Hope everyone is staying cool in the air, or in the pool, in a boat, or on a float! (inspired by Dr. Seuss) I have news for the Fitness Center! We have ordered a new Recumbent Exercise Bike, & I am also researching the costs for new Treadmills. They ve gotten a lot of miles on them! Have you noticed the Tuesday dancing? I have! How exciting is it that we have a competitive ballroom dancer here to show us some impressive steps?! Jon will be there Tuesdays before the social dancing if anyone wants to join a lesson! The grasses are tall & beautiful with wild flowers this year as are all the flower beds! Thank you to our Pat Long for making Apple Island so beautiful! That being said, it is very difficult to see around the grasses when we are driving. Please be extra careful of children on bikes & people in golf carts. Just a courtesy reminder If you have a boat, trailer, camper, or truck parked in the Storage Area, please stay in your designated spot. It will only get busier in the next few months as our D Docks are installed. Please remember to always get a space assigned by the office when parking in the Storage Area. Space is available on a first come first serve basis, but it must be assigned. Our Farmers Market has been very enjoyable. Spread the word! Tell people about it & invite more to join! Interested vendors should contact the office at We would love to see this grow! Last but surely not least, I would like to update everyone on our daughter. She is doing remarkably well. She has had a clear PET scan, & her prognosis is great! She has 3 more treatments to go, & we believe that will be all she needs! Thank you to everyone who has prayed & asked about her. 2 A M e s s a g e f r o m o u r G e n e r a l M a n a g e r APPLE ISLAND RESORT RECEIVES THE COVETED 10/10/10 RATING FROM THE GOOD SAM ORGANIZATION The only RV resort or campground in the State of Vermont to achieve this rating! Recently, representatives from the Good Sam Club, an international organization of recreational vehicle owners, visited Apple Island for their annual ratings inspection. Good Sam is famous for their ratings, which are based on stringent criteria of categories ranging from bathroom cleanliness to effective directional signage and everything in between. I am very proud to announce that Apple Island was awarded their highest possible rating a 10/10/10 rating! The Good Sam s representatives also told me that Apple Island is the only RV resort/campground in the State of Vermont to achieve this rating. I would like to extend my congratulations to the hardworking staff at Apple Island. This achievement came, in no small part, because of the hard work you have put in all season long! Thank you! S a l e s N e ws We are almost halfway through the season already. How time flies! It has certainly been a hot summer thus far. We had our Annual Open House in July. It was a beautiful day & several attendees took the opportunity to walk the grounds. Howard Littleson, General Manager I now have 1 new & 7 pre-owned Cottages for sale. The new model is on EM001, waiting to find a new home. The price has been reduced to $61, with free site rental for the remainder of the season. If you know anyone who is thinking of becoming a resident, please let them know. Please welcome our newest residents: Patrick Buteau & Nancy Boutin...EM026 Mark & Deb Cross...GU008 Tim & Liz Martel...SA005 If you should see them out and about, please say hello. As always, check out our website, for a complete listing of units for sale along with pricing. Keep checking the listings as they are updated frequently. Or come see me at my office in the Community Center. G e n e r a l S t o r e N e w s Ken Duffy, Sales Manager Come in & see our new products Olives, Smoked Salmon, Marinated Veggies, and more. And the candy baskets have been refilled, so check out the new candy! You can even give us suggestions for your favorite candy from childhood. Have you seen our selection of coffee? We can even grind it for you. Join us for our FREE wine tastings from 2pm-4pm: Shelburne Winery on Friday, August 3 rd Snow Farm Vineyard and Winery on August 11 th & August 25 th Don t forget, we are the home of the best sandwiches in town, and we deliver to your campsite! 4 G o l f L i n k s I hope everyone had a fantastic time on the 4th of July! With the summer heat wave, our golfers took a little break from the heat. Due to the hard work of our team members, the course is in incredible shape! A BIG Thank You to Larry Litchfield for being such a big help with our course. Don t forget about our Friday Night Scrambles. They are a fun, low-key affair with everyone enjoying the evening. (See results on next page.) The first Friday of the each month is our Potluck Night after the Scramble. Bring a dish or snack to share & enjoy this event with us. This year has been the Year of Hole-in-Ones!!! Two more were made bringing the total so far to 6. Wow! 6/12/18...Bob Weinberg Hole #8 using a 9 iron 6/21/18...Walter Lotz Hole #7 using a sand wedge Golf Tip of the Month: Replace your old, slippery grips with new ones. The benefit is great! The problem with old, slick grips is you have to grab hard which causes tension in your muscles. The result...poor, unreliable golf shots. You must keep your grip pressure light & consistent. With new grips, you will not have to squeeze too hard, & you can let your muscles relax & be able to make the swinging motion freely. Come on out and join the fun. See you at the first tee! 6 H a p p e n i n g s a t t h e M a r i n a It is amazing to think we are already in the month of August. June showed us a number of beautiful boating days, & July was hot. The Lake Champlain International (LCI) Father s Day Fishing Derby was held on June Apple Island Marina provided space for the weigh-in station, & our team members relayed tournament results to LCI headquarters. We had a terrific turnout, & a quite a few good-sized fish in all categories were caught, put in the tank for spectators to look at, then released. BOATER SAFETY Our final Boater Safety Class for the season is right around the corner August 13, 14, 15 from 7pm-10 pm. Call the Marina to sign you up for this class. If you need a reminder, stop by the Marina Boathouse for your copy of the Handbook of Vermont Boating Laws and Responsibilities or take our Boater Safety Course. Safe Boating Tips Obtain charts of your destination & determine which areas are open to your type of boat. Make a realistic plan & stick to it. Always tell someone of your travel plans & file a float plan. Check the weather forecast for your destination. Plan clothing, equipment, & supplies accordingly. Make sure you have enough fuel & oil for the entire trip. Make sure your owner s manual & registration are on board in waterproof containers. Always carry a Coast Guard approved working fire extinguisher & warning flares. Prepare for the unexpected by packing necessary emergency items. Carry a Global Positioning System (GPS) & know how to use it. Know distress signals & warning symbols. Know your limitations. Apply sunscreen, drink lots of water, & watch your energy level. Make sure your boat is mechanically up to the task. Be prepared with tools, supplies, & a spill kit. Take a boater education course to learn more about navigating waterways & safe and enjoyable boating. BOAT TRAILER STORAGE Storage for a boat trailer is provided free to all Marina customers on a first come first serve basis, as space is available. A completed & signed Marina Storage Agreement must be presented to the Resort Office prior to taking any trailer to storage. A resort team member will then escort you to the storage area to determine a site assignment. The Marina is open 7 days a week from 9am to 6pm. The picnic tables at the Marina are calling your name; come sit, enjoy, meet a new friend, & remember to bring a picnic lunch and admire the beautiful lakeside view. Enjoy the Lake and be safe! 7 Ac t i v i t i e s A b o u n d July was busy! Crafts with Peggy continues every other week with driftwood wreaths & copper wind chimes. Dick began the Pegs & Jokers game with a custom-made board, & Residents organized Pickle Ball play at a nearby North Hero court. Torrential downpours marked the end of June. That didn't stop us from having Game Day during which Preston showed us how to play a mean game of Croquet followed by a water balloon skirmish. Plein Air Bingo debuted on the Golf Clubhouse Deck, during which we discovered that daubing one's nose with ink increased the chances of winning. All four of the daubers won at least once, with one lucky person winning 3 games. Thank you to the golfers who shared their deck with us & even participated in one of the charity rounds. Independence Week at Apple Island included not one, but 2 golf cart parades, an explosive fireworks display, a heat wave, and The Johnny Cash Tribute Band. Local watercolor artist Maurie Harrington led a Sip & Paint afternoon with sunflowers and red wine as the favorite combo. The 90+ degree weather broke just in time for the Chili Cook-Off featuring 5 chefs serving up a wide range of flavors & spices. John Derby won Honorable Mention in a close race for Best Overall, Bill Fox made the Hottest Chili, Sherry Beauchemin had the Sweetest Chili, Brad Fondiler cooked up the Most Creative Chili, & Rich Bangle scored Best Overall. All of the Chilis were delicious! Honorable Mention Hottest Sweetest Most Creative Best Overall Great classic country music by the Dennis Fox Band had people dancing in the grass & by the pool until dark when the mosquitoes crashed the party and sent us swatting home. P.S. Volunteer Opportunities with Activities are available every week. A sign-up sheet is in the office. Volunteers get free food, an invitation to the September Volunteer Appreciation Happy Hour, and Community Pride. Especially needed are party decorators extraordinaire. PAGE 7
