1 The Royal Canadian Legion West Carleton Branch 616 DECEMBER 2011 VOLUME 3, ISSUE 07 December Newsletter Allbirch Road, Constance Bay, ON K0A 3M0 (613) Web site Highlites..... Pictures Coming Up... Don t Forget.. Calendars..... November went by in a hurry for Branch 616. We held Remembrance Day observances on Saturday, the 5 th. Our service was attended by troops from Petawawa, cadets, scouts, veterans, and dignitaries from all levels of government. The Cameron Highlanders led the parade and Comrade Paul Graveline led the singing of the National Anthem. The weather held out till everyone retired inside for refreshments and comradeship. On November 11, our colour party joined with that of Kanata Branch in their Remembrance Day Parade. Afterwards, we had lunch at their Branch then went to Almonte to join our colours with theirs for a two o clock parade. Nice weather that day, for which we were thankful. Meanwhile, the Poppy Campaign was still in force until the 10 th with volunteers pitching in to man the tables at Metro, Sobeys and Canadian Tire. Poppy chair Anita Kamps will have a report in the next issue. The Earlybird Membership drive has wound up. Membership chair Jim Wilson has reported over 50 percent renewal. The Earlybird winner for November is Comrade Roy Fethersonhaugh. Congratulations to both of you! The Youth Education Committee has completed the judging of Poems, Posters, and Essays. Area schools submitted a record total of 319 entries in all categories; Stonecrest Elementary snagged 23 wins, Venta Prep had 6, and St.Michaels in Fitzroy Harbour had 4. All the winning entries have been submitted to Zone for judging. The Branch thanks Youth Ed chair Eleanor Groot-Koerkamp and her committee (Comrades George Dolan, Kathryn Scott, and Jennifer Baldelli) for a job well done. Newsletter by Arleen Morrow & Marilyn Deslauriers

2 Trillium Grant: Branch 616 has received another grant from the Ontario Trillium Corporation. The presentation took place on Thursday, December 1. Branch 616 President Frances Gentile had the pleasure of introducing head table guests Sherry Franklin from the OTC, Greg Brooks and Sandra Holmes from the office of MPP Jack MacLaren, and Kerry Bourgaize representing Councilor Eli El-Chantiry and City of Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson. Branch 616 will get a new septic system with this extremely welcome gift of sixty seven thousand dollars!!! Thank you to the Trillium Committee of Eleanor Crawley, Steven Wheeler and Len Russell. And thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate this great event. Branch Sports: Branch 616 hosted Zone on Dec 3 rd. The Branch entered two teams; the team of Jim Wilson, Tom Watters, Harriet Farrelll, and Donna Keays came fourth and will advance to District in Chalk River. Ladies Auxiliary: The LA has been busy this month with sports and the Christmas Bazaar. Two teams went to Zone and will advance to District. In Zone Darts, four singles and four doubles went to District in Almonte on the 26 th but failed to advance. The Christmas Bazaar and Craft Sale was on the 20 th. The deli and bake table always does well; so does the white elephant sale for the sports fund. Thank you to all the LA members who came out to help. Perley/Rideau Veterans Annual Christmas Party: The vets from the Perley attended the annual party in their honour on November 19. EIO George was on hand as usual to welcome them

3 and entertain everyone with music and stories. After a great lunch provided by Ellie, Betty and helpers, the 616 Entertainers did their usual entertaining.
