1 IHYC FLOATING FRIEND- SHIPS FOR 55 YEARS Volume 55 Issue 1 January 2018 The Commodore's Comments - Commodore Dan Bright Happy New Year! It is my honor to serve as IHYC's 55th Commodore. I'm excited to make this year another great one and with the assistance of the Bridge, BOD's, Women's Aux and YOU I'm sure it will be. I would like to thank P/C Jamie Schmitt for all the hard work and club improvements that under his leadership and guidance were accomplished in I have been asked many times what it is like to serve on the Bridge. While there have been challenges I can honestly say I have enjoyed my time at each station along the way to the Commodore's Chair. One thing I have learned - its not always about what the club can do for you, but what you can do for the club. I encourage and look forward to seeing every member attend monthly meetings, fish-fry's, bar nites and club functions. The past two years, many much needed club improvement projects were completed and a lot of money was spent. While there will always be projects needing attention my goal this year will be to increase membership. COMING January January Fish Fry 09 January General Meeting 8pm 14 January Installation of Officers 1pm 27 January Turkey Dinner 5pm This past year IHYC endured great loss and our membership numbers are at a historic low. With everyone's help I know we can turn this around and make our club strong again. In the coming month I will be forwarding a new membership packet to everyone. The goal is to put the word out that IHYC is about family, fellowship and good boating times - and hopefully with YOUR help by spreading the word we can increase our numbers and show why we are one of the premier yacht club's in the region. 6 INNER HARBOR NEWS January 2018 PAGE 6 Fish Fry Eric Mowry It s a new year and a fresh start for the fish fry. Hopefully we can rebound from the less than stellar numbers of Remember, this is a major fundraiser for your club and it needs the support from the membership to help make it successful. If you haven t been to a fish fry in awhile, I urge you to give it a try again. I feel there have been many improvements made to ensure a better quality meal. So let s start the year right and keep Team One busy all night long. We have several openings on Team 3 that need to be filled so please contact me if you would like to help out. Hopefully each team has discussed and designated a Team Captain to help out with some of the responsibilities for their respective teams. If you are one of these Captains, please contact me so I know who you are will absolutely be my last year as Fish Fry Chairman. So please consider stepping up and taking on the duties of one of our biggest club fundraisers. The sooner someone decides to take it on, the sooner I can work with that individual to make for an easy transition. 7 INNER HARBOR NEWS January 2018 PAGE 7 8 Telltale Signs That the Used Boat You re Buying Could be a Storm-Damaged Lemon ALEXANDRIA, Va., December 6, While many of the more than 63,000 boats damaged as a result of 2017 hurricanes will be repaired and have more years of life on the water, some used boat buyers in 2018 could end up with storm-damaged lemons. The nation s largest advocacy, services and safety group for recreational boaters, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS), cautions used boat buyers that some boats affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma are beginning to hit the market, and that getting a prepurchase survey (called a Condition and Value survey) is very important. It s not that you don t want to buy a boat that s been repaired, but you should have full knowledge of the repairs and know they were done correctly. It s a transparency issue that will help you negotiate a fair price, said BoatUS Consumer Affairs Director Charles Fort. The boating group offers eight tips to help you spot a boat that might have been badly damaged in a storm: 1. Trace the history. When a car is totaled, the title is branded as salvaged or rebuilt, and buyers know up front that there was major damage at some point in the car's history. But only a few states brand salvaged boats Florida and Texas do not and some states don't require titles for boats. Anyone wishing to obscure a boat's history need only cross state lines to avoid detection, which can be a tipoff. Look for recent gaps in the boat's ownership, which may mean that it was at an auction or in a repair yard for a long time. 2. Look for recent hull repairs. Especially on older boats, matching gelcoat is very difficult. Mismatched colors around a repaired area are often a giveaway and may signal nothing more than filler under the gelcoat, rather than a proper fiberglass repair. 3. Look for new repairs or sealant at the hull-todeck joint. Boats that bang against a dock during a storm often suffer damage there. 4. Evidence of sinking. Check for consistent corrosion on interior hardware, such as rust on all hinges and drawer pulls. You might be able to spot an interior waterline inside a locker or an area hidden behind an interior structure. 5. Corrosion in the electrical system. Corrosion on electrical items, such as lamps, connectors and behind breaker panels might mean the boat sank recently. Does the boat have all new electronics? Why? 6. Look for evidence of major interior repairs. Fresh paint or gelcoat work on the inside of the hull and engine room is usually obvious. All new cushions and curtains may be a tipoff, too. 7. Look for fresh paint on the engine. It may be covering exterior rust as well as interior damage. 8. Ask the seller. In some states, a seller isn't required to disclose if a boat was badly damaged unless you ask. If the seller hems and haws, keep looking.
