2 Sapelo Hammock Golf Club June Newsletter 1354 Marshview Drive NE Shellman Bluff, GA From the GM: Summer is almost here and the recent rains and warmer weather has the golf course looking and playing great. Thanks to Chris and his staff for meeting the demands of the explosion in growth of grass and the superb conditions! We ve got a busy June ahead with a number of events for everyone starting with the 2 nd Annual NeSmith Couples Tournament on June 2. We have a tremendous field assembled for a fun filled two days. On June 3 we are pleased to be hosting a GSGA Play Day for the first time will be welcoming GSGA members from around the state to enjoy the day at Sapelo. June also means the first Junior Camp of the season on the 4 th 7 th. For those of you who could not make the June camp, our second Junior Camp will be July Come out and join the fun! Thank you to all of our committee s and the hard work they put in to continue to improve on all aspects of Sapelo Hammock Golf Club. In particular, the Marketing Committee has a report that may be accessed by clicking this link..\marketing Team Report for June Newsletter.docx. There have been a number of new events added to the clubs calendar so please make sure to check them out. With all of the extra work that our events both golf and social create, a special thanks to all of the owners, members, committee members and volunteers who continued to give so much toward the growth and success of the club, thank you. 3 From the Course: When I mentioned in last month s newsletter that the month of May was going to be our transition on the course, little did I know just how much it was about to change. We fertilized the entire course on May 10 th and a few days later it began to rain! To that point we were running almost a full 6 deficit on rainfall for the year. The rain we received in the last ½ of May along with tropical storm Alberto went a long way to catching us up. With a very limited budget, sandy soils, poor water quality and nematodes, we are very dependent on rainfall at Sapelo. As the rain goes, so goes the condition of the course. We have the good lord above to thank for blessing us with all the improved conditions. The golf course responded greatly and actually put us ahead of schedule for the years growing season. Winter weeds died, greens filled in and the fairways and rough really took off. So much so I am now applying growth regulators to fairways and greens. June will be a busy time for us on the course with tournaments, kids camp and aerification of the greens (more on that later). Our mowing heights will also be returning to normal. Good news for some, with the ball sitting up a little more in the fairways. Bad news for others, with a return to higher, thicker rough. I will make every attempt to keep the rough under control this season and with our new equipment it will be more consistent and uniform with a better quality of cut. 6 Sapelo Happenings CADDA Sapelo played host again this year for the 32 nd annual CADDA golf Tournament. What a nice day fort heir seminar, lunch, golf event and cocktail party. Thanks to the team of Jordy Evans, Lou Fuentes and Richard Fruge for preparing the wonderful lunch and hors d oeuvres after play. Where else are you going to get pheasant, duck and fresh caught fish for your outing Thanks guys! SEGIA Southeast Georgia Interclub Association Monday, May 21 Each May Sapelo hosts the SEGIA group for a day of fun and friendly competition. This year 96 players participated from 9 of the SEGIA member clubs and produced some great scoring. Lakeview Golf Club led the way with Teams finishing 1, 2. The group is off to Pine Forest for next month s event. Thanks for playing this year and we look forward to another great event next year!

7 McIntosh Academy Prom Saturday, May 5 What a pleasure it was to serve as the venue for this year s McIntosh Academy Senior Prom. The coordinating staff did a great job decorating and we were blessed with beautiful weather that allowed everyone to enjoy the back porch and the evening air. Thank you for allowing us to host your special event!
