We still need volunteers! Anyone interested in more information contact Vivian Mack at vmack53@wildblue.net or Ontario Competitive Trail Riding Association (OCTRA) ECAHS was recently contacted by a representative of OCTRA asking if we would consider making ECAHS Achievement Awards at one of their rides. At the Board of Director's meeting on May 20, 2017, the BOD approved OCTRA awards for a 2018 event that includes 80k (50 mi), 120k (75 mi) and 160k (100 mi) rides. 4 PAGE 4 ECAHS participated in the 3rd Annual Powhatan Celebration of the Horse on Saturday, May 6th at the Rocky Oak Farm in Powhatan. The event was attended by many locals, and sponsored by clubs and corporations large and small. There was a horse show, games for kids, trick riders, carriage rides, livestock demonstrations and a number of other attractions, as well as concessions and a silent auction, to which ECAHS donated $100 worth of product, ECAHS had a booth, which we were given at no charge, as we are a not for profit organization. We put together a scaled down display from what we would usually do for the Crabbet Celebration, since our audience was more diverse. We mostly provided informational packets about ECAHS as well as Arabian Horse and Crabbet related give-aways. We had the opportunity to speak with several people and had at least two to sign up for additional information. We rarely make much money at these events, but we did take in a total of $10 for the sale of a pack of Antez/ Roda playing cards and a Beyond Oats cook book. Many thanks to Vivian Mack, and Jane Peple for assisting with the booth, along with my other half, John Bobb.

7 PAGE 7 News from Ravenhill Arabians: May has been a busy month here in PA, starting with a new arrival on May 7th. No, not a baby, but an SCF Magic Nizzam mare out of a mare bred by Terry Aldred Kerr (TDA Luminaria). Rowdi Magic Sundancer is ECAHS certified 94.66% Crabbet and so far has proven to be a quick study in learning about life outside of the field she lived in for the last eight years. If all goes well she'll be making the trip to Maryland for the Celebration in August. The weekend after that adventure it was off to a horse show for Ravenhill Tsornin+. In spite of the torrential downpours the day before and the ponds in the dressage arena we had two good rides and ended up winning both classes with scores in the 60's and were reserve champion for first level (based on scores, not placings). Memorial Day weekend was back to endurance horse mode for Scutch at the inaugural NY Adventure Trail ride held in Brookfield, NY. This was a very tough ride due to the extremely muddy trail conditions in the woods. We sacrificed an EZ Boot glove to the mud gods and managed to finish the 30 mile LD with 10 minutes to spare. Both Scutch and his riding partner Fina ate and drank very well, handled the Rowdi Magic Sundancer May 25th mud, creek crossings, downed trees and wooden bridges with no problems and were still full of energy at the end. While the weather was overcast the ride management and volunteers outdid themselves keeping everything going smoothly and if we hadn't known this was their first time doing it, we never would have guessed. June will be back to dressage but if all goes well we'll be going to Vermont for the Moonlight in Vermont endurance ride in July. 8 PAGE 8 The Great West Coast Lifetime Award Winner and National Park Tour Bill Noonan True Blue Arabians My son, Will, and I flew into San Diego, California and rented a car for our 12 day great adventure. We flew into San Diego because we planned to spend the final three days at McNeil Arabians in Alpine, California. Our first stop was Stockton, California because that was only 20 minutes from Phara Farm and Annette Weber. Unfortunately, Annette has some health issues and was not able to host us. As per a phone conversation, she has two horses left and has some straws from them. No more live covers. Will and I moved on to Yosemite National park. On the way, we crossed over Jack Tone Ranch Road. We were tempted to detour but we had a very tight schedule. Yosemite was fantastic. May and June is a great time to visit because of the snow melt. It makes the waterfalls even more spectacular. I would highly recommend a visit to this park. We then moved on to Carson City, Nevada. The drive from the national park to Carson City was even more spectacular than in the park. Many snow capped mountains and a lot of snow along the road. Carson City is not what you would expect from Nevada. It is in the foot hills of the great mountains, not the desert as I expected. The trip from Carson City to Doyle Arabians in Bend, Oregon was mainly through high desert with great panoramic views. We arrived at Terry and Rosemary's in the early evening. We set up housekeeping in what Rosemary described as a rustic cabin. By the end of our 4 days there, we renamed it the cozy cabin. We had a quick tour of the horses and barn, dinner and off to bed. Early the next morning, I rode with Terry to an endurance ride. He is breaking in a younger gelding to ride. He has decided to breed his mare that he has had so much success with. Will and Rosemary joined us later and were there at the end of the ride. It was great to see all of the warm greetings and great sportsmanship among all of the competitors. The next day Rosemary suggested that we visit Robbi Pruitt. This was a great addition to our trip. She is still breeding Gulastra related horses with great success. She has a new colt just weeks old. Her mare band was impressive. Several very interesting stallions. Rick Synowski lives about a mile away but we did not have time to visit. Robbi let me hold one of her many Tevis Cup completion buckles. It was neat. She also presented me with a picture with 6 generations of Gulastra stallions. Very cool! She also gave me a copy of the CMK Heritage Catalogue IV. She is a true horsewoman who is doing some great work with a horse rescue organization. The next visit was to see Dee Van Gilder. The Van Gilder ranch covers some 3000 acres. Dee greeted me at the home farm. I drove passed it first but then I saw three very Arabian looking horses close to the road, a stallion and two mares. Right in the front yard was an enclosure with two mares and their foals, a filly and a colt. I liked them both. The dam of the colt is a BL Majestic Gold mare. She has produced very well in the Van Gilder program. We traveled all over the place, seeing a couple of mares here, several yearlings and two year olds there. It was fantastic. Great lady continuing the program that her mother and grandmother started. She does a great job training the foals so they are easy to handle when people buy them. Continued on next page
9 PAGE 9 Back to the Doyle's, spent some time in the pastures with some mares. All of the horses are very uniform. This would be expected because they all trace back to the original 3 horses that Terry's father purchased to start the program. We were very fortunate to meet the Doyle's daughter, son in law and precious granddaughter. All in all, a great experience even though Will tried to roast me in the cabin with the wood stove each night.. Rosemary recommended highly that we visit Crater Lake National park. This is the deepest lake in the US. Crater Lake was beautiful! The darkest blue you will ever see. There is a 30 mile road around the rim that we could not use because there was so much snow this year. They expect the road to finally be open some time in July. We could only travel on about a 1/2 mile of shoreline but it was worth it. Next, the west coast rocket traveled to Redwood National Park. We spent the night at a motel in the park. The redwoods are so tall you almost cannot grasp how tall they are, some 250 to 300 feet. It is definitely a park that you should camp and hike in. Probably 3 to 7 days would be best. We just scratched the surface. Our next stop was Cantrell Arabians. Jewell and her daughter Rene did a super job of showing us the horses. Three really really nice foals by Honkytonk Cowboy. The horses have a lot of white but they are great. Very free movers with good size and a unique look that traces down from Aurab and Ben Rabba. Rene has a 15.2 or 15.3 hand gelding that would be a perfect riding horse for me. Big but has lost none of the Arabian type. There is also a very interesting black mare that had a stunning filly. The three foals this year were all keepers but two and possibly three are already sold. Watch out for Jewel! She can market her horses!! Our last stop was to visit my old friends, Pete and Paula McNeil. By this time, Will and I needed some space. Luckily for us, Pete and Paula have two guest houses. I didn't like seeing Pete confined to one room due to mobility problems but we made the best of it. We talked horses of course. His mind is sharp as a tack. We also watched some Padres games. I took many pictures of his horses that are still there and he also enjoyed pictures of the other ranches on the trip. Many of his horses are up at Whitegates Ranch with Elayne Loria. He still has many good ones at home. I especially liked two young mares, Rose of Tralee and Paula's mare, Xcapade. We had a great three days with Pete and Paula. Paula spoiled us, as usual and I gained a few pounds. All in all, this was a very special trip. It proved to me, once again that the Honorees Committee is doing an excellent job choosing our Lifetime Achievement award winners. Photos on next page

12 PAGE 12 From Va. Kelsall In the April newsletter we reported on the Cheshire Competitive Trail Ride using their results which have the 26 Mile Ride divided into 3 weight divisions with a Champion and a Reserve Champion. The judges are asked to break ties. The Eastern Competitive Trail Ride Association, on the other hand in their results do not break ties. Their official results list the horses first through eighteenth. These are the results they use when calculating points for their awards. This year three of the first five placings went to Crabbet certified or eligible Crabbet certified Arabians. Second - Cynthia Nelson's Sandarac CY 81.29% Crabbet.
