1 D G 410D Newsletter July 2018 "For them. For each other." Dear Fellow Lions, Welcome to the first newsletter for the new year! This is going to be an exciting and challenging year. I am, however, confident that no challenge is too big for this District to overcome. I would like to thank each and every Lion in the District for the opportunity to be their representative this year. The pledges of support we received from all-over were really special and humbling. Tanja and I are fully committed to serving you to the best of our ability. The Convention in Las Vegas was an eye-opener. Not only did we see what Lions from all over the world are doing, we also realised that the problems Clubs are experiencing are the same everywhere! You are not alone! I do not want to take up too much space in the Newsletter. It is for you and your Club to share achievements and successes. But allow me to put a challenge to you all: Do just one thing this year that you have never done before. It might just be a catalyst to revitalizing your Club. 4 Swellendam lions - ons dien Nuwe Leeu aan die stuur Om versigtig te wees met kritiek maar gul met lof, om op te bou en nie af te breek nie. Hierdie is die leuse waarmee nuwe President, Jako Cilliers, die komende jaar die Lions skip gaan stuur. Lions Swellendam het Vrydag 22 Junie hul President vir jaar 2018/2019 ingehuldig by n sprankel geleentheid by Tredici in Swellendam en hul kabinet voorgestel aan lede. Jako Cilliers, n Oud-President van 2001, sal weer die span lei, en word bygestaan deur n passievolle span leeus Eduard Koch (gewese president), Desmond Hayes (vise president en lidmaatskap). Kobin Koch (sekretaris), Barry Saaiman (tesourier), Johannes Steyn (fondsinsameling), Theo Augustyn (diensprojekte), Leon Ras (kwikslaer), Phillip Bromley (Leeutemmer) en Herman Smit (zone voorsitter). Nicolize Hayes neem leiding met die media portefeulje. Die Presidentsinhuldiging is waargeneem deur Past District Governer Joggie Kastner van Stilbaai Lions, en die aand se verrigtinge was pittig gelei deur Lion Eugene Marais. Die Presidentspaar se spesiale gaste was oud- Lion Hannes Human en sy vrou Riana, asook vorige bure, Matthewis en Moira Odendaal. Oud-president Eduard Koch het sy jaar afgesluit met n suksesvolle jaarverslag en nederig teruggekyk na n jaar van inbou in die gemeenskap. Onder sy hoogtepunte was dit duidelik dat die pas afgelope jaar n besige een was buiten die gewilde Bingo middae by Huis AA Tomlinson en die maandelikse Klub 100 kontanttrekking, was daar die uitruilstudente inisiatief, snoekbraai ten bate van Huis AA Tomplinson, diabetes-dag by Swellenmark Sentrum, die uitreikprojek na Herberg Kinderhuis in Robertson, hande-vat by Kleinfontein plaasskool, die jaarlikse gholfdag fondsinsamelling, kosprojek by Swellendam Skou, hulp by die Delabat koshuis, 200 hoenders wat Lions gebraai het ten bate van Mossienes Kleuterskool en ook suksesvolle stigting van die jong leeus (Leos) klub. Geen sprankelaand is egter volledig sonder n paar toekennings nie. Lion Engela de Kock het die uitsonderlike Melvin Jones toekenning ontvang ( This award is the highest form of recognition and embodies humanitarian ideas consistent with the nature and purpose of Lionism. The recipient of this award becomes a model of exemplary service to his club and the community which it serves. The Melvin Jones Fellowship Award is a nation-wide award.) Lion Johannes Steyn is aangewys as die Lion van die jaar en vir jare diens is Lion Francois de Kock (15 jaar) en Lion Theo Augustyn (10 jaar) erken. Everybody can be great. Everybody can serve. Lions make a conscientious decision to serve

5 Sedgefield lions - we serve Induction of new President What a prestigious evening we had at the Induction of incoming President Zwaai, 3 new members and awarding 6 LCI Honorary awards. Three Lions received these awards, Honorary Member John Allan, Lion Alison Watson and Lion Mario Ferreira. Sedgefield Locals who received the awards were Mike Hoffhuis and Michael Simon for their outstanding work to the Community during the fires and also for their contribution via Sedgefield Community Policing, and Cliffy Daniels for continuous support of the community. Two certificates of appreciation were also handed out to local Pick and Pay Manager Richard Godwin and Newspaper Editor Bomber Webb. DG Tillie and 1 st DGE Elect Pieter Nel were on hand to induct the President and the new members, Shane Nassif, Peter Bester and Valentine Benson.

6 Sedgefield lions - we serve Sedgefield animals Our dynamic Leos were once again called upon to assist at the SAM Sedgefield Animal Matters Fundraiser. Our local band Cloud 9 played for free, there was free entrance with a donations jar passed around. A lovely evening. Sedgefield wheelie race Our Lions and Leos were asked to assist at our local The Living Cornerstone Alzheimer facilities in their fun TLC Wheelie Race on 4 July. What a fun event. Lions marshaled and Leos manned a sweets and cooldrinks table and also participated in the fun of the day. Leos Max and Arno in the wheelbarrow, closely checking out the competition.. 7 Sedgefield lions - we serve Sedgefield Lions man water tables at Knysna marathon A great day, albeit a very early start, in the forest by 6 am to man two water tables for the Knysna Marathon. Once again friends were on hand to assist in this big undertaking. Sadly the landscape is much altered after the fires of June 2017, and is so evident in the photo of the runners snaking up a treeless hill which was formerly a thick forest. New Lion Shane is seen with daughter Isobelle lending a helping hand Sedgefield Lions marshal at Oyster Festival Cycle Ride Once again our Lions were called upon to marshal at the Oyster Festival cycle race. We are always so grateful to friends for always being so willing to help out. It was a great race with a huge field. Saturday, 30 June. 8 Uitenhage lioness club branch Hobo Night Fundraiser we serve The Uitenhage Lionesses Club Branch hosted a Hobo night fundraiser where all funds raised will be used to provide soup and bread including the donation of bags of clothing received will be handed out to those in need, confirmed Lioness President Sue. She thanked all the members for their support which included the selling of tickets which was well supported by the local UD Community. Uitenhage lions - we serve

14 Port Alfred lions - we serve AFTER a two-year term, outgoing Port Alfred Lions Club president Norman Elliott handed over the reins to Francois de Klerk at an induction dinner at Harry B s recently. Projects: Catering at the annual Night Bowls competition at the Kowie Bowling Club, through which they raised R which they donated to Port Alfred High School for the pool project. Shoebox Christmas presents which they donated to the needy 60 cases of their famous Lions Christmas cakes to raise money for community projects. LP Norman Elliott credited June Turner for being the best seller of cakes. Operation Brightsight - 24 people were tested and 18 people received glasses. He said local optometrist DM Radue also donated glasses to needy people out of his own pocket. Free diabetes and blood pressure tests for people, with 259 having a sugar test and 137 a blood pressure test. Partnered with Rotary to restore the Toposcope in Bathurst. Monthly trivia evening run by Lloyd Stephenson, who also does another quiz for the residents of Sunset Park retirement village. Donated six heated blankets to the NSRI for use in rescue callouts. Awards for 100% attendance were given to Rob Brunette, Francois de Klerk, Ilana de Klerk, Lorenda de Klerk, Dirk de Vos, Lucinda de Vos, John Dell, Nico Muller, Mike Newlands, Max Stander, Lloyd Stephenson, Gail Turner and Neville Williamson. In his induction speech, Francois de Klerk said: It s a great honour to be inducted as Lion president. I d like to thank Norman for what I ve learned from him over the past few years. Thank you to the members for electing me. You join a service organisation because you want to, not because you have to, he said.

15 E l Port rex lions - we serve On 17 June 2018 a luncheon was held at the Buffalo Club in East London, for the induction of Presidents Diane and Cyril, members were joined by Lions from the Komga,Beacon Bay and Cambridge West Lions Club. Congratulations to Lions Chow Bissell and Nina-Mari Taylor for sharing the award of Lion of the Year for 2018 as elected by the East London Port Rex Lions Club. Many thanks to all the members who were in attendance at this important occasion. All of us appreciate your fellowship and assistance. 17 PICK n PAY - FOOD FORWARD Lions Mandela Day Project Commemorating an Icon Target to feed One million hungry people The Lions Multiple District of South Africa was invited by Food Forward of Pick n Pay to support an initiative in support of Mandela Day. The aim of the Project is to feed those who are hungry and commemorating an icon who did so much for this country. As part of the Lions motto of We Serve Lions Clubs throughout the width and breadth of South Africa joined forces in support of this excellent Project. Lion members manned the entrances of Pick n Pay stores and requested customers to make a donation of non-perishable food items that was displayed on plastic bags supplied by Food Forward. The Project held over the period 13 to 15 July 2018 was well supported and confirmed that the total amount of non-perishable food collected throughout District 410D was tons. The photos show the support Lions Clubs in District 410D received from their communities. Well done to those who participated. Many clubs were able to keep the food collected and distribute to charities of their choice while those in major cities went into the Food Forward pool.
