2 Sapelo Hammock Golf Club February Newsletter 1354 Marshview Drive NE Shellman Bluff, GA From the GM: Snow! What a start to the new year. The past month brought us measurable snowfall, 9 additional days with frost to start the day and only 3 days reaching 70 degrees. Comparing that to last January where we did not have any morning frosts, 17 days that reached at least 70 and 3 days of 80+ degrees. Global warming is having an off year! The Social Committee has been hard at work planning events for the year. The 2018 Calendar of Events is included with both golf and social functions listed. This is subject to change and as new events are added, we will continue to update the events calendar on our website sapelohammockgolfclub.com. Again this month, we are asking for your help getting the word out and increase the number of eyes and golfers to Sapelo Hammock. We thank all of you who have, but for those who have not, please take a minute and look at this link. You will be reminded of the natural beauty and breathtaking vistas that surround us every day. 3 From the Course: Wow, what a winter it has been! The extreme cold and frost conditions have given us a completely dormant golf course. Currently this is the most dormant we have been in the last 5 years. So much so that some courses are spraying roundup course-wide for winter weeds, which is unheard of in this area. We will not be attempting this at Sapelo Hammock for the simple fact that it will delay spring green-up of the turf. I would rather get a head start on green-up than have any delay. With spring just around the corner, it is time to start implementing our program for this growing season. We will be applying our pre-emerge on Thursday, March 1 st. Pre-emerges are a bit of a misnomer. The chemicals do not prevent weeds from emerging, rather they create a barrier at the soil level. Once the young weeds emerge they take up the herbicide and die. This application is essential for weed control and the presentation of our course. If you have any questions about this practice or any other concerns, pleas feel free to contact me at or by at chankey@sapelohammockgolfclub.com. Once temperatures begin to rise the first areas to green up will be the putting greens, followed by tees, fairways and then finally the rough. The reason for this progression is the differences in soil temperature at the different heights of cut. The shorter the grass, the higher the soil temperature will be due to the warming by the sun. Taller grass actually shades the soil, delaying the warming process. My staff and I look forward to the warming season and are anxious to begin. 4 Sapelo News & Notes 2018 Handicap Program Thank you to those who have signed up for the 2018 handicap season. You have until the end of the month to sign up and be on the Sapelo Hammock Golf Club roster. The fee for the upcoming season will again be $30 per person. If you are interested in continuing this service or may want to establish a handicap, please let us know by February 26. Your fee may be paid in cash, check or billed to your member account. As a member club of the Georgia State Golf Association, along with the handicap service you will be entitled to all the benefits of membership in the GSGA. If you have any questions, or need any additional information about the service, please give us a call.
