1 Difference March 2016 Manager s Message Dear Members, According to Groundhog Day, they are calling for an early spring. The weather we have been receiving lately, I am beginning to wonder if that will be the case. I am hoping that spring gets here sooner than later. One good thing is that the days are getting longer and it is staying light later. For many of you, spring break celebrations are just around the corner and I know many will be migrating south to take advantage of the warmer weather. For those traveling on spring break, we hope that you have a safe trip and enjoyable weather. March is usually a time when things really start happening around the club. We have date night with live music on March 12th, the MGA Spring Classic on March 12th, our ever popular brunch with the Easter Bunny on Saturday, March 26th and our highlighted Easter Brunch on March 27th. We continue to add events to our club calendar, so please be sure to check the website, to view the calendar of events or refer to the club newsletter for a list of club activities. As I have mentioned before, we are continually evaluating ourselves to serve you better and are always seeking your feedback on ways to improve things around the club. I would like to thank those who have taken the opportunity to either stop by my office or send an with positive feedback or constructive criticism. I take it very seriously and openly share the good and bad with the department managers in staff meetings. It is our goal to stay engaged and connected with our member s and be able to communicate about your needs. Our number one goal is Member satisfaction. Please remember, my door is always open and I encourage our membership to stop by any time if they have questions about the club or operations. See you at the club! 4 Golf in the Now Hello, Everyone! One of the root causes of inconsistent ball striking is coming off-plane in transition and into impact. The video clip below illustrates a simple drill you can do on the range when practicing to help keep the sweet spot of the club on the functional swing plane thru impact. Doing so correctly almost ensures more solid and consistent contact because a number of crucial things happen: 1- The club is not released early, or casted away from the body, too soon in the downswing 2- The arms and hands stay closer to the body on the downswing, keeping the club swinging more down and on an inside path 3- More power is generated and subsequently released a bit later, and with more force and speed, closer to impact. If you watch the drill, you will find it simple to do and easy to replicate on your own when practicing. Give it a try! Jim Williams Golf in the Now, LLC Jim@GolfintheNow.com Turf Talk It is hard for us to get into the spirit of spring with the cold weather we have been experiencing lately, but we know it is just around the corner. Spring time is usually a good indication that it is time for aerification of our bentgrass greens. The process will be a little different this year as we will be contracting out to a company that will dryject the greens. This process is performed with a machine that air injects a pore space into the greens surface and then backfills with a dried sand. The course maintenance staff will follow behind the dryject process, apply soil amendments and a light topdressing application. Spring aerification is always very important this time of year to help build the root system and get ready for the long summer months ahead. The golf course will be closed for greens aerification on Monday and Tuesday, March 21st and 22nd. The winter weather has not been as kind to us recently, leaving us much wetter than usual and not being able to tackle the drainage project I discussed last month. We hope to be well into the drainage work by the time you receive this March update and hope to finish up by middle of the month. Beginning March 1st, there will be a contractor on property working to enclose the patio area of the restroom on #14/17. The work should only take about 7-10 days to complete. This enclosure will be very similar to the new restroom on #7. Once completed, a new ice and water dispenser will be installed identical to the one on #7. Richard Pavlasek, CGCS General Manager

5 Golf Talk It is often a topic of conversation during tournament season as to why handicaps have to be reduced for those who are playing from a different set of tees than the majority of the field. The question is typically My handicap is established from those tees so why does it need to be reduced?. Different tees typicall have a different USGA Course Rating. Rule (3-5) in the USGA Handicap System Manual states Because a USGA Course Rating reflects the probable score for a scratch golfer, the higher-rated course is more difficult, and the player playing from the set of tees with the higher USGA Course rating either receives additional stroke(s) or the rest of the field is reduced stroke(s) equal to the difference between each USGA Course Rating, with.5 or greater rounded upward. The additional or reduced stroke(s) are adjusted to the players Course Handicap. At Westhaven Golf Club, we utilize the adjustment for all of our member tournaments by reducing the handicaps of those playing from a set of tees that is rated lower than the majority of the field. In most cases, the majority of the field at Westhaven Golf Club is competing from the Blue Tees and all other players playing from the Green, White or Red tees are reduced equal to the difference in the course rating from the Blue Tees. Those competing from the Gold Tees receive additional strokes from those competing from the Blue Tees. Why is the adjustment necessary if my handicap is established from a certain set of tees? This is a great question that is often asked and the answer is fairly simple. Although you have established your handicap from a certain set of tees at Westhaven Golf Club, the handicap system treats your set of tees compared to the other set of tees the same as if you are playing a different golf course at a different location. As a result, the handicap system establishes your index based on the course rating and slope of your golf course compared to the course rating and slope of the Blue Tee golf course. For example, if two players shoot a score of 80 each time they play and one player competes from the Blue Tees and one from the Green Tees, both players will have a different handicap index. The player competing from the Blue Tees will have a handicap index of 6.7 and a course handicap of 8. The player competing from the Green Tees will have a handicap index of 9.3 and a course handicap of 11. If those players competed in an individual stroke play event utilizing full course handicaps and both players shot a gross score of 80, the player competing from the Blue Tees would score a net score (with handicap) of 72 and the player competing from the Green Tees would score a net score of 69. If the player competing from the Green tees is reduced the proper amount of strokes relative to the difference in the course rating between the two tees, the Green Tee player s net score would now be 72 which is equal to the player from the Blue Tees who shoots the exact same score each time. As you can see, handicap adjustments are necessary to ensure a more equitable handicap system for tournament play or friendly competitions within your respective groups. If you have any questions regarding handicap adjustments or the handicap system, please feel free to contact me or a member of the Golf Professional Staff. Chris Cauthen PGA Head Golf Professional

6 Difference March 2016 Chef Note As some of you may have noticed, we have made some changes in the kitchen. With my new title as Chef de Cuisine, I am implementing new standards in the kitchen to raise the bar of food quality, plate presentation, and most of all incredible flavor. I appreciate any feedback in this time of transition as I am creating new specials, a new spring menu, and better banquet and tournament menus. Speaking of specials, the Fish and Chips special this week seemed to sell really well. So, I thought I would share the recipe! Fresh Alaskan Cod cut into about 3-4 oz portions Seasoned Flour 1 cup all-purpose flour ¼ tsp garlic powder ¼ tsp onion powder 1/8 tsp ground mustard ¼ tsp black pepper Pinch cayenne pepper Fish batter 1¾ cups water 2 cups all-purpose flour ½ tsp salt ¼ tsp baking soda Place water in mixer with whisk attachment. Turn mixer on low, and beat in flour, salt, and soda. Strain through a fine mesh sieve set over a large bowl. Dip Cod into seasoned flour and then batter. Heat oil until it reaches 360 degrees. Carefully place cod into heated oil. Fry until golden and crisp, about 7 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and sprinkle with salt. Serve immediately with desired sauces. ENJOY!!! Heather Henderson Chef de Cuisine

This association is made up of men from participating private clubs in the Nashville area. This association plays participating clubs once a week starting in April and finishing in October. Play days are typically on Thursday of each week. Some of the local clubs that are involved include Richland CC, Temple Hills CC, Brentwood CC, Hillwood CC, Governor s Club, Legends, Old Natchez CC, Nashville Golf and Athletic, Old Hickory CC, Foxland Harbor, Bluegrass, Fairvue Plantation and Five Oaks CC. The Hideaway at Arrington has been added as a new club this season. In addition, two other clubs, Gaylord Springs and Greystone Golf Club, are played at reduced rates. Most of the private clubs are played twice during the season. There are a total of 32 play dates. The cost to join the association is $200 and each play date is $40 per round. This cost also includes an opening luncheon to be held at Richland Country Club on March 31st and a closing banquet to be held at Hillwood Country Club on November 3rd. Box lunches and/or a buffet after play are served at some of the clubs on specific play dates. Contact Chris Cauthen, Head Golf Professional, in the golf shop if you would like an enrollment form for the association. For more information about the association, contact Walter Keith at wk4@comcast.net or Founders Cup The Founders Cup season-long points race will return again in 2016 with a tournament experience similar to the PGA TOUR s FedEx Cup. Tournaments are awarded with Founders Cup Points throughout the year. Players will be competing in each event to see who is on top of the point standings at the end of September. There are 8 tournaments on the 2016 Founders Cup Points schedule and each one is important to your outcome in the Cup. Points for each tournament are divided out based on a player s best NET or Gross FINISH in the field. Only the Top 30 in the Founders Cup Points race qualify to play in the Founders Cup Championship (Net Stroke Play Event). For this Playoff, all points will be cleared and new amounts will be reallocated to each player based on the persons finish in the Points standing. The player on top of the Point List after the Playoff is the Founders Cup Championship winner. Prizes will be awarded to the top 9 players in the final standings following the Founders Cup Championship. The Founders Cup is open to all members with full tournament privileges to include Full, Executive, Junior, Corporate, Emeritus and National members. Associate and Academy members are not eligible for the Founders Cup. The following events will be included in the Founders Cup Standings: The Dogwood Member-Member Memorial Day Tournament Club Championships The Firecracker Open Par 3 Championship Alternate Shot Championship Labor Day Scramble Championship For more information on the tournament schedule, go to the member website under the Golf and Tournament section.
