SPC Sport Report Term 2, Week 8 We are now in the final weeks of term two BAS sport with only one or two matches remaining for all sports. Across all sports we have had some fantastic results and our numbers have consistently been high. Some highlights over the past week include the BAS Badminton Championships, our Senior Soccer sides travelling to compete in a friendly against Geelong Grammar, our rugby sides continue to put winning results on the board and all our football teams lead their respective competitions the the 1 st XVIII grand final to be played on Wednesday June 20. On Tuesday, June 12, at 7:30pm in the Chapel there is an information night for the 2019 Ireland Tour. All current year 9, 10 and 11 students and parents are welcome to attend. BAS Badminton Championships Well done to Brock Reid, Marshall Gladman, Hugh Cooper and Jesmar Harris who represented SPC at the annual BAS Badminton championships. A successful and enjoyable day was had at the Ken Kay Badminton centre on Thursday May 24. Thank you to our HAPE Trainee Mitch Tuddenham who supervised the boys on the day. Rugby St. Patrick s College 1 st XV vs. Geelong Grammar (H) (26/05) Full time: 85 0 (HT 36-0) Try scorer/s: Chris Tuitea 4, Eddie Sauvao 2, Ethan Jessop 2, Koni Wolfgramm, Regan Champley, Tarquin Schreenan, Kayne Councillor, Josh Wilson-Stanton Conversion/s: Pou Siola a (10/13) 5 Koni Wolfgramm 4 Chris Tuitea 3 Pou Siola a 3 Regan Champley Any coach would be reticent to describe a game as the complete performance, however, on this occasion, this may well be most apt. Geelong are not the side they have been for the past couple of seasons, however always play with a heart and tenacity that is a credit to their rugby program. We have now had a run of home fixtures and have entertained the many spectators who have braved the varied Ballarat weather conditions. Following on from thirteen tries scored last week against Melbourne Grammar, a further thirteen tries were scored against Geelong, however, unlike last week, this week our ability with the ball was matched by our ability to regain the ball. I have written about our attitude to defence in a number of our match reports this season and it was once again our platform for success. Whilst the highlight reel of attacking play would be a spectacle to watch, the most gratifying element of the game for us came in stoppage time at the end of the game. With the result already a foregone conclusion at 85-0 the away side were awarded consecutive penalties to see them inches from our line. The opposition support were eager to see their team cross for a consolation score, but our SPC defence held resolute. This was a defining moment and heralded an affirmation of our commitment to defence. This will serve us well in closer contests. It is difficult to critique our attacking ability, not because it was perfect (reflected by the score), but because it was not tested. Tackles were broken regularly, space was found easily on the flanks, however credit must go to the manner in which the space was utilised, the support that each player worked hard to offer one another, and the ruthlessness shown in efficiently crossing the whitewash. Special mention must go to the go forward ball

created by Koni Wolfgramm, whose full game performance was outstanding. Koni was well supported by expert finishing from outside centre Chris Tuitea and a commanding game from Vice-Captain, Pou Siola a, who led the game from the early stages after his brother, our Captain, left the field with an injury. Haileybury await us at home this coming Saturday, before a break over the Queen s Birthday Weekend. As always we are indebted to many people, particularly members of our Parent Committee who again were wonderful hosts to both our players and our opposition. St. Patrick s College 2 st XV vs. Geelong Grammar (H) (26/05) Full time: (HT 5-7) Try scorer/s: Bayley Cocking, Sam Muller, Riley Madigan, Bryce Stevens Conversion/s: Jovesa Ravisa (2/4) 5 Bayley Cocking 4 Riley Madigan 3 Bobby Glanford 2 Jacob Michalik 1 Riley Williams Unfortunately, on account of injury and absence, Geelong Grammar s 2ndXV were unable to fulfil this competition fixture, so our 2s won through Forfeit. That said it is a mark of Geelong Grammar that those 2nds players, who were available, came across on Saturday to enable us to play an abridged 10 aside game. I must also acknowledge the selfless actions of Jacob Michalik who, without hesitation, volunteered to play for Geelong to ensure both sides had even numbers. Jacob would also go on to score one of Geelong s two tries, a wonderfully taken try. Our 2nds season has been disjointed, with games forfeited either by ourselves or our opponents, so the opportunity to play a game, albeit 10 aside, was a great chance for a group who have worked tirelessly in training, to get a hit out. The first half was a cagey affair, inevitably made so by both sides attempting to adapt to a different format and more space to both attack into and defend. Bayley Cocking continued his great season form with the first try of the game, an opportunistic break up the narrow side and a clear run to the line. Geelong though were able to hit back with a converted score to have a narrow advantage going into the halftime break. The players were reminded of playing on the front foot and to back themselves when the opportunity presented itself. The second half saw a dominant display by our SPC side and particularly from outside centre Riley Madigan who grew in stature as the game went on. The rugby was simple on the eye, but effective, proof that team work will always win over individual moments. We are very proud of what this group of senior players have achieved and continue to achieve. Huge game this coming Saturday against Melbourne High School s 1stXV. We look forward to the challenging contest. St. Patrick s College U15s vs. St Kevin s College U15s (A) (26/05) Full time: (HT 5-24) Try scorer/s: Owen Pearse (2), Adam Hollingworth, Xavier Hayter Conversion/s: Owen Pearse (2/4) The game on Saturday was a very close game, eager to beat St. Kevin s, everyone was excited to see who would come away with the win. As formidable an opponent as St. Kevin s are, we were enthusiastic to test ourselves up against them. A game of two halves, St Kevin s won the first half 24/5 and we won the second half 19/7. It was a near titanic comeback from the SPC U15s, which nearly resulted in a first ever win over St Kevin s. Praise must go to individuals within the team who played outstandingly and to the team for completing their core jobs well.

St. Patrick s College U14s vs. St Kevin s College U14s (A) (26/05) Full time: 5-38 (HT 0-19) Try scorer/s: Deegan Craig-Peters Conversion/s: Adam Griffith (0/1) The U14 game was a much better effort from the boys of St Patrick s College. For the first 10 minutes of the game there was no tries scored and both teams seemed to want the win. St Kevin s went in for an extremely well worked try and from there the boys seemed to almost lose hope and let two easy tries in. This left the half time score at The second half was a much better performance after we discussed how to beat this team in the half time team talk. The boys were eager to start the second half and none of the tries in this half were soft tries. Our tackling was good and has definitely improved over recent weeks. Deegan Craig-Peters scored a good try in the corner but that was all that St Kevin s let through. Following on from the U13 game there is a lot of things we need to work on and there is many hard hours of training that lies ahead of these boys. St. Patrick s College U13s vs. St Kevin s College U13s (A) (26/05) Full time: 5 50 (HT 0-22) Try scorer/s: Jayden Tonks Conversion/s: Adam Griffith (0/1) Our fixtures against St Kevin s were always going to be hard. The scores on the day from all three teams that went down to Melbourne prove that. The first half of the U13s game St Patrick s hardly had the ball and we found ourselves defending for most of this half. Defence is an attitude and from the sideline I did not see this attitude coming from the boys. The score line reflects this lack of attitude. The half time score was 22-0 to St Kevin s College. The second half had an amazing start with Jayden Tonks going in for our only try of the game but unfortunately, Adam Griffith did not convert the try. After that try the boys came back fighting but soon enough our opponents scored two quick tries and once again, the St Patrick s boys seemed to drop their heads and were just going through the motions. There are many things that we need to work on before the next game and we will be working hard once again on the attitude of the side to remain resilient, even when faced with such adversity. St. Patrick s College 1 st XV vs. Haileybury (H) (02/06) Full time: (HT 80-7) Try scorer/s: Ethan Jessop 4, Josh Wilson-Stanton 4, Eddie Sauvao 3, Chris Tuitea 3, Kayne Councillor 3, Mitch Hammond 2, Josh Cooper 2, Elijah Kelly 2, Koni Wolfgramm, Jayden Cooper, Pou Siola a, Tarquin Schreenan It is important to contextualise this game. Throughout the week it had appeared that this game would not happen. Schoolboy rugby in Victoria is cyclical at best, by which I mean that one year to the next the strength of a school side can be very varied. Last year Haileybury were able to field two senior sides and were competitive. This year, with their school APS football champions last year, they are having difficulty attracting new talent to their rugby program. Results for them this season have been one-sided in the opposition s favour and last week they valiantly fronted up against St Kevin s College. Ultimately, we played, and that is to the credit of their Head of Sport, their U16 coach (who travelled with their side for this game) and their thirteen players who did not stop

competing throughout the game. The second half was brought to a close early and we determined before the start to not take conversations, to keep both teams moving. When there is great difference between the two sides it can be hard for the stronger side to maintain structure as tackles are broken with greater ease then they would usually do. This sets up more broken field play, rather than sustained phase play, however, to our players credit they worked hard to sustain pressure and play from our platform. A reduced players game meant there were no loose forwards, which meant a reshuffle for a number our players into unusual positions. It also proved to be a game that we could utilise our wider squad before our 2s game against Melbourne High. Immediately after the game, as a coaching team, we decided not to award a 5-1 as we would usually do, because it would be both difficult and somewhat unfair given how the game unfolded. That said, I share with you the comments of their coach, which I believe best surmises today s game please pass on to your boys our thanks, your boys have been the best to our boys than any other team we have played this year. We absolutely respect them. (We absolutely respect Haileybury) Weekend off this coming weekend and then Trinity in Melbourne before the College holidays. St. Patrick s College 2 st XV vs. Melbourne High School (H) (02/06) Full time: (HT 0-5) Try scorer/s: Tarquin Schreenan, Jayden Cooper Conversion/s: Jovesa Ravisa (1/2) 5 Tarquin Schreenan 4 Jayden Cooper 3 Bryce Stevens 2 Luke Griffith 1 Tyrese Thompson/Jacob Michalik Unfortunately, the game was somewhat soured by the inferences of our opponent s support group, however we shall take nothing away from our senior group who fought so hard to come out on top of Melbourne High School s 1stXV. This was always going to be one of our hardest contests and so it proved. Melbourne High were aggressive and kept the ball well for large periods of the game. If stats (possession, etc.) could have been taken then they would surely have favoured our opponents, however what no stats could show is the heart and repeat efforts that our players showed for the full game. The first half was one-sided and our opponents scored first with some naïve defence allowing a strong run that ripped through the heart of our team and saw a try scored in the corner. The conversion was missed. The second half was full of niggle, which just epitomised the desire that all players showed, desperate for the win. Melbourne High scored first after a series of strong runs through the middle of our team, however again the conversion was missed. These misses would prove costly as the game started to swing in our favour as the game reached its climax. Our players started to show belief with their ball carries as Melbourne tired and tackles were missed. Tarquin had an outstanding game, and was our deserved first try scorer, and then Jayden Cooper continues to show his athleticism and power, since moving from football, to score our second try. Jovesa drop kicked Jayden s try and inspite of a couple of mistakes that gave our opponents territory and possession our 2nds held firm and captain, Bryce Stevens, was left to kick the ball to end a tense affair. It continues to be a remarkable sign of our development that we are able to field a 2ndXV and whilst our numbers will always be sought on a week by week basis, today, we can enjoy a significant victory. I offer my congratulations to all in our senior squad as this game was awarded our Performance of the Week. St. Patrick s College U15s vs. Melbourne Grammar School U15s (A) (02/06) Full time: (HT 7-5) Try scorer/s: Escher Eastcott 2, Quinn Bogers, Xavier Hayter, Owen Pearse Conversion/s: Owen Pearse (4/5)

It was a great performance by our SPC U15s against MGS with the first half being a close affair. Only a conversation separated the two teams at halftime. With defense dominating the first half, both teams were determined not to let the other get the upper hand. In the second half, our SPC U15s applied the pressure with great ball retention, strong running and excellent inter-passing between the forwards and backs. This allowed St Pats to finish the match strongly running in 4 tries to 1, capping off a good performance by our SPC U15s. St. Patrick s College U14s vs. Marcellin College U14s (A) (02/06) Full time: 45-7 (HT 21-0) Try scorer/s: Declan Dwyer Conversion/s: Adam Griffith (1/1) For a side that has an immense amount of talent this result was somewhat disappointing. With that being said for the first 10 minutes of the game, the score was 0-0 and I was happy with how the boys were both on attack and on defence. The boys let one try slip through and then, unfortunately, they all just dropped their heads and let in another two quick tries from a formidable Marcellin attack. This left the half time score, The second half started off really well with Declan Dwyer scoring an amazing 50m individual try. This got the boys going again and they were able to hold the Marcellin boys back for quite some time. They then tired from all the relentless defending and let through a final couple of tries. This team in particular has some good, talented players and what they need to do is believe in themselves and believe that they can come back from anything and finish on top. The things we are going to work on in practice for the next couple of weeks will definitely be one on one tackling and our defensive structure. The boys and all the coaching staff are both excited for our next home encounter against Trinity Grammar. St. Patrick s College U13s vs. Marcellin College U13s (A) (02/06) Full time: (HT 29-0) Try scorer/s: Jayden Tonks, Adam Griffith, Corey Rapa, Khy Jess Conversion/s: Adam Griffith (2/4) The U13 game was our second game away for the season. The boys went into the game with their heads held high and expecting a win. The very first Marcellin attack gave the St Patrick s boys a massive wakeup call when straight after kick off one of the opposition boys went under for a try. That was unfortunately only the beginning of an early onslaught as the St Patrick s defence was no match in the first half to Marcellin s attack as they ran through and scored four more tries, with St Patrick s not scoring at all. After our half time talk we went out all guns blazing and, after a wonderful individual try from Jayden Tonks, the SPC boys seemed to pick up their game a lot and got the will to fight back. The next three tries that followed after that were very pleasing. They were all well worked, team tries. As stated above the boys got their fight back and were back in the game. However, Marcellin answered back with a try and the boys went back into their previous defeatist mind set. We have a long weekend coming up which means we have two weeks to work on the issues, and by our next game the boys will be ready for the encounter against Trinity Grammar.

Soccer Seniors SPC vs GEELONG GRAMMAR The boys were suitably pleased with the surrounds of the pristine soccer ground at Geelong Grammar with views over Corio Bay and the impressive very English looking clock tower. We presented well but played in a nervous fashion with little control over the ball in the early part. We held solid at the back where Connor O Callaghan, Patrick McGodlrick and Ryan Andrew set up quite well, but we could not get passes onto our forwards and the turn overs eventually cost us. Grammar put two goals away from 25 metres one where our centre structure broke down and the second from a play where our keeper risked all on his attack. Our problem had been keeping possession and we planned on finding feet at the half time discussion. During the second half we outplayed Grammar with control of the ball through the centre of the pitch. Predominantly this came from a much more determined effort in the centre through Jude Jeandet and Mitch Ralston contesting and holding possession. They did score despite our defending man on man but the striker was simply too good when he got a view of the goals and shot a rocket from 25 metres. 3 goals down but we did not give the game away and St Pats fought back solidly with a number of dangerous attacks with Jyle Hamilton and Henry North both causing their backline concern. We had no bench but all players did their best in a determined second half effort. Jayden Ashmore gave a very solid performance in goals and his delivery out gave us control out of defense. Neil Nilwiset and Darby Gaffney became link men across the wings and drove us forward to advantage. Our best player over the whole of the match though was Kale Huggett who covered an enormous amount of the pitch defending as well as giving us drive off his side of the ground. Best: Kale HUGGETT, Jude JEANDET, Mitch RALSTON, Connor O CALLAGHAN, Darby GAFFNEY, Jayden ASHMORE Football Juniors SPC Green defeated Mt Clear College Best Players: Max Anderson, James Clark, Jesse Cairns, Sam Farrington, Angus Troup. Goal kickers: James Clark 4, Sam Quinn, Max Anderson, Austen Hare, Will Martin. The SPC Green team won the game with a strong team effort in perfect conditions against the competitive Mt Clear College team. The match opened with Mt Clear, via a long and direct

kick, allowed their forwards to snap the first goal for the match. Things got even better for them when more efficient ball use allowed easy shots for goal and resulted in minor scores. It was as if our team finally got the message as, with some excellent forward line pressure in James Clark taking a fine contested mark, resulting a goal for our team. In the second quarter, again led by James Clark and Max Anderson, SPC Green were starting to control the game with strong clearances, this lead to an abundance of scoring opportunities, kicking four goals to one at half time. With James Clark on the ball, with Ethan Horsburgh in the ruck, and Jesse Cairns in the centre were very busy around the ground created many opportunities for the forwards. Max Anderson in his first game and Will Martin ran hard at the ball and contributed strongly. Austen Hare and Ethan McKercher were now a focal point up forward. There were a number of outstanding performances from our defence team with Sam Farrington continuing his run of good form. Billy Hanrahan providing effort and leadership, Alex Hamilton and Angus Troup off the backline stood tall and worked hard to contain Mt Clear's forward shots at goal. Overall a hard fought game to win in the end. Regards Garry Fitzsimons 2 nd XVIII SPC Green Goals: S. Tipper 5, K.Swan, T. Thompson, J.Riding, M. Aikman Best: S. Tipper, J. Riding,. L. White, M. King defeated SPC Blue Goals: A. Azzopardi 2, A. Vallance, M. Eastman, X. Jenks, C. Parden, N. Henderson Best: L. Philips, R. Porter, J. Dickson SPC Green continued it's undefeated season beating SPC Blue in a close encounter by 9 points. SPC Blue started well and held a 7 point advantage at quarter time. Liam Phillips and Rylan Porter won plenty of the ball for SPC Blue and provided great run throughout the game. After quarter time SPC Green were able to win more of the ball around the contest through midfielders Jack Riding, Lou White and Max King which put pressure on the SPC Blue defence. SPC Green were well led up forward by Sam Tipper who kicked 5 goals in a dominant display. SPC Blue got within 3 points deep in the last quarter but were unable to hit the front despite several forward entries. SPC Green managed to repel SPC Blue in the dying stages and register a goal after the siren which extended the final margin to 9 points.

1 st XVIII SPC Defeated Ballarat Grammar Best Players: Jack Tillig, Adrian Lawrence, Tom Clark, Nick Stevens, Matty Lloyd, Josh Chatfield Goals SPC Blue: D. O Brien 4, K. Counsellor, A. Morrish, I. Grant, F. Marris 2, C. Craig- Peters, M. Lloyd 1 In the final round of the BAS 1 st XVIII competition SPC took on Ballarat Grammar away from home on a windy Wednesday afternoon. SPC won the toss and elected to kick with the wind in the first quarter and hoped to get off to a good start but innacturate kicking to begin with saw SPC only able to register 4 behinds before finally Dean O Brien kicked truly on his way to 3 first quarter goals. Even with the assistance of a strong breeze SPC only held a four goal buffer at the first change and was being put under some relentless pressure from the oppositon. Grammar had plenty of chances with the breeze in the 2 nd quarter but the backline trio of Lawrence, Tillig and Stevens played a big part in holding them to a goal repelling many advances. Jack Tillig was impressive off a back flank and gave plenty of drive as he used the ball well from defense. At half time there were some changes made with Tom Clark moving forward where he was able to work his opponent over and get used through the middle of the ground providing a link between defense and attack. Josh Chatfield was given a chance through the middle and had an immediate impact getting the first two clearances. At times the game was a tight tussle with both teams turning the ball over in tricky conditions but SPC were in control from the beginning. There were some great signs from players who haven t had a lot of 1 st XVIII experience this year which is promising considering the side is all but set heading into the BAS grand final in two weeks. Well done boys. Jarrett Giampaolo & Joseph Carmody 1 st XVIII Assistant Coaches
