1 CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Philadelphia Chapter - American Singles Golf Association March 2011 FROM THE PREZ As the days get longer and the temperature rises, we are aware of the changes. Things are changing with ASGA too. The big change is we are going green. No longer will you be receiving your monthly newsletter by regular mail. It will now be on line only. Make sure you take the time to read your newsletter, your weekly blasts and check out the web site. Everything you need to know about what we are doing is posted. As the social season winds down, we are working hard to get the golf calendar filled. Flyers are posted for our April outings - Spring Hollow April 2, Westover April 10, Center Square April 23 and Mainland April 30. The weekend of April 16 and 17 is still open, so if anyone wants to set up an outing contact Lori ASAP. Even though it's noted in the newsletter, don't forget the Kick-Off Meeting Thursday March 10 at 6:30 pm at the Dolce in King of Prussia. Don Munson will be presenting the handicap system we have set up for the chapter. It's also a great way to see friends you may have missed over the winter. As I have said before, this chapter is more than a golf group - we are friends, we are family. We do have fun no matter what we do - golf or social. Those of you who were at our social events can attest to that fact. Those of you who could not attend, you missed a great time. Every social event was well attended. Thanks to the Social Committee for doing a great job - wine tasting, holiday party, New Years Eve, Philadelphia Golf Show, bowling, tech seminar, indoor golf and who can forget deep fried bacon in the Memphis Tap Room. Golf season is just around the corner, get the clubs out of the closet, clean them off and wait for the temperature to rise so we can hit them straight. ~Tom Sheehan, President SEASON CHAPTER KICK OFF! Twenty three (23) ASGA members stormed the alleys at Facenda Lanes in Norristown, PA to test their Bowling skills. There was the good, the bad, and the ugly as we tried our best to keep the ball out of the gutter and on the lane heading toward the strike zone. It was fun watching each other attempting to look like they knew what we were doing, but it was more fun to see the delight on faces when they managed a strike now and then. Of course, there's always ringers in any game, and Ed Murphy and Pat Miller were ours with high series scores of 598 & 512. No wonder they each won a hand of poker along with John Fasciocco. Our thanks to Rene & Lori who dealt out the cards and kept track of the winners for each game. The course was somewhat soft, due to the previous days rain. Larry's drive embedded half way up the approach slope to the par-3 green. Larry wanted to lift and clean his ball and take a free drop. Scott, another member of the foursome said heck no, he specifically recalled reading a rule prohibiting relief for a ball in a pitch mark. Was Larry entitled to relief? What is the correct ruling? A. Assuming that Larry did not need to lift the ball for identification, no, he can not lift the ball, and even if lifted for identification, he could not clean the ball. The old play the ball as it lies rule pertains. B. Scott is half way correct, there is no relief if your ball is in a pitch-mark that was not of your making...a ball mark made by another golfer. But that does not pertain in this instance. C. Yes Larry is entitled to relief. Larry does not have to play his ball as it lies. His ball was embedded in its' own pitch mark. Rules the embedded ball rule, allows that a ball embedded in its own pitch-mark in the ground in any closely mown area through the green may be lifted, cleaned and dropped, without penalty, as near as possible to the spot where it lay but not nearer the hole.
