May 2016 Volume 188 From the Chef Hi all, I would like to welcome everyone back for another exciting season here at loyalist. The new menu is now out so come give it a try.

We will have a taste of the world night each month which features an additional menu showcasing dishes from different countries around the world.

With continued support we can plan and host many more events. We also have a great venue and menu options for hosting your events here on premises.

What s Inside From the: Chef ProShop Golf Ontario Operations Manager Office The dates have been set for backyard parties and other special events during the year. We will have a taste of the world night each month which features an additional menu showcasing dishes from different countries around the world. There are also weekly specials such as wheel Wednesday (pizza 10 $ for take out or eat in), meltdown Mondays, and a soup and sandwich feature everyday for 10$. With continued support we can plan and host many more events. We also have a great venue and menu options for hosting your events here on premises. Let us take care of the cooking,cleaning and serving of your next party or get together so you don t have too. I look forward to seeing everyone around the clubhouse Cheers Chef Kevin From the ProShop May is upon us and the good weather seems to have come with it! It is great to see so many familiar faces back for another summer on the links! We have some fantastic club events coming up in May to mark on your calendar. First off, we will be hosting the first annual Loyalist Junior Showcase on May 14 th & 15 th in an effort to showcase some of the area s fantastic talent. The tournament has attracted junior golfers from Ottawa all the way to Newmarket and is sure to be a great success! The Ladies Invitational will be held here at Loyalist on the 25 th of May. This Golf for the Cure event will be raising money for cancer research and we encourage all the ladies out there to sign up and show your support! The tournament features fantastic prizing and is open to golfers of all skill levels, featuring both a competitive and casual/fun division. The Spring Scramble was scheduled to be held on May 1 st but was postponed due to cold and rainy weather. We have settled on May 29 th as a new date and are hoping for far better luck with the weather! We already have 16 teams signed up and are looking for more! Stop by the proshop for more info! The Shaw Insurance Senior Men s Invitational will be held on June 6 th. This annual event is open to all males 50 years of age and over, and features four separate age divisions. With over $5,000 in prizing, this is not an event to miss! Registration has already started to secure your spot today! We have some terrific apparel in the proshop this season, bringing in new brands such as Second Skin, Under Armour, Sunice, Antigua, and more. The shop is also featuring a hat + shirt combo for an unbelievable $39.95 (CCC discout applies). Stop by and pick up something new and start the season off in style! 2 2 The 2016 season was officially launched with the Kingston District convening it s annual Spring Meeting at Loyalist Country Club on April 24 th and in her opening remarks, Shirley Egerton, District Convenor provided an overview of the Association s recently revised Mission statement and Strategies. Consistent with other provincial associations a change in name has occurred and the Golf Association of Ontario (GAO) will now be identified as Golf Ontario. Golf Ontario is committed to the mission of providing leadership and support for all Ontarians to enjoy golf as a life long sport. We probably all recognize the gaps in terms of all age groups enjoying the sport and to many, golfing has become too competitive. For a variety of valid reasons younger generations have not been participating and task of encouraging Kids in Golf has been underway for a couple of years with some good headways being achieved. However, more is to be done in this area and clubs will be exploring new initiatives and programs involving kids and ensuring the fun element is a priority. On the local scene, the St. Lawrence Tour has announced 11 events for 2016 and reported a record number of 160 juniors participated last season. Loyalist is continuing a Golf in the Schools program and you might have already seen groups on the driving range receiving the benefit of professional instruction and getting the opportunity to practice. New this year, will be a Loyalist Junior Showcase being presented by CanWealth Financial Services and will welcome participation by juniors 18 years and under in four divisions. At the Spring Meeting, several clubs reported new initiatives aimed at encouraging junior participation and it seems at all levels the challenge of adapting to changing times will be met head on. Broadening our horizons will undoubtedly encourage new golfers of all ages and given this strategic direction by Golf Ontario we can look forward some interesting times ahead. The Spring format provides clubs with the opportunity to exchange information/tournament flyers and this information has been assembled by the Loyalist Ladies & Men s Leagues into binders located in the respective locker rooms and Junior bulletin board. These are an easy reference to determine the availability of golf tournaments being hosted in the area, provided the clubs delivered copies of their flyers. However, a complete listing is recorded on the Kingston District website (gao.ca). Elaine Jackson, Tournament Co-ordinator outlined this year s calendar for Kingston District events and advised all events will include NET as well as Gross winners with special emphasize on the fun element. So if you are interested in playing in a different format or experience a different venue, there are lots of choices. Certainly keep in mind our own club tournament schedule which features some of the best tournaments on the local amateur tour. To keep abreast on Golf Ontario activities and programs members are encouraged to visit and in particular click on the Kingston District Tab for the local happenings. Ontario Junior Girls Championship July 4-7/2016 Although we will not be hosting The Great Waterway Classic again this year, Loyalist will be welcoming the Ontario Junior Girls early in July and yes, there will be volunteer opportunities. Further details will follow with future newsletters and other notices will be posted in the Member locker rooms but for the moment, please note the dates on your calendars. This is a Provincial Golf Ontario Championship and already participants from the GTA and other locations have registered; no doubt the full field of 54 players will be filled and we will be in for some fine golfing performances by these young ladies. There will be some registration duties, 3 hole score reporting, marshalling, timing and other tasks for volunteers and with a smaller number of participants, volunteer shifts will not be nearly as onerous as we endured during the past couple of years. We have always enjoyed working with the Golf Association Tournaments and with our PGA Tour-Canada experience look forward to extending a true professional experience for these young promising golfers. 3 3 From the Operations Manager Welcome to the spring of 2016! It surely has been a strange one with some very high temps and interspersed cool days and evenings. Let s all hope that the heat stays very soon! For those that stayed in Ontario and challenged the winter, we were led to believe it would be an early spring with the unseasonable warm temps, but it was the second week of April again before the course opened. Once open, it was well worth the wait with unbelievable early season conditions. The opening dinner and dance was a great success with 130+ attendees and a fabulous buffet presented by Chef Kevin. Be sure to watch your for upcoming special events throughout the season. Our CCC wine and cheese evening was an overwhelming success with over 180 attendees, more than any other event ever! Devon Daniell attended and unveiled the purchase of 490 acres on the east side of county rd 7 by Kaitlin Corporation. Also, new for the 2016 season is the CCC only menus that will be available on a monthly basis. Please ask your server for the menu and be sure to carry your CCC membership card. Our target date for the pool/hot tub opening is May 20 barring any unforeseen circumstances. So far so good with the opening now just assuring the health inspector is available and we should be ready to go. In closing; Correct stance Len and Barry emerged from the clubhouse to tee off at the first, but Len looked distracted. "Anything the matter, mate.'" Barry asked. "Oh, it's just that I can't stand the club pro," Len replied. "He's just been trying to correct my stance." "He's only trying to help your game," Barry soothed. "Yeah, but I was using the urinal at the time." Fore!
