1 CELEBRATING 19 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Seattle Chapter - American Singles Golf Association May 2012 President's Corner April has turned out to have a lot of sunny days for golf. Yea! Many thanks to Jeanette Kelley and Sorell Fischer for hosting an event at Mt. Si on the 15th. Great turnout and a perfect day for golf! Our postponed event for Allenmore took place on the 22nd. That also turned out to be a gorgeous day for golf. Kudos to Stu Boyd and Sorell Fischer for planning this fun event and taking us to Engine House #9 for dinner afterwards. An original early 1900's fire station. George Weller and Carolyn Hanley are hosting our next event at Snoqualmie Falls on the 29th. The forecast is for great weather again. Upcoming in May is Useless Bay on Whidbey Island on the 5th hosted by Kent Christenson and Lynnwood on the 20th hosted by Virginia DeVos and Florence Solt. These are both fun courses so hope you will sign up to join us. Welcome to new members Shirley Danielson, Bob Strom and Sofia Counter! Si Dawn broke over the foothills of the Cascade mountains as it usually does in the morning. There in the heart of Mt. Si country stood 32 eager ASGA golfers ready to begin the club's golf season on one of the most beautiful courses this area has to offer. It was goldilocks weather: not too hot--not too cold but just right. Our ASGA club banner flew high and proud announcing for all who could see it that ASGA was here to challenge the mountain. And that we did. Fortified with delicious handmade cookies and nutritious commercially made fruit bars we began 4X4 to have one of the most enjoyable golfing days this club has seen since last Fall. We were all winners on this day but is our custom there were a couple of contests to keep the collective feet to golf's fire. Winners of the paired putting contest were: First place Brian Lucarelli and Susan Mayon. Second place Virginia DeVos and Sue Haley. The blind hole winners were: First place Tab Bronson and Greg Brace. Second place Adrienne Moe and Jann Sheridan. ~Jeanette Kelley Allenmore Golf Event We all agreed. Sunday, April 22 nd was a much better day for golf than March 31 st when we first attempted to play. Twenty sun worshippers turned out for our first warm and dry outing of the season. We all found our way to the first tee even though the club house was about to be torn down, the pro shop was in a portable trailer and, for a while, they ran out of golf carts. Not the best of circumstances, but the sun seemed to make up for it. Competition results are as follows: KP Hole #2 for Men--Lynn Johnson KP Hole #2 for Women No winner so Susan Mayon s name was drawn for the prize (very appropriate because she had a birdie on #16!) KP Hole #2 from the drop area Pat Walsh KP Hole #12 Men Jack Toker and Bob Strom tied Women Karen Kohler Best Nine minus ½ handicap Men - Lynn Johnson Women - Pat Bonner Also worth mentioning is Don Vadset getting a birdie on hole #8. When we finally got our food, it was pretty good and everyone was enjoying each others company. Thanks to Stu Boyd and Karen Kohler for a great job. Nine N Dine Heron Links at Wollows Run, Redmond, June 7th There will be a Nine n Dine evening at the executive course at Willows Run Golf Complex in Redmond. Heron Links is ranked as one of the best 3-par courses in the state. We have tee times reserved for 5:00 PM on June 7 th. After we play, we will have dinner at the Fire Creek Grill at the north end of the complex. Play for fun and short game practice. Heron Links is a challenging little course. Bring extra balls in case you find water or bushes. Come early to practice putting, chipping and sand shots. sorellfischer@comcast.net to signup. The deadline is Wednesday, May 30 th. Pay at the course: $12.60 or $10.31 for seniors 60+. Pull carts are available for $4. Upcoming Golf Events The weather is beginning to improve and therefore our golf game can t be far behind. Can it? Our golf schedule is kicking into high gear and here are a few upcoming outings for your consideration. May 5 th the club will be golfing at Useless Bay, if we only knew which island it s on. After checking an atlas and an AAA guide book, I discovered that Useless Bay is on Whidbey Island. Where is Whidbey Island? It is above the water. This is encouraging and an incentive to play there, because I hate playing golf under water. Deadline to sign up is April 25 th, so the deadline may have passed before you read this. However, maybe you can still get in. Cost is $55 with the first tee time at 12:30 pm. Many thanks to Kent Christensen for hosting this event. May 20 th we move to Lynnwood golf course, which is located surprisingly in Lynnwood. The Lynnwood golf course is a little smaller course, but has some challenging holes and a little water to avoid on a few holes. The course is located behind a college, so you can attend a few classes and improve your knowledge and golf game at the same time. Deadline to sign up is May 10 th. Cost is $41 with a first tee time at 11:00 am. Virginia DeVos and Florence Solt will be hosting this event. On June 2 nd we are going to Northshore. You would think that Northshore would be north of Southshore, but as far as I know there is no Southshore, nor even a shore for that matter. Northshore is located at the very north of Tacoma and Pierce County. At this event Pat Walsh has agreed to implement the Ryder Cup competition format. This means it will be the men against the women. In prior years the men won once and the women have won once. A man will be matched against a woman in each match. Whoever wins the most holes in their match wins a point for their team. If a match is tied, each team gets half a point. The team with the most points after all the matches wins and gets to keep the trophy plus bragging rights. The prior two competitions were very close. Handicaps come into play, but if you don t have one, you can still participate. In fact you should feel lucky that you are not handicapped like the rest of us. Deadline is May 21 st. Cost is $45 with a 1:00 pm shotgun start. Pat Walsh and Bruce Bishkin will be hosting. Druids Glen is on the schedule for June 16 th with a deadline of June 6 th. Jeanette Kelley will be hosting. She and Sorell Fischer did such a great job at Mt. Si that we are now expecting even a greater result at Druids Glen from Jeanette. However, Jeanette, if you do not meet our expectations, you will be forced to listen to a two hour lecture from Brian Lucarelli on putting. On June 23 rd and June 24 th we have our trip to Leavenworth and Highlander in Wenatchee. More about that in next month s issue. Karen Kohler wanted me to mention that the Home Course has been added to the golf schedule for July 15 th. Deadline will be July 5 th. More information will follow in next issue. 3 Golf Tip In front of the green on the apron and looking at an uphill 35-yard shot to a flagstick at the back of the green? If you're thinking about hitting a wedge and landing the ball at the hole, there might be an easier solution. Use a 5 or 6-iron or even a hybrid and run the ball uphill. Two things could happen using a wedge. You are asking your skill level to land the ball in a very small target area near the hole and the chances of getting a wedge to kick forward uphill is also very difficult. Minimize difficulty and maximize success. (Hey, this could be a life lesson, too!) 4 CELEBRATING 19 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION MAY, 2012 Ireland Update Sixty (60) members have signed-up for the Ireland trip, July We will spend three days in Dublin, three in Killarney and three in Limerick. You d fly into Dublin but return home from Shannon Airport near Limerick. When online registration is available, please have your roommate sign-up the same time you do. Details at Ireland Killarney Golf & Fish Club, Site of 2011 Irish Open and one of the courses we ll play in July. A tradition established years ago at our Memorial Day weekend event, members of the American Singles Golf Association have taken time out at our Saturday evening dinner to recognize members who have served in the Armed Forces. Memorial Day should be a time to remember, recognize and honor those who have fought for those things which we now take for granted, freedom being our utmost prize. This year, instead of just recognizing members during our event in Pinehurst, we re establishing a web page to honor our member veterans. Any veteran of any service era are invited to submit a brief bio about themselves and what involvement they had. We will post this in late May and send out an announcement to all members to go to the site and personally show your thanks for what they have contributed. We ask chapter leaders to send out notices to members asking them to go to and complete a short form. This site will be live on May 10 and ready for contributions from our veteran members. Join Fellow Members in Pinehurst for Memorial Day Weekend! Event Dates: Thursday, May 24 Sunday, May 27, 2012 We re just about a month away from our annual Memorial Day Weekend and participation is already up to 150 members, well ahead of registration same time last year. If you ve never been to Pinehurst, think of it as America s Golf Headquarters. Site of the 51 Ryder Cup and past and future U. S. Opens, you ll feel the history the moment you walk into the Carolina Hotel. Was Donald Ross thinking of you when he planned his courses? Maybe, but your fellow members are thinking of you and hoping you ll attend. So find a roommate or we ll get you one. This reunion on Memorial Day Weekend has shown to be ASGA s largestattended event each year. Optional rounds on the day-of-arrival (Thursday at Pinehurst) as well as day-of-departure (Sunday at Tobacco Road Golf Club Rated #4 Public Course in the U. S. by Golf World magazine and a Top 100 Golf Digest) are being offered as well. A registration form is enclosed will be enclosed with this newsletter and will allow you to register online. Do it now before rooms sell-out! Did You Know??? Your chapter leaders have the ability to send out s to its members using the national database. If a member joins on Monday, a chapter leader can send out a memo on Monday night. Is your chapter communicating using the service we provide and you pay for? Each chapter has an obligation to provide to members a monthly newsletter. Your chapter writes, ASGA National sends it out. This newsletter is also your PR piece to potential members. Communicating solely by blurbs doesn t give leaders the opportunity to thank volunteers in a meaningful way. Failing to produce a newsletter will cause your chapter to lose your portion of the dues. This is a mandatory service that must happen each month. ASGA recently switched to a new service, icontact.com. They're great to work with but they have strict rules. Recently, all of our Yahoo members were taken off the national list because when we sent out an , more than.1% (yes, that's point one percent, or one-tenth of one percent) of Yahoo members complained that they were receiving spam from us. As you know, we don't send out spam, ham or lamb. So, just to make certain you are on the ASGA National list, go to We know you're a member, but use this form as it gets you back on the list. Only members with Yahoo.com addresses need to do this. Every ASGA chapter is born with a set of bylaws. The bylaws outline how chapters should be run. Your Board of Directors is essentially in control of how things are decided within your chapter. A chapter without bylaws is like playing golf without rules.
