3 General Manager s Report General Manager s Message We are excited to begin the new year and continue working on our plans and priorities for The Club Board of Governors and staff are committed to improving communicaiton so that our Members are up to date regarding all that is happening in and around the Club. There are several important projects that will be planned, and hopefully completed, within the next months. These projects include replacement of the Ballroom Balcony deck, which would finally resolve the water leaks in the Sam Parks Grille. We are also working to develop a new approach to renovate the upstairs Dining Room that would not include significant changes to the Porch. Our Grounds Committee and staff are working on a systematic plan to repair, replace, remove or improve all golf course sand traps. The Club Food and Beverage staff is currently developing new menus, which will be introduced late winter or early spring, and updated again in October. Our Club Committees provide the foundation and guidance for most projects and initiatives. Committee Chairs for 2018 will be selected in January, and meetings for all committees will be scheduled soon thereafter. All Members are encouraged to get involved with a Club committee. It is the best way to ensure your ideas are heard while hearing the thoughts and perspectives of other Members. A description of the role and purpose of each committee will be published in the February newsletter. Happy New Year! Frank S. Hamschin General Manager JANUARY - FEBRUARY - MARCH HOURS OF OPERATION The clubhouse will be closed beginning January 1st thru January 9th and will reopen on Wednesday, January 10th. 6 Sat 21 Sat 19 Sun 20 Fri 25 AROUND THE GREEN CALENDAR April Opening Day May South Hills Cup Nine & Dine June Winter Activities that can Help you Improve your Golf Game Improving and maintaining your skill level of golf is a continuous process. It is hard to maintain those skills when we have a six to eight month golf season. Even professional golfers look for different ways to improve and maintain their game during the off season. Here are some activities you can try to improve your golf game during the winter months. Fri 8 - Sat 9 Wed 13 Sat 16 Fri 29 Sat 7 Thurs 19 - Sat 21 Fri 27 Sat 28 - Sun 29 Fri 3 Sat 4 - Sun 5 Fri 10 - Sat 11 Fri 31 Fri 14 - Sat 15 Sat 6 Member/Member Father-Son Championship Father-Daughter Championship Nine and Dine July Couples Championship Men s Invitational Nine and Dine Senior Club Championship August Club Championship Qualifier Club Championship Ryder Cup Nine and Dine September Fall Stroke Play October Men s Closing Day / SWAT Party Yoga Practicing yoga can bring a lot of benefits to your golf game. It will make you more flexible and improve your range of motion. Your swing will become more fluid. Yoga can also make your core muscles stronger which will boost the power of your swing. Yoga also involves a lot of stretching, which you need to avoid common golf injuries. Running - Running will improve your endurance and cardiovascular stamina to help you maintain your performance throughout all 18 holes. Running will also strengthen your legs, which is something that is commonly overlooked in training for golf. Generating strength through your legs will add power to your swing. A combination of running and yoga during the winter would be great way to prepare for the start of the 2018 golf season. Weight Training Have you ever seen a bulky golfer? They may be rare, but a lot of golfers have toned muscles. Weight training for golf is not aimed at building big muscles. Focus in making the muscles in your arms, core and legs stronger, so you will have a powerful swing without exerting a lot of effort. Racquetball Racquetball can be enjoyed inside during the harsh winter months. If you can hit a ball moving at 90 miles per hour, then you will surely have the confidence in hitting a stationary ball. The motions of a racquetball will also help you be comfortable in utilizing your hips and legs in generating power for your golf swing. The Golf Professionals at South Hills Country Club will be offering Winter Instruction at multiple indoor golf facilities. Please contact us for further information. 7 From the LADIES TEE HAPPY NEW YEAR from the WGA! Wishing all a happy, healthy and prosperous 2018! Thanks to all who supported the Holiday Buffet and Boutique in December. A good time was had by all; what a festive way to kick off the holiday season. A few of the highlights: the Gingerbread room, containing the desserts (yummy hot chocolate and a signature Christmas cake just to name a few!), the strolling musician who entertained with an electric violin and the awesome shopping bags supplied by Gianna Via (thank you, Tony and Mary Machi). This is all in addition to the rest of the delicious buffet created by Chef John (he never disappoints) and the wondrous array of wares offered by the vendors. Thanks to Sue Pasqual and her committee for their attention to every detail to ensure a quality SHCC event. A special thanks to Jeanne Pruni who shared her time and experience for a seamless transition from a lunch to an after-hours event. Please plan on joining us next year! The WGA Board is busy preparing for the upcoming golf season. We will share a more detailed schedule next month, but here are a few dates to remember: Tuesday, April 10 Opening Cocktail and Vendor Event Tuesday, April 17 Ladies Opening Day Tuesday, June 19 Ladies Invitational Tuesday, Oct 9 Closing day The Vice Presidents, Amy Baloh and Linda Martin, have been coordinating dates and events, as well as making a few changes to the WGA schedule based on input from the end-of-season survey. The schedule will include Tuesday events; Play your Way Thursdays and at least one WGA weekend event. We are continuing to work on a 9 holers group to include new golfers. Stay tuned for a fun schedule of events! The WGA is a special group of women and we are always looking to welcome new members. There is no minimum skill level required! We have a lot of fun while playing a game we love. The Pro Shop works with us to offer clinics to address every need. Whether you are brand new or want to concentrate on an aspect of your game, please consider attending a clinic. Details to come in future newsletters.
