1 NCG Prep School N E W S L E T T E R TERM 2 WEEK Kia ora tatou katoa Dear Parents/Caregivers/Whanau Term 2 has been another busy one with so many of the girls involved in cultural and sporting events both here at school, and within their own lives. Many of you will have enjoyed attending some of our recent sports events, music and drama performances and the girls appreciated seeing you there. As you know, ERO (Education Review Office) visited our school earlier this year as part of their three yearly review cycle for private schools. While here they meet with staff, myself and the BOT, had access to all school documentation, and spent time with pairs of students from every classroom. The report has now been confirmed and feedback from the review team was extremely positive across all areas of teaching and learning at NCG Prep. Some of their feedback: Teachers know the girls as individuals and take a well rounded approach to supporting their learning and well being. There is a strong focus on raising student achievement. Good communication and consultation with parents fostering learning partnerships. Students benefit from: Emphasis on students ownership and management of their learning A broad range of learning experiences and leadership opportunities, such as sports, cultural and environmental activities Positive relationships among students, including with older girls from the College Well developed pastoral care system. It is affirming to have ERO fully endorse the teaching and learning programmes here and the benefits for our students. Over the last few weeks we have had the pleasure of having a couple of guest speakers visiting to speak with the girls. We had Zara Maslin from Attitude, the Youth Education division of The Parenting Place. Attitude has worked with Nelson College for Girls for a number of years and now has programmes and speakers for Year 7 & 8 levels. We selected our own programme on cyber safety and friendships to reinforce learning from Term 1 with John Parsons. Zara fully engaged the girls for an hour discussing cyber safety & friendships as she easily pitched her content and delivery to appeal to the girls. Some of her key points covered were: With social media & access to the online environment you don t get a rest from your friends. Put in boundaries for managing this. TMI - be careful with too much information Communication chaos - LOL - laugh out loud or lots of love? Use emoijs to ensure your message isn t misunderstood. Hopefully your daughter has taken on board these rules around these topics and has shared them with you. Tessa Smith, an ex-prep student, who is heading off to Princeton this year, came and spoke to the girls, and shared her learning journey with them. It was fantastic to hear how she stepped out of her comfort zone and gave things a go, and now, the next step in her journey is being accepted into Princeton! Her words of how Prep challenged & supported her to give anything a go, meant she was open to trying things, which led her to rowing; otherwise, in her words, she was far more comfortable sitting in her room reading a book! We wish her every success for her future. Thank you for your ongoing support of your daughter and our school this term. We wish you all a relaxing holiday. Kind regards, Lucy Feltham, Head Teacher Tel: prep@ncg.school.nz P O Box 842, Nelson, 7040, New Zealand
2 ENVIRO GROUP Although this term has been interrupted by HPAC, the group are optimistic that next term will be more productive. We have lots of groups doing different things like Power saving Vege garden Flower garden Updating our project for the wall at the end of 7TP Our projects pathway along 8VC We want to improve the way we manage paper recycling and encourage people to think about food waste. By Wren Fisher UNDERWATER HOCKEY From the 9th - 12th of June we went to the Centrals Underwater Hockey Tournament which was held in Wellington. We played 7 games in total at the tournament. The Junior Girls B Team, which is our team, won 3 games, lost 3 games and tied 1 game. It was a very tiring tournament, but it was an amazing experience to be part of. It was the first time that we have been to a big tournament like this. There were eight other teams from Nelson and then lots of other teams from Wellington. To play underwater hockey, it helps if you can hold your breath for a long time and have good hand-eye coordination. Even though it s supposed to be a non-contact sport, you can still get hit by the puck, sticks, or someone else s flippers! Two weeks ago we started a miniature tournament here in Nelson, called 4 -aside. Usually there are 6 people in the pool at a time for each team. For the 4 -aside, since there s only 4 in the pol at a time, it s a lot faster and harder and you have to hold your breath for longer! We play in mixed teams for the 4-aside games. This is the first year we have both played Underwater Hockey and it s great fun. Anyone can join the team - just come and see one of us to find out more details. 4 INTER SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY RELAY & CHAMPIONSHIPS On Friday 24 June a team of 24 energetic athletes went to Saxton Field for the Interschool Cross Country Relay. We competed in teams of 4 and each of us had to run 1km. The course was slippery, muddy and very wet - we had a lot of fun swimming through some of the course! Both Year 7A & the Year 8A teams came third in their respective races. It was a great warm up for what was coming next! The following week, saw us heading to Rabbit Island for a 2.4 km cross country race against all the other Intermediate schools in the region. It was a technical, undulating course which pushed us to the limit. The Year 8 team came second, and the overall Year 8 winner was Lucy Martin. The Year 7 team came sixth and Rebecca Hufflett came 2nd in the girls Year 7 race. Brooke Tranter, Bella Richards, Lucy Martin & Rebecca Hufflett made it into the InterRegionals Cross Country Tasman Team and will be heading to Wellington in September. 5 NETBALL Most of you know that every Saturday, nearly the whole of Prep are out on the courts playing netball. All of our teams are trying extremely hard and are doing very well. Who knows, we may even be top of the table in the grade. It s great to hear that there are new skills being learnt every week and new tactics to win games. A big thank you to the coaches and managers who are giving their time to the girls and the teams. We know you have a lot of dedication and knowledge of the game. This is a huge benefit to us all and is helping us become greater netballers. Thank you also to the parents who supported the girls on the sideline and for driving them to and from the games. Well done to everyone! Remember we have a game on this Saturday 9 July. See you there! By Katie Harris & Zoe Stevens DON T DOUBLE DRIBBLE!! BASKETBALL REPORT We have had a great start to the term with basketball roaring off with a couple of wins. There has been great improvement among all the players - some who have never played before to players who have played for many years. We are fortunate to have NCG s Head Girl, Pip Dwyer & Maungatapu s House Captain, Abbey Munro as the coaches for the Prep Flyers team, and Miriam Clark, a very generous mum who is the coach for the Prep Sparks. They have all coached us well and have helped us with our games. We have played a range of different teams, some with tall people and some with short people and of course from a range of different schools. The toughest team that we have had to face was Waimea Intermediate School as they have a big range of sporty kids. Even though they are a tough team they have helped us build our confidence and brought our skill levels up. We are all looking forward to a new term of basketball season with heaps of competition. By Paris Gibbons HOCKEY This season, Zara DC, Alice, Ruby, Neve and myself have been in the Prep School winter hockey team, playing at Saxton Turf every Thursday night. It s been a great season, and the team have won a number of their games and developed their skills. The strength of our team is attacking, as we have good forwards. Fortunately the weather has been on our side, and it s not been very cold or wet for most of the season - this helps when we are playing later in the evenings. One thing our team is focussing working on is getting round defenders and scoring goals! We are looking forward to playing some even more challenging games next season! By India Charles 5
