The opening weekend saw seven teenagers of the eight opening bowlers in the four sides. The Yorkshire League side went down to Driffield but bounced back the week after to take maximum points at Hull, all 10 wickets taken by teenagers. The South Yorkshire Division One side had mixed fortunes with a comprehensive win over Aston Hall B, but were outplayed by Wath in their second fixture. The South Yorkshire Division Three side boasted a victory over Bradfield B in their first game, all four bowlers used were Juniors. They then lost at Tickhill in the second game. The Pontefract League side have lost both their games, but with some encouraging performances from the Juniors. The Junior programme also started in the last week in April, the U13s, with four U11s in their ranks, lost a tight game against Stainborough and the very talented U17s had a comprehensive win at Darfield. The most pleasing aspect of the U17s, is that with our policy of only allowing players who play Senior cricket for the club to play U17s, we are still one of the favourites. Other clubs who will have a say in the U17s title have all brought in players from other clubs to bolster their challenge....he's HAD BETTER STARTS Second team opening batsman, Stephen Walters, walked out to bat on the opening day of the season and walked to the none strikers end. The umpire kindly enquired if he'd wintered well. Stephen responded positively, saying he felt in great nick. His captain then hit the third ball past mid off and called Stephen through for two. Unfortunately, he ran one short, effectively putting himself on minus one. The folllowing over, Stephen was caught behind pushing at a ball that was trapped between bat and pad and ballooned to the keeper. The 'inform' batsman walked off slowly for a score that would make some people burn their kit!! Minus one must be a record?? TOO GOOD AN OFFER TO TURN DOWN!!!!! Barnsley CC would like to wish Perry Youel well as he makes the move up the road to Stainborough. When asked why he was leaving, he retorted, 'I wanna be able to go out Fridays, turn up on Saturday's and earn 30 to 40 a game, am skint!!!' When then asked how much they'd offered him, he replied ' 2.50 a wicket'. All the best in trying to secure your 12 to 16 wickets a game Perry, you will be sorely missed!!!!

Pete Heseltine- Best captain of younger players you will ever see. 14th & 15th of April BOOTH & TROWER STAR BUT RAIN WINS THE DAY Pre-Season Friendly 1st X1 Vs Welbeck Colliery CC - 14th of April The winter waiting was over and the first team finally got onto a cricket field to prepare for the forthcoming season against a fairly strong Nottinghamshire Premier team Welbeck Colliery CC. Hospitality on their part was excellent and the playing area was superb given the weather we have had over recent weeks. Barnsley won the toss and elected to bat on what looked a firm but green pitch. The firsts strength this season, we anticipate, will lie with the bat and therefore they'll hopefully look to post competitive scores the majority of the time.

The new opening partnership of Trower and Wilson had its first run out and for the first few overs things looked solid. Matt then unluckily got a ball that seemed to pop on him and looped straight to their man at gully. As time went on it appeared bowling from one end offered a lot more zip and bounce than the other, this coupled with the strong breeze meant the seamers were alighting for one particular end. Trower then reached his fifty and feeling like he was in decent nick decided to retire. Captain Nuttall was then given run out a couple overs later which brought two new batters to the crease in pretty quick succession. A couple of cheap wickets followed until the evergreen Jason Booth was joined by Greg Walton in the middle. They pushed the score along nicely and accelerated towards the end of the innings well to give us a very respectable score of 193 from our allotted 45 overs. Nuttall gave the new ball to Matt Rushforth who was a winter recruitment from Stainborough CC and Callum Millward. Both impressed with the new ball given it was their first run out of the season, forcing multiple play and misses. Rain w a s forecast for around 4pm and like clockwork it arrived. The game continued through drizzle for about 10 overs on which must have been a nightmare for the bowlers who were having to bowl with a very wet ball. Ali Jahangir bowled a very good spell and removed the Welbeck opening batter in his first over bowling with an only 9-10 over old ball. Going forward using Ali with the newer ball might be something the side look to implement as I was very impressed with his control. Callum Bethel also impressed as when he came on the ball was extremely soft and slippery. Unfortunately we had to come off for rain around half way through the innings which was a shame as the game was competitive and testing for both sides. Welbeck would have been favourites in the position they came off at but all in all a very good yard stick for the season and set Barnsley up nicely for their clash with Driffield.

4 CLUB PROTEST GLENN YATES'S TRANSFER TO ELSECAR CC In the summer of 2009, Glenn Yates came to Barnsley Cricket Club and asked to return to the club to play with his best mate Jason Booth. The club were over the moon that a player of Glenn's calibre wanted to play at Shaw Lane. However, Elsecar CC insisted that he paid the 590 advance he had received in appearance money back to the club. Glenn could not afford to repay the money and asked for a loan from Barnsley CC in order to make the move. The club agreed and paid the money to Elsecar CC. In Glenn's two stints at the club, he has never been a professional for Barnsley, and stated he would pay back any money loaned. Glenn then had three seasons back at Shaw Lane, and failed to pay any subs, leaving debts of over 1,000. One week before the season started, Glenn approached first team coach Gary Nuttal about a transfer back to his former club. Obviously Glenn was told of his outstanding debts to the club and we couldn't sign a form until the money was sorted. Unfortunately, Elsecar's hypocritical stance, less than four years after insisting Glenn's debts at their club were paid, was to refuse to acknowledge that Glenn had any debts and approached the South Yorkshire Senior Cricket League. Glenn Yates, without a signed transfer form and without any monies repaid to Barnsley CC, played the first game of the season against Hallam. As yet, how he was allowed to play is beyond anyone at Shaw Lane. We'll keep you posted on the outcome of this debacle. K 3 POSITIVES TO TAKE FROM OUTING AT OTLEY Pre- Season Friendly 2nd X1 v Otley Cricket Club The 2nds had a good run out at the picturesque setting of Otley Cricket Club, where they lost by Runs, in their warm up friendly. The home side won the toss and decided to bat and made a steady start as the bowling attack was led by two debutants. 16 year old Reece Sellers and Somerset second eleven player Harry Rouse. Each bowled 4 overs with Rouse picking up the first two wickets. Matt Rushforth and Beck Frostick were introduced into the attack and the former added to the wickets tally, to leave Otley on 47 for 4. Partnerships were hard to forge on the green surface and Otley decided that attack was the best form of defence. 15 year old Ben Cherry was hit for some lusty blows before Rushforth then swapped ends and snared another wicket. Otley continued to find the boundaries until Ahmad Yar was introduced. He took three quick wickets as the home side finished on 181 all out. Barnsley then made the worst possible start with Greg Walton cleaned up first ball. Rouse then followed as Barnsley limped to 14 for 2. Walters and Clayton looked to rebuild and the former had made 35 before he was out. Captain Clayton went on to make an unbeaten 57 not out as Barnsley finished 34 short but a fine performance against a side who finished fourth in the competitive Aire-Wharfe League, Prem Division in K3 DENTAL STUDIO 27 Peel Parade. Due to a slightly weakened bowling attack captain Steven Nuttall won the toss and opted to bat. This decision seemed like a good one throughout the first half of the game with Jon Trower and fellow opener Matt Wilson accumulating runs steadily. The first Barnsley Wicket fell just after drinks with the score on 92. It was the aggressor of the two batsmen Jon Trower who tempted Wilson relaxes after his 77 to lift Driffield's skipper Dave Brent over mid off. Jon miscued his shot and mid off took a simple catch which brought Barnsley's skipper to the crease. The partnership between Wilson and Nuttall was a vital one in terms of the visitors reaching an above par total and just as the partnership was at 60 with both batters looking to become more expansive, Nuttall was stumped off the the bowling of the impressive slow left armer Nick Hardgrave. This brought to the crease debutant Harry Rouse who wasted no time in getting his Barnsley career started. Harry scored very freely and along with Matt Wilson put together another fruitful partnership. When Matt was out on 77 from 153 balls the hopes of achieving an above par score took a hit. Tom Shaw then came to the crease and started slowly due to the excellent bowling of Hardgrave, highlighting the importance of having men who have their eye in within the last 5 overs of an innings. Rouse continued to accelerate and was out in the last over on a score of 45 from 36 balls, a very good start to the season for him. On reflection most people agreed that the score was competitive but possibly runs short. The bowling performance needed to be strong to seal the victory. Harry Rouse and Callum Millward opened the bowling for Barnsley and both failed to make any real impression on the Driffield opening pair. Callum struggled with his run up and bowled numerous no balls which didn't get the innings off on the right foot. At times Harry and Callum looked threatening and both passed the outside and inside edge of the bat on a couple of occasions but no clear chances were created. 20th of April

In an effort to make something happen captain Nuttall rang the changes and brought on another debutant Matt Rushforth. Matt started a little shaky but eventually settled into a good rhythm, passing the edge of Ben Kohler-Cadmores bat on numerous occasions and eventually removing Driffield's other opening batsman with the help of a catch from Jon Trower in the covers. With the pitch not offering much in terms of sideways movement it was vital that the bowlers discipline was high in terms of line and length in order to create pressure, this never really happened as Ali Jahingir struggled to consistently hit a good line and length when he was introduced into the attack. Ali has a big season ahead of him with this being first full Yorkshire League season at Barnsley and he would have been looking to get a better performance under his belt. Tom Goldsby-West was then brought into the attack, and he immediately made an impression on the game. Bowling a consistent line and length he troubled both batsmen and managing to remove Kohler-Cadmore by trapping him on the crease in front. This brought Driffield's overseas to the middle, he has huge boots to fill for the Kingsmill Lane boys. The Barnsley bowlers tried their hearts out to remove either of the new batsmen to no avail, eventually Driffield knocking off in with little over 10 overs to spare. All in all a humbling first outing for the 1st XI, but by no means embarrassing.

YAR STARS AS SECONDS TAKE FULL POINTS 2nds at home to Aston Hall B Barnsley's Division One side in the South Yorkshire Senior Cricket League, got off to the best possible start at home to newly promoted Aston Hall B. Andrew Clayton won the toss and decided to bat first, to give his new look side a chance to ease into their new roles. It looked the wrong decision as the home side got off to the worst possible start. Clayton and opening partner were both back in the hut after two overs with the score on 2 for 2. Clayton had made one before he got a leading edge straight into the air and was snaffled by midwicket. Walters then squeezed a ball into the leg side and was well caught by keeper Hirst. That brought Malkin and Benson together, who battled hard to repair the damage. Malkin had reached 15, and the score 51 when he chipped a ball to mid off Anthony Firth off James Green. That brought debutant Antony Clarke to the crease and he took the attack to the Aston Hall bowlers. The pair had added Ahmed Yar's 7 for 11 proved enough 54, the bulk of which made up from for the seconds first win lusty blows from Clarke, before Benson tamely offered a catch to short mid wicket having made 26 and gave Nigel Walker his first wicket. Sam Shaw lasted just four balls, again a tame catch to mid wicket. At 105 for 5 and with plenty of overs to spare, it was time to dig in but Clarke fancied taking the game to Aston Hall. He passed 50, and had reached 62 before he was caught at long on to a fantastic one handed catch, his innings included 3 fours and 3 sixes and lasted 55 balls. From then on, Beck Frostick soon ran out of partners and the last five wickets fell for just 8 runs, Beck was last out for 16 as he ran past one and was stumped. It was Walker's 7th wicket for just 31 runs, leaving Barnsley with a slightly below par 141 all out in just 35.4 overs. Barnsley needed early wickets and 16 year old Reece Sellers and 15 year old Beck Frostick opened up and the latter snared the first two wickets. Aston Hall then looked solid as Ross and Saxelby added 40 runs. That brought Barnsley spinner Ahmed Yar on, and at 53 for 2, he completely changed the game. He took the next seven wickets for just 11 runs. Aston Hall were soon shot out as Yar and Clarke tied them down, only going for 12 runs in 16 overs. Yar was denied the last wicket by Clarke but he was definitely the star as the home side took full points.

8 THIRDS START WITH A WIN AS CHERRY LEADS THE WAY WITH BAT AND BOWL Cherry started his Senior career well Barnsley's young third team got the season off to a flyer with a hard fought low scoring victory against Bradfield 2nd XI. Put into bat on a slow wicket, openers John Millward and Ben Cherry immediately looked at ease against the new ball, scoring freely and having a good understanding when running between the wickets. After a partnership of 60, Ben Cherry(31) was bowled and the score soon became 63 for 3 after the dismissals of John Millward (24) and Dane Froggett. It was left to Spencer Lavender (14) and Sam Langley(15) to rebuild the innings but when these two were dismissed, Barnsley slumped to disappointing 116 all out given the positive start. Bowlers of note for Bradfield were juniors Workman (3 for 10) and Jones (3 for 19). Bradfield's reply never got started with youngsters Jamie Allsop and Ben Cherry producing an excellent opening spell of bowling. In addition, first change bowlers teenagers James Exley (1 for 27) and Jake Hepworth (1 for 26) bowled well and only Bradfield's man mountain of a captain, Phil Clark (34) reached double figures. Jamie Allsop ( ) was unlucky to only have two wickets to his name, but the main plaudits went to 15 year old, Ben Cherry whose figures of were exceptional. The only slight concern was 30 extras but overall all concerned were very pleased at the result. Result Barnsley 3rds XI won by 16 runs FOURTHS CAN'T CAPITALISE ON GREAT START The fourths couldn't make the most of a great start when they had last season's relegated Wakefield side, Crofton 2nd X1 at 39 for year old Jacob Hadfield and captain Steve Maddock had done the damage early doors after Barnsley had won the toss and put the home side into bat. Hobbs then rebuilt the innings making 52, and was backed up by both Rider (21) and Railton (29). Steve Clifford was introduced into the attack and took the remaining four wickets to finish with figures of 4 for 40. However, Barnsley couldn't bowl the home team out and they finished on 159 for 9. Barnsley's reply never really got off the ground, with Hobbs, Rider and Railton, this time with the ball, reducing Barnsley to 79 all out. The away side could never get partnerships going, the highest being 14, and lost wickets at regular intervals. Junior, Tom Clifford top scored with 12. Nuttall again called correctly and had no hesitations in batting first again. The innings got off to another solid and steady start with JT hitting a sublime cover drive to get the griffins on the scoreboard. Smooth progress was made until Trower unluckily played on from Hull off spinner Tom Dimilane with he score at 38. This brought Nuttall to the crease who misjudged a leave and was bowled by Hulls impressive 15 Back to back half year old opening bowler Harrison. Harry centuries for Wilson Rouse was soon back in the shed as well, bowled by Harrison also. With the score at 42-3 Barnsley were in danger of capitulating to a rather mediocre score, but a very mature knock from Tom Shaw coupled with the in form Wilson got Barnsley up to just over 100 before the next wicket fell Shaw continued after Wilson's departure, choosing when to attack and when to defend on what was becoming a very dusty and uneven pitch. Jason Booth was another of the Barnsley top order who struggled to make an impression due to a very good delivery from former Durham CCC player David Barrick. Tom Shaw was then joined by Ali Jahangir. The youngsters grafted their way to a 43 run stand which showed maturity beyond both their years under extreme pressure on a very difficult wicket to bat on. Greg Walton and Callum Bethel added an extra boost towards the end of the innings and in doing so ensured the South Yorkshire men posted a very respectable from their allotted 55 overs. The job of setting the trend for the innings with the ball was again given to Harry Rouse and Callum Millward. Callum made the first breakthrough and very quickly struck again within 2 balls to send Hull reeling at Nuttall was Quick to remind his bowlers of the constant aggressive batting tactics that Hull always adopt and made sure they stuck to their disciplined areas. Harry Rouse's persistence paid off when he clean bowled danger man Peter Shally who last year made a Yorkshire League double hundred. After the openers spells had finished the score was round 60-3 from 13 overs. A very good effort from the young openers, vast improvements from last week. Nuttall then turned to Ali Jahangir and the experience of his father Gary. Both started adequately and ensured the Hull batsmen never got away from them. Gary created a couple of good chances, one edge through a vacant 2nd slip and one very close LBW call which to the bewilderment of Gary and keeper Tom Shaw was given as byes. After a tight 3 overs Gary was taken off by the skipper and Callum Bethel was brought into the attack. The combination of Callum and Ali proved to be a winning formula as the Hull batsmen struggled to rotate the strike and runs quickly dried up. Hull collapsed from 90-4 to 129 all out, Bethel recording figures of 3-22 and Jahangir It is clear to see that the two young spinners have a very bright future at Shaw Lane and with a few Yorkshire League seasons under their belts they will prove to be a serious threat to any team. Barnsley record their first points of the 2013 season with a full points victory over Hull in what turned out to be quite a convincing win. Onwards and upwards.

Clayton asserted himself at the top of the order, and combined stout defence with good stroke play. Malkin, struggled and was adjudged in front on 3 to leave Barnsley 36 for 2. Clarke joined his captain but soon lashed at a full ball and was cleaned up for 5. Paul Benson made 12 before he was caught and that brought Sam Shaw to the wicket. Sam helped his captain add 42, with Clayton passing fifty before he parted for Beck Frostick's 54 with the score on year development continues to old Beck Frostick then continued impress all at the club his impressive start to the season, looking in no trouble. Frostick bowled his 7 overs for just 16 runs. Clayton introduced himself into the attack and was one of the better bowlers, taking the first wicket, bowling Hopkins for 29. He then used seven bowlers trying to earn another wicket and Malkin's left arm darts brought Clayton a catch to remove Bell on 62. That didn't stop Wath reaching their target within 40 overs, helped by 36 extras and a stark reminder that you cannot bowl and field this way and expect to win in what is still a highly competitive league.

12 CHERRY STARS AGAIN BUT TICKHILL PROVE TOO STRONG Barnsley found to their cost that the old adage of 'catches win matches' still applies to the beautiful game. Barnsley captain, Andy Froggett, won the toss and had no hesitation in inserting the hosts after a heavy downpour of hailstone. Despite Tickhill losing their opener in the first over, the wicket played well and the score moved briskly on to 48 for 1 when James Exley (1 for 17) had Tickhill captain Paul Shepherd (30) caught at first slip by Richard Ledger. Thomas Collier-Taylor (1 for 46) bagged his first wicket of the season after some smart work behind the stumps by Andy Froggett when he stumped Matthew Kilvington for 38. Richard Ledger (3 for 56) rolled back the years with a fine spell of seam bowling but wasn't helped by his fielders after several catches were dropped and Tickhill managed to amass a decent total of 213 for 7. Jamie Allsop (2 for 47) was the other wicket taker for Barnsley. Barnsley's reply stumbled to 20 for 3 when John Millward (2), Sam Langley (3) and Spencer Lavender (3) were all dismissed cheaply. Youngster Ben Cherry and Richard Ledger (14) steadied the ship until the score reached 65 and Ledger was caught out. Dane Froggett also scored 14 when he was caught and bowled and that brought Harsha Perera to the wicket and he excited the people watching with a swashbuckling 30 until he was trapped in front. Captain Andy Froggett (21*) joined Ben Cherry at the wicket and ensured Barnsley earned a point, Ben Cherry carrying his bat for an excellent 66. Result Tickhill won by 48 runs HEPWORTH PERFORMS WELL BUT WOMBWELL PREVAIL Jake Hepworth made a good impression in the fourth team but Maddock's side went down by 79 runs to Wombwell 2nd X1, as Barnsley's batting again let them down and were skittles for 79 for the second week on the bounce. Hepworth opened the bowling with Jacob Hadfield missing, and the new ball looks in good hands when those two can link up. He finished with 2 for 29 from his 12 overs. However he was overshadowed by debutant Ben Elmore who took 4 for 43 as Wombwell finished on 158 for 8 from their 46 overs. Again partnerships were the key with Tom Clifford top scoring for the second consecutive week, he and Sam Maddock (12) shared the highest partnership of 25. Wombwell's representative U15 leg spinner, Corey Wyatt, then took centre stage as he reduced Barnsley from 74 for 4, to 79 all out. Wyatt's 4 for 11 was enough to ensure an early finish. Result Wombwell 2nd X1 won by 79 runs.

13 Colts Corner UNDER 17s, 13s AND 11s ALL REGISTER EARLY SEASON WINS Barnsley's Junior Section campaigns got off to a good start at the end of April. There were notable contributions from talented Juniors at the club. Teams in all age groups that competed in April, registered victories. With the U15s yet to play the U11s, U13s and U17s all got a tick in the win column. UNDER 17s Beat Darfield by 8 wkts. The U17s, boasting one Yorkshire League player and three second teamers, were far too strong for Darfield. Four Senior team opening bowlers and three top spinners make the U17s a seriously strong bowling unit. Captain Callum Gough asked the home side to bat and a run wasn't scored in front of square before the 8th over. However, the introduction of leg spinner Thomas Collier-Taylor was the defining moment as he took a hat trick and finished with figures of 5 for 15, in a total of 68 for 7. Lavender starred with bat finishing unbeaten on 37 from 48 balls. RECORD 1-0 UNDER 13s Lost to Stainborough by 10 wkts. A very young Barnsley U13s lost a good game of cricket to Stainborough on the opening night of the season. Barnsley batted first and 12 year old Luke Heald top scored with 25, as Barnsley posted 102 for 7 from there 20 overs. Stainborough then put themselves in the box seat with a powerful 30 retired, from George Sharp. He was backed by Swaby and Fearnley who remained unbeaten, knocking the runs off with 9 balls to spare. Barnsley used 8 bowlers to no avail. Beat Elsecar by 13 runs. With four of their U13s back, Barnsley recorded their first win at Elsecar. Adam Guest retired on 30 and Will Towler made 28 not out as they posted 99 for 2. Elsecar to the game to wire but fell just short, making 86 for 9. Barnsley just failing to bowl the home side out and take the full points. Captain Towler making a top all round performance with 2 wickets, as did 11 year old Jack Riley. RECORD 1-1 UNDER 11s A beat B by 72 runs. A strong Barnsley A batted with controlled aggression reaching a net score of 326 against a young Barnsley B team who in turn batted beyond their years finishing on a net score of 249. Under 10 Charlie Worth top scored with 19 from 8 deliveries and took 2 for 4 from 3 overs with his off-spin. Wicketkeeper Finlay Hunt starred with the bat for Barnsley B with 16 from 14 balls. Overall it was very encouraging for both teams.
