4 Member SPOTLIGHT CLIPPER MAGAZINE Q&As with Nicole Devitt, Multimedia Solutions Representative What is your business? What services do you offer? Clipper Magazine is a response-driven, direct mail magazine that targets residents throughout Central PA and beyond. It features coupon offers and deals to area restaurants, retailers and other local businesses. Our categories of products and services run the gamut from home and automotive to beauty/health and fitness to entertainment and family fun and more! We also offer competitively priced solo direct mail products, custom-designed mobile apps, and other marketing products for all-sized businesses. What makes your company unique or different from your competition? We have a full saturation in our markets and our brand recognition is second to none. For continued exposure long after the magazine is mailed, all of the advertisers coupons and deals are on our LocalFlavor.com website and mobile app. For select types of advertisers, we also have the unique ability to offer half-price certificates that will cover the cost of their print ads so the business owner has no out-of-pocket advertising expenses. How are you moving your company forward? By joining the Chamber and participating in the networking events, I m hoping to bring new awareness to our prod- Nicole Devitt ucts that have been in this community for over 35 years. I believe that having a local presence in the community helps drive recognition of our products. How did you end up in your current line of work? It was an easy decision for me. When I was looking for a new career, I discovered Clipper Magazine was hiring. After some research, I just knew it would be a perfect fit for me and my work ethic. Not only did I already personally use Clipper Magazine coupons and the Local Flavor.com website long before I was an employee, I fully believe in its effectiveness and usefulness for the local consumer. In addition, I LOVE working with small business owners and utilizing my creativity (and art minor degree) to help create powerful ads that motivate consumers to engage with our clients. I find it satisfying to be able to produce results that so many business owners are looking for. Their success equals my success. On a corporate level, I love how each team member at Clipper takes pride in their work and seems to truly care about our clients. What makes you most proud of your company? The thing that I love about Clipper Magazine is how well known and respected it is within the community. For over 35 years, we have delivered a quality product that both business owners and consumers look forward to each month. There is truly nothing more satisfying than hearing stories from people who look forward to going through their Clipper each month to see what new deals and new businesses are in there. Clipper has a great reputation and the people behind Clipper live up to it as well. We began as a small company out of Lancaster County and grew to the national level but we have been able to keep our small town values and remain community focused. What is the most challenging part of your job? The most difficult aspect of my job involves the initial meetings with the owners of established businesses when they are successful in their operations but have less understanding of what constitutes effective advertising. They may have become jaded by other promotional companies that were solely interested in making the sale rather than helping market their brand. My challenge is overcoming these types of past experiences and helping the owners to understand that I m not looking to sell them a bill of goods but am seeking to partner with them. My primary goal is to work with them, to help them grow their businesses even further and to guide them toward products that will fit their specific needs. What is the best part of your job? The best part of my job is partnering with my clients and figuring out the optimum solutions that will help them achieve their goals. I encourage my clients to look at their long-term goals and the big picture rather than just selling them a short-term product. I invest a lot of myself in their business, and I pride myself on seeing them grow and succeed. Their success is my success. Why did you become a member of the Mechanicsburg Chamber of Commerce? As a previous member of the Chamber, I jumped at the opportunity to join under Clipper Magazine. I ve always loved the feel that the Chamber brings to a business and the relationship it gives you with the community. Through the years, I ve always liked how Jeff and Jaime promoted and encouraged relationships among Chamber members. The Chamber offers wonderful opportunities for net-
5 working through a variety of events, and I ve been fortunate enough to have made many business connections over the years that have also turned into wonderful friendships. What was your first job? I m fortunate to have had a strong work ethic instilled in me at a very young age. I first began earning money when I was old enough to push a lawn mower or walk around the neighborhood offering to shovel snow from my neighbors driveways. As a young girl, I also constantly babysat to earn as much money as possible. My first real job began at Burger King when I was 15 years old. (It was difficult to find employment at 15 years of age since many places required you to be at least 16 years old.) I wanted to work and make money and this was my option. Needless to say, I haven t stopped working since. Nicole Devitt Heart-Healthy Valentines Day Tips Indulge your love with a heart-healthy gift Someone may hold the key to your heart this Valentine s Day, but you hold the key to keeping that heart in good shape for years to come. February is American Heart Month so Valentine s Day is a good time for five romantic and heart-healthy gift ideas. 1. Spice it up Many restaurants offer heart-healthy menus but you have more control over what goes into your meal by cooking it yourself. Give your loved one the gift of healthy cooking classes. Many restaurants, schools and organizations offer classes on how to cook healthy food. It s a great way to taste new food, learn something that will last a lifetime, and give you an excuse for a romantic candlelight dinner at home. 2. Something sweet You don t have to avoid a little chocolate on Valentine s Day. Just offer your sweetheart some dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate. Studies show that some amounts of dark chocolate can help reduce the risk of heart problems. 3. Toast your love You need something to go with that dark chocolate. How about a little red wine? Studies show that red wine in moderation may help prevent heart disease. 4. Massage The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that relaxation and stress relief are important for good heart health. You can melt that stress away with a couples massage. 5. Work it out Exercise is important for a healthy heart. Give your special someone something that will make their workout more enjoyable. Try sports gear, a new workout outfit, or a gym membership. Does your Valentine like to dance? Turn up the music and hit the dance floor. Get out, get active, and get healthy together.
6 Short-term Highway Bill Passes with Tax Compliance Provisions; Big Change-up for Partnership and C Corp Due Dates Although its highway funding provisions are only temporary, the Surface Transportation and Veterans Health Care Choice Improvement Act that was signed into law on July 31, 2015 contains several permanent tax law provisions. Notably, starting with 2016 tax returns filed in 2017, the due dates for partnership returns and C corporation returns will switch places. For calendar year businesses, the due date for Form 1065 will be March 15 and the due date for Form 1120 will be April 15. Other provisions in the bill include changes to the mortgage interest statement Form 1098, basis reporting, HSA provisions for veterans, and the ACA employer mandate with respect to veterans health coverage.
