcher is a member of the faculty of Americans for Effective Law Enforcement (AELE) where he speaks on the topic of OIS investigations at their annual seminar, and has authored numerous articles on OIS investigations, credibility and protocols for law enforcement and legal journals. He earned a Bachelor s in Political Science and a Master's in Public Administration from CSUN. The North Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce will honor former Los Angeles City Councilman Greig Smith and his wife Chris at the Chamber's annual Summer Dinner Dance on Saturday, August 27 at the Airtel Plaza Hotel. The Chamber is recognizing the immeasurable work that Greig and Chris have done for the betterment of the residents and businesses in the 12th Council District, and beyond. Through the efforts of Greig Smith the property was acquired by the City and will be restored, preserved and protected as a community asset that the public will be able to enjoy for generations. In the past, proceeds built a Memorial Monument in front of the West Valley Community Police Station for fallen Police Officers, and raised funds for the Los Angeles Police Memorial Foundation and the Randal D. Simmons Outreach Foundation. Randall Simmons was a 27-year veteran of the LAPD and the only LAPD SWAT Officer killed in the line of duty. Join Northridge West Neighborhood Council every Thursday for their community beautification effort to clean up the streets of Northridge. On Thursday, Sept. 1, they will once again clean up weeds and trash and do maintenance on the tree wells on the North side of Lassen St. just west of Wilbur Ave. Park at 9900 Wystone Ave. and walk through the walkway to Lassen Street. The project was launched in the Spring of 2010 by Northridge West Neighborhood Council and neighborhood residents who wanted to get involved in cleaning up trash, weeds and debris from the streets of Northridge to keep it clean, safe and beautiful. Since then they have removed thousands of bags of debris from the streets and

Our public pools are a wonderful resource, offering children and adults in the community a great, economical way to cool off, get exercise and have fun! Most L.A. public pools close for the season on Sept. 5. The City s Aquatics facilities include regular public swimming pools with a wide variety of amenities, programs, sports and classes for children, adults and people with disabilities and competitive athletes in training. There are even Parks facilities, such as Reseda Park and Lake Balboa, that offer fishing, and remote-control boating. The City also offers a Junior Lifeguard Training Program designed to prepare young people who are interested in pursuing a career as a Lifeguard.
