Thank you for your support in We are so thankful for you, our members! On behalf of the staff here at your club, we wish you and your families health, joy and prosperity in 2018! As you make your new year s resolutions, let me suggest a few things to add to your list. This is a great time of year to get yourself in a golf swing or tennis stroke improvement program with one of our golf or tennis professionals. Now is a great time to talk to MJ or Daniel about finding a tennis group that will be encouraging and fun. If golf is your passion, then see Brent, Brock, Taylor or Andrew to do the same. We have great leagues for men, women, juniors and even couples that are designed to be lightly competitive and super fun! Anyway, you shape it, these groups are the best ways to get more out your membership and involved this year. Let us know if we can provide you with additional information on any of our programs. Joining Windyke has never been easier, and you are our best recruiting tool. Recently, I was asked why should I recruit more members? There are a bunch of great answers to that question. Here are the top two reasons you should encourage others to join you and your family here at Windyke. The first being it allows you to have more friends to enjoy your favorite activities with. Secondly, a healthy membership roll helps us to keep our fees affordable and allows us to work on making the club better for you. We have continued the Plus One Membership drive program specifically for those two reasons. Check out the Plus One program listed in this newsletter or contact the office for more information. Hands down, you are our best recruiters. So, let us know if we can provide assistance with recruiting a friend, family member or acquaintance. Please let me know where we are doing well and where we need to improve. Your feedback is always helpful and can become success to your club. We look forward to seeing you active in 2018! This event is only for the brave hearted. That includes women and juniors. REMEMBER THAT ANY PERSON OR TEAM THAT CANCELS OUT OF THE TOURNAMENT WILL BE ADDED TO THE SISSY LIST.

The greatest thing about this event is that it is played in Memphis, TN weather. This means that it may be anywhere from 30 to 70 degrees. Don t sign up if you are a wimp! This event is only for the brave hearted. That includes women and juniors. REMEMBER THAT ANY PERSON OR TEAM THAT CANCELS OUT OF THE TOURNAMENT WILL BE ADDED TO THE SISSY LIST. With football season over, there are no acceptable excuses for not playing. So, call the golf shop and sign up today. We know you will have a great time. Guidelines are as follows: Four Person Handicap Scramble Format Make Your Own Team or sign up as an individual and we will pair you. All players canceling after February 21 at 5 p.m. will be charged for the entry fee. Guests will be allowed but must provide handicap information and must be approved by golf shop Each team s handicap is based on the following formula using a player s USGA index: 0 and Below = 5 points = 4 points = 3 points = 2 points = 1 point Add up the total points and subtract from 10. That will will be the team handicap. If you do not have a full team, we can help you find additional players. 3 WINDYKE GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE WINTER UPDATE: Painting greens provides an aesthetically pleasing visual contrast between the green and its surroundings. Painting them the dark green color absorbs more sunlight which raises soil temperatures. Warm soil temperatures in conjunction with greens covers helps prevent winter damage to the greens. We cover greens when the low for the night is going to reach 25 degrees or below. Soil Temperatures, Soil Moisture, Wind, Precipitation and Temperature of Days before and after we cover are all considerations taken when determining to cover. The Greens Covers helps retain the heat that is already in the soil. Test results have shown Champion Bermuda grass damage when exposed to colder temperatures. ANY damaged areas will not green-up in the spring and will have to be replaced. Last year, we had James Rainwater. James is from Elmore, Alabama which is just north of Montgomery.

James or Jimmy as he is known in the golf shop, recently graduated from the program and we are fortunate to have him choose Windyke over his other opportunities to begin his career.

This is validated by the fact that the Windyke staff has won a Club Fitter of the Year award by top tier manufacturers 11 of the last 15 years.

Previously, Taylor was the First Assistant Professional at Jackson Country Club in Jackson, MS, where he was primarily a teacher and club fitter.

This was seventh time Ping has chosen Windyke, but the first Club Fitter of the Year award that Taylor has received in his career and we could not be more proud.

Each student is required to complete 20 months in internships prior to graduation and we are fortunate to have been chosen as a host facility for many young professionals over the years. This year led by Taylor, Windyke has been named again the Club Fitter of the Year by Ping Golf. This opportunity to win this award could not be done without your support. We appreciate all of the trust that you place in Windyke when it comes time for you or your friends to upgrade equipment. Just like with James, Andrew Argotsinger completed his last internship here at Windyke before graduating from Mississippi State a year ago this past December. Andrew obviously also chose Windyke to begin his career. During his time here, Andrew has excelled in our system and has become an invaluable asset to the club while taking on many new responsibilities whenever the need arose. It is with great pride to announce Andrew as the new First Assistant Professional here at Windyke. Don t forget about frost this time of year. When reserving your starting time, please be aware of how frost can affect your time. First, the opening of the courses may be delayed if there is coverage of frost or if the greens are frozen. Secondly, if the courses are delayed in opening, then starting times scheduled prior to actual opening time will be lost. We will make every attempt to accommodate players that have lost their times in this manner. We may start some groups on the back if available or work in groups as space allows. Most importantly, we don t push back times for the remainder of the day based on the delay in the morning. The title of First Assistant is only given to those professionals who have clearly demonstrated the ability to understand the role of the golf professional as it relates to the day to day management of a facility. This position is not only the daily operations manager but also plays key roles in managing, training and scheduling the other staff members. This new title is well deserved and we are honored to have Andrew as a key component of our staff. 5 Tip from the Pro Happy New Year to all! I know some of you have been thinking about how to Brock Shafer Director of Instruction Windyke CC brock@windyke.com improve your golf game in 2018 and cannot emphasize the TECH Pack enough. I come from a technology background (Director of Instruction at Golf TEC) and would love to show you how winter training with technology can benefit you. It is true that training without ball flight visual can speed a player s development if done for a short time. It allows the player to make changes to his/her swing process without fear of bad shots along the way. Sometimes a bad looking shot is done with a better swing and time must be given for the swing change to take shape. Give the TECH Pack a try and see if it doesn t give you a big boost going into the 2018 season. Taylor Navin, Assistant PGA Professional Fitness Prepare Yourself for Golf Season As the days are shorter and the winter weather arrives, most of us will be guilty of sitting around entirely too much and even potentially putting on the dreaded holiday weight. Our once functional golf swing, or even the progress we were making towards our swing changes, can be lost due to inactivity this offseason. Instead of repeating this cycle, grab a water bottle and towel, and let s get to work. The link below has endless exercises, ranging from beginner to advanced. Some of these require equipment at a gym, but most can be done at home. Use the search tab to filter the exercises specific to your goals.

6 Windy Whisper December 15,2017 OH, THE WEATHER OUTSIDE WAS FRIGHTFUL... A rainy, cold morning didn t stop the stout-hearted Windyke ladies from celebrating at our annual WLGA Holiday Brunch! Host Juli Eck s home was warm and cozy as our own barmaids, Robin Bunard and Laura Veesart mixed the famous mimosas! The array of food was plentiful as old and new friends came together. Many thanks to Juli and everyone who made the day special. Our yearly goal of collecting money for the Salvation Army Renewal Place was outstanding! Putting together the donations from the Men s Member/Guest, Windyke CC, friends of the WLGA and our own membership, we raised $ That is truly amazing and the largest amount ever! Thank you, one and all, for backing our project of giving and sharing with mothers who need a helping hand. We can t say enough thanks to Diane Rosloniec who spearheaded this outreach for SARP. She organized a wonderful pot-luck lunch for the mothers, the directors, and our WLGA members who went on Tuesday for fellowship and gifts! Being a crafty person, Diane knitted scarves for each woman as well as wrapped items from Avon! The main event was the presentation of the envelopes with $150 Walmart gift cards for each mother! Tears flowed and hugs were abundant. Some of the ladies there have nothing, and though SARP provides shelter, food and counseling, it doesn t provide for personal items. This gift will go a long way for them and their children, especially at this time of year. Often, we forget how much the very basics of living mean. People get on the wrong path, but somehow these women are trying to get back to living a wholesome life with their children. Some of their stories were amazing as we sat among them. It was humbling to be a part of representatives from the WLGA to bring smiles and good cheer. On behalf of your officers of both groups, we wish you a very Merry Christmas with family and friends!
