Their combined years of service to Trinity Grammar School represents some 365 years. Their presence helps to remind us that we do in fact build on the foundations of those who precede us. We often talk about the spirit of community within our fine School. This is something that we both honour and value and it is something that we need to continue to nurture for the benefit of current and future generations. 2 ACADEMIC FOCUS Trinity Grammar School s Year 7 Field Studies Programme launches this week. It is therefore a pertinent time to discuss the academic rationale for such a programme. In the UK the importance of fieldwork in education is being celebrated with the Geographical Society s 2016 Year of Fieldwork. Similarly, academic institutions around the globe are developing online learning programmes and MOOCs (Massive Online Learning Courses) to deliver content to an audience of learners remotely. Trinity Grammar School s Blended Learning Model The delivery of Geography for Year 7 students at Trinity Grammar will utilise a blended learning model which includes a field work immersion and an online course which have both been designed to produce a rich learning experience. Blended learning utilises a range of delivery methods that take advantage of the educational power of new information technologies. The programme draws on the powerful Canvas student learning platform to guide students through four learning modules in order to develop a sound understanding of the conceptual framework that underpins the Year 8 Geography curriculum. The guided, yet self-organized, nature of the online modules will help students to develop vital habits for lifelong learning. This is also supported with a traditional face to face classroom teacher who instructs and supervises students on their learning journey. However, the jewel of the blended learning model is the week long Field Studies Programme which will be delivered at a range of purposefully selected sites around Sydney in The Geography Programme will allow our boys to explore Geographical themes and concepts in a real-world environment and allow them to make deep and meaningful connections between their conceptual knowledge and the practical fieldwork enquiry. Patrick has kindly donated a copy of his book to the Library. We are all looking forward to reading it! ACADEMIC INTEGRITY This term, Year 7 students have been learning about academic integrity in Library sessions during House period. Academic integrity is a kind of moral code, which expects a student to be honest and responsible when using the ideas of others to create new information. Trinity Grammar students are expected to ensure that all work they submit is their own by acknowledging all material used. To this end, Year 7 students have been made aware of helpful online tools and programs such as RefMe and Turnitin. The sessions also highlighted another side of this moral code - that conducting oneself with integrity throughout one s studies is simply the right thing to do. HOLIDAY OPENING HOURS The Arthur Holt Library will be open to Years 11 and 12 students during this holiday period, between 10am and 4pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays (all three weeks). 4 SOCIETY OF THE ARTS During the holidays, Delmar Gallery s exhibition programme continues with our next exhibition opening on Sunday 3 July, 2-4pm (note that there has been a change to the date listed in the Record Book, due to the clash with the federal election). The Air is Free: James Fardoulys & Dean Manning will be launched by Assistant Director of Artbank, Daniel Mudie Cunningham at 2.30pm. Sourced from collections across the east coast, this is the first substantial exhibition in Sydney in decades of one of Australia s best naïve painters, James Fardoulys ( ). Fardoulys fantastically idiosyncratic paintings of Australiana will be set in dialogue with new works developed in Athens by an artist sharing his Greek heritage, Dean Manning. James Fardoulys arrived in Australia from Kythera, Greece in 1914, and criss-crossed outback Queensland and NSW with his ventriloquist wife and vaudeville troupe in the 1920s. Taking up painting after he retired from taxi driving in 1960, on a South Brisbane verandah he conjured Australian outback and colonial scenes. He mixed memories with whimsy, history with fantasy, and quickly established himself as one of Australia s foremost naïve painters In a kitchen in Athens in 2016, Dean Manning (1964-) mixed traditional Greek pigments to etch out fragments of Athenian life: portraits of rembetiko singers from the 1920s, graffiti and street protests, smoke and conversation in cafes, refugees arriving in Onassis port, Ariadne s thread and the Minotaur. His paintings and video animation find their way beneath the surface of his father s homeland. Like Fardoulys, Manning is part of the Greek diaspora and a self-taught painter, arriving at painting through his music (by way of album covers for his bands Leonardo s Bride and Holidays on Ice). The Air is Free brings together Manning s imagined Greece with Fardoulys imagined Australia. The Greek theme will be carried through the opening with live rembetika music performed on lute and guitar from 2pm 2.30pm, and delicious Greek cuisine. Dean Manning s works are for sale, price list available on request delmargallery@trinity. nsw.edu.au The exhibition continues to 31 July (Wednesday Sunday 12-5pm). images James Fardoulys, Douly on the Muster Dean Manning, Trio 2016 DIARY DATE Ricardo Gallén En route to perform with the Adelaide Symphony at the Adelaide Guitar Festival, Spanish maestro Ricardo Gallén will be giving an exclusive recital in Sydney here at Trinity! 6 RUGBY Statistically, the 2016 CAS results, by and large, have revealed that the win/loss ratios have closed significantly compared to the results this time last year. When looked at in conjunction with the depth in numbers in the U13s, U14s, U15s and Opens; the preseason preparation, including the explicit coaching of collision management, the picture emerges of a sport building on the foundations of the year before. The improved competitiveness across the grades is indicative of the values adopted by our players in terms of their attendance at training, their concurrent individual and unit skill improvement, and confidence in contact. The sustained player depth in the U13s is another illustration of the growing interest in Rugby in the younger years. More importantly, it also indicates the number of boys playing Rugby due to enjoyment, not only for promotional reasons. However, the difference in one year is significant when looking ahead to the 2017 season. Boys who started off playing and remained in lower teams, could very well see themselves playing in the higher grades the following year. Not only do we see the difference over a season, but the players also learn to persevere, especially if they have ambitions for higher teams in years to come. Nothing is off limits, except submitting too easily. Michael Thomas (12Hi) preparing to receive a pass from Michael Pahos (12Hi) in their 4thXV match. The recent CAS/GPS games saw the GPS team win 1st XV encounter, but not without a significant fight from the CAS players. Whilst in the 2nd XV match the CAS team emerged victorious. Like the Northern/Southern hemisphere divide, the gap is getting close between CAS and GPS. What used to be a significant gap has now lessened due to the improving standard of schoolboy rugby in CAS schools. 1STS The ideal situation to emerge from a game of rugby is for both teams to be competitive from the start with the desire and intention to win. Neither Trinity nor Barker disappointed in this regard. From the kick-off both teams displayed their intended approach to the game with the aim of using space on the periphery of the field after allowing the forwards to set the foundation first. Both sides adopted a similar style, but Trinity s ability to sustain pressure with ball-in-hand translated into a control of field position. While Barker was able to absorb the pressure and reply in kind, the Trinity First XV was able to generate and maintain longer periods of momentum that eventually produced dividends. 7 The mantra that Defence wins Games was on perennial display throughout the game. The players of both teams were accurate in their one-on-one tackles and competition for the ball on the ground was ferocious. However, the Trinity forwards avoided overcommitting at the breakdown, allowing the backs some convincing attacking opportunities in the space created by the disciplined breakdown management. In games between teams that are this close, discipline is, without doubt, a crucial element. The players from both sides demonstrated their universal awareness of their respective game plans and how they were to be achieved. The Greens, through a holistic combination of aggression and disciplined play, were able to seal the victory and maintain their standing on the CAS ladder in a very competitive season. 16BS It was a hard fought 7-3 win against Barker on Saturday with a wet ball after early rain making handling difficult. Barker attacked for most of the first half and the boys worked hard in defence. It was an achievement to have the score still 0-0 at half time. With points hard to come by, Barker took the opportunity to take 3 points early in the second half, putting the pressure on Trinity. As our kicking improved there were more chances to attack the line. The boys steadied and completed a number of phases ending with Wilbur Tsang (10Sc) going over for a classic forwards try under the posts. After defending in our own 22 for the last 5 minutes (a very stressful time for the coaches!) the boys are to be congratulated on their first win of the season! Liam Rasch (12WJ) dominates the front of the lineout while Cooper Chambers (11WJ) waits for delivery of the ball. 14AS The 14As provided another stoic team effort, to overpower a determined and much improved Barker team, resulting in a 27points to 0 victory. Having enjoyed the majority of possession in the opening stanza without reward, the team demonstrated a measured and patient approach to their rugby, with Ky Willoughby (8WH) and Reilly Large (9Hi) steering the team around. Jack Bermingham (9Mu) and Malachi Hawkes (8WJ) provided a great platform throughout the game, with the latter being heavily targeted after his dominant performance in Round 1. Despite the majority of possession and field position, the Trinity side found the Barker loose forwards a handful with a number of crucial turnovers when in point scoring positions. Outstanding tries and overall performances from Michael Eid (8Ke) and Jordan Maze (9Hi), alongside a relentless and powerful defensive display from every player, counter- balanced the number of turnovers, to ensure the game was never in doubt. With plenty to work on leading into the Newington game and the back half of the CAS rounds, the team appears determined and excited about the opportunities that are still to come and the improvements that can be made. With greater focus on being harder at the ruck contest, working as a unit, and utilising attacking space at the optimal time, their best performance is just around the corner. Ryan Longville (12Mu) makes a break closely supported by Nicholas Driessen (11Yo) and Matthew Doyle (11Hi). The First XV enjoying recognition from the School after the win. 13AS The 13As were relentless in controlling possession for long periods of the match against a gallant Barker team and finished victorious 62 points to 7. The performance was almost blemish free from a ball handling viewpoint and featured a thorough commitment to support efforts at the tackle contest. The quality of the breakdown work led to a quick speed of possession which, combined with direct and determined ball carries, posed a constant threat to the opposition. Tyson Jackson (7Fo), Bertie Alcock (7WJ), Jacob Stark (7Fo) and Daniel Morris (7St) were the standouts in an abrasive and tireless forward pack. Thomas Buvac (7WJ), Turoa Williams (8WH) and Theo Kidd (7WJ) were sparkling in a dominant backline. Cooper Chambers (11WJ) ready to deploy from the base of the scrum to an expectant Lachlan Ilias (10Sc). Head Master s Bulletin 24 June 2016 < 7

The aspect that is most pleasing though, continues to be the effort in defence. The team displayed a commitment to optimising its defensive shape and line speed again in this match. When all players plug into the line, communicate, push up and string up, it presents real challenges for the opposition. This, and the speed and quality of ruck support efforts should continue to be the primary technical focus of the boys as they look to the local derby against Newington. 13CS Trinity started the game well, turning consistent pressure into a strong forward s try from Ahmad Hijazi (7We). Trinity were dominant at the breakdown, led heroically by captain William Kirkham (8Ke). The Bottle Greens were able to make the most of the ball they secured with a great solo try to Stephen Roberts (8St) late in the second half. Trinity went into the break leading by 3 points, thanks largely to the inspirational defence of Evan Williams (8We). It was the first time the 13Cs had led their opposition all season and Jonathan Fouad (7WJ) extended the gap, barging over for a try early in the second half. Barker replied with 5 points of their own, before Theo Fatseas (7Du) crossed to put Trinity 10 in front. With minutes remaining, Barker made it a 3-point ball game and then, with seconds left, they broke through the Trinity defence, almost running the length of the field, only to be stopped short by a brilliant cover tackle from Thomas Foung (8Sc). It was a fantastic team effort that saw the boys come away victorious, 4 tries to 3. FOOTBALL FOOTBALL vs BARKER COLLEGE Trinity commenced the second half of the CAS season against traditional football rivals Barker College with improvement on their minds. The boys from the North Shore took the honours in Round 1 as Trinity only secured seven victories over the 29 contested matches back on May 7th. In the Opens group played at Rosewood that day we failed to win any of the seven matches and only took a point in one. This time, Trinity won 15 matches to Barker s 12, a huge improvement, to take the honours and the major turnaround was in the Opens division where the Green and Whites won six matches, all the ones contested on TGS 2, only dropping the 7ths match at Flockhart Park. Coincidentally, five of the six wins were by the score line of 2-1, with the 4th XI being more decisive in maintaining a clean sheet in the 2-0 victory. Other teams to win on Saturday were the 10Bs, 10Ds, and 10Fs, the 9As (who won 3-0, with No. 11 Sam York (9Hi) scoring a brace). Also victorious were the 9Bs and 9Ds, both coached by 2015 Old Boys Zac Galluzzo and Peter Tsaridis. The 8Cs and 8Es also won, as well as the 7Cs (who are coached by a 2015 old boy and First XI team member, Chris Hart). 1ST XI vs BARKER - WON 2-1 The June long weekend of no Trinity sport gave the 1st XI two weeks of invaluable lead-in time to prepare against Barker. With a plan in hand, the team looked to avenge its first round defeat to Barker and to continue the good form that had been displayed on the training ground. Trinity controlled possession in the wet conditions however it was Barker that was able to score first off a corner. It was very pleasing to see Trinity respond shortly after via a free kick. The William Piras (12Sc) free kick found William Todd (11Ar) who was able to skim the ball on with his head into the back of the net. 9 Ten minutes into the second half, Dimitri Valiotis (12Hi) was able to break the deadlock by intercepting a Barker pass, dribbled a little to get balanced and then launched a boot to net missile from 40 yards. The defence system of the Barker Goal Keeper had little chance as Trinity went 2-1 up and the crowd went wild. Trinity were able to lock out Barker for the remainder of the game and secure a character-revealing victory. Other notable performances are worth mentioning. Goal Keeper Joshua Hobden (11We) in his debut CAS game, made several importance saves off long-range shots. Winger Nicholas Chan (12Mu) after playing 2nd XI, came on early due to a teammate injury and worked hard for the team and created several chances. Fullback James Saab (12We) won important tackles and played well-timed passes down the line for winger Harry Page (12Yo), who was dynamic on and off the ball. William Todd (11Ar) returned from injury with composure to partner with Jordan Kery (11WJ) and lock up the defence. Luke Gray 1st Coach Noah Sinozic (7Ar) on the ball for the 7E team Felix Kerameas (11Fo) 2nd XI 18th June ND XI vs BARKER WON 2-1 Trinity were very keen to exact revenge upon Barker after a narrow 0-1 loss in the corresponding clash in Round 1. From the opening whistle, Trinity s pres strong start was rewarded with a fine team goal as Soroush Zand (12Ar) played a delightfully weighted 20 metre pass out to Reece Sekulovski (12La) who finished the goal off with aplomb, cheekily chipping the oncoming Barker Goal Keeper. Trinity maintained their advantage to the break with fine ball movement and keeper Gabriel Sikh (12We) was barely pushed due to the solid defence line in front of him, well-marshalled by the impressive Ryan Maranik (11Ar), who had his strongest game of the season thus far. The second stanza saw Barker impose some more authority on the match as they pushed for an equaliser and Trinity were unlucky to concede a penalty, when a wayward arm came in contact with the ball. Barker s spot kick taker duly converted and we were locked at 1-1 with 20 minutes to go. Rather than let this disappointment deflate them, Trinity re-asserted dominance and with 5 minutes remaining Felix Kerameas (11Fo) cut in from the left wing to midfield and from 25 metres unleashed a right to left shot which nestled neatly into the Barker net to see Trinity regain the lead. They held on to this advantage and recorded a fine win to improve their chances in the competition as they leapfrogged Barker on the table. The two teams ahead of them also lost on the weekend to aid their cause further. Chris Robinson 2nd XI Coach 3RDS vs BARKER WON 2-1 What a start to this game! Possibly the fastest goal of the year by Adrian Musumeci (11La) in the 24th second of the game off a Samuel Otton (11Ta) cross. The second half the 3rds again scored quickly in the first minute through a goal by Ollie Davis (11Ke) in his first game for the team. Unfortunately, a minute later a misdirected pass just outside the penalty box provided Barker the opportunity to make the score 2-1. The remainder of the game was intense defence and many missed opportunities in attack, but nevertheless an improvement on our 0-0 stalemate in the season s opener. Mark Mikulandra 3rd XI Coach 4THS vs BARKER WON 2-0 The last time these two teams met, a mere six weeks earlier, Barker had dominated and walked away with a score of 5 goals to 1. This hard-fought game, one in which Trinity demonstrated of what they are capable, provided evidence of how far the 4ths have progressed in such a short time. The first half was Jonathan Twomey (11Ho) 6th XI (Photo Courtesy of Belinda Herro) Head Master s Bulletin 24 June 2016 < 9

very even, and Barker were unlucky not to go one goal up, when the ball hit the inside of Trinity s goal post and then bounced back out rather than in. Just before half time Siddh Rawal (11Mu), who was playing a fantastic game in goal, was accidently struck in the mouth and had to go off. David Lambropoulos (11Hi) did a fine job replacing him. But it was in the second half that Trinity really began to play well. The defence, under the able direction of Edison Chan (11WJ) and wonderfully supported by Kevin Woo (11Mu), absorbed anything and everything that Barker threw at them and then countered with two marvellous goals. The first was a wonderful finish by Yanni Flaskos (11Du) from a terrific Anthony Nguyen (11WJ) cross. The second was an opportunistic long ball from Peter Kostoglou (11Sc) which caught the Barker keeper well off his line. Terry Haywood 4th XI Coach 5THS vs BARKER WON 2-1 The mighty 5th XI went into the game last weekend expecting to lose convincingly against what appeared to be a much stronger side. With our coach, Mr Parry overseas and the ground still wet from rain the night before, our boys knew that this game was going to be very challenging. Luckily for us, our replacement coach was the one, the only, Mr Haywood! The game started off very well with Trinity scoring not long after the first whistle. Edward Khoury (11He) has finally broken the curse that has been stopping most (if not all) of his shots from reaching the back of the net earlier this season. Barker fought back strongly at the beginning of the second half and scored an equaliser early on. The rest of the game was neck and neck with each team time after time just missing its chance at a winning goal. Edward Khoury once again found himself in front of the goal with the ball at his feet and iced the match. In the end Trinity won 2-1 in a very exciting game of football. Special mention must got to the whole back line for shutting down attack after attack made by the Barker opposition and to Mr Haywood for his help in securing us this victory it was as if he were a Puppeteer controlling us from above! Patrick Barlow (12Ar) 6THS vs BARKER WON 2-1 A solid win bouncing off the first loss against Barker some weeks back. Trinity went down early, but some midfield changes sparked the fire. A nice through ball set up Noah Thomas (12He) for the first and the start of the comeback. Shortly after halftime, Thomas got in 1 on 1 with the keeper and buried it home from outside the 18. Trinity then dug deep. A fine win with great resilience. The season s themes continue strongly. Jean-Paul El-Tom 6th XI Coach 7THS vs BARKER LOST 0-4 Having already opposed the Barker previously, Trinity s 7ths knew that this match would be extremely difficult. However, the positive mindset of the team was consistently evident through the pre-game preparation and warm-up. As the game commenced, both teams were battling for the ball and it seemed quite even, until a lapse in the defensive third allowed the Barker striker to put them in the lead. From this, I believe the mentality and confidence of the team dropped slightly, which led to conceding another two goals by the end of the first half. During the half-time break, the team was able to share their thoughts of what was being done well and what needed improvement. By giving each individual player this opportunity to share, it encouraged team cohesion and consistent feedback for one another. Even though Trinity couldn t strike back and come away with a victory, there were many positives to take out of the game as the boys are progressing each week individually, as well as a team. James Biviano 7th XI Coach CAS CATCH UP GAME: 1ST XI vs CRANBROOK WON 3-1 The 1st XI were looking to achieve six points in five days as they played Cranbrook in a mid-week CAS catch up game following the washout on 4th June. In the first twenty minutes, Trinity were brilliant with the way they weighted their passes, the angles they created off the ball and the passing combinations they created. Players heavily involved in this were William Piras (12Sc), William Monaha (12Mu), Julian Dimas (12Ta) and Dimitri Valiotis (12Hi). Trinity s first goal started from a Cranbrook long ball that centre back Jordan Kery (11WJ) intercepted and first time, headed to William Piras (12Sc). Harry Page (12Yo) received a pass in a wide position from Piras. He dribbled inside a little before linking up with William Monaha. The killer pass was deployed by Monaha for Valiotis, who faked a shot in a one on one with the Goal Keeper, beat him and then slotted away the first goal. For the second goal, Trinity had a free kick on the edge of the box. Valiotis stepped up to the plate and nailed it top corner for his second goal of the game and third in five days. Cranbrook were able to claw back a goal through a free kick of their own, but the game was put to bed in the second half when Trinity scored its third goal from a free kick. William Piras delivered the free kick to James Saab (12We) to head in the third goal. Well done to William Todd (11Ar), who followed up the shot in the event of a fumble! This lay testament to the superior drainage capabilities of the courts at the Trinity Tennis Centre. On arrival at the Trinity Tennis Centre at 6.30am on Saturday morning I was as surprised as anyone to see the courts in a playable state. The first match to get underway was the 1st IV who were looking to convert maximum points against a younger, new-look Barker outfit who had travelled down from the North Shore. Academically this was going to be a more difficult task than usual on account of James Artemi (11Hi) being sidelined due to injury. A replacement was sought and to his credit the Captain of Tennis (Kevin Batliwala 12Ho) pushed forward Brendan Sleiman (11Ta) ahead of himself to fill the gap. Brendon immediately stepped up, combining admirably with Dario Kmet (11Ke) as the number one doubles pairing to win two extremely tight sets 7-5, 6-4. Brendan was the perfect exemplar of resilience, refusing to accept defeat all the while tutoring his younger team mate in the finer details of doubles team work. On the adjacent court the 2nd pairing seemed more concerned about their hair getting wet than playing tennis and this was reflected in the closer than usual 6-4, 6-3 score line. To their credit, both boys lifted significantly in the singles component of the encounter with Matthew Nedanovski (9Fo) overcoming injury concerns to complete the fixture. In a strange twist of fate due to logistics, Brendan was called upon to play the number two singles and once again stepped up to the mark beating his Barker opponent 6-3 in the singles encounter of the day. The remainder of the singles matches were fairly pedestrian with the Trinity students winning comfortably, only conceding 1 game in the final 3 sets. On reflection of the score sheet, it is once again obvious that the Doubles component of our game requires wholesale improvement moving forward. All team members will benefit from moving forward in attack whilst adopting a less passive net game in future encounters. The 8 sets to love victory has pushed us to one point shy of Knox at the top of the competition and has kept us in the hunt to retain the Winter CAS Tennis trophy. In other news both Dario Kmet and James McCabe (8St) should be commended for their excellent results at the Gold tournament held in Wollongong over the recent Queen s birthday weekend. Both Trinity students fought off a large draw to win the 14 years and 12 years singles draws respectively. Well done boys! Jeremy Dykgraaff MIC Tennis Head Master s Bulletin 24 June 2016 < 11

YEAR 9As AND 9Bs The 9As from Barker disappointingly only had three players turn up, so some of our players had to miss out on their games. Despite this, Jason Wu (9Ho) and Alex Valiozis (9Yo) trounced their opposition 6-0 in the first doubles with a consistent display of solid ground strokes and strong serving. Because Barker was missing a player, Jonathan Karagiannis (9Hi) and Justin Slieman (9Ta) disappointingly could not play their doubles. To start the singles off Alex had to face up against a very strong opponent in the first singles and was unlucky to go down 2-6. Jason totally out-classed his opponent in his singles winning 6-0, where he was too strong right across the court with big serves, strong ground strokes and great volleying. Justin played well again in his singles to keep up his unbeaten record at number four, winning 6-1 in a hard-fought contest winning the important points well. Jonathon also played the same opponent in a makeup set as Barker s number three didn t turn up. As usual, Jonathon showed his good tennis skills in beating his opponent, great one handed back hands and some great down the line forehands. Final score was 5 sets to, 32 games to 7. The 9Bs made a great return to form with another crushing win over Barker. With Aiden Tharmarajah (9Ta) not able to play, Dom Lay (9St) stepped up again to the Bs pairing up with Arthur Wang (9Du) to win their set convincingly 6-0, Lachlan Slieman (9Ta) and Jack Opperman (9WH) followed up with another easy 6-0 win. Lachlan continued his good form into the singles with a strong 6-3 win against a good opponent. Jack came out firing, throwing down some very big serves and making some great volleys to outclass his opponent 6-1. After a slow start Arthur was down 4-3 but lifted his game, ending up with well-deserved 6-4 win. Dom stepped up from the Cs and showed what a good player he is by totally out classing his opponent with his strong serve and powerful ground strokes winning 6-2. Final score 6 sets to 0, 36 games to 10. Michael Leadbeatter 9As and 9Bs Coach 9Cs AND 9Ds The 9C/D squad played Barker College and achieved outstanding victories. Ably led by our captain, James Bednaic (9WJ) the 9Cs team displayed excellent tennis and very fine sportsmanship in defeating their opponents 5 sets to 1. Ben Butler (9Mu) played his best match of the season as the C1 seed, displaying skills that will soon see him challenging for a position in the A/Bs squad. William Wu (9Ta) also played a number of freakish shots in disposing of his opponent 6-0. The 9Ds, who were missing a number of players, fought hard for every point against a determined Barker team. Kenny Vu (9La) and Joshua Kolesnikoff (9Ho) were brilliant in their matches, while Isaiah Tambyrajah (9Yo) and Vir Suri (9Yo), who were called up from the colours squad, also played particularly well to help the team secure an important victory. Brett Lammiman 9Cs and 9Ds Coach VOLLEYBALL TRINITY DEFEATED BARKER 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-11) Round seven of the 2016 Winter Volleyball competition saw the 1st VI up against our arch rivals, Barker. Barker got off to a good start in the first set, however, consistent setting by Ben Wheen(11Fo) and Daniel Gabriel(11Hi) ensured that Trinity came back strongly to take out the set The second set started in similar fashion until Angus Webster (12Wj) and Peter Braga (11) started to dominate at the net in attack making life very difficult for the Barker blocking combination. Good defensive play from our back court specialist, Jarred Attia(11Yo) ensured that Trinity take out the second set In the third and final set, Trinity dominated in all aspects of the game taking out the set and the match 3-0. Overall it was a dominant performance by the 1st VI. It is very important now that we don t become complacent and continue to work hard at training to keep improving each week Lewis Jupp(12WH) 1st VI Captain TRINITY DEFEATED BARKER 3-1 (19-25, 26-24, 25-21, 25-19) In the last game for the term, the boys ended this term on a high note playing an excellent game. As some members of the team start playing their last games for the green and white, these home games are being played with more determination and effort than ever. Unfortunately, in true Trinity style, the boys dropped the first set and made a decision to start playing properly from that point. The second set started shakily but the boys found their feet quickly to even out the set and take the lead. Special mention to Philip Davies (12Ke) and Kristof Bryndum (11Sc) for building their confidence to take swings, securing us the set. The third started off with the team securing the first 10 points consecutively, however barker fought back, until Trinity lifted their defensive game and won the set. In the last set, with spirits running high, the boys played some excellent all-round volleyball with Jonah Newman (11WJ) and Matthew West (12Du) putting ther bodies on the line with brilliant serving from Elliot Kern (10WJ) the boys secured the set and the match! The team is now focusing their efforts towards their much anticipated game against Newington for the A.J Rae Shield. Josh Gereis (12Ar) 2nd VI Captain TRINITY DEFEATED BARKER 2-1 (12-21, 21-14, 21-10) Our Barker game last Saturday saw some very good all-round volleyball being played. We went into the game cautious yet optimistic. While reasonably confident, we knew Barker was a strong team and we would have to work hard. We began the first set slowly, losing multiple points through poor defence in both the front and back court. Barker was stronger on offence than we expected, with some amazing serves and well placed spikes. We began to adjust to their play late in the set, though it was too late. We dropped the first set 12 points to 21. We were warm going into the second set, and played smart. Powerful jump serves and spikes from Ken Zhang (11We) helped us keep our momentum, and good cover in back court from Elliott Lamond (11WJ) made our defence a lot harder to penetrate. We won the second set 21 points to 14. We had lots of momentum going into the third set, and through determination and teamwork we came away with a win, 21 points to 10. Barker was a strong and courteous opponent, and we enjoyed playing against them. We played as a true team, in what I believe to be one of our best games yet. 13 AFL When AFL first came to Trinity, there were some key questions asked of me in the inaugural season. One that sticks in my mind was from a rather nervous-looking Year 7 player who saw the storm clouds rolling in over our training. He turned to me and asked Sir, in AFL, what happens when it rains?. To which I replied laconically Well son, you get wet. After considerable eye-rolling, the Year 7 student tried again. Sir, but what happens if it really rains?. To which I felt compelled to answer Oh I see when that happens, you get really wet. That Year 7 student was hoping I would say that AFL gets called off in the wet and no doubt so too were many of my First XVIII players as they greeted me in the car park outside the SCG this Saturday, as the heavens opened on Bus Loop oval. As I look back on that first year and that innocent question from the Year 7 boy and my seemingly hilarious answer, I realise of course that I was wrong. You don t just get really wet. You learn. You learn a lesson that cannot be taught on the training ground. It must be learnt in the exact setting we found ourselves in this weekend. A soggy, boggy, windy, rainy Saturday morning wet weather footy! You learn that in conditions like this the only way to stay warm is to run, and to keep running. When you do this as a survival mechanism you begin to see the advantage of keeping on the move, how it allows you a step or two on your defender when the ball spills your way. How it wears down your opposite number to constantly chase you from contested possession to contested possession. You learn that whilst it earns Oohs and aaghs from the crowd when you can scoop the ball up in one hand and snap a goal across your body in the dry, it is far more admirable to put your head over the ball, dig it out of the mud, ride a bump and desperately stick your boot to ball to keep it moving forward in the wet. When you realise this you start to appreciate those players who perform this thankless task week in,week out. You learn that one goal really has the value of three in the wet, so you start to value each and every goal as if it were three and you get around your teammates when they manage to slide one through. You learn that you are never out of the contest, because the kick that seems to be sailing into the safe arms of the opposition could slip out like a cake of soap and so you never give up, no matter how much of an advantage he seems to have. You learn that the really good players look even better in the wet. They are cleaner with their hands, they watch the ball right onto their foot and they make the most of every opportunity. You learn that wet weather footy is pure footy and if you can apply these wet weather lessons to a bright winter day with the sun shining, then maybe you have learnt a lot more. Waverley certainly taught us a great deal on the weekend. If we did more than just get really wet on the weekend, if we learnt to never stop running, learnt to put our body on the line, learnt to support our mates who finish our good work with a goal, learnt to never give up, then wet weather footy will be the standard by which we play in the dry. And we will win more than we lose. Head Master s Bulletin 24 June 2016 < 13

I was proud of our effort this weekend. Proud that we never dropped our heads or pointed fingers. We showed character and determination. But now we need to show the characteristic that every great team has shown over the decades. The ability to learn from the best, so that we can beat the best. Chris Barnes MIC YEAR 7 AND 8 The Year 7 and 8 AFL team played Cranbrook for the first time this season. All the boys were raring to go after the three week break with the Queen s Birthday Holiday and a few wash out games. Trinity came out firing from the first bounce with Jack Nichol (8He) dominating the rucking contests, this made it possible for our mid fielders Nick Nikiforidis (8St), Blake Toohey (8Ke) and Finn Murphy (8Ta) to gain early possession. The game could have been taken away from Cranbrook in the first quarter as Trinity struggled with accuracy on goal, scoring 3 goals and 5 behinds. Our defence was strong with Luke Nichol (8He), Christopher Stelzer (8St), Gabriel Willis (7Ho) and Jack Braga (7Du) all making it very difficult for the opposition to score. Out of nowhere Jonathan Titmarsh (8Du) arguably took one of the best schoolboy marks ever seen, fully extended above the Cranbrook full forward, it was better than a Buddy Franklin special!. For three quarters our defence was extremely disciplined, Captain Matthew Uglow (8He) led by example, stopping the Cranbrook forwards from scoring and countering with attacking plays through Alister Buchanan (8Ta) and James Park (8Yo) on the wings. Nicholas Enno (7Hi) didn t stop running all game and contributed to a number of goal assists. The dry conditions enabled our big men to contest the high balls with Sebastien Buchanan (8Sc) capitalising scoring two goals. Addition goal scorers Aidan Murphy (7Du), Matthew Robertson (7Du), Nick Nikiforidis, Jack Nichol Jasper McCullagh (7We), Nicholas Enno (7Hi) and Anton Demark (8Sc) all kicked a goal apiece. In the end Trinity played consistently throughout the four quarters--a great team effort running out convincing winners 59 points to Cranbrook 29 points. 15 CROSS COUNTRY THE TRINITY RELAYS 18/6/2016, Ewen Park, Hurlstone Park The 19th Trinity Relays looked to be in considerable doubt with some last minute jitters at the hands of the newly amalgamated Canterbury Bankstown Council last Saturday. However, with some fine diplomacy from Mr Engele, we were once again on home turf to host our CAS and GPS running brothers. The weather also threatened and woke me early on Saturday morning, causing some anxiousness at chez Spratt. Thankfully though, the early showers cleared and competition commenced sharply at 9am. The mass start of 125 runners contributes greatly to the atmosphere at the relays, with the little blokes running with their older schoolboy role models, Old boy Heroes and a few crusty old staff members! Much fun! The Trinity Old Boy team there were two, in fact, (may even be more next year) were led out on the first lap by Mathew Crowhurst (14/12Ho) as he clung to another speedy old boy Aidan Dawson (14/12Du). Aidan effected the change with the hand touch to Lachlan Balzer (10/12Yo) - every good team needs an anchor, just ahead of Crowy, who looked pleased with himself as he set superstar and soon-to-be-dad Thomas Do Canto (03/12WJ) out on what was possibly the fastest lap of the day. Tom scorched down the back straight to claim the lead of the race from the highly talented Sydney High Open Team, who looked surprised to see a green blur surge past! Things didn t get any slower as two of our favourite exports, Cameron Griffith (14/12Yo) and Oliver Hoare (15/12St) continued to put daylight between them and their rival schoolboys as they shaved a considerable 2min and 17secs of the previous Old Boy s Record in a new time of 32min secs! Yikes! Incidentally, the 2nd old boy team to finish was self-titled Trinity non Olympian Old Boy Team. Kenneth the smiling assassin Cho (11/12Ar) ran a swift 3rd leg before sending Trinity Cross Country stalwart Phillip Mugridge (10/12WJ) around the 2.6km for a hot lap, Muggers looked to be in form. The fact that all these Old Boys turned up for a run, as well as another of Trinity s favourite Cross Country sons, Arthur Divis (13/12Hi) also arrived hoping a 3rd Trinity Old Boy Team may have formed, makes an old MIC s heart sing to think that so many boys who have been part of the Trinity Cross Country fraternity are, first, still running and second, their Cross Country memories from School are such that they are keen to come back and join us so regularly! I firmly believe this is what schoolboy sport is all about - long may it continue! Other Trinity Teams to perform superbly and contribute to what was the most successful Trinity Relays ever, from a Trinity perspective, were the 16s and 14s Teams. The 16s Team of Jonno Batson (10WH), Nathaniel Davies (10Ke), Lelland Hui (10Fo) and Kash Powell (10Ar) absolutely smoked their opposition to be a full minute ahead of the 2nd placed Scots team. The 14s team, Ethan Brouw (8Ta), Patrick Cantlon (7Du), William Cooper (7Hi) and Logan Kaye (9Ho) also annihilated any semblance of competition as they put a considerable 2min 55secs into their nearest rivals Sydney High! It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the assistance of the Trinity parents who helped to marshall on the course as well as providing a yummy morning tea for all gathered. Our Captain William Jeffree (12Ho) was excellent in his service to the gathered crowd and did a fine job assisting and presenting medals to the winning teams with Mr Engele. Neither showed any sign of shying away from the camera during the presentation! Enjoy the break ahead and remember to go for a run rather than play a silly computer game! Good running! From antiquity, mathematicians have known that the ratio, denoted by Pi, of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, is a constant. Archimedes, without using decimal points or the number zero, calculated that value over two thousand years ago, with more than 99%.accuracy. It is also one of the four fundamental mathematical constants in Euler s formula. This talk will discuss why this simple ratio is so important, how it is approximated and give some examples of the many areas in mathematics and physics, with no obvious connections to circles, in which Pi appears.
