3 This month s department spotlight, is showcasing the Science Department. Lead by Department Chair, Billi Smith, team members are Garrett Burdette, Jocelyn Crawford, Natalie Elkins, Jane Harrison, and Jennifer Stover. Garrett Burdette has been teaching for three years at Nitro High. He has taught Physical Science and Earth Science. Mr. Burdette is very involved at Nitro, he co-sponsors Pep Club, and is on the Greater Nitro Youth Foundation Board. He is especially busy with sports because he is also our Athletic Director. Mr. Burdette s family and church have the biggest influences on him and that carries over to the relationships he has with his students through teaching and mentoring them. He is married and loves to spend any spare time he has playing golf, hunting, and fishing. S C I E N C E D E P A R T M Jocelyn Crawford is another key member of the science department, and has been teaching 6 years with the last 5 being at Nitro teaching earth science, human anatomy, and environmental science. She sponsors our award winning Academic Team and remembers the unforgettable trip the team took to Kennywood. Mrs. Crawford is married and has a daughter named Violet. Although her daughter keeps her busy, she loves to fit in time for gardening, baking, traveling, and reading. Natalie Elkins is also a valued member of the department. She has been teaching for 14 years and for the last 12 has been at Nitro teaching Chemistry, AP Chemistry, and Physics. Mrs. Elkins is also the senior class sponsor. The biggest influence on her life is her family. She is married and has 3 children, Cora(8), Silas(5), and Kate(2). She loves to spend her time camping, reading, and working NY Times crossword puzzles. Jane Harrison is a key member of the science department at Nitro, she has been teaching for 7 years. The last 5 years have been as a Wildcat teaching Forensics, Physical Science, Chemistry, Biology, and Biotechnology and coaches our boys tennis team. The BioTech Magnet Program is the only one of its kind in Kanawha County. Her most unforgettable moment was receiving a $10,000 monetary gift from DOW Chemical/Bayer CropScience to help begin the Biotechnology Program at Nitro. Mrs. Harrison is married with two daughters Samantha and Kelli, and now enjoys the love of granddaughter, Raidyn. It is no surprise that her family has been the greatest influence on her life. When she has a chance, Mrs. Harrison loves working out, playing tennis, gardening, and boating. Billie Smith is not only a valuable asset to the science department, but also the department chair. Mrs. Smith has been teaching for 40 years and has been at Nitro for 20 years. During that time she has taught Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, and AP Biology. Mrs. Smith s most unforgettable moment was when she represented Nitro High School in skydiving. She also notes each year contains unforgettable student and memories they create together. Mrs. Smith says that her devotion and faith are her biggest influences on her life; combining with family, nature, teaching lessons, and life long lessons, she feels very blessed with life. Mrs. Smith is married and has two children, Carrie and Charles. In her spare time she loves walking/hiking, gardening, nature, reading, and travelling. Jennifer Stover catches our final spotlight of the science department. She has been teaching for almost 23 years with 7 years at Nitro High School; she has taught biology, anatomy, physical science, health, and introduction to healthcare. Her teaching doesn t end there, she also teaches credit recovery, HSTA, and the upward bound academic (Health Science Technology Program) at WV State University. Her most memorable moment was getting to see two of the recent HSTA students receive scholarships to Marshall University and West Virginia University. Ms. Stover has a daughter Sidney who is an alumni of Nitro and currently attends Marshall University. She credits many to influencing her life, her daughter, her parents, an aunt and uncle and her church family. Ms. Stover doesn t have alot of spare time, but when she does she enjoys walking and caring for her West Highland Terrier. E N T
