EACC NEWS East Aurora Country Club Member Newsletter April, 2019 Board of Directors Jay Hoagland 2019 President & Human Resourses Message from the President: April 2019 In days of yore, opening day of the baseball season was special, signifying that spring had come at last. Today, however, opening day sort of dribbles into existence and the spiritual start of Spring now belongs to the Master s golf tournament, where the azaleas and magnolias and dogwood bloom. The EACC calendar includes the Opening Day Swat on the 13th and the Easter Sunday Brunch on the 21st. See you at the Club! 2 House News The first couple of weeks of Spring almost feel like the real deal, at least that's what the few robins I've seen led me to believe. Spring also means the return of our snow birds! Everyone in the clubhouse is excited to see our southern friends return so we can show off all the great changes we have made so far. Spring is a season of change, and we are embracing that change this month in the Clubhouse with new spring hours starting the week of April 16. The new hours will be Tuesday 11am-2:30pm (lunch), Wednesday through Saturday 11am-8pm (Lunch and Dinner). Wine Down Wednesday will continue through April to celebrate hump day with great food and select wines. We are launching a special "Pasta Night" on Thursday April 18 to celebrate our first Thursday night dinner service of the year. Enjoy all you can eat, hand prepared pasta dishes from one of our chefs at pasta stations set up around the dining room. This will be the only menu available this night, but with endless pasta and bread, it's a deal not to miss! Our first April event, "Cooking with Tom", hosted by the Women's Board, sold out very quickly! Our new executive chef will be teaching a small group how to prepare and cook a simple, yet elegant meal. This Enjoy a pimento cheese sandwich during the Master's viewing party on Saturday, April 13. The menu for the viewing party is based on traditional Master's fare including egg salad sandwiches, Master's club, BBQ pork and more! We will be watching the Master's throughout the bar and dining room until around 5pm, so come in anytime for some fun food and golf! Jasper Green will be entertaining us again on Saturday, April 20 on the piano during dinner service. Jasper is a very talented young man who very much enjoys coming to our little club to play the piano for our members. Finally, Easter Sunday brunch is already filling up very quickly. Call soon for reservations for Chef Tom's special Holiday Brunch buffet and a visit from the Easter Bunny! 4 News from the Golf Shop: Dear Member, Happy April! We are in the final stretch of what turned out to be a longer than normal WNY winter. The forecast ahead is promising for an earlier than average start. We will keep our fingers crossed that the months stolen from us last fall will be returned to us this spring. That said, in my 20 years as a golf professional in upstate NY, I ve found that our typical opening generally coincides with the start of the Masters. Some years we are ahead, and some we are behind. Moving forward, I think if you use that as a measuring stick, your expectations will be met more times than not. Please see below some important dates surrounding the first months of the golf season. There is a much more detailed listing on our website. I ll ask that you refer to that for your planning purposes. You will see that our first club wide event is scheduled for April 13 th. Our opening SWAT is a popular and fun way to kick start the 2019 season. It is open to the entire membership and we will have different divisions as the field assembles. We ve also planned a couple fun and informative opportunities following the golf. I will be offering a brief explanation surrounding the more important new rules for The idea of this is to keep you informed and up to date on the major rules that might affect your daily play. I plan on keeping it to 30 minutes in length and only cover the new definitions. This is not designed to be a Rules of Golf Seminar. The fun aspect to the day will be with the menu options. Our kitchen will be offering a similar menu to what you would get at Augusta during the Masters. (Same pricing too!) This is all shaping up to be a fun day. In the event that Mother Nature doesn t cooperate with us for the outside activity, plan on arriving at the club around1:30 for the rules portion. The Masters will be available once television coverage begins. 5 News from the Golf Shop: We have a few promotions in the works for These follow our continued efforts to bring our membership numbers to our ideal goal. We are holding our own on the golf side, with just under 225 to start the season. It would be nice to add more. On that note, we are going to be offering a Member for the Month of May promotion. For a small fee, the first 10 individuals interested will be allowed full access to the country club. This will only be during the month of May and there are some restrictions and obligations the prospects must adhere to. First, there will be no access to league or tournament play. They will also be restricted to play beginning after 9:00 on the weekends, and it s only open to first time EACC members. A brief orientation must be attended to give the prospective members an opportunity to learn why they might want to be a part of our country club family. We feel that we have a much better opportunity to garner more members if they have the opportunity to see first hand why we find EACC so special. So, if you know anybody that is on the fence, or that has mentioned to you that they might be interested in joining, have them call me and I can explain the program in greater detail. (This will only be available for Intermediate and General Classifications) Our other great promotions are attached at the end of this newsletter. We feel that we have tremendous area for growth in both our House and Social Golf categories. We also now feel that we have a product and a level of service that warrants increase in membership. The BOD has elected to lower the annual membership fee to just $ and has also adopted the annual minimum program. Both areas that should make joining EACC from a House class much more attractive. On that note, a new category has been created. Social Golf memberships will be offered to those interested in our house membership but might want a limited access to the golf course. For a $500 annual fee the Social Golf category allows members to everything house members enjoy as well as access to a limited number of social golf opportunities. The attached flyers explain in greater detail both membership offerings. Again, if you know of anyone that might be interested, have them call me directly at ext. 5 We are once again running the Titleist ProV1 special. We ve sent out a few s announcing the specifics. If you d like to take advantage, please call or Kevin as he will be organizing the orders. It s a popular spring staple that allows members to purchase personalized ProV1, ProV1x, or new this year AVX golf balls. The best part, is its a buy 3 dozen get one free promotion. Titleist only offers this special in the spring, so don t miss out! You save over $50.00 for a product you are sure to use. See you at the first tee soon! Dave PGA Head Professional 5
Grounds With Drew It has been a busy few weeks for us in the Grounds Department. Even though the weather hasn t been great we are still finding time to get out on the course. We have made a start at getting things cleaned up and repaired from another busy winter. We have been cleaning up limbs and leaves, grinding stumps and helping with concrete work at the Pro Shop. The good news is that the turf all seems to have come through the winter in one piece. Please be patient with us as we work through our spring clean up and whip the course back into shape. As I mentioned last month, we are in the process of updating the credit card provider here at the club. Along with that we are having to update policy to reflect rules and regulations specific to our state laws. This take some time and we will communicate when we are ready to go when that day comes. Thanks for your understanding in this matter. Nicer weather is on the horizon. Here s to another amazing EACC golf season. See you on the course! Drew Thompson, CGCS MULLIGAN'S NEWS We continue to meet for lunch on Fridays, fully hoping that we ll soon be out in the front nine... No pressure Drew! Postcards from our missing Mulligan members continue to flood our mailbox... Maybe a larger mailbox is needed! See ya on the Tee! Brian Huckle, 2nd VP 6
18 Hole Golf News - April 2019 Hello Spring! Ladies, April 16th is our opening date for the 18 Hole League (if the course is open and weather is decent) Let's hope for both. Our start time is 9:00 and there will be coffee and pastries up in the bar area before we play so please go up and enjoy. This will be our first money game of the season. You can also start keeping track of your ringers and save your sheets for Denise Tait. Remember to sign up the Sunday ( by 5:00 pm )before any play on Tuesday so that Kevin can make the pairings. The sign up sheet will be in the pro shop. If you sign up and find you can t play, please call the pro shop to let them know. They like to have the score cards printed to give to you when you arrive on Tuesday mornings. See you on the course. Come on Sunshine! Debbie Colt -18 Hole Chairperson 9-HOLE GOLF NEWS, April 2019 Is everyone ready for Spring to arrive? I know I am! With that said, we have a number of upcoming activities coming our way. We start our season on Thursday, April 18 th (weather permitting) at 9:30 a.m. We will follow with a luncheon and hope to see everyone there, as important information/schedules will be passed out. Dave told me just the other day we had a record amount of play last year, so let s keep the momentum going. Also a reminder to please call the golf shop by Wednesday afternoon to sign up for Thursday play so as to avoid any last minute changes in the schedule Thursday morning. Brandon has also agreed to put together clinics before golf starts on the morning of to help with our game. More information will follow. Saturday, April 13 th is the Opening SWAT and Masters Viewing Party. Shotgun starts at 9:00 am so please sign-up by calling the golf shop. Around 1:30 pm Dave will go over the new rules that have been set up for this year. What better way to start the season off than golf in the morning and watching the Masters and relaxing in the afternoon? Sounds like a fabulous day all around! Sunday, April 5 th the Women s Board will be hosting a 3 Hole Mixer with a Cinco de Mayo theme. Dave, Kevin and Brandon will be on hand giving their expert advice on how to improve your game. More information will be forthcoming. So please mark your calendars for these great events coming your way. Let s hope for an early spring and get those clubs ready for some exciting times ahead! Debbie Kane, 9 Hole Co-chair 7
Women s Board April 2019 Well it appears that Punxsutawney Phil may have gotten it correctly this year when on February 2 nd he did NOT see his shadow, calling for a hopeful prediction of an early spring arrival! When I see the bulbs springing up around the EACC campus, it gives me faith in the prospect of being out and about on the course earlier rather than later this year. Drew and Crew can be seen busily working to get our course and grounds into the beautiful and pristine condition that we all can appreciate throughout the season. Fingers Crossed!!! The Women s Board has been working diligently with Club Managers David and Eric in developing plans for both golf and non-golf events for the upcoming season. Some new some tried and true! Cooking with Chef Tom proved to be a popular one, selling out long before the planned date of April 4 th. Our thanks to the membership for your interest and support. Looking forward to a great evening. While in discussion with Eric, the issue of the poor condition of the clubhouse bar stools was raised. So in a collaborative pop-up project, the Women s Board initiated reupholstering of all the stools in the club bar area. We hope that the fresh look and new upholstery is enjoyed by all and their guests. Well liked by the membership last year, our next scheduled event called for this years repeat. On Cinco de Mayo Sunday, May 5 th, the Women s Board will once again host the popular Ladies 3 Hole Mixer. Beginning at 11AM, open to golfers of all skill levels; join us for an on course 3 hole mixer. It s a non-scoring fun format with our Pro Staff joining us on each hole to offer their professional tips and guidance. Margaritas on Hole #1 with Cinco Snacks to follow, it s a fun-filled afternoon and a great way to meet new members or just reconnect with friends you already know. Cost is $15PP; contact the pro-shop to reserve your spot at , Ext 4. Planning continues for our major fund raising event of the year, Lucky Ladies-Putt N Party. This years event is being held on Saturday, June 1 st. With the addition of an optional golf component, cost per person falls within 3 tier levels based on participation. All price levels include dinner with auction to follow and pricing is per person. $40 Dinner & Auction only. Golfing? Special Lucky Lady Guest Pricing Includes Cart: 18 Holes +$40; 9 Holes +$20; members-cart fees only. Food stations will be available upon guest arrival. Participants may browse Chinese and Silent Auctions and dine at their option. Seated dessert service provided when auction awards commence. Please join us for what should be a lovely event coupled with good food and great basket items. (More details to follow.) Upcoming Events (Details to Follow): Flower Power (Sunday, 06/02/11-Date Change) Drive for the Cure (Friday, 9 Hole Social 08/23/19) Kathy Lentz Women s Board President Questions or Suggestions: Cell: (716) ; firsticequeen@hotmail.com 8
The Wednesday Night Women s League (WWL) will be kicking off its 7 th season of the WWL on May 8th! If you re interested in joining the fun, please contact Kevin (kevin@eastauroracc.com ) or Dave (david@eastauoracc.com) to sign up. If you don t have a partner, that s fine. The pro shop will try to pair you with someone. Any questions don t hesitate to contact me. See you out on the course! Emily Bobak ekobrist@gmail.com IJM Update April 2019 As I write this I was pleased to find out that we are open for play at EACC! It will be great to get back out and play. Looking forward to seeing some of the changes done over the winter. We are now three months away from the 67 th IJM. Plans are all coming together nicely. Most importantly, OB is very enthusiastic about this year s field. We have many top juniors already committed and have invites out to several more. We have a very high renewal rate on sponsors as well so thanks to all for your support. We will have some Finals Party sponsorships available and we will likely have a few foursomes available in the Ham Am so please let me, Ron Olson or Frank Ziolkowski know if you are interested. I have been approached a few times already about volunteering during tournament week. We will be posting the signup sheet in the Pro Shop in mid-may so be on the lookout for that. If you have further questions feel free to ask when you see me or check with Rudy Ruschmann or Doug Marky and they will be happy to provide answers. Finally, on a sad note, former EACC member Russ Mackellar passed away last month in North Carolina. Our condolences to his brother Bruce. For many years Russ supported the junior golf program at EACC as a chaperone for the weekly interclub matches and his dedication is remembered and appreciated. Always a gentlemen, he will be missed by all who knew him. Jeff Kamien Tournament Director 9
