Joke of the Week Three sons left home, went out on their own and prospered. Getting back together, they discussed the gifts they were able to give their elderly mother for Mother s Day. The first said, "I built a big house for our mother." The second said," I sent her a Mercedes with a driver." The third smiled and said, "I've got you both beat. You know how Mum enjoys the Bible, and you know she can't see very well. I sent her a brown parrot that can recite the entire Bible. It took 20 monks in a monastery 12 years to teach him. I had to pledge to contribute $100, a year for 10 years, but it was worth it. Mum just has to name the chapter and verse, and the parrot will recite it." Soon thereafter, Mum sent out her letters of thanks: "Milton," she wrote the first son, "The house you built is so huge. I live in only one room, but I have to clean the whole house." "Marvin," she wrote to another, "I am too old to travel. I stay home all the time, so I never use the Mercedes. And the driver is so rude!" "Dearest Melvin," she wrote to her third son, "You were the only son to have the good sense to know what your mother likes. That chicken was delicious." 4 Round 4 Match Reports Auskick sponsored by : Round 4 was the second home game of the season for our Auskick teams with a match against the Hawks. Our match day got off to a great start with so many of our Auskick families assisting with warm up skills stations. This kept our group numbers low and kids actively engaged with the activity. This week, it was fantastic to see improvement in our game play, with many of our players looking to kick to the advantage of a team mate and team mates without the ball putting themselves into good position to receive the ball. Our coaches were excited to see this improvement! Congratulations to our Auskickers receiving sports awards this round - Blake, Ryan, Jeff, Lachlan, Mitchell and Noah! Also this Friday night, an excited group of Miranda Bombers Auskickers will be playing half time Auskick at the Swan v Hawks match, ANZ stadium. Keep an eye out for us at the game! Go Bombers! 5 Under 10 sponsored by : Miranda vs Heathcote. Another strong team performance from the u/10s this week against Heathcote. Playing in conditions where one end was favoured by a strong breeze, our captain for the day, Ronan, lost the toss so we ran into the breeze in the first quarter. Nevertheless the boys started strongly but we were unable to convert a number of scoring opportunities. Although we were having the best of the play, Heathcote turned it around midway through the quarter with a couple of goals with the wind. The second quarter was pretty even and we used the breeze well to even up the game. The third quarter saw probably the best quarter we have played all year. I challenged the boys to keep Heathcote goalless in the quarter and although they didn't quite manage it, they counted the one goal they conceded with a fine team goal into the wind. In the last quarter we kept up the pressure with the wind and recorded some fine goals. Individually, there were many great efforts. Ronan capped off a fine captain's game with a goal. Josh took several good marks and kicked two great goals in the last quarter, including a set shot from the forward pocket boundary that came back beautifully with the wind. Seb was everywhere collecting many possessions and worked hard to keep the ball in our forward line. He also showed great courage to stay on the field after a very hard knock. Will was strong over the ball and kicked a 30m goal using the breeze nicely. Blake competed hard as usual and had a number of contested possessions and a goal. Rory provided a strong target in the midfield and half forward and was unlucky with a couple of shots at goal. Mitch was typically hard at the contest. Brayden put his hand up in the first quarter to play for Heathcote so that we had even numbers and was just about their best player in that quarter. When he came back to us his trademark hard running was again a feature. After a week out last week ill, Bailey had a fine game, using the ball particularly well. Liam won our award today for a fantastic game where he continually won the hard ball and got off some good handballs as well as scoring a goal. Noah B had his best game in u/10s including taking a strong mark in the forward pocket and centering the ball to the top of the goal square to create a scoring opportunity. He also played a quarter for Heathcote and played well for them too! Theo also had his best game in u10s and created a number if scoring opportunities. Noah G worked hard and provided good drive from half back when playing in the back line. Levi, followed up his great game last week with another strong performance. Flynn worked hard getting at the bottom of packs and tackling hard. James made good space in the forward line and stuck close to his man in defence holding the ball up a number of times to stop scoring opportunities. Overall another fine team performance, our disposal improved markedly from last week and the boys are really starting to develop a great team spirit. Page 5

Under 11 sponsored by : Miranda Bangor Not so long ago, on a football field, far, far away... Maybe it was the excitement of celebrating international Star Wars day, or that a Wookiee scared them out of bed, but the players arrived with somewhat more vitality and zest than the previous week and this showed on the ground and in their performance. The game was strongly affected by a four goal breeze blowing toward the East, which was, to be blunt, as welcome at the footy as Jar Jar Binks. In the first term, Bangor kicked with the wind and our defenders had to work harder than Darth Vader s helmet cleaners, to keep us in the game. Fortunately, not only did the backs do their job, but using teamwork like R2D2 and C3PO, the Bombers were able to move the ball forward against the wind and score a crucial goal or two. In the second period, with the breeze at their backs, the team took advantage and thus we had a half time lead of a few goals. The second half was, ironically, akin to a sequel of the first. Bangor using the breeze in the third quarter, put in place their dastardly plans and built themselves a strong position to repel the rebels, sorry, Bombers, going into the last quarter. But like the Empire, Bangor were unable to stop the Bombers and in the end we managed to secure a much needed win. It was an excellent team effort, with each and every player contributing to the performance; Young Padawan s Matt and Jack, in their first and second games respectively, equipped themselves brilliantly. Corey and Jasper, were as strong as Wookiees in the ruck Sebastian, Luke and Adrian combined like a good X-wing squadron to repel Bangor s attacks in the centre. Harry G, showed dash and daring like Han Solo all over the park. Franklin and Jet were like Yoda, controlling those about them and calmly going about their business. Harry P, seemed to be using the force like a young Skywalker. Control the ball and his opponents and ending the game with more goals than Bangor Hadrian and Xavier were like Obi Wan controlling Bangor s attackers ( This is not the Sherrin your looking for ). Xavier did well when moved to the middle of the park and Hadrian pinched a game sealing goal in the final quarter. Tex, Peter and Rhys were as tough as clone troopers, launching attacks off their long kicks, including an impressive banana goal by Rhys on the run. What the last two games have shown is that, in this competition, each player must approach each game confidently and with focus. The previous week we were lack lustre and second to the ball, this week we were more focussed and came away with a win. Whether the team succeeds or fails will be up to the players. If they wish to win, they can, but only if they practice and want to win. Use the force Bombers. Use the force. Anthony Obi Wan Vialobi Page 6

Under 13 sponsored by : Miranda Penshurst Round 4 saw the mighty Bombers playing at home against Penshurst who knocked us out of the semis in That was a tight game and only decided in the last quarter and this game mirrored that game almost perfectly. This time though pleasingly, it was a different result and the Bombers came out on top for a great win. We played the full field in its entirety and it was a good test of the team from both a skills and fitness perspective. The first three quarters were tight with the score line evidencing this. At quarter time it was 1-0 to the Bombers, at half time time, 2-2 and then three quarter time it was 8-8 and all even. The Bombers then kicked away in the last quarter and we scored 4 goals and 2 points and kept Penshurst scoreless. The fitness was a good test as we kept running in all four quarters where Penshurst fell away in the last but we also need to learn some lessons on how to play Aussie Rules footy when the wind was playing a factor. In the second quarter we made it too easy for Penshurst to defend when we had the wind as we kicked to the corner of the defensive when we needed to attack from the other side of the field. We also did not show the same enthusiasm and effort to get to the ball first as we had in the first three games of the season. We need to learn to consistently bring that effort and determination to every game we play and we will then be a better team for it. It was a good tough win though and again our defence was superb. Jay, Jake, Aidan M-A, Nick and Tim E were all rock solid as they always are and again repelled many Penshurst attacks and turned defence to our advantage. Nick kept up his good form from the previous week and Tim E judged the ball brilliantly in his defensive role. A highlight I wanted to share was one stage in the third quarter when Penshurst had the wind and the ball cleared over our defence and three Penshurst players were left to chase the ball with Jay the only Bomber around and he have them a good 10 metre start but his speed and determination saw him get to the ball first in an unbelievable effort and saved another goal. Well done to all the defensive guys. Harro, Logan, Trav, Aidan S worked tirelessly out of the centre and on the wings. Not one of them wanted a break and kept applying pressure through each quarter their coverage of the ground was good, great effort guys. Aidan S especially played well, he went in after the ball and kept pressure on Penshurst and what also made me proud was how he ignored some niggle that some of the Penshurst players were targeting him with and got on with game. Good work Aidan. Special mention has to go to Tim Manchester who covered the ruck role through all four quarters of the game for the first time ever. He rucked brilliantly and won most of the rucks and looked like he had been doing it for years. Great effort Tim. The forwards did really well throughout the game. Jarrod played well and continued his good form as did Nathan and Raf and Dutchy at centre half forward took some great marks and kicked a couple of good goals. He have good options for the ball to be kicked to him. Cooper was really good. He was attacking the ball and kicked two great goals. His first goal was superb with a diving kick at a loose ball amongst five or six players and his effort and determination was great. Well done Cooper. Keep up the good work. Special mention also goes to Mitch and Harry who came to the game and supported the team even though they were not playing. Great work guys - that shows great team spirit. Page 7

Many thanks to all the supporters/parents who came to cheer on the team. My thanks especially to Lyn Harvey for a great job managing the team and to Brendan, Phil and Matt for being runners, Raymond for boundary umpire and Ben Challen for doing a great job as goal umpire. Nicky Bennie did a great job time keeping and Mick as Ground Manager did well. To all the parents who completed canteen/bbq duties, it was very much appreciated. Go the Bombers! 9 Under 15 sponsored by : Miranda Heathcote/ Bangor Today we saw the emergence of another contender for the flag, the Hawks played a great brand of footy, contesting hard and running with intent on the ball and for each other. We were in the game right up to half time and accounted well for ourselves in the last quarter but let the game get away from us in the third. Three quarters of good footy shows even with a number of players out we can still be competitive but we need to put together four quarters. We saw some great play from our backs to stem and pressure our oppositions scoring opportunities through the game and could have had a real blow out but their intent was solid. This weeks report is backs focussed as these guys saw most of the footy and deserve all accolades. Henry, played back pocket all day, his attack on the ball and his defensive work on his opponents was exemplary considering how new he is to footy. He is a player who stands out at training for his work rate and it was great to see this work rate in a game including marks and tackles. Jack played a perfect last quarter in back pocket and was accountable the whole game. We saw his attack on the ball reminiscent of years gone by and his work rate to get to the last line of defence and contest against a much larger forward showed his courage and team commitment. Julian played a great game at full back, with many chances to contest Julian showed he can play tough footy deep back. His disposals were smart and skilful hitting targets with his kicks, marking dangerous deep kicks and tackling opponents. Riley was meant to play on the forward line but very early in the second quarter we needed him to move to CHB and shut down a dangerous forward. He did this really well pressuring his opponent and managed many possessions off half back taking some great marks making his opponent accountable. Chris against his old team played tough and accountable footy on the half back line through the game contesting and bringing the ball to ground well as is needed from a tall half back. Lachlan and Jaxson both added their speed and skill to the half back line through the game contesting hard and finding the ball. Our Centres Joel, Che, Brandon, Matt, Ethan and Anthony all rotated off half back and the wings at various times through the game and worked hard to stem our oppositions scoring and add run, however most of these players were pushing through niggling injuries due to a heavy week of representative commitments and their run was understandably down on previous games. Still with injury all were able to do some amazing things. Brandons face plant mark at half back showed his commitment to his team and his goal a result of his gut running. Che disposed today highly efficiently especially forward. Che must have kicked 5 or more perfect passes to the half forward line. Joel was great off half back and steamed through packs adding run. Anthony courageously continued on running and contesting with a sore hand and ankle. Matt and Ethan both sustained injuries going hard at the ball and working for their team. David and Ryan rucked all day rotating forward and showed good development as ruck men, contesting rucks well against a much taller opponent and manning up or presenting when necessary. Page 9

Our forwards, Hunter, Braydon, Harry, Jackson, Lachlan, Joe, Riley, Jaxson, Joel, Chris and our rucks David and Ryan worked hard. With limited opportunities these guys posted a competitive score in the first half but were unable to keep us in the game through the third quarter. There were highlights, Joe grabbed some good marks and disposed creatively collecting a goal. Harry was up and about getting to the right spots to rove the crumbs. Hunter took some good marks and kicked a nice long range set shot. Joel got goal of the day spinning the ball on its end around from right to left for it to dribble through Rioli style. Although there were highlights our forwards were not able to hold the ball in the forward line or take advantage of opportunities often enough. Peter was a standout today playing outside his usual self. Off half back he contested and marked countlessly. The best a contest then tackle as his opponent ran onto the ball then pick up of the loose ball resulting in a kick to centre wing straight to his team mate. Peter showed today his footy smarts as a back man and backing up from last weeks outstanding last quarter at full forward it is very exciting to see a player performing week in, week out so highly. For his work today Peter received the Macdonalds award. This week Dom was unable to play due to injury, thanks to him though counting the 1 percent efforts of players. These are things that can go un-noticed but can be game changers. Things like tackles, shepherds, smothers, spoils and bumps. Our top 10 were Jaxson 3, Peter 4, Henry 4, Brandon 5, Anthony 5, Riley 6, Julian 7, Jack 8, Joel 8 and Che 10. Everyone got on the list for this so well done to all in the team. Goal kickers were Hunter, Brandon, Ryan, Joel and Joe all with singles to their names. Thanks to our hard working parents for boundary and goal umpiring and the hard work from the bench as well as so many involved with home game duties. For our supporters I am confident we can work on the areas needed to give a better result in the next clash. Go Bombers Cam Page 10

Under 17 sponsored by : Miranda Maroubra Our first ever outing against the Maroubra club found us goalless for 3 quarters and going down by 30 points, despite still being in the contest going into the final term. Surprisingly, we ve maintained our hold on second position on the ladder, thanks to other game results. Conor Soffe took away a well earned game day award for his consistent and gutsy efforts around the ground, leading effectively into space around the wing, setting up numerous attacking forays and generally giving his best effort from start to finish. Other highlights included: Justin Khaw s continued consistency in defence, putting in numerous courageous efforts to negate his opponents throughout the game, and feeding the ball effectively back up the ground. Brodie Gillespie s and Brayden Jamieson s strong efforts in defence, and streaming runs through the centreline at will impressive stuff boys, keep it up. Jesse Raabe s consistent involvement in the play, racking up an impressive contested possession tally. Thanks again to our volunteers on the day, Jenny O Leary on timekeeper duties, Neil Williamson in goals, Dave Crutchett on the boundary, and Chris Lienert on runner duties, as well as those on rostered ground duties. Go Bombers. Page 11
