Today our students have been excellent given the extreme weather conditions, despite many hoping for a day playing in the snow! Please note the details sent out to all parents this week regarding the arrangements for school closure in the event of snow. Last week all schools across the country received the information regarding the updated performance data for the 2018 examination season. Kineton High School has improved on 2017 results in all key performance measures, with an overall P8 (progress 8) figure of 0.15, a significant move upwards, so staff are rightfully pleased with the outcomes of the new GCSE specifications which are graded from 1-9. There are some real areas of strength across the school in terms of academic attainment and progress. Notably the GCSE Maths results which put the Maths team in the Outstanding category for the progress of its students (0.50). Girls at the school are doing brilliantly too at GCSE with excellent progress and attainment scores in We are working hard to support and challenge our boys who achieve well but not as highly as girls at present. This is a national picture that we are addressing by exploring aspects of the curriculum; teaching and learning strategies and the ways in which we group and set students. To ensure that we are consistent in the classrooms across the school, a key strategy we ve adopted is the introduction of the Kineton Constants, our set of non-negotiables or standards for every lesson. These have been written by teachers to support students with expectations, routines and establishing challenge in learning. I ve dropped into a few lessons today, including GCSE Maths, PE, RM and Year 7 Literacy and seen these in practice, as well as chatting to sixth formers working independently on their A Level studies. 2 Day Events Ten: Head s message All the Fun of the (book) Fair The Scholastic Book Fair held last week was a great success, with students visiting the fair and buying books during English lessons, as well as break and lunchtimes. There was a great selection of books, plus the ever popular posters and stationery items. The most popular books were Tom Gates, Overwatch and Fortnite, which we had to order extra copies of. We were able to buy 350 worth of new books for the LRC using the commission earned, many of which were requested by students. A big thank you to all our Student Librarians who helped with the Fair. We ran a poster competition for year 7 students, with the top 5 entries receiving a 5 voucher each to spend at the Fair. Our team of Student Librarians helped to judge the competition and the winners were Xanthippe, Grace, Evie, Emily and Elsie, who all spent a great deal of time and effort to produce some stunning posters. Congratulations girls!

3 Day Events Ten: Head s message Young Carers Awareness Week In PSHE this week students in Year 8 have been learning about what life is like for Young Carers through a presentation from Amy at Warwickshire Young Carers Project. Staff from our Student Services team also ran games at break and lunchtime and raised for this very deserving organisation. For further information on the work and support they offer please visit their website Trips Drama Trip to London On Thursday 24 th January 43 GCSE Drama students accompanied staff to London to see Mischief Theatre Company s The Play That Goes Wrong. Students were enthralled in the comedic haphazard narrative that saw set falling down around actors and unconscious characters being replaced with stage hands. Students thoroughly enjoyed the performance, which they will be writing about in their written exam in the summer. They were a delight and a real credit to the school. Miss Loveridge

4 Day Sports Ten: News Head s message Cross Country Congratulations to Abbie in Year 12 who came 5th in the Warwickshire Schools Cross Country and has qualified to represent Warwickshire at the English Schools Cross Country Championships a fantastic achievement! Indoor Athletics This week students took part in the South Warwickshire Indoor Athletics at Alcester Grammar School. Year 7 and 8 girls competed on Monday 28th January with the Year 7 team finishing 6th and the Year 8 team in 8th place. On Tuesday 29th January it was the Year 7 and 8 boys turn; Year 7 finished joint 2nd and Year 8 were 4th. Every single student gave it 100% showing superb resilience and teamwork in encouraging and cheerleading from the side of the track. Football Our Year 8 boys team have had 2 matches in the last fortnight; on Thursday 24th January they played against Kenilworth and Wednesday 30th January saw them take on Southam College. The teams work rate and commitment were outstanding despite not securing a win at either match. 5 Day Sports Ten: News Head s message Netball We ve had a fabulous week of Netball with Years 7-11 playing matches and seeing us claim 4 wins and 1 draw! It s also been a brilliant week for Nicole in Year 10 who has confidently umpired two games well done! Year 7 This game was against Sibford and went very well with a win of 3-0 to Kineton. It was a great match with both sides playing hard. Player of the match was Bea. Year 8 This was again a fair match. In order to add to their depth of experience Mrs Green made all players play out of their first positions. The final score was 7-5 to Kineton. Year 9 This was a really tight match with both teams evenly matched. With a half time score of 3-3 it was all to play for. Kineton took the lead in the second half only for a last minute goal by Sibford to confirm a draw. The final score was 5-5. Player of the match was Annabelle. Year 10 Both teams played with dogged determination. The formidable pair of Nicole and Sophie soon got four goals, only for Sibford to respond with three. In the second half the defence was tight and with some fabulous interceptions by Kitty. Sibford only managed to score one more goal. The final score was 9-4 to Kineton. Player of the match went to Hermione. Year 11 The first match was against Sibford 6 th form. This was an end to end tussle with the centre court doing much of the work. Emily worked steadily all match to support both attack and defence. Anastasia s accurate shooting put their defence under pressure, whilst Willow got some perfectly timed interceptions. The final score was 9-10 to Sibford. In the second match the strength of our attack was no match for Sibford. Kineton quickly pulled ahead with the goals and went on to a comfortable 7-1 victory. Player of the match was Anastasia.

Please be advised that, although the Council s address is a secure one, this method may not be secure depending on your provider. To avoid any delay in getting your pass printed next year, please send a photo to us as soon as possible. 10 Leave of Absence During Term Time The Supreme Court recently reached a decision in the case of Platt v Isle of Wight Council which has clarified the law on unauthorised leave, including holidays, during term time. The parents of children of compulsory school age are required to ensure that they attend school on a regular basis. The Supreme Court has made clear that attending school regularly means that the children must attend school on every day that they are required to do so. As such, the parents of any child who is absent from school without authorisation for any length of time are likely to be considered as committing an offence under s444 of the Education Act Head Teachers retain the ability to authorise leave in accordance with the Education (Pupil Registration) (England) Regulations When considering such requests for a leave of absence, the school are obliged to act within the law. Head Teachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances relating to the application. If the leave is granted, head teachers are able to determine the number of school days a child can be absent for. It is for the Head Teacher to decide what is exceptional and it is at their discretion if the circumstances warrant the leave to be granted. The school can only consider Leave of Absence requests which are made by the resident parent. Each application for a leave of absence will be considered on a case by case basis and on its own merits. Where applications for leave of absence are made in advance and refused, the child will be required to be in school on the dates set out in the application. If the child is absent during that period, it will be recorded as an unauthorised absence, which may result in legal action being taken against the parent(s), by way of a Fixed Penalty Notice. Student Absence Procedure If a student is absent, please call the 24 hour Absence Line daily on and leave a brief message stating their name, tutor group and reason. Failure to make an application for leave in advance can also result in a Fixed Penalty Notice being issued to the parent(s). All matters of unauthorised absence relating to a Leave of Absence will be referred to the Warwickshire Attendance Service, part of Warwickshire County Council. It is important to note, Fixed Penalty Notices are issued to each parent of each absent child, (for example 2 children and 2 parents, means each parent will receive 2 invoices in the amount of 120 each, totalling 240 for both children, this is reduced to 60 per child if paid within 21 days). Where a Fixed Penalty Notice is not paid within the required timeframe as set out on the notice, the matter will be referred to Warwickshire County Council s Legal Services to consider instigating criminal proceedings under S444 Education Act Fixed Penalty Notices are issued in accordance with Warwickshire County Council s Code of Conduct for Penalty Notices. We greatly appreciate parental support to reduce the total amount of days lost due to holidays. We are committed to working in partnership with you to enable your child to reach their academic targets and to support their social development. For this to happen we need to keep individual attendance as high as possible - we all need to play our part. Your child s progress academically as well as socially is our shared priority. Warwickshire Secondary School pupils recorded 8,895 half day sessions of absence due to holiday in the Autumn/Spring term during academic year 2017/18. This is an increase of 1,816 on the previous year. Medical/Dental Appointment If a student will not be present during morning registration due to a medical/dental appointment, please provide Student Services with written notice of the appointment prior to the event.
