1 HEAD MASTER'S BULLETIN FRIDAY 23 FEBRUARY 2018 NEWS & NOTIFICATIONS From the Head Master The Annual Scholars Assembly for HSC and IB students was held this week. Forty-four of our graduating students met the criteria to have their achievements honoured in this way. In the challenges presented by the summative credential of their secondary schooling, these are the ones who rose to eminence in their cohort. An obvious question to ask is How did that happen? One of the most influential scholars in the field of gifted and talented education is Dr. Françoys Gagné. He has developed the Differentiated Model of Giftedness and Talent (DMGT), which describes the developmental process by which talent in a particular field emerges. In our context, his model has reference to the process by which our top achievers become the top achievers. A quick Google search will reveal the basics of the DMGT; if you are willing to invest eight minutes, a video link can be found here. Gagné observes that the starting point is the natural ability of the individual. In other words, their giftedness. I think the language of gift is appropriate here, because these innate abilities are not earned or deserved. Intellectual, creative, social, perceptual, muscular or motor control our innate abilities are gifts. Gagné then observes that giftedness is not the whole story. Our gifts are developed by catalysts that act upon them. These catalysts include environmental factors, such as the context in which one is raised and educated, the individuals that one encounters whether mentors or peers and the opportunities that are provided. Other catalysts include intrapersonal traits and capacities, including motivation, will-power, self-regulation and the like. The catalysts act on us for both good and for ill. Our gifts, and the catalysts, interact with one another in the developmental process of learning. The process of learning brings all these factors together in the wonderfully rich tapestry of life. This complex interaction of elements, embodied in a unique way for each individual student, is the learning process. What is my point, with reference to our scholars? The first point is that our scholars are to be congratulated for their achievements. They are THEIR achievements. The School does not achieve an ATAR. Teachers do not get Band 6 results. Parents are not awarded All-Rounder or IB Distinction Certificates. The boys do which is why it is valid to celebrate them as we do. The second point is that the boys did not do it alone. Their families, their friends, their school and their teachers all played a part. Only the most short-sighted or self-centred young man could claim sole credit. And the third point has to do with an element that sometimes appears in the DMGT and is sometimes left out; that is, chance. Gagné recognises the role of chance, by which he means those factors in life that appear to be random and beyond both prediction and control. In Christian thinking, rather than chance, we speak of God s providence. Our conviction is that, behind the apparent blindness of chance, there is a sovereign hand at work weaving together all things for the divine purpose. That is why, as well as congratulating our young men, and acknowledging the contributions of so many people in helping them to this point, it is entirely appropriate to express thankfulness to the God whose providence undergirds the learning that takes place in our School day by day. 3 ACADEMIC Academic Focus Scholars Assembly Recognising Academic Achievement This week saw the annual Scholars Assembly on Wednesday morning, which was a wonderful celebration for the high achieving students, as well as parents and staff, of the Class of Trinity sets high selection criteria for Scholars Assembly. Combining measures representing the HSC and the IB Diploma, the criteria are: 1. An ATAR greater than or equal to A reported HSC mark of 100 in any 2 unit Board Developed Subject, or 50 in any 1 unit Board Developed Subject, or being named among the top few places in the State in any subject 3. Acknowledged as an HSC All-Round Achiever by scoring Band 6 in 10 units 4. Achieving an IB Distinction by scoring an IB mark of 40 or higher 5. Selection of a major work for inclusion in a HSC showcase 6. Winning a major University scholarship. 7. Winning a highly competitive cadetship, grant or similar award based substantially on academic performance. Such recognition is one of the highest accolades the School can bestow and Trinity was delighted to honour 44 boys from the Class of 2017 who met these criteria. An event such as Scholar s Assembly is not only about recognising those whose academic learning at Trinity has come to an end. All our Senior School boys joined the staff, Scholars and parents in the assembly. They listened as Dr de Lany interviewed some of the young men from the Class of 2017, gleaning insights about how their own academic journeys might accelerate in the coming years to be avenues of deep satisfaction and enjoyment. These Scholars spoke about commitment and diligence, but most significantly evidenced a passion that guided their choices of the subjects they elected to study and the possibilities which now lie before them. The School seeks to acknowledge the academic of achievement of all boys in a range of ways, one of which is presentation of Academic Citations. An Academic Citation is awarded when a boy receives five Departmental Awards, from at least three different Departments, and presents these to the Curriculum Office. Every Head of Department has Departmental Awards, which they are encouraged to give to boys who demonstrate significant effort or produce work of high merit. Boys should ensure that, if awarded Departmental Awards for meritorious academic achievement, they keep these and, when five are accumulated, present them to the Curriculum Office to exchange for an Academic Citation. 4 Year 10 Careers - Parent Information Evening Dear Year 10 students and parents, In Week 2 this term Year 10 completed a series of tests related to developing a career profile. Part of the process included testing for aptitude in general reasoning, verbal ability, numerical ability, perceptual ability, spatial ability, mechanical ability and some other relevant workplace skills. Boys also completed a questionnaire that identified the kind of working environment that they are most interested in and for which they are most suited. Information gathered through this testing will be presented to boys and their parents in the form of a comprehensive report called the Morrisby Profile. On Tuesday the 6th March Year 10 boys and their parents are invited to an information session being held in the Assembly Hall at 7.00pm. Emma Goodsir, the Consultant Educational Psychologist who administered the test, will be explaining the Morrisby Careers Testing process and how to understand the Morrisby Profile reports which will be available for collection on the night. Housemasters will also be available for any questions you may have regarding the process post this presentation night. This is an important step in the process you and your son may have started in considering his options for the next two years of study and beyond. I look forward to seeing you there on the night. 5 News from the Arthur Holt Library The International Baccalaureate Candidates Begin To Save The World Last Friday afternoon the Arthur Holt Library hosted the Group Four IB presentations. We were most impressed by the quality of their public speaking and the novel approaches this clever cohort is taking to solve some important environmental issues. Many of the materials associated with the presentations are still on display in the Arthur Holt Library and we invite students and teachers come up to the Arthur Holt and have a look, and then leave with a book? (our Blind Date with a Book promotion will continue for one more week!) INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY This Wednesday 21st of February was International Mother Language Day. This is an important opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the rich and growing diversity of our Trinity community. Being multilingual not only helps with communication: it can benefit cognition, problem solving and, according to this article, protect the brain against dementia. If you feel encouraged by the occasion to do some reading in a language other than English we have an international fiction collection representing a wide variety of languages. 7 SPORT Basketball CAS Round 7 versus Barker 1st V An improved Trinity make the undefeated Barker work right to the end. Trinity young roosters took a big step forward against a strong, experienced Barker team who now have wrapped up the CAS Premiership with their twenty-one-point victory (52-73) over Greens in a tough hard fought contest. It was a low scoring affair in the opening quarter with Trinity only trailing by just two point (8-10). On the back of some scrambling, Trinity D and Earvin Dizon (10Ta) and Jack Nichol (10He) combined for twelve second period points, Trinity went to the main break right on Barker s heels down only a handful of points (27-32). The hectic pass of the game had taken its toll on the young Trinitarians as Barker extended their lead to double digits early in the third quarter, but Trinity displayed some grit and fought their way back with Finn McCann (10Hi) nailing a big 3 and Alec Mackenzie (11WJ) grabbing boards and attacking the rim. Tyrese Proctor (9Fo) then chimed some slick drives and creativity to see Trinity cut the lead to just eight points. Unfortunately missed opportunities through excellent lead up work again hurt Trinity, as they couldn t connect on easy baskets giving the momentum back to Barker. If Trinity can maintain the focus and physical play that they have produced in recent weeks, then there is no doubt they can string some wins together in the last three games of the season. 9 along with Justin Jasa (12Ho), who showed his ever-improving ability at the free-throw line to have Trinity nipping at the unbeaten Barker s heels. Strong efforts from William Bonaccorso (12St) and Jonathon Roseworn (12WJ) saw Trinity perform well on the defensive end, but Barker s key personnel kept the Greens at bay as the boys from Summer Hill headed to the break down by 10 points (25-35). A strong message from Coaches Treloar and Carter at half-time proved to be what the Seconds needed as they charged back into the game with a 10-0 run. This was led by solid play from Harrison Barden (12Yo) and David Carreon (12St) who proved to be a handful for Barker at both ends. Unfortunately, Barker proved to be too strong in key moments late in the game, but Trinity should be very satisfied with their performance against this seasons CAS best team. 12 Barker team. Strong positional play under the basket by Miller Tauilili-Palesasa (11He) and Jerry Ren (12Ke) created the platform for guards Andrew Kim (12We) and Nathan Roberts (11We) to run wild in the open court as they scored 20 and 14 points respectively. 5th V An improved team performance on the defensive end with structural adjustments in the Fifths full court pressure resulted in a solid 19-point win. Mahdi Makki (12La) and Vincent Buda (11Ta) demonstrated good qualities of leadership and skill. Ethan Thomas s (12He) presence under their hoop was vital. Harry Tran (11Ta) played solidly in and around the rim, whilst Christian Hayek (11Ke) was solid all over the court. Thomas Newell (12Yo) continues to own the boards and play well above his height. 6th V The Greens kept their unbeaten run alive with a comprehensive victory. Jacob Savage (12Ho) was again consistent with his organisation at the point, while Tallis Coman (12Yo) led with his relentless play and constant encouragement of his teammates. Jorge Paraskevopoulos (11Fo) played his best game of the season, racking up points, rebounds and assists. 9th V True to form, the 9ths made it another heart-stopper for all participating, watching or even those simply passing by, winning by a single point in a game that came right down to the wire, and which was decided in the dying seconds. Matthew Miller (12Ho) was indispensable throughout the game as an imposing centre on debut, making valuable contributions on both the offence and defence. Guards Shannon Kwak (11La), Alexander Ciarroni (12WJ), Bill Tran (11St), Kenny Vu (11La) and William Brockie (11Fo) kept level heads throughout the game and controlling the tempo, as they rotated in their duties. Isaac Khoury (12WH) was again lead point-scorer and as well offered some truly awe-inspiring moments of sheer athleticism when presented with the opportunity for an intercept and/or a fast break. Year 10D Trinity jumped to an early lead at the Brick Pit with Vasili Eliades (Mu) proving unstoppable on the fast break. Oliver Sun (Hi) had a great first half with almost every touch turning into points. Newcomer to Trinity, Noah Ta ale (La) showing his athletic prowess, will be a welcome asset to the team to help the Greens run away with a good victory. Year 10E A gallant Trinity side maintained their composure to produce a pleasing four-point win. Joshua Richardson (Hi) and Evan Williams (We) stifled many Barker attacking raids with strong interior defence, which resulted in quick transition baskets to Jacob Alha (Ho) and Diego Hernandez-Catellanos (WJ). Year 9A After an extremely quick start on the offensive end by Thomas Buvac (WJ), the Greens got out to a small lead, which was maintained through steady teamwork. Barker made a run at Trinity and were able to lock the scores up, before Deonte Williams (Yo) and Hayden Johnson (WH) combined to instigate another Trinity surge and a hard-fought three-point win. Year 9C It s hard to give someone a special mention in this game, as it was truly a team win. However, Leo Byfield (Ke) deserves some recognition as this was by far his best game since joining the team. Leo was great on both ends of the floor, getting several steals as well as attacking the basket. Although it was a convincing win for Trinity the lead could have been much bigger had the boys converted on their open layups. Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 12 of 51

13 Year 9D The Greens dominated this game largely due to their improved defence. Trinity s full court pressure resulted in many steals which led to many fast break opportunities. In the half court setting Hunter Hannaford (Du) dominated on both offence and defence with his non-stop hustle. Another strong performance was the play of Andrew Cavallaro (He). Andrew was relentless on the defensive end, managing to influence the Barker guards into making poor decisions which resulted in the Greens picking up easy baskets. Year 9E An undermanned Trinity team struggled in the first half of the game, but rallied back in the second, outscoring Barker in the final fifteen minutes. Zach Gindy (Ke) and Paul Audi (Ar) secured the win with some clutch plays down the stretch, but it was an attitude shift from the whole team that put Trinity in a position to prevail. Special mention must go to Joseph Coorey (St) and Ali Issmail (Ta) from the 9Fs who ably joined the rotation until the full team arrived. Year 9F A dominant performance by Christopher Esposito (Ke) allowed Trinity to establish a commanding lead that the boys maintained for the remainder of the game. Barker fought hard in the second half, but were unable to contain the playmaking of Owen Peck (Fo) and Perry Chan (We), whose driving ability kept defenders on the back foot. Year 8A Although Trinity won, it wasn t their most polished performance. Christian Farr (Mu) did a great job getting his team mates open by setting some great screens while knocking down his open shots. James Arthur (WH) was again tremendous on defence, creating turnovers for the likes of George Robson (He), Bailey Chambers (Ta), Ethan Hunter (WH) and James Andrews (La) to turn into valuable points. Year 8B The 8Bs attention to detail is real strength of this group, who continue to improve immensely with each outing. Minus a few players with illness, Trinity were still dominant in their 20-point victory. Elias Sidiropoulos (Yo) was outstanding, going to his jump hook to score valuable points, while Matthew Nicholas (Ke) ran the team with composure from the Point Guard position. Year 8C It was a tough defensive encounter, but Trinity prevailed in a low scoring affair (17-15). Late in the second half, with three boys in foul trouble, Trinity had to make some changes to ensure cooler heads were on the court. With this in mind, Daniel Cattana (St), Paulo Tauiliili-Pelesasa (He), Nicholas Kiceec (WH), Evan Alexiou (Ta) and Matthew De Belle (Sc) stepped up under pressure and a calmly controlled the final minutes to secure an exciting win. Year 8D Even with the slow start, the 8Ds had another exceptional win to extend their undefeated season. It was especially nice to see Trinity work through their set plays and take good, clean scoring options. Benefiting from great teamwork were Hugh Browning (Du) with 11 points, and Sam Waddington (Mu) scoring 8 points. These two boys have taken the time to listen and learn their roles, a fact which is now paying great dividends. Special mention should go to Keelan Stephandellis (Hi) and Antony Borodin (We) who played their strongest games of the season. Year 8E Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 13 of 51

14 The 8Es started off strongly with Hunter Goldsbrough (Fo) aggressively slicing through the lane and scoring the first six points. Joshua Van Der Groot (We) ran up court with intensity as Isaac Cunningham (He) threw crisp passes over the Barker defence to get easy layups and build a big lead. Steven Yarad (Mu) was tenacious on the boards, pulling down offensive rebounds leading to more shot opportunities resulting in Trinity ending victorious. Year 8G After a close first half, in which Trinity matched Barker for intensity, the 8Gs came out after half time with a focus on their rebounding. This turned the game around for the Greens, as they ran out very comfortable winners in the end. Special mention goes to Ari Nikolakopoulos (Yo), who rebounded brilliantly to turn the tide Trinity s way. Year 8H Trinity once again lacked some intensity in the first half, before eventually matching an enthusiastic Barker up and down the court. The Greens depth proved valuable, with Barker running out of gas as Trinity stormed home. Special mention goes to Evangelos Papadopoulos (Hi) for a solid defensive effort throughout. Year 8I The 8Is had a convincing win through effectively penetrating the Barker defence. Jaiden Timperi (Hi) and Leo Zantides (La) turned in strong performances and were also selfless in setting up opportunities for team mates. Edmund Baker (Du) and Mohammed Zaarour (Sc) played solidly in defence. Year 7C The first half was a back and forth battle between the two teams, however some strong finishes in the paint by Peter Georgelos (WH), and some handy defence by Adam Taleb (Mu) and Tobias Lacey (Hi) gave the greens a commanding lead at the half. Barker pull back after the break, leaving the game tied with 10 seconds to go. Tim Braga (Du) made an authoritative rebound in the dying moments of the game, getting fouled on his way back Greens a one-point victory. Year 7D Trinity s point guard combo of Kye Graziano (Ke) and Ty Garci (Ho) were instrumental in accommodating the good team play. Some good shooting by Giancarlo Vari (Ke) combined with some powerful defensive efforts from Kian Guildea (Du) and Nicholas Katsiris (Ta) kept the Greens right in the contest, which ended in an exciting draw. Year 7E This week saw Trinity bounce back tohave a decisive win after a tough lesson the week before. Jaden Leung (Hi) at the start of the game stole the ball continuously from the opposition, stifling their offence and allowing the Greens to take an early lead. Some good team play between Charlie Naffah (Du) and Davide Eboli (WH) allowed Trinity to maintain this lead into the second half. Consistent scoring by Liam Sandilant (Hi) and Sam Niulala (St) helped secure the lead and ensure the win. Year 7G Simply a masterclass! The Greens ere all over Barker from start to finish. So much so that Barker struggled to past half way with Trinity s superb full court defence. While, every Greens player got in on the action and contributed there were a few that simply stood out. The performance from Daniel Christodoulou (Mu) was nothing short of perfect. Setting up teammates and scoring at will was only the start. Daniel was also a nightmare for the opposition on the defensive end. The other star of the game was Jonathon Reissis (WJ) who simply annihilated Barker with his height. There were several times in the game where Jonathon grabbed four straight offensive rebounds, simply no one could match it with him from Barker. However, there was something Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 14 of 51

15 that impressed me more than the blowout win and that was the level of sportsmanship and respect every Trinity player displayed. Year 7H It was a tremendous start for Trinity, running out to early lead (12-0) after only four minutes. This was largely due to the play of Liam Cavanagh (Ar). Liam was at the helm of the team s early success with great defence which led to multiple opportunities for his teammates. While Liam was the catalyst, it was truly a great team display with the Greens willing to make the extra pass for an even better shot. Another special mention goes to Jamie Alison (Ke), who finished with 14 points and multiple offensive rebounds. 17 Cricket vs Barker Round 7 CAS Vs Barker It was a round of highs and lows for Trinity s sides against an always strong Barker College. The 1st XI secured a tight win and in doing so have secured enough points to wrap up the CAS premiership. This is an amazing feat considering that there are a further three rounds remaining in the competition. It has been a stellar season for the 1st XI. They re-claimed the Henderson Shield from Trinity Kew, claimed their second successive CAS T20 premiership and now their back to back CAS premiership ambition has been achieved. The 1st XI side has now not lost a CAS match, in either T20 or the traditional format, in over two seasons, which is a remarkable achievement and one which has been a great team effort. Big congratulations also to Mr Andrew Payne, who in his first season coaching the 1st XI has bought home the silverware. The second XI are also in the hunt for a premiership as they remain undefeated after a strong victory against Barker. It would be fantastic for Trinity Cricket to have our 1st and 2nd XI teams go through the season as premiers! 1st XI Trinity vs Barker always ends up being a very close affair and this match was no different. Trinity went into this round against the second-placed Barker with the possibility of winning the premiership. With Captain Matt Turner (12Ho) winning the toss and choosing to bat, Trinity got off to a solid start. Opener Josh Yeoh (10Sc) scored his maiden CAS fifty for the 1st XI and top scored with 57 as Trinity looked set to post a total of However, once Josh departed, Trinity struggled to form a partnership through the middle overs, resulting in Trinity being bowled out for 180 in 47 overs. After a fast start from Barker, Trinity were able to gain control of the innings with two good spells of fast bowling from Sebastian Buchanan(10Sc) 4/33, and Saachin Simpson (12WH) 3-25, leaving Barker reeling at However, Barker fought on with a 70 run eighth-wicket partnership nearly taking the game away from Trinity. But a decisive catch and run-out from Harry Goldsmith (10La) sealed the game and the premiership for Trinity. The fact that Trinity won the competition with three games left to play shows their dominance over the other CAS teams. The next challenge will be to remain undefeated throughout the rest of the season. Ritvik Dinesh (11Ke) 2nd XI Report Trinity s 2nd XI bowled first in a must-win clash against their rivals Barker. After a shaky first couple of overs, Jack Bermingham (11Mu) struck with two important wickets in consecutive deliveries. This gave the opportunity for Finn Ritchie (12Ke) to expose Barker s middle order, finishing with figures of Trinity managed to dismiss Barker for 67 after a Mitchell Johnson-esque performance from Blaise Mckee (11Ar) to finish off the tail with figures of 4-3 and a hat-trick. Special mention must also go to George Panopoulos (11Du) for his excellent work behind the stumps, finishing with 5 catches to his name. Trinity managed to score the 58 needed for victory off 14.4 overs, losing 5 wickets along the way in what were tough batting conditions. The seconds will now aim to remain undefeated for the remainder of the season and in doing so will take out the premiership Tim Ledden (12Yo) The rest of the sides in the School did not enjoy many successes. However, it is hoped that through defeat some lessons may be learned. No doubt the boys will work hard at training during the week in an attempt to make amends against St Aloysius this weekend. 20 Tennis vs Barker The good news in last weekend s fixture against Barker was the fact that we fielded a record number of 27 competitive tennis teams. The not so good news was that Barker won 20 matches while Trinity only managed to win 7. Despite the somewhat lopsided results it was fantastic to see the higher than usual participation rate and the competitive nature of most matches contested. It is always a good challenge to play the larger schools who tend to have greater depth due to higher numbers. Special mention must go to the Year 7 new comers who were able to salvage some pride for the Green and White by winning all of their matches by handsome margins. Well done to all involved! The 1st IV once again did it tough and were unable to recover from a 1-3 deficit after the doubles component of the match. Credit must be given to our first pairing of James McCabe (10St) and Max Nguyen (8Yo) who recovered to win their second doubles set 6-1. The 2nd pairing of Stanley Chen (12We) and Anthony Tsougranis (12Ke) played some beautiful tennis and were incredibly unlucky to win their second doubles set losing 8-10 in the tiebreak. A win here could have given the team enough momentum for an overall victory. In the Singles, James McCabe, our number one player was the shining light, winning his encounter easily to the tune of 6 games to one. Captain of Tennis Anthony Tsougranis once again lost narrowly after some brilliant shot making and match play. If he is able to maintain his intensity I have no doubt he will secure a victory in coming weeks. The 2nd IV went down 2-6 despite moments of brilliance. Thomas Spratt (11Mu) and Edward Lai (11St) once again proved themselves a formidable doubles combination by winning their second set doubles 6-3. Jordan Chen (12we) played well in his singles despite losing narrowly to a quality opponent. In other news James McCabe must be congratulated for gaining selection in the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) Representative team after performing brilliantly at the Kings School mid-week. James made the 8-man team after remaining undefeated through out the day long tournament, beating the best players from GPS, CAS, ISA and AICES. James will play at Bathurst later in the Year in an attempt to make the 6-man NSW Pizzey Cup team. If successful, he will become only the third-ever Trinitarian to do so. Jeremy Dykgraaff MIC Tennis CIS selection James McCabe (10st) 3rds And 4ths The 3rds were keen to redeem their reputations after last week and I must congratulate the doubles pairings of Alexander Valiozis (11Yo)/Justin Sleiman (11Ta) and Nicholas Field (11WH)/Jason Wu (11Ho) who Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 20 of 51

21 played with great determination and concentration, showing fleetness of foot, daring of shot choice and reminding the spectators why energetic, hard fought, competitive doubles is so exciting. Alex and Nikki backed up in the Singles and overpowered their opponents, again with some thrilling tennis. Unfortunately the team was not quite able to win the day s encounter, but are to be commended for their fighting spirit and increased determination. The 4ths, on the other hand, were lacklustre and struggled to find the necessary form, commitment and determination which have characterised their match play of earlier rounds. Lachlan Sleiman (11Ta) and Quentin Da (11Du) competed quite well against tough opposition in the Singles, but the unforced error count ultimately hindered their efforts. All players will need to prepare themselves mentally before taking to the court tomorrow, and remind themselves of the value of persistence and tenacity. Jessica Spratt 3rds and 4ths Coach 10As And 10Bs Last Saturday marked the reverse fixture against Barker. After a long drive to the Barker courts on a warm morning, the boys struggled to get up for the early start. This showed in the As' doubles going down 0-6 and 4-6. After a short break and some needed rest, the boys got stuck into their singles matches. Despite some hardfought matches, the boys just couldn't turn their luck around, continuing to struggle to get a result. Despite some disappointing results, special mention should go to Aryan Rawal (10Mu). Also despite a 3-6 loss, there was some great tennis played and was entertaining to watch. Overall, Barker were just way too strong, winning the fixture 6 sets to 0. With the As out in quick style, the Bs were there to prove that they weren't going to be pushed down without a fight. Despite a tough start in doubles losing 1-6 and 2-6, Alexander Mallis (10Sc) came out strongly and led the comeback fight for the Bs with a 6-3 victory. Splitting the next two sets would have Barker lead 3-2 going into the last singles. It was up to Daniel Mircevski (10St) to tie the fixture. Despite a great performance and a 6-2 victory, unfortunately the Bs fell just short, losing on games. Credit must go to the players though for fighting hard and not giving up after the doubles. Brendon Bechara 10As and 10Bs Coach 9As And 9Bs Unfortunately, the home fixture against Barker on the weekend mirrored very closely the result in the away Round 2 last year. The Barker boys dominated in the singles, and despite a very close match between Werner Porath (9WH) and his opposition, Trinity lost all the singles sets. Our highlight of the weekend s tennis was a very pleasing win in the doubles. Richard Collins (9Mu) and Luka Saxena (9He) combined very effectively and defeated the Barker pair 6,3. In the 9Bs Trinity gained two sets through forfeits, but this still did not give our team a sufficient advantage to win the fixture. Trinity performed better in the doubles, but the singles were a very one-sided affair. Let s hope we can bounce back ready for St Aloysius on Saturday. William Henry 9As and 9Bs Coach 8As And 8Bs This week's fixture was an away game for our boys as they were faced with the might of Barker. The As commenced and from the very start it was a grind as the boys of Hornsby threw all they had at the boys in Green. Both our doubles pairings were given extremely tough assignments as Spyrodon Konidaris (8Sc) and Joshua Marcos (8Fo) battled with all their strength only to lose 2-6, while the exact same outcome was recorded for their teammates, Christian Bieri (8Yo) and Josh Alha (8Ho), who also lost 2-6. It was not meant to be for our boys as all singles matches also fell the way of Barker. The results included a savage 0-6 loss for Spyrodon, a 2-6 defeat for Joshua, a gutsy performance from Christian that also ended at 2-6 and an unfortunate 4-6 loss for Josh as he fell away right at the end. Barker therefore walked away with a dominant 6-0 win as they look to be the favourites for this year's premiership. The story was very similar for the Bs. Noah Glynn (8WJ) and Zade El Husseini (8Fo) were outclassed to the tune of 1-6 but their teammates, Lachlan Wolfe (8St) and James Perkin (8Yo), played some of their best tennis of the season as they chipped away all morning, only to lose 4-6. Noah, the team's captain, played a very impressive set as he continues his fine form, winning 6-4 while Lachlan took his match to a tiebreaker where he was unfortunately defeated, James' opponent handed him a 1-6 loss and Zade was never able to get into the match, being defeated 2-6. Just like the As, it was a harsh loss which is never a great way to start the weekend, Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 21 of 51

22 but the boys are improving week in and week out which is great to see. Harrison Gai 8As and 8Bs Coach 7As And 7B On a warm afternoon down at Haberfield Tennis Centre the year 7As came out onto the courts fired up to win. The first pairing of doubles was done and dusted in under 20 minutes, Max Knauer (7Ho) and George Nicholas (7WJ) wiping their opponents off the court 6-0, shortly after Liam Wingrave (7Ar) and Gabriel Simones Peixeiro (7Sc) came off with another convincing win 6-2. After they raised a sweat both winning 6-0 playing some exceptional tennis, Gabriel s match was a lot closer and by some very long and intense rallies managed to find the win. George played a fantastic match, unfortunately going down to a very strong Barker opponent. The year 7Bs also had a great win against Barker. Alex Runciman (7Yo) and Aneesh Nagaratnam (7Yo) played their doubles match together and they did not disappoint, playing some strong tennis to beat their opponents 6-2. In their singles both boys showed some great skill, Alex winning 6-0 and Aneesh 6-1. Joseph Cantlon (7Du) and Adam Bahmad (7Ho) unfortunately went down in their doubles match in a thrilling tiebreaker wherein the pair showed some amazing talent and some great points. Joseph played very well in his singles, but yet again went down in a tie-breaker. Adam won his singles match quite convincingly, playing some very good tennis. After a tough defeat last week, the Year 7s showed they have the ability to play at a very high level. 24 Volleyball vs Barker Trinity Defeated Barker 3-0 (25-6, 25-7, 25-12) Barker returned to the volleyball season with their classic enthusiasm and an eager readiness. However, they proved no match for the mighty 1st VI. The thrilling first set saw the return of the traditional serving streak from Calvin Li (12Ar), who, with his crafty float serve and strategic placement managed to control the set with very few lost points. This is a case where the scores truly do not represent the intensity of the game, where Alec Mackenzie (11WJ), despite coming straight from a game of basketball, managed to spike ball after ball into the Barker defence in the second set, and helped maintain the tight point control held by Trinity. The third and last set saw a strengthening of Barker morale and a brave comeback from the opposition. However, Trinity managed to hold their own and close out the game, especially thanks to leadership from team defensive specialist Eliot Kern (12WJ). Special mention should also go to Piers Connolly (12Ar), whose ever-improving setting helped the intimidating front court players like left-hander Benny Ouyang (12Ke) score several crucial points throughout the game. Overall, an extremely convincing win from the Trinity side; a very good place to be at this point in the season. Ollie Arkell (12WJ) First VI Captain Trinity Defeated Barker 2-0 (25-11, 25-12) Following last week s triumph, a confident Trinity Second team built a solid lead in the beginning of the first set. Strong yet consistent spiking from the team pulled Trinity further ahead. Special mention must go to Ethan Gunaratnam (12Ar) for always hitting into the deadly zone, winning us many points. A lapse in concentration lost the Seconds a few points, but wall-like defence from Thirds' cameo Ben Powell (9Mu) brought the team through to win the first set. Losing the first 4 points in the second set, the team saw the importance of good serving and composed receiving. Aidan Yeoh s (12Sc) amazing float serves epitomized this as he gave the team the concentration we needed to pull through and win the set. Seeing this display of talent and dedication against Barker means that with further training, this team can reach new heights. William Xie (12Fo) 2nd VI Captain Barker Defeated Trinity 2-0 (25-22, 25-21) The Third VI were excited for their first round back after the long summer holidays. By no surprise the Thirds were a little rusty to start. The start of the first set against Barker looked promising, being in the lead thanks to great communication and setting from Ben Powell (9Ho) and David Gabriel (9Hi), but this lead was short lived. Barker managed to close the gap and get in front when the Thirds lost a couple of key players. The Thirds had trouble getting back to the way they finished off last term, especially with Barker's unique style of play, which caused Barker to take the first set. The second set was quite the same with Trinity not exactly ready for every ball. The Thirds switched on right near the end of the second set, but it was too late for the team to come back even with some great setting from Oscar Van Hal (9Mu) and some great attacking hits from Jack Braga (9Du). Even with this the Thirds VI were too late and let Barker get away with this victory. Taylor Miller (11Yo) 3rd VI Captain Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 24 of 51

27 Water Polo vs Knox 1st VII Vs Knox Won 10-8 It was an exciting match where our Trinity athletes demonstrated character and won a difficult game against a very strong opponent after being behind at half-time. Jacob Gadiel (12Mu) was on fire, scoring two goals. He was ably supported by Sam Yip (12La) with three goals. George Fournaris (12Hi), Tristan Glanznig (10Ta) and Kai Young (10We) scored a goal each. 2nd VII Vs Shore Lost 5-10 This was always going to be a difficult game for Trinity against Shore 1sts. However, we did ourselves few favours by not having a full team at the pool in time for our pre-game preparation. Shore had one player who dominated the game, scoring six of their goals and we were clearly unable to defend against his shooting prowess. Best for Trinity were Matthew Moore (11Ke) and Fergus McCrory (11Du) who both gave a wholehearted effort. A big thanks to Oliver Buchanan (11Sc) and Matthew Robertson (9Du) who filled in for missing players. 3rd VII Vs Knox Won 12-7 The 3 rd VII continued their winning streak 12-7 against Knox. Thomas Lambert (12Fo) scored five goals, Oliver Buchanan (11Sc) and Mackenzie Gavin (12Hi) two apiece and Hugh Stonier (12Ar), Matthew Yazbek (12Yo) and Tyson Street (12WJ) one goal each. 16A Vs Knox Lost 3-4 That match could and should have been won. The team did not convert at least five goal scoring opportunities and lost by a one goal margin. The goal scorers for Trinity were Lewis Dobbin (10Du), Ben Blades (10We) and Flynn Meagher (10Hi). 16B Vs Knox Lost 1-2 Another close game for the U16Bs, losing 2 1 to Knox. Sam Swadling (10Mu) proved versatile in the pool using his speed to attack and defend in equal measure. Rory Martin (10Du) scored our only goal after a coordinated attack during the fourth quarter, while Thomas Bozionelos (10Ta) and Sebastien Papadopoulos (9He) also played well. 15A Vs Knox Lost 10-6 This was Trinity s first loss of the season in what was a very difficult game. The Knox team could all swim very well, were far more physical and appeared far more experienced than Trinity. We did not get the large number of counter attacking opportunities we have come to expect and found scoring difficult. The opposition s physicality and team work nullified much of our set play. Our defence was tested and found wanting in terms of physicality and body positioning, permitting Knox too many easy goals. For Trinity, Sam Hohne (9Ke) tried hard at centre forward and scored three goals, Euan Germanos (9He) chimed in with two goals while Matt Robertson (9Du) was strong in defence. 28 14A Vs Knox Won 17-3 It was a competent team performance with good tactical structures both in defence and attack. The goals by the Trinity players were scored after counter-attack and collective set-attack actions. Lucas Young (7We) marked his first game for the team with seven goals to his credit. Lewis Potter (8Fo) scored two. Leonard Yoon (8St), Jake Varone (8He), Luke de Lisle (8Ke) and Harrison Evans (8La) each scored one for a good win. Well done! 14B Vs Knox Won by forfeit 13A Vs Knox Won 11-5 Trinity were in complete control of the game from the very start with Lucas Young (7We), Mitchell Chen (7Ar) and Cooper Twine (7Mu) leading the way. Lucas was outstanding in both attack and defence. Harrison Ryan (7Ta) and Miles Angus (7WH) each scored two goals. It was a little disappointing to allow Knox to score five goals. We must always mark our player and not allow easy goals. 13B Vs Knox Lost 1-2 It was a low-scoring match. Most of the Trinity boys are beginning to learn about Water Polo as a new sport and fought hard, but lost by a small margin. Johnathan Manikis (7La) was our goal scorer. 29 Golf Round 7, Strathfield Golf Club Thankfully, after a number of frustrating rounds, we finally managed to field a full Golf Team to take on St Joseph s at Strathfield last Saturday. We were thrilled that Jack Barter (8St) replied to my desperate plea in the Daily Notices last week that we urgently needed another golfer for the remainder of the summer season. Jack was quick to put up his hand in our hour of need! He was exceptionally nervous on his first outing on the fairways for the School, yet he played some fine golf for much of the match. Inconsistency cost him the end. However, the Joeys crowd was certainly slightly dismayed as Jack was 1up in the match after three holes, holing a 20+ foot monster on the 3rd for a square! Unfortunately, the fairy-tale start didn t quite eventuate as he lost on the 13th, 6 and 5. We are thrilled he has joined us and with more experience and a little practice he will be a force to be reckoned with in coming years. Anyone know a decent coach? Trinity golfing stalwart Ejun Choi (12Ho) was back and despite having not spent much time on the course recently, (pesty HSC), he fought extremely hard, taking on a fine golfer from Joey's. Unfortunately, Ejun lost narrowly on the last, 1down. We certainly need Sebastian Sara (8Du) on our team. Despite once again being hard to please, he fought superbly in his match. He was at one stage 4up in his contest and to his opponent s credit, he worked back into the battle to be all square with three holes remaining. Sebastian managed to win both the 17th and 18th to secure a fabulous win, 2up! For me the best result of the day for Trinity came from the tenacious way Sebastian Ilett (11Sc) went about his match. It was a war of attrition early on and at one stage he was 3down. However, to his credit and to everyone s delight, Sebastian had things squared-up by the 12th. He was then 2up after the 14th and was still 2up with three to play. He looked seriously unbelievably nervous and excited all at once. The smile glanced regularly from under his cap was virtually one of disbelief as he found himself in foreign territory. There was a chance he was going to choke as he lost 16, then 17. Things were all-square playing the last. He opponent was also under pressure and faltered as Sebastian claimed the victory with a conservative bogey, with a shot, to seal his first victory in the Green and White! Smiles all round there were, even the Joeys coach was thrilled for Sebastian! A most fitting way to finish a fabulous afternoon on the fairways with these fine young men! We host at midday at Massey Park tomorrow if you are keen to be a member of the gallery! Good golfing, Michael Spratt MIC Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 29 of 51

34 EVENTS Closing Sunday taking up with modernism: The Akky van Ogtrop Collection On Saturday 17 February, Akky van Ogtrop gave a floor talk about pieces from her collection of works on paper currently being exhibited in the Delmar Gallery. Akky migrated from Holland to Australia in the 1970s. As well as her husband, she brought with her a burgeoning collection of artists books, master prints and rare ephemera from the European avant-garde. The legacy of this movement was far-reaching, being felt in the USA and in countries as distant both geographically and culturally as Australia and Japan. It was an enormous pleasure to see works on paper by significant European artists such as Erich Buchholz, Cesar Domela Nieuwenhuis and Lajos Kassak, accompanied by pieces by influential New York artist Robert Motherwell, from German-born and longtime Japanese resident Jörg Schmeisser and from contemporary Australian artists such as Robert Jacks and Allan Mittelman. Akky s anecdotes and recollections of her life from early childhood in Holland as she grew up in a family environment rich with music and art, and her conversational exchanges with curator Catherine Benz and interested members of the public, added another dimension to the experience. There was just enough information about the techniques of printmaking (such as woodblock, etching and screenprinting) to further enhance the appreciation of these works without losing sight of their artistic and aesthetic sensibilities. Akky s stories served to remind the audience of how movements such as the avant-garde were once radical but are now able to be widely appreciated. With the benefit of personal, historical and social perspectives, provided in this case by someone whose knowledge of and affection for the pieces on display was almost tangible, the exhibition was able to bring to life a sample of works from a bold and exciting period in art history. 39 Mathematics Discovery Evening! Wednesday 7th March 2018 Trinity Grammar School Mathematics Club in conjunction with the University of Technology Sydney is pleased to present the following special event: Come and learn about the opportunities to expand your horizons in Mathematics and its Applications! Mathematics is a universal part of human culture. It helps us to recognise patterns and understand the world around us. Mathematics plays a vital and often unseen role in many aspects of modern life. Business and industry need workers who can solve real-world problems, explain their thinking to others, identify and analyse trends in data, and use modern technology. The University of Technology Sydney prides itself on producing Mathematicians who are capable of achieving this goal for business and industry. The evening will consist of the following workshop sessions: Workshop on Mobius Maths: There is more to maths than you might realise the graphics in animations and video games have improved thanks to maths, maths can make or break a building design, maths can even be used to tell a love story! In this workshop we will cover these examples and more in an engaging look at some of the unexpected applications of maths. Creativity Counts: Is mathematics only about blindly applying rules and formulae? No! Contrary to popular belief, creativity and mathematics are very much linked. Through hands-on activities, you will see that mathematics makes use of creativity. You will also experience that simple mathematics can be used to great effect when creatively applied. No textbooks, all brains! DETAILS Wednesday 7th March 2018 at 6:00pm-8:00pm (Refreshments will also be served) at Trinity Grammar School, Science Block Room 2.3 Students and parents are welcome to attend this special event!
