There were 68 families, 139 adults, and a handful of children enjoying our facilities and the surrounding area. They fished, held cook-outs, played games, gave prizes galore to their members, enjoyed a lunch meal from our General Store, and had a local artist facilitate two Sip n Dip Water Color Classes. Based on submitted survey s by group members, they enjoyed all the new experiences, listed Apple Island Resort as a top-ten resort for future rally s, and were very impressed with the cleanliness and neighborly feel of the resort. They had a fantastic week! TENANT/GUEST Occupancy of Campsite Easements Owners...Please remember that your guests must register at the Resort Office immediately upon arriving at the resort. 2 G u e s t S e rv i c e s B r i e f ( c o n t d. ) WILD PARSNIP Wild Parsnip has been found growing throughout the common green space areas of the resort. The green space is maintained & acts as a buffer for the lake due to runoff from heavy rains. It also acts as a preventive measure in washout of the soil. Please DO NOT handle Wild Parsnip. Recently the Vermont Agency of Agriculture issued the following notice. Please read and heed the information outlined below. For more information on invasive species and other local plant related information contact the agency at The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food & Markets & the Department of Health want Vermonters to be aware that a common weed found along many Vermont roadsides can cause painful rashes & raised blisters, similar to second-degree sunburn. Poison Parsnip (Pastinaca sativa L.), also known as Wild Parsnip, is found throughout the state. The plant produces a sap that reacts to sunlight, & skin that comes in contact with the sap becomes hyper-sensitive to ultraviolet light. It may take several hours after exposure for burns to develop, & some of the skin damage can be serious. Wild Parsnip produces small yellow flowers that look like Queen Anne s Lace. It is a close relative of Carrots, Parsley, Angelica, & Giant Hogweed, all of which can cause similar skin reactions in sensitive individuals. This innocent looking flower can cause a lot of pain and discomfort, said Tim Schmalz, plant industry section chief for the Agency of Agriculture. The good news is that in order for a reaction to occur, the sap has to come in direct contact with your skin. You re not likely to get a reaction through casual contact or brushing up against the plant, like you would with Poison Ivy or Stinging Nettles. Summer in Vermont is great. Just be mindful when gardening, hiking, biking, or otherwise enjoying the outdoors, and Wild Parsnip won t ruin your fun! If you get Wild Parsnip sap on your skin: Wash the skin thoroughly with soap and water as soon as possible. Protect the exposed skin from sunlight for at least 48 hours. If you experience a skin reaction, call your health care provider. If you need to work with or near the plant: Wear clothing that covers your arms and legs. Wash clothes that come in contact with the sap. Work with the plant on cloudy days. If you are using string trimmers or power mowers in areas where this plant grows, wear eye/face protection, in addition to long pants, long sleeves, and gloves. To learn more about wild parsnip visit wildparsnip.aspx G e n e r a l S t o r e N e w s The General store just had its first wine tasting on July 22 nd with Shelburne Vineyards, and customers got to sample a selection of their wines. In addition, customers sampled meats from McKenzies and cheeses from Cabot Special. Join us for our next wine tasting from 3:00pm-5:30pm on Saturday, August 20 th, featuring East Shore Vineyard. Thank you to the NAFCA group for their patronage to the General Store during their visit. Special thanks to my staff and volunteers for all their hard work! Watch for upcoming discounts throughout the store! Don t forget...call ahead ordering available for salads and subs at (802) We look forward to seeing you! PAGE 2

4 G o l f L i n k s Well, it s midsummer already, and July s weather was a bit crazy. Cold and wet or hot and dry...weather did not stop our golfers, though, from having a great time. The golf course is in the best shape it has ever been, and we are seeing many new faces at the Golf Clubhouse. Friday Night Scrambles have been a weekly favorite with a great turn out and lots of fun! Couples Blind Draw Tournament July 17: After being rained out on July 10th, we had super weather on July 17th. Clubs were swinging and putts were dropping, and everyone had a wonderful time. The results for the day: 1st Place Chip Litchfield, Penni Brink, Larry Litchfield, Billie Jo Litchfield 2nd Place Emile Thibault, Sis Thibault, Dave Villemaire, Trina Villemaire 3rd Place Moe Thibault, Pauline Thibault, Paul Godin Marilyn Godin 4th Place Deb McCanna, Tim McCanna, Gary Delphia, Lori Delphia 5th Place Sandy Duffy, Ed Gorchinski, Ed Luce, Judy Luce 6th Place Jon Anderson, Joy Anderson, Pat Manley, Leon Litchfield Check out the upcoming tournaments below and sign up today in the Pro Shop. Golf Tip of the Month: You have been told to keep your head down. This is the worst advice you could ever get. What you really want to do is keep your spine angle tilted the same as at address and through the swing until facing the target looking out. Keep your spine angle through the swing, and you will have the ball air born every time. 5 It s hard to believe; half the boating season is over at Apple Island Marina. There was so little snow this past winter and very few days of rain, thus far, that the lake water level is about a foot lower than the 100 year average. We conducted our third Boat Vermont Boating Safety Course of the season July 18th 21st, and we had 13 students, including one 11 year old. Everyone passed the intense nine hour course. Please check with the Marina for the next scheduled class. Residents and guests are reminded that fishing is not allowed from Apple Island Marina docks. You may fish the state dock, anywhere along the shoreline, or from Lighthouse Point. Apple Island Marina is scheduled to host a Massachusetts Bass Nation tournament on August 13 th and 14 th and a Massachusetts Bass Federation tournament the following weekend. Come down and watch the fish get weighed in. The Marina is open seven days a week from 9:00am 6:00pm. We have pontoon boats that can be rented for half a day (9:00am 1:00pm or 1:30pm 5:30pm) or for a full day (9:30am 5:30pm). We also rent rowboats, canoes, kayaks, and pedal boats by the hour or full day. The boathouse sells last minute essentials like gas, ice, night crawlers, and drinks for a day on the lake. Enjoy the rest of your summer! H a p p e n i n g s a t t h e M a r i n a S a l e s N e ws Even though we had lots of rain for our Annual Open House, the afternoon brought some clear skies. As always, the visitors who have never been to Apple Island before were very impressed with our Resort. Thank you, Residents, for continuing to show what a great community we have! New residents this month include John & Lynn Wolski who will become seasonal residents in HU004 and Sue Mackin in PC010. Please make them feel welcome. Don t forget our referral program. Give me a call or stop by if you have any questions. Please remember, if you are referring someone to the Sales Office, the Sales Referral Form must be presented by you AND the person you are referring on their initial visit. Instructions are on the printed form. I have copies in my office if you need one. Resident Referral Fees for 2016: $ 500 to resident who refers someone who signs a seasonal lease on a site not currently leased $1,500 to resident who refers someone who purchases a new cottage $3,000 to resident who refers someone who purchases a campsite, and $5,000 is the referral fee if someone purchases a site and cottage There is a listing of all units for sale along with pricing on our website at Keep checking the listings as they are updated frequently. 6 Ac t i v i t i e s A b o u n d July was a fun filled month. We started off our 4th of July weekend with our annual Anything with Wheels Parade followed by a free hamburger & hot dog BBQ. We had a super time with DJ Joey playing great music and fun family games. Later that evening, we oohed & aahed at our spectacular Fireworks display. A big thank you to Celebration Fireworks for such a wonderful show. Check out Facebook for a video of the fireworks show, On the July 4 th, we hosted a free Ice Cream Social, & our guests enjoyed many flavors of ice cream. Our Potluck Dinners were delicious, & we had a great variety to choose from. The Golf Cart Poker Run really seems to be catching on. We enjoyed our Christmas in July weekend with a catered dinner by Wetherbee's turkey with all the fixings. And the winners of our Decorate your RV or Cottage Contest were: 1 st Place... Shane, Jessica, & Hayden Morris 2 nd Place... Don & Judi Bradley 3 rd Place... Rheal & Alyce Morin We had our 1 st trip of the season to Akwesasne Mohawk Casino. It was a great getaway! Open Mic Night has been growing, and we had a fun night of Karaoke. We have some amazing singers at Apple Island. Join us every other Wednesday from 6pm-8pm for Open Mic Night. If you or someone you know is interested in coming & playing, feel free to call Lori at for more info. I hope you didn t miss our Annual Luau or the fabulous bands we have had, including The Adams Band, Eddie & The Allstars, The Hit Men, & Shake My Nerves. Our last dinner of the month was catered by Smokin Butts BBQ. If you haven t joined us for Breakfast, then you are missing out. The July 31 st breakfast included pancakes with real VT maple syrup, hash browns, scrambled eggs, eggs to order, assorted cereal, muffins, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, milk, and OJ. Volunteers are needed for the Haunted Forest on August 20th. Please contact our Activities Director, Lori Ploof, at if you are interested in helping. As a reminder, Apple Island Resort tries to keep the cost for dinners low only $8 per adult (except for our specialty Luau dinner which is a little more) so more people can afford to attend. For those that can only attend the dance, there is a $5 cover charge. All events are first come first serve, so groups cannot save seats. We ask that your party arrive at the same time, so everyone has the same opportunity for seating. Thank you for your cooperation. PAGE 6
