2 Chapter Director s Two Cents Verna & Vernon Dudley Hi again family, 17 chapter members were at our meeting tonight along with 17 visitors making it a wonderful place to be. We had a great time and we were so pleased to see Mitch from NC-K2 who will be going to the hospital for a procedure soon. Our very own Sue Langley will also be going in to have a back operation in August so please please keep those prayers circulating for our loved ones. Jim Bankston was also with us and we were really glad to see him after his fall. Judy took great care of him and it shows. Our annual event is August 25th at Team Power Sports in Garner, NC from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Please come out and help us raise funds for the O Berry Center in Goldsboro. If you have any soaps, lotions, mouth wash, shower gel, gently worn clothes or shoes, please bring them to the event so we can get them to O Berry. We will be having our monthly meeting on the 16th of August so bring your items to either place and we will appreciate it. W.O.S. is just around the corner and so far we have 11 individuals signed up to attend and volunteer for our assignments during the rally. It s a Jungle out there so if your name is not on our list let me know soon before I send the list to Roy and Cindy. We will also be having our September meeting on the 20th. 3 Assistant Chapter Directors Davis & Barbara Bowen Dear Chapter Members, We received information from Pat Yates, Coordinator of the O Berry Neuro-Medical Treatment Center. They are already planning for Christmas Please bring any toiletries you have to the meeting as we are collecting them to take to the Center in December. They can use more than just money so anything you have such as wash cloths, lotions, shampoo, conditioners, mouth wash, etc., can be used. We are at the beach enjoying this great weather and will see you in August at our annual event and at our meeting. Our meeting is the 16 th of August and our event is the 25 th at TPS. Come out and have fun with us. Until next time. The Couple s Corner Since capturing the Couples Plaque in Sanford we have been on the go. We will see you at the Couples Retreat in Mebane. Being the couple for our chapter is funny to us. Don t get me wrong, it is still an honor but it feels like dejavu. Did we spell that correctly lol. Joy and Glenn are doing a FANTASTIC job motivating and encouraging our chapters to have a couple. It certainly helps you in making friends because a lot of your duties as couple include a lot of chapter interaction. 4 Rider Education Shirley and Tony Prewitt NC District Educators 10 Tips for Hot Weather Motorcycle Riding Posted on July 29, 2014 by lizjansen Posted in Motorcycle Tips 6 Comments By Liz Jansen With hot weather in full swing across most of Canada and the US, (although certainly not in my neighborhood) it seemed fitting to revisit this topic, pulled from the archives. Keep cool everyone! It happened to me and it can happen to you. Headache, nausea, confusion, disorientation and I was on a solo trip in a foreign country, thousands of miles from home. Exposure to direct sun, heat and the wind all increase the rate at which we lose water naturally through perspiration and breathing. 4

5 Rider Education And if, like those of us in northern climates, we re not acclimatized to the heat, it can affect us at even moderate heat temperatures. The onset of heat exhaustion can be insidious. A few easy proactive steps can help us stay well hydrated when riding in hot weather. 1. Wear light colored clothing including your helmet. 2. Layer your clothing so you can adjust as the temperature changes. Breathable layers are better than nothing at all even under your riding gear. 3. Drink plenty of fluids pure water is best. Start drinking well ahead of your ride the effects of dehydration are cumulative. I have started adding an electrolyte supplement in the form of an effervescent tabs 4. Avoid caffeine. Liquids with act as a diuretic and push water out of your system. If you must have a cup of caffeine, make sure you drink 8 ounces of water for every cup of coffee or soda that you drink. 5. Drink 1/2 ounce of water for every 1 pound that you weigh (as a rule of thumb, in a day). 6. Sip your water every 15 minutes or so, rather than drink more at longer intervals. 7. Install a cup-holder or use a hands-free Camelback. I strap mine around my tank bag rather than on my back and it works just fine. 8. Wear lightweight clothing that covers your skin. It minimizes the sun s drying and damaging effects. 9. Stop frequently to rest, stretch, move around, drink water and cool down. 10. Plan your day around the weather. Start riding earlier and avoid riding during peak heat times. 11. Signs of dehydration include: less frequent urination (urine passed will be less in volume and darker in color), fatigue, headache, dizziness and cramps. If you are not drinking water, it is hot and you are not sweating, be careful. This could be a sign that you are nearing heat stroke. 5

7 Wow Wingers, Where has the time gone? In 59 Days we ll be in beautiful Waynesville NC at our 35th, Wings over The Smokies! We re getting really excited, how about you? The District team has had our last planning meeting, we all know our duties Roy & Cindy are still brain storming to make sure FUN is had by all. Don t forget it s a jungle out there, your costume can take any direction with this theme. Classes are being lined out, so if you know of anyone who wants further education on riding & safety, Carol & Tom Scully are the go to people. Austin & I have kept the roads HOT in July, we visited most chapters in the East; we won the Eastern Travelers Plaque for Chapter Z, Rocky Mount. We made it to one of the chapters in the Central & one in the West. We re already working on Gifts on Cycles, which falls on Saturday, December 1st this year. Many chapters have already donated items, which we've delivered to the O Berry Center. The weather has been so wet, so the Four wheels have taken us far; tickets are selling good District News Austin & Peggy Gauthier NC ADD s East stubs & monies are being turned in for the Grand Prize drawing. Again, we hope the winner is present, that al- ways makes it so exciting to see the persons face when their ticket num- ber is called out. It s awesome too see North Carolina working togeth- er as a team; without each chapter pulling their weight this event could not be pulled off. Thanks Again, to Bobby Manning for such a great IDEA on selling chances on the Goldwing tickets that sure helps chapters move those tickets.thank you to ALL District, we all rock!! Sure hope registrations and res- ervations have been made; number count helps get vendors in. Things are going well in the East, many chapters are still having 40 to 55 people attending their gatherings. F2 Garner, is having an event on August 25th at Team Pow- er Sports in Garner. There event is a FundRaiser for the O Berry Cen- ter and will run from 11AM until 3PM Let s support them!
