NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2017 MAY 2014 Christmas in July Because of the dedication of so many of our residents, Christmas 2017 was a huge success. The evening started with Santa and his helpers making an appearance at Holiday House with gifts for the kids and refreshments of cookies and drinks. Following the party, several residents participated in a Santa and Mrs. Claus a.k.a. Ray and Trudy Morrish organized the party and put lots of kids in the Christmas spirit. lighted cart parade around the park where a record number of home owners decorated their houses for the occasion. A special thank you goes out to Ron Miranti for doing a such a splendid job of decorating both sides of the street going down to the beach. He also provided entertainment in the form of an outdoor movie projected on Holiday House. He is also planning a movie for Halloween night. In August, Ron will be offering some spooky Halloween decor at wholesale prices. Stop by Lot 234 and see what he has. The decorated beach road drew residents in golf carts all day and well into the evening, sometimes causing small traffic jams. Park Directories are Ready Thanks to the hard work and dedication of Johnny Johnson, the 2017 Directory for Seasonal Residents are available at the office. Pick up your free copy today. Storm Warnings W hen a tornado is reported in the area, the Vernon Township Fire Department will activate the warning siren at the edge of the park. Residents are advised to take shelter at the city hall in Durand. Although our Holiday House is considered to be more resistant to storms than trailers, it is not designed to withstand a tornado. However, whenever a storm is threatened, Holiday House will be left open for our residents to take shelter. Office.Holidayshore@gmail.com

From Our Activities Director T he first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning. The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless, and hot. It is curiously silent, too, with blank white dawns and glaring noons, and sunsets smeared with too much color." Natalie Babbitt, Tuck Everlasting. Yes, folks, it's August. Even though 4th of July seemed like last week, we move on toward fall with as much vengeance as a race car in the last stretch. The first of August presents the long awaited Luau/ Pig Roast set on Saturday, Aug. 5. Ticket holders may head to Holiday House as doors will open at 3 p.m. with dinner starting at 4 p.m. Lots of food, fun, and photos planned for this exciting new event at the park. Doors open at 7 p.m. for everyone to come and enjoy the band. The next big holiday is Halloween on Saturday, Aug. 19 when children can trick or treat from 6 to 8 p.m. Also, volunteers are needed to help with the Halloween Spook House. Check in to help with setup, decorating, participating in the house, and especially the clean-up process. If everyone helps, this will keep the house a fun part of the holiday. Don't forget to decorate your lot to earn trophies for first, second, and third place. The next morning, the local fire departments will make us pancakes! Meet up with local firefighters on Sunday, Aug. 20 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. for breakfast at Holiday House. Cost is a donation. They will also perform some kind of demonstration while here. A deadline has been set to sign-up for the August Casino Trip to Gun Lake Casino in Wayland of August 10. If there are not enough participants, the trip will be cancelled. Sign up by contacting Nancy Johnson on lot #216. Cost is $25. If not cancelled, the trip will be Aug. 22. Hot Dog Tuesdays this month will be held on Aug. 1 and Aug. 15 at noon. Come to enjoy a Koegel hot dog or Johnsonville brat for your lunch. It also includes chips, a sweet treat, and a drink. The out-of-park luncheon will be Wednesday, Aug. 9 at 1 p.m. at Hank and Don's in Swartz Creek. Sign-up at the office. Two golf events highlight the month. The first is the Golf Scramble with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Four person teams will take on the course at Holiday Meadows with teams posted at the clubhouse the day of the event. Coffee and donuts will be served at 8 a.m. and brats at 11:30 a.m. at an additional cost. Water is free. The scramble is open to residents and their guests only. The second golf event is the Championship Golf Tournament on Aug. 27 and is open to members and residents. A nominal fee of $45 will include three early qualifying rounds to establish handicaps. The game will be played in flights with net and gross winners. Trophies will be awarded to the top winners and their names will be displayed on a Championship plaque at the clubhouse. Residents who have signed up for the annual Turkeyville trip will be heading out to visit the dinner theater on August 8. You must have your own transportation for this trip. Turkeyville is located just a few miles north of Marshall. A free sloppy joe dinner is Friday, Aug. 18 at 6 p.m. at Holiday House. Please bring your plate, silverware, drink, and something to share for great neighbor fun. The Holiday Dollies are traveling to Meadowbrook on Thursday, Aug. 24. Thanks to great efforts by residents Johnny and Nancy Johnson, a helpful and concise resident directory is now available at the office. Don't forget to stop and get yours today. Thanks to the Johnsons for all their efforts in making this a valuable tool for residents and also to YES Inc. for their free printing. Sign-ups are available now for vendor slots at the annual Holiday Shores Craft Sale and Bazaar on Saturday, Sept. 2 from 10 to 2 p.m. Spaces are indoor for $20 and outdoor for $10. Reserve your place now by calling Diane Giles at (989) on Lot #369. For more information on events, head to the office or Holiday House for the updated weekly calendars. Have a great August! Beth Wehman

Calling all Crafters V endor applications are still being accepted for spots at the 6th annual Craft Show and Bazaar. Only a few spaces are left so those who want one need to contact Dianne Giles right away. The event will be held at Holiday House from 10 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. September 2. Spaces are priced at $10.00 for an outdoor space and $20.00 to be inside the building. JT s Country Kitchen will be serving up lunches at the location. Popcorn, Cotton Candy, coffee and donuts will also be available during the day. This year Cosco will be in attendance giving out promotional items to publicize their new store in Lansing. Golf Scramble T he 9th annual Holiday Shores Golf Scramble is set for Friday, August 4 with a 9:00 am shotgun start. Teams and tee times will be posted at the clubhouse the day of the event. Coffee and donuts will be served beginning at 8:00 am and brats will be available at 11:30 at an additional cost. Water is free. Name Tags N ame tags may be purchased from Marilyn Gibson for $6.00. Those who wear them at the Wednesday morning meetings are entered into a drawing for a $5.00 prize. Once each month the drawing will be for a gift certificate to an area restaurant. Fishing Tournament D espite a morning of pouring rain on July 22, over fifty avid anglers went out to capture prize winning fish for the annual fishing contest. Resident, Brenda Newsom, not only kept track of each catch, she also provided fishermen with delicious helpings of fried perch at the end of the tournament. Winners of the contest were: Gaylord Day who landed a 27 inch pike, Tim Morrish brought in a 19 inch bass and Trudy Morrish was also a winner with a 10 ¼ inch bluegill. These winners of the 2017 Fishing Tournament proudly display their catches.

Celebrating the Fourth These golf carts were judged to be the best of the best at the annual golf cart parade. First place went to the Marshall Family from Lot # 60 (left), second place was earned by Chloe Boyer from Lot #252 (center) and the Taylor Family from Lot #470 claimed the third place award. Kids of a ll ages c ompeted over 300 for prizes in t h e drens g chilames on the four th. Of the many bikes entered in the Kids Bicycle Parade these were outstanding. First place was Makennah on right, second place was Lily and coming in third place was Jax on far left. Newsletter Information Newsletter to be published the first of each month May to October. Please submit information for publication at least one week prior. Contact: Pat Hankerd - Lot 301 Phone (810) pwhank@gmail.com

Alex Hankerd and Veteran Paul Titmuss present a new flag to observers at the Flag Retirement ceremony. One of several tables loaded with prizes for participants of the childrens games. Five veterans volunteered to help at a formal and somber Flag Retirement ceremony to dispose of worn and tattered flags. 6 Club Championship Golf Tournament P lans are underway for our third annual handicap golf tournament at Holiday Meadows Golf Course August 27. The tournament will be played under USGA rules and will be open to members and residents, A nominal fee of $45.00 will include admission to the tournament as well as three rounds of 18 holes each to establish handicaps. Recent fun-filled putting and chipping contests proved that you don t need to be a good golfer to participate. Even if you are a lousy golfer, $45.00 is a bargain for four rounds of 18 holes. Plus, registration admits you and your spouse to a cocktail/ awards party after the tournament. Another Putting Contest will be held at 12:00 on August 12 and is open to all residents and members. Contact Pat Hankerd (Lot 301) for more details Halloween O ur annual Halloween Spook House is coming. Volunteers are asked to use their imagination to help decorate and staff the tent. We have lots of ideas but need help to implement them. The tent will arrive August 7 at approximately 6:00 p.m. We need help at that time to get it set up with sides and partitions. Don t wait until you are asked. Stop by anytime and pitch in. Resident participation is needed for this tradition to continue. Our Halloween celebration will be August 19 with trick-or-treat from 6:00 to 8:00 and the spook house will open at 8:00 until all have an opportunity to go through. Scavenger Hunts Y ou are invited to participate in weekly scavenger hunts, held from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Forms for each week's hunt are ready to be picked up at the office by noon on Fridays if the weather cooperates. If not, they will be ready on Saturday. You must return your results to the office by 10:00 a.m. If the office is closed, your results may be placed in the outside pay box. You do NOT need to find all the items to enter to be eligible for a prize if one is available. Because prizes are donated, there will sometimes be prizes and sometimes not. (We always appreciate anything people or businesses can donate for prizes.) The correct answers will be posted at the office. The affable bunny figurine, Waldetta, will be placed on the winner's lot as a trophy each week. If a rabbit is visiting you for the week, you may move it around your lot as long as it remains visible from the road. Feel free to exchange information with others. The purpose of the hunt is to meet new friends and to have fun. Now for Princess Polly the Traveling Pig - She is NOT just for scavenger hunters but for everyone and if she's on your site, someone is thinking of you. If you see her, feel free to move her to another site of your choosing. Please place her near the site number post so she won t be in danger from lawn mowers.

Hot Dog Tuesdays H ot Dog Tuesdays have been a huge success with large turnouts of hungry residents stopping by the first and third Tuesdays each month. The menu includes a hot dog or brat with all the fixins, chips, a drink and cookies for only $5.00. Add a second dog or brat for only $2.00 more. Come between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. to enjoy a quick lunch at our Holiday House. Smokin at the Shores D avid and Karen Coach will be serving delicious meals from their smoker near the Maintenance Building each weekend in August. Their menu includes mouth watering pulled pork, ribs, nachos, chicken, hot dogs, burgers and brats. Holiday Dollies Red Hatters A ugust 24 the Holiday Dollies will travel to Rochester, MI to visit the famous Meadow Brook Hall where they will get a guided tour of the 88,000 square foot house featuring elaborately detailed carved wood and stone, handmade hardware and ceramic art tile, ornately molded and carved plaster ceilings, stained glass window insets, crystal and art glass lighting fixtures, and gold-plated bathroom fittings. Residents are invited to join us by contacting Laura on Lot #306. Lunch Out of the Park The Lunch Out of the Park will be held on a Wednesday this month due to the Turkeyville trip on the second Tuesday.
