The rainy cool weather had a big impact on play and February was a slow month at Columbia Country Club. Though it was still wet, March has been much improved and we are starting to see grass growing all over the place. It seems like regardless of what part of the country (world?) you live in Masters week kicks off the golf season. It is certainly true in the Southeast and you will see a lot more activity at your club starting in April. Like most clubs we budget a certain amount of revenue each year to be generated from hosting outside golf events. Our golf course is our most valuable asset and it is under used during the week. Last year we hosted 40 outside golf events 17 of which were held on Mondays our closed day. This year we have budgeted and booked 40 outside golf events, 23 of which will be held on Mondays. We don t plan on or need to book any more this year, but if some really great offer is presented we will certainly evaluate it. Hosting outside golf has been and will continue to be a key part of the Club s business plan. It is also worth noting that a large percentage of our membership leads come from people who say they are interested because they played in an event at our club. This is a great way to get Columbia Country Club more exposure in the community. The way we all welcome and host these events is a key factor in attracting new members. We also make our club available during Masters week through a couple of selected travel organizations. Guests can choose to play our course as part of a travel package as they stay in Columbia and attend the Masters. Last year we hosted 275 rounds, we have already booked 287 rounds this year. This year the majority of these guests will be visitors from Europe. This is a key week for our club, last year Masters week generated 14% of our total outside golf revenue! Please make our guests from around the world feel comfortable. Apologies and Correction In one of my ever more frequent confused moments last month I gave the wrong date for our Annual Stockholder s Meeting. This year s Annual Stockholder s Meeting will be help on May 20th. Stockholders please mark your calendars and make plans to attend. Jay Otterbacher CCC President

MEN S MEMBER / MEMBER Saturday, April 25th - Sunday, April 26th Entry Fee: $75 Breakfast & Lunch Provided both Days No Charge for Tournament Club s This year s Men s Spring / will be the ever popular match play, round robin event consisting of (5) nine hole matches. Twenty-seven holes will be played on Saturday, April 25th and the remaining eighteen holes will be played on Sunday, April 26th followed by the championship shootout. This format requires us to close the golf course for regular member play. We apologize for this inconvenience but will make the greatest effort to accommodate all members requests to play on Saturday and Sunday at other courses in the area. MEN S MEMBER / GUEST Thursday, May 14th Practice Round Friday, May 15th - Saturday, May 16th Tournament Proper Sunday, May 17th Rain Date Entry Fee: $375 per team The CCC / Guest is just around the corner. Make plans now to play in the best tournament of the year. Remember, no MEMBER or GUEST will be allowed to play without a verifiable USGA handicap. Contact the golf shop if you have any questions regarding your handicap or your guest s handicap. Please inform your guests to make the appropriate travel plans, as Sunday, May 17th will be used as a RAIN DATE. BAG STORAGE The golf shop bills for the annual bag storage fee in April. The fee for storing a golf bag is $75. The fee for storing a walking cart is $50. The fee for storing both is $115 per year. Please let the golf shop know if you do not want to store your clubs for the upcoming year. 5 SCJGA JUNIOR GOLF FOUNDATION S 14th ANNUAL GOLF BALL When: Thursday, April 10th, 2014 The festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 9th, and will include a silent auction, live auction, prizes, heavy hors d oeuvres and an open bar. Tickets are $50 per individual or $80 per couple and can be purchased at the door or through the SCJGF office by calling Sample of Items Available Golf Package to pristine Edisto Island, Verizon Heritage Clubhouse Badges, Amazing Golf Packages, Other hunting trips and items, Autographed memorabilia by: Mantle, Jordan, Nicklaus, Palmer, etc,over 80 rounds of golf all across South Carolina. Proceeds from this event go to support junior golf programs in South Carolina. Nearly $350,000 has been raised over the first nine years. Those contributions have helped create multiple Junior Golf Programs and supported The First Tee facilities, funded many college scholarships, supported the South Carolina Junior Golf Association s tournament series and provided financial backing for the SCJGA s Little Legends program. The objective this year is to create funding for our Little Legends program and to support other junior golf specific programs throughout South Carolina providing equipment and instruction to junior golfers. The South Carolina Junior Golf Association offers multiple opportunities to youth across our state. This is a tremendous source of revenue for the club and will be done in a way as to not interfere with normal member activity. We appreciate your patience and understanding with this matter. 6 April is an exciting month on every golf course, the azaleas are blooming, the grass is growing and the weather is perfect. The abundant rainfall has some areas of the golf course wet but many members are taking advantage of the breaks in the weather to enjoy the course. In March, we completed our spring pre-emergent herbicide application and have been spot treating weeds throughout the golf course. We have begun mowing fairways, tees, collars and approaches on an as-needed basis as well as completing the first mowing of rough last week. Also, we have begun lightly verti-cutting and topdressing the greens. In addition, we completed the drainage project in front of #8 green and repaired the trenches with sod. The project went well and the area is drying more and more each day. We have scheduled a contractor to spread fertilizer on all the roughs, tees and fairways. This fertilizer will be a slow-release product that will release nutrients continuously over a period of 2-3 months. As always, please be cautious of wet and newly sodded areas and alter your cart traffic accordingly. Each spring as the temperatures rise and the days get longer, plants begin to break their dormancy and actively grow. For many plants, air temperature dictates when they break dormancy, some use light intensity and day length to initiate growth, while others rely on soil temperatures. Bermuda grass begins breaking dormancy when soil temperatures approach PGA Sports Academy Ages 7-13 Summer long program consisting of three levels of teaching juniors knowledge of the game and providing them with the skills necessary to play the sport of golf socially and competitively. 1. er Level 2. Sport Level 3. Champion Level College Prep Ages 14 & Up This program will focus on college development taught by TPI Certified Level 1 Instructors, Chris Sparrow and Eric Davis. These classes will provide the knowledge and skill set to compete at a high school or professional level. This class will focus on advanced swing mechanics, fitness, and nutrition. Each class will consist of on and off the course instruction. Keep an eye out for upcoming dates and times!

7 Hi Everyone! April is here so may I take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy Easter, and hope you get to spend time with your family and friends and also play some great golf. Congratulations to Elaine Johnson and Sara Stork as winners at the WSCGA One Day Fourball tournament at Woodlands recently, well done to both of you. Masters week is almost here, hopefully we will all get the chance to watch some great shots from our favorite pro either in person or on the television. Keep your fingers crossed for fair weather. April 26th is the CCC Silent Auction, so if you have any new but unwanted items you are able to donate please get in touch with Jo Hecker. If you have not already done so, sign up today for our 9 to 5 / Tournament, Saturday April 18th with a 12.30pm shot gun start. Also Sunday 19th is this months Couples tournament, that means fun, food and friendship 2 days in a row, life is good!
