Fortnightly Up-Date 26 th September, 2014 Years III & IV Grimsthorpe Countryside Day On Tuesday, 16 th September, we went on a countryside day to Grimsthorpe Castle. We met a man called Gary and Gary had a gun dog called Murphy. Murphy was a Labrador Retriever and he was 7 (49 years old). Gary said Kiss Kiss and Murphy jumped up and kissed him. Next was logging. There was a tractor delivering the logs and a man was cutting the logs into fire wood. We groomed the ponies and we were also learning about the brushes and combs. Next we saw deer. We learnt about antlers and the fallow deer and the red Deer. We went all around the kitchen garden and learnt about all of the plants. We had a tour around the castle and saw a throne and there was a picture of King George. Eliza Culloty (Form IV JW) On Tuesday, 16 th September, Year IV went on a Countryside Day at Grimsthorpe Castle. We made bread on a fire, it was so delicious. Next, we went to the deer. I stroked some deer and they licked my face. They had fallow deer. Next, we went to the kitchen garden and we learnt all about vegetables. The man showed us rhubarb, lettuces, green beans, cabbages and lots of different things. After, we went to the stone mason who showed us how to make patterns on a brick. He lifted up a quarry block with chains, the quarry block looked very heavy. We went to the castle. It is very big and it is so beautiful. There are lots of thrones in the castle, Lady Willoughby comes there sometimes. We had a great day! Molly Turcan (Form IV JW) On Tuesday, 16 th September, Forms III and VI went to Grimsthorpe Castle. First, we went to see the gun dog, it was so well trained. His owner, Gary, threw the tennis ball for him and Murphy didn t go until he was told to. We all raced him. Then we went to the logging people. We watched them putting the logs through the machine that chopped them into pieces. Next, we went to cook bread. Phoebe went first and it went black on the outside. When it was done, we tried some. It was really yummy. Then we went to the deer. I loved the deer because they were so sweet. We groomed the horses until they were sparkling then we had our photo taken. At the end, we had a tour around the castle. India Wyatt (Form IV JW)

Year III Rocks and Soils at Stibbington On Monday, 21 st September, Form III went to Stibbington. We were doing all about rocks in Science. When we got there, we met the lady. She was called Nicky. Once we had put our bags in the cloak room, we went into another room and there was a table with a plate, mug, talcum powder, breakfast biscuits and toast. They have all got some type of rock in them. Next, we went back onto the coach and we went to the old quarry. When we got to the quarry, it looked like a field because it hadn t been used for ages. When we stopped, it looked more like a quarry and we looked for some fossils. Then we walked a different way back to the coach. After lunch, we did some experiments using a microscope to identify rocks. Soon it was time to go back to school and we all had a fabulous time. Connie Kingston (Form III SB) Year II Museum Visit On Tuesday, 23 rd September, we went to the museum. My favourite part was the Punch and Judy colouring! I loved all of it. Lloyd dressed up in an old fashioned swimming costume and so did Sophia. We made Punch and Judy puppets, it was a great day. Esther Morse (Form II JD) Form II went to the museum on Tuesday, 16 th September. We had to hunt for buckets and spades. We learnt about Victorian times they had a penny lick. A penny lick is when somebody has an ice cream then somebody has it again without washing it. Yuck! Grace Hornsby (Form II SG)

Year V Trip to National Space Centre On Friday, 19 th September, we visited the National Space Centre in Leicester. First, we made paper rockets and launched them on an air pump. Then we saw the Soyuz Spacecraft. I couldn t believe it had been into Space because it looked so old and battered! The planetarium was so awesome because it was so large and made me feel like I was really in Space and when the rocket nose dived and flew towards us it was so scary. I learnt that in Space, if you are not wearing a suit, the temperature can drop to -200 C. Be careful of the meteorites because they come at you without a warning and you have to dodge them! Tess Cunliffe (Form V NC) I liked the planetarium because I really enjoy watching movies but I liked this better because it was a movie all around me. I liked the movie Astronaut because it shows what an astronaut has to do in his job. The movie told us what kind of dangers there are in Space such as meteorites, lack of air, being very cold and the spaceship may break down. Oliver Bochenek (Form V NC) Ruben Persona (Form V NC)

Francesca Shepherd (Form V NC)

Small Talk on Rutland Radio On Friday, 19 th September, Rutland Radio came into Brooke Priory to play a radio game called Smalltalk. All of the Prefects, Ava Adderley, Jemima Hart, Harry Watts and Luca Martin were asked to take part. We each were given a different piece of paper with questions about a famous place, person or animal. We read through it a few times in our head and then it was time for us to be recorded. The director held a microphone and we read out clues, taking pauses so they could split up the clues and we giggled a lot! It was really fun and we would love to do it again. Ava Adderley (Form VI IW) & Jemima Hart (Form VI LC ) Nursery Apples & Kindergarten Welly Day On Monday, 22 nd September, the Nursery Apples and Kindergarten enjoyed an autumnal Welly Morning at Brooke. They went for a walk to look for signs of autumn, made autumn crowns, hunted for bugs and walked down the stream. Here are some of their highlights: I liked the worms and making a mud pie. Eliana Jones (Nursery) Riding on the tractor bus was fun. Charlie Roche (Nursery) Making a mud pie was the best. I put mud in it and water and grass. Jude Bouch (Nursery) I liked making my mud pie. I put water in it. I went over the troll bridge, I was really brave and I went in the den. Cole Bushell (Nursery) I loved going to the den, there were no trolls in the den. And I loved looking down the rabbit holes, there were no rabbits. Lomax Giles (Nursery) I liked holding a fat slug! Charlotte Craig (Kindergarten) I liked climbing! Harry Turcan (Kindergarten) I liked going in the ditch! Gus McMurray (Kindergarten)

Sports Report On 17 th September, the boys A Team Rugby squad travelled to Stamford for a pre-season tournament. The boys had prepared well with Mr Wand and were excited to play on the fantastic fields over at Stamford. The boys won their first game against Grantham comfortably, but were beaten by the two best teams in the tournament; Stamford and eventual winners, Laxton. The boys finished fifth overall after beating Fairfield in the play-off round. Well done to Harry Simms who was our player of the tournament for his effective work at the breakdown. Also on the 17 th September, the U11A girls Hockey team played Oakham. It was really exciting to put all of our skills into a match situation and test out positional play against another school. Our defenders improved rapidly, realising that they had to tackle hard and play long balls to the midfield. The midfield and forward line ran their hearts out, finding the goal twice with great shots, although one goal was disallowed as we were outside the D. The result was 2-1 to Oakham; it was an excellent first game performance from the girls. Well done, to everybody! In an exciting start to their Hockey season, the U11 B girls also played Oakham. At first they were a little timid, but they picked up their game and when they scored their first goal there was no stopping them! At half time, the score was 1-1 but the girls knew they could score again and were determined to win. They stuck to their positions and, with some super defending from Mathilda Holland, they got the ball up the field and scored twice more. The final score was 3-2 to Brooke super effort, girls. On Wednesday, 24 th September, we hosted Grantham Prep School at Under 11 A&B Rugby. Both games were played in great spirit, with victories for Brooke Priory. It was pleasing to see the sportsmanship and humble attitude from the Brooke players even when they were in a comfortable winning position. Congratulations to Harry Watts and Alex Brown who were both named man of the match. It was a great afternoon with seven games of rugby and numerous Netball games going on all at once. Good luck to all the athletes who will be running in the forthcoming Brooke Priory Cross Country. The event takes place on Saturday, 4 th October, at Shorne Hill, Riddlington Road. All athletes should be at the event 20 minutes before their race and they should report to their team manager (Boys: Mr Weeks, Girls: Mrs Gelderbloom and Mrs Burton) 10 minutes before their race is due to start. Duncan Flint, Head of Sport Match Reports On Wednesday, 17 th September, the U11B Hockey Team played Oakham School. It was an exciting match as the ball kept travelling up and down the pitch and a few shots had been made at goal but none had gone in. Luckily, we did well and managed to get three goals whilst the other team got two but it was still a great effort made by both teams. Well done to Ava, who is our goalkeeper. During the warm ups, she hurt her leg but managed to keep going and she did really well. Well done to everybody for trying their hardest! Olivia Brown (Form VI IW) On Wednesday, 17 th September, the U11A Hockey Team had an exciting first match of the season against Oakham School; sadly, we lost by 1 goal to 2. We saw an excellent performance from our striker Olivia Dent, who scored our goal and she had a second score only narrowly ruled as being outside of the D and therefore not counting. Tess Cunliffe, Gabi Gelderbloom, Lea Swanick, Jemima Hart and Ella Bartle-Jones all featured well for our team. Both of Oakham s goals were scored by old Brooke Priory girl, Ellie Crawley, however we played well as a team and will no doubt learn from or first match experience. Isabella Edmunds (Form VI IW)

On Wednesday, 17 th September, the U11A Rugby Team played four matches against Grantham, Stamford, Laxton and St Hugh s. We comfortably beat Grantham (5-0) and St Hugh s (4-0) but lost to Laxton (4-1) and narrowly to Stamford (2-1). Morgan scored 3 tries in all, including an amazing interception from one end of the pitch to the other. Our toughest game was against a very big Laxton side, which went on to win the tournament. I think some of them had beards At times, our line speed was too slow but, overall, the team put in a very big hearted performance and we scored a lot more tries than we conceded. Danny Rumble (Form VI IW) On Wednesday, 24 th September, the U11B Team played their first match of the season against Grantham Prep School. The squad was split into two teams of 7. Immediately, the boys showed their experience by continually driving forward and rucking well to keep possession. This strength in their play resulted in us running in many tries to give us a well-earned victory (15-1 to Brooke). Well played, everyone. Keep up the hard work! Tristram Hart (Form VI IW) On Wednesday, 24 th September, Brooke Priory took on Grantham Prep. They were honourable opponents but we showed them no mercy. A special mention to Harry Watts, who kept the defence busy with his Tasmanian Devil impression. We were masters in the scrum, winning several against the head. Our support running and off-loading kept the game flowing and the pressure on. Joe Cooper played some great rugby, which turned into tries on two occasions. Possibly one of the smallest pitches we have played on produced one of our biggest results: 11-0 to Brooke Priory.
