2 President s message Hello from Marge Phillips, President of Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 260 My name is Marge Phillips and I am president of our chapter of Phi Kappa Phi. I am a Writing Associate in the Center for Writing Excellence. You may be wondering why I am writing this as president. Doris Dumey was president until November when she was offered a job in Kentucky and moved out of state. I will be helping out as president for the chapter as Pam, president-elect, is learning the president s job. We were busy in the fall of We had a short meeting in September and November. In October, we met and worked on our Born to Read literacy project. We labeled and inserted a letter in approximately 1500 Little Golden Books. These books will be delivered to both hospitals in Cape Girardeau and the hospital in Perryville. Every baby that is born in any of the three hospitals will receive one of the books. On September 17 and October 16, Phi Kappa Phi and Psi Chi volunteers picked up trash on Broadway. Several large bags of trash were collected. On December 1, Phi Kappa Phi and Psi Chi co-sponsored a game/movie night. Benefits of Phi Kappa Phi -- There are many benefits that Phi Kappa Phi provides for their members. There are also many, many awards and grants that Phi Kappa Phi provides (some information on awards/grants listed below). You may want to go to the national website to check out all the many benefits/ awards/ grants. The website is: Every active member of Phi Kappa Phi has access to all the information on the website. Fellowship Award The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi currently awards fifty-one Fellowships of $5,000 each and six at $15,000 each to members entering the first year of graduate or professional study. Each Phi Kappa Phi chapter may select one candidate from among its local applicants to compete for the Society-wide awards. 2

3 Literacy Grants The Literacy Grants program was initiated to mobilize members and resources of Phi Kappa Phi and the higher education community to champion literacy initiatives. Grants of up to $2,500 are available to Phi Kappa Phi chapters and individual members to fund ongoing literacy projects or to create new initiatives. The Society's commitment to the cause of literacy grows out of and is consistent with its mission, which was expanded to include "...and to engage the community of scholars in service to others." Application Deadline usually April 1. Love of Learning Awards Love of Learning Awards help fund post-baccalaureate studies and/or career development for active Phi Kappa Phi members to include (but not be limited to): Graduate or professional studies, doctoral dissertations, continuing education, career development, travel related to teaching/studies, etc. Study Abroad Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. 4 Sad News Twylla James In June 2017, Twylla James, long time member of our Phi Kappa Phi Chapter passed away unexpectedly. Twylla had a large impact on our chapter. She had so many wonderful ideas. Twylla was always coming up with a unique Homecoming parade idea for Phi Kappa Phi. She was so enthusiastic, and her enthusiasm spread to all who participated in the parade. Twylla also organized a toy drive for Phi Kappa Phi where several boxes of toys were collected. Twylla participated in all Phi Kappa Phi activities until she became sick with cancer. Even then, when she felt able to participate, she was there. She was dedicated and such a pleasure to work with. We will miss her. Toy Drive, PKP Event 4

5 Induction ceremony December 10 was our first ever fall induction ceremony where we welcomed 28 new members to our chapter (list of new members below). Dr. Vargas gave the welcome, congratulated students, and handed them their Phi Kappa Phi pins. On December 16, Phi Kappa Phi volunteers ushered at the morning and afternoon commencement ceremonies. 7 Study Abroad in Ecuador By Karley Smith I went to Ecuador for two weeks this winter for study abroad. I stayed with a host mother in Quito. I had a lot of fun, and I learned a lot! We went on a city tour, and I was able to see many sites in Quito. The equator was awesome, and we went to the monument and a museum. We went to Cotopaxi volcano. It is still active and is considered to be the second most dangerous volcano in the Andes Mountains. In Otavalo, we did a lot of shopping, as it is the largest outdoor market in South America. I was able to bargain a lot and get some good deals! We went to the Amazon Rainforest. There, I was spiritually cleansed by a shaman, who was a member of an indigenous Amazonian community. We went on a hike and got to swim by a waterfall! Also, in the Amazon, we were able to see monkeys in the wild; one came up and tried to steal our food at lunch! We did a lot of other things in and around Quito. It was a great trip, and I would definitely recommend study abroad to anyone. 7
