The closest club was Pine Rivers Cricket Club at Dakabin and it was difficult to get his son to practice. He decided to recruit local boys and make up teams from Albany Creek. At the time there were 3 teams at Pine Rivers made up entirely of Albany Creek boys. Ken Lister, Geoff Sweet and Bruce Patching started the new Albany Creek Junior Cricket Club and signed up 4 teams and joined the Redcliffe & Districts Junior Cricket Association (Zone 6). Although training was in Albany Creek, they still had to travel far and wide to play their matches, as there was no quality home ground. Clubs in the District were located at Redcliffe, Deception Bay, Margate, Bribie Island, Caboolture, Burpengary and Kilcoy. Each player was charged a match fee. This enabled Albany Creek to provide gear for the players and it wasn't long before we had a reputation as the Club with the best equipment for its players - no clubhouse or headquarters, but each team had a well-stocked kit. This policy has been continued until the present. Luckily, we now have a number of good pitches as well as our own clubhouse - the Nest at Brendale. Peter Daff was one of our first selectors at Zone level and for 3-4 years helped in the selection and development of Under 12 players trailing for the Zone 6 Teams. Up until Brisbane North combined Zones 1 & 2, there were two Brisbane competitions played over a number of Sundays - Presidents Cup (Zone A teams) & Presidents Plate (Zone B teams). Players were then selected from Zones 1 (Sandgate/Toombul), 2 (Valleys/Norths) and 6 (Redcliffe Districts) to form the Brisbane North Championship & Development teams. And Now So that was how we started. Let s take a quick look at where we have now, some 20 years later. Page 56 Page 1

We also utilise Sargent Reserve at Eatons Hill and the extremely picturesque ground at Wantima as two of our regular fields, along with many of the local school grounds. In 2008/2009, the club purchased the old club house from the Dog Club and the warehouse boys took on the project of renovating and restoring it to what you see today. They have done a great job. The second Nest is discussed in more detail in the Warehouse section of this document. We have two sets of training nets (F and G) and have just been awarded a $34, grant to upgrade the lighting on the second set of nets (G) on the hockey field). Well done to Gary Logan who put an enormous amount of effort into our grant application and persisted through some very dodgy red tape to achieve this fantastic outcome! The hockey field nets were recently upgraded with new netting and synthetic turf. Both sets of nets are in constant use during the week for training. The final section is still to come. Perhaps we ll be able to talk about it for our 30 year celebrations, along with the acquisition of more grounds for our ever increasing numbers. Several shade shelters have been erected beside Southpine 1 and in between Southpine 2 and the AFL oval. Also, the club has invested in a number of large shade shelters that are also made available to the teams on a Saturday morning and for special events like our Cap Days and Trophy Days. Page 54 Page 3

8 So what makes Albany Creek such a strong and successful club? One reason is our dedicated and hard-working committee, who all work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that all the teams have a great season and that the club runs smoothly. Anyone who has come along to our Cap Days or Trophy Presentation Days would no doubt be aware of how well managed the events are. They usually go off without too many hitches or delays like clockwork really especially now that we ve got the microphone system fixed (thanks Paul). It may appear effortless but a lot of hours have gone into the preparation and planning for these events and on the day we always have a large contingent of volunteers rolling up their sleeves to get the work done. A BIG thanks to all committee members, past and present, for making the club the well-oiled machine it is today! 10 Wickets in an Innings Warehouse (Summer Competition) Player Year Grade Opposition Details Gary Fuss 06/07 B2N Bond XI 10/23 Warehouse (Winter Competition) Player Year Grade Opposition Details Darren Green 2005 B3N Caribbean Hospitals 10/29 9 Wickets in an Innings Warehouse (Winter Competition) Player Year Grade Opposition Details Anthony Jeffers 2010 C2N Everton Comets 9/23 8 Wickets in an Innings As a community club, we are all the club and we encourage our parents to get involved, either by coaching or managing a team; or by being there on Saturday morning to help with the smooth running of the game. At the end of the day, players return from fields near and far, to discuss their day and have a laugh. 2008/2009 also saw the introduction of the great Pie Award courtesy of Keith Boehm of Diggers Pies (who is also a regular in player in one of our teams). Players get points for runs, catches, wickets etc and the person with the highest score for the round wins a family pie from Diggers. So if you hear anyone saying they re a good chance of getting the pie now you ll know what they mean! Since entering of first team in the Warehouse Competition in 1999, we have grown from one winter team and one summer team, to the biggest club in the winter competition, with 9 senior teams and an impressive 6 junior teams. We ve quite a lot of our juniors going on to play grade cricket these days but we ve also got a lot continuing on in our summer warehouse teams. In the 2009/2010 summer season, we fielded 4 senior teams spread across all the divisions. So for those boys who are passionate about the game but don t want to play grade, cricket doesn t need to finish at 15 years of age anymore. Garry Walker works tirelessly for our Warehouse teams. He and his two dogs have become an Albany Creek icon and are seen touring all the grounds on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Without him, our Warehouse division would not be what it is today. In fact, in June of 2008, Garry was awarded a well deserved Life Membership with the club. Warehouse has grown so much, there is now a sub-committee to micro-manage the running of the teams. Mike Whitney has taken on the role of Junior Warehouse Co- Ordinator and he also does a fabulous job. 21 Warehouse Cricket This following appeared in the history compiled by Lorix J. Bertling for the 10 Year Anniversary of incorporation (24th October 2000) celebrated at the Wantima Gold Club and attended by around 100 past and present members. Where do our older players go to continue playing cricket once their junior days are over? Only a very few have gone on to play Grade Cricket and it has always been tough getting into the Grade Clubs. Some of our players have joined Warehouse Clubs but this usually involved joining a team outside our district. Graeme Swinbourne was instrumental in getting the 1 st Warehouse team together in the winter of The side composed a number of our Under 16 players leaving the Junior Club and some more senior players (although not necessarily in ability). The side was entered in the C2 North grade. Again in 2000 Graeme got a team together and it is hoped that Albany Creek will have Winter & Summer Warehouse teams in the future with our Under 16 players continuing their cricket careers with Albany Creek. The spirit of the Warehouse side has been great with father and son combinations, coaches, managers, senior and junior players all enjoying competitive cricket in the winter sun. Even those not playing have enjoyed following the team and we are one of the few teams with scorers - Gary Walker, Warren Wood & Grenville Hughes to name a few. After most games the team esky is opened and over a cool drink the cricket stories emerge. Weather permitting a team BBQ is arranged after a home match and the end of year break-up is a presentation night for the whole family. Most of the above still holds true. The team esky still makes a regular appearance but now the barbeques are generally after most of the games and they happen in the 5-Star comfort of The Nest.
