SENIOR FIRE and FALL PREVENTION PROGRAM THURSDAY, AUGUST 10:30AM The Tiffin Fire/Rescue Division s Senior Fire and Fall Prevention program was developed to help protect the many older adults living in the City of Tiffin. This one-hour class covers topics including cooking and electrical safety, ideas for avoiding falls at home, and what to do in an emergency. Through an interactive discussion, participants will leave with a better understanding of how to prevent these types of occurrences from happening. Information will also be included about the Be Safe in Your Home program, where a firefighter can come to your home and make recommendations to help keep you and your family safe from fire and falls. The Tiffin Fire/Rescue Division is looking forward to presenting this new program to the members and friends at the Allen Eiry Center. Please call to reserve your seat. This is free and open to the public. Thank you! Allen Eiry Center News Activities, Events, Travel, and More PHONE: (419) HOPEWELL AVE., TIFFIN, OHIO JULY 2017 HOURS Mon. Fri. 8:30am 4:00pm (except Holidays) Volume 59 Member Registration Date for NEW single day trips: MONDAY, JULY 10, 2017 Doors will open at 8:30AM NOTICE TO ALL AEC MEMBERS This is an official notice Nominations for membership to the Board of Trustees may be made by any member of the Center. These nominations must be received by the Membership/Nominating Committee no later than July 15, The Membership/Nominating Committee shall review all nominations and finalize a recommended slate of candidates for presentation to the Board at their September meeting. Please contact the Executive Director or a Board Member of your nomination by July 15, Thank you. The Allen Eiry Center recently received a bequest from the family of Eugene Good. Gene was a very active member of the Center when we were located in downtown Tiffin and on Orchard Park. He was the owner of Good s Office Supply store on S. Washington St., Tiffin. Son, Steve Good and daughters Carolyn Shumway and Patty Good presented a generous gift to AEC May 18, Gene s generosity and graciousness will be remembered by all who participate in events at the Allen Eiry Center. Mr. Good traveled with the Center when Daryl Gordon was our Travel Coordinator. Daryl shared a few memories with us about Gene...I will always remember him as a gentleman and a dapper dresser! He was always helping people on and off the bus on our trips. I remember when we traveled to Atlantic City and went to a night club, Gene came dressed in a studious sport coat and looked so nice! On our trips he would always come to supper with his sport jacket on. Gene was a Perfect Gentleman of the Old School. Member of the Month CHERYL (Sherry) DODOK Sherry was born in Minneapolis and moved 11 times throughout her childhood up until she was married. While living in Cleveland she worked at the Lutheran Hospital as a nurse for several years and more recently worked at Mercy in Tiffin. Sherry retired after 45 years of helping and taking care of people. Many who know her would say she still loves to help and care for people. Sherry s family includes two sons, one in Cleveland and the other in Texas, along with one granddaughter, two step granddaughters and a step grandson who also live in Texas. She has taken some time to travel to places like Maine and Florida, but her two favorites are Colorado and Hawaii because the culture is different and the scenery is so beautiful. Two memorable moments from Hawaii were seeing the Memorial at Pearl Harbor and the helicopter ride through the canyons to see the waterfalls and beaches where several movies were filmed. Many things that Sherry enjoys are reading, walking with her dog, gardening and knitting in her free time. She became a member of AEC four years ago when she heard about the organization through her friends who are members. Knitting class, making friends and traveling are what she enjoys most about the Allen Eiry Center. There is always something interesting going on at AEC! One of the best trips I have taken with the Center was going back stage at the Playhouse Square in Cleveland. I lived in Cleveland most of my life and have gone to plays but back stage was just so interesting! I asked Sherry what kind of books she reads most often and she told me she enjoys the Historical novels with the different generations throughout each book. Her best way to start off the day is watching the sunrise and sitting on her patio listening to the birds. I also love the lake, but I don t like being in the water...i m an observer Some advice that Sherry gave me was to be good to people and you will get it in return. She also told me that happiness is very important in life and money isn t what it is always about. Sometimes we may think we aren t successful, but if we are happy doing what we are doing, then that is being SUCCESSFUL! Submitted by: Breanna Beard, AEC Secretary

2 Dear AEC Members, Good news...our membership continues to grow! That means we must be offering and doing things that interest many. With a wide array of members we do want to try new things to get more people involved. Please let us know if you have an idea that you would like to share, whether it is a trip or something to try at the Center. Maybe you have a talent that you would enjoy sharing/teaching. We can not guarantee that we will be able to do everything but if it is feasible and time & space are available we would like to try it. As a United Way agency, we are required to turn in a quarterly report on the usage of our facility and activities. Our outcome measurements between 2015 and 2016 include an increase in participation of 21% in our Health-Exercise category and a 32% increase in our Educational events. We are offering more programs/classes and they are growing in size. The time has come that groups need to occasionally share space. Please understand that this is a good problem and that we appreciate your understanding when sharing an area. Fundraising is a necessity in our organization. Our main annual fundraiser is our October Calendar which raised over $11, in Currently we are soliciting for prizes to fill our 2017 October Calendar. If you would like to donate a prize please call the Center and speak with Sara or Diane. Each member will receive a calendar in the August newsletter. Help will be needed to sell the calendars to friends, neighbors, at the downtown Tiffin Farm Market August through September, our rummage sale, and other events. If you are able to help out please let us know. Volunteers are very important to the AEC organization. The more volunteers who donate their time and energy for our fundraisers, the lighter the workload for the rest of us. If you would like to be a volunteer we would love to hear from you. AEC is funded by our $25 annual membership cost, Tiffin-Seneca United Way, and grants and donations that we receive. Our organization is not government funded. To be able to offer so much to our members we need to continue our fundraising and working together is FUN! The Allen Eiry Center is governed by 15 active board members. These individuals give a great deal of time and thought into decisions that are made to make this organization a viable part of our community and meet the needs of those 50 years of age and older. Please share information about the Allen Eiry Center with your friends. Word of mouth is our best marketing resource. We always want you to feel welcomed and comfortable when you are involved with AEC. We would love to be your home away from home! Thank you for supporting AEC! They are closed on Wednesdays sooo they are opening up just for us! I have hired Andrew Martin to perform magic after dinner. Andrew comes highly recommended by many. Andrew Martin has been perfecting and performing his special brand of magic-comedy for over 25 years. Andrew s first paid performance took place at his local library when he was just 11 years old. In order to keep pace with the heavy demand for his services, at the age of 22 Andrew turned professional and dedicated himself entirely to magic. He has made his living at it ever since. There is something delightfully zany about Andrew. He has a natural flair for the comic as well as top rated magical skills.
