1 HAPPY HOPPERS NEWSLETTER Volume 59 Number 7 March Presidents Message R emember those High School or Junior High writing assignments where you had to turn in a paper with a minimum of so many words and going back and repeatedly counting every and, or, if and still being short. Well... sometimes writing a "Presidents Message" can be like that. What can I say that might be of interest to our HAPPY HOPPER club members? So I decided to peruse some of our old Newsletters going all the way back to 2005 when as some of you may remember, Gary & Jeneane Dufour were President. It seems, over the years, there have been some recurring themes. One: We have a great Club with many wonderful members who love to Square Dance. Two: The objective of the Hoppers remains the same. FUN & FRIENDSHIP. Three: Difficulty in finding dedicated members who are willing to take time out of their busy lives to ensure the continuation of Square Dancing in general and our club in particular. Those dedicated members are called "VOLUNTEERS" and they are vitally important to the survival of Square Dancing as we know it. Regardless where you dance, whether it be here or at one of the big dances in Arizona, someone has to organize and administer the details. Please consider volunteering. You are needed. Consider volunteering with another couple so you share a single position. It's fun and you don't have to feel like the "LONE RANGER". See you in a Square. Randy and Jackie Ron and Emily Happy Hoppers Newsletter March 2018 Page 1
2 By Liza Halpenny I just want to dance. We ALL want to dance. I don t know how to do that job. There are lots of former board members around who are happy to mentor you. Why do we need a board anyway? If there is no board, there is no one to coordinate Happy Hoppers activities. The club would fold. No Hoppers lessons. No Hoppers dances. What a horrible idea! But, I just want to dance. We ALL want to dance. The same people serve on the board over and over. They must want to do it. Don t confuse dedicated and unselfish with want to do it. I travel. I can t be here every week. There are lots of folks who are happy to step in and cover for you when you are gone. I don t know the other people on the board very well. Serving on the board is a wonderful way to get to know people better, and make new, close, long-lasting friendships. There are over 100 Hopper members. I m going to let the other guy do the work. There are over 100 Hopper members. If we all pitched in and practiced rotation in office, we would only serve on the board once every 10 years. I have lots of other commitments and stresses. I just want to relax and have fun at Hopper events. We all have lots of other commitments. Helping out at Hopper events is part of the fun. I just want to dance. Try thinking of it this way: I love to dance. So I will give a little extra time this next year to help everyone keep dancing. I see what you mean. Serving on the board will bring joy to me and to others. Sign me up! No really, I just want to dance. We ALL want to dance. Board meetings are boring and contentious. Actually, Hoppers board meetings are lively and full of laughter. Happy Hoppers Newsletter March 2018 Page 2
