2 DC S REPORT The Beach Ride Having survived gale force winds, sideways rain and a couple of good rears (and thank god I put a saddle on her) Patch and I actually really enjoyed the beach ride down at Carrum on Sunday morning - Oh! Did I mention we had to get up on a Sunday at 5.30am!? Breakfast was good too. It was all worth it to see the girls having a ball on their horses, splashing in the water - especially Georgia's sterling effort of a full-body splash (ha ha). I was very sensible and we only got up to our knees wet. All in all, a great morning and thanks to Rob East for organising it. Warning - never convoy with Rob, unless you've got turbo or a compulsion to speed!! Okay, so we had to keep stopping to close the float door! I think we were the first home though!!! Fred Davies Award This rally we have organised the judging of the Fred Davies first thing in the morning and it's a highly regarded award for the year that was unfortunately delayed due to EI. The rally starts as usual at 9.30am and we expect you lined up your cleanest and neatest on the dot. Please take care to clean your uniform, tack and mount and make sure your gear is all safe. Groups will be judged first then those who place first will have 15mins to prepare for the Fred Davies presentation. All riders are to attend in support, once they have secured their horses. Riders who came first will then be judged again and the overall winner presented with the Fred Davies award. Start cleaning and good luck. Fancy Dress Also held traditionally at the December Rally we have our Fancy Dress instead this rally. It will be held after lunch at 1.30pm. So bring your costume and dress up to a theme, both yourself and your horse. We have had some very original ideas over the years and some that we see every year and are still just as good. So don t be shy, it s amazing what you can do with a few bits and pieces and sure, Mum and Dad won t mind if you borrow their stuff ha ha Oh and I must say, it s surprising what those horses will put up with or not! Tooradin Thank you for all the interest in this event and those of you who responded, your entries are going in this week. Please make sure if you haven t paid that you bring the entry fee to this rally and pay Warren in the morning. Thank you to the parents who volunteered themselves to Cross Country Judging and Show Jumping Crash Crew duties. And a big thank you to the parent (please don t let it be Rob again someone new I hope) who will travel down the Saturday before our rally to attend the working bee on behalf of the club. Camp I hope you can all make it to camp this year. It should be fun and a relaxing break. The meal on the Saturday night is probably the best I get all year and a communal effort that s very social. There s the beach ride on the Saturday morning with the opportunity to see some of the parents who don t normally ride doing their Man From Snowy River along the beach and the Sunday morning watching them groaning around as they find all these muscles they never new they had along with a healthy respect for their children. Of course if you re going I don t recommend you follow Rob unless you can keep up and I don t recommend you follow me as I always get lost. I will see you all at the rally. Don t forget to let me know if you can t come as this helps plan the groups. We have a full stable of instructors this rally and I know this will be good. Apart from the Fred Davies in the morning and Fancy Dress after Lunch we will have 3 full riding sessions and this may mean the day will end later than usual. Please be prepared for this possiblility and most of all enjoy your day. Eleanor Young. Page 2
3 President s Report 2008 has certainly kicked off and jumped to a great start, with Madi Edes successfully competing at Eastfield Park earlier this month qualifying for the Southern Metro team to compete at the 2008 State and Dressage Championships at Elmore next month. Congratulations also go to Rebecca McDougall for her fine effort in the Grade 1 event at Eastfield Park. The next local competition is our Southern Metro Zone competition at Tooradin on March 16. This is a great event providing a good opportunity to try out all three phases of equestrian competition with the cross country event always providing excitement for competitors and spectators alike. I would encourage you all to give it a go. Last Sunday saw an intrepid group of six riders tackling the big waves at Seaford beach with a spectacular wipe out being demonstrated by Georgia Spangaro. When a horse doesn t want to go in to the water she will certainly tell you so. Undaunted by one spill Georgia led Shelley East, Rachel Kreamer, Jessica Turner and Bonnie Ennis Evans into the waves of Seaford beach while our rather more constrained and drier DC Eleanor rode on the sand. Rachel s style of cantering through the belly deep waves had to be seen to be believed. If anyone knows where you can buy a mask and snorkel for a horse please let Rachel know. March 28 th 30 th is the date for our annual camp at Golden Valley ranch at Main Ridge, this is a great event and I would urge all club members to come along. On the Saturday there is the opportunity to challenge the waves on the beach at Gunnamatta either on your own horse or on a hired mount. For the Sunday we are currently liaising with the Main Ridge pony club to gain access to their XC grounds which are really great with a wide range of jumps over an undulating course. The Nunawading riders will be joining us this year so it should be a camp to remember. I would like to thank Steve Cook for coordinating the Grounds Guys, which are those parents who help keep our Pony Club grounds in prime condition. At each rally parents will be involved in cutting, pruning, weeding, landscaping or planting so please don t wait to be asked jump in and lend a hand. See you at the next rally Rob East MONASH PONY CLUB EVENTS CALENDAR nd June 2008 Combined Training Day 24th August 2008 Show Jumping Day 23rd November 2008 Mini ODE (Grade 4 & 5) Page 3
4 PASTING WORMERS Wormers will be available at this rally to purchase. The cost is $20 per wormer. This will give you 2 doses per horse or 3 doses per pony. Please see Anna Cameron to buy your wormer. This will also help raise funds for our pony club. POO PICK UP Please ring Eleanor to let her know if you won t be attending this month s rally. Telephone This is extremely important so we have the correct number of instructors available for the day. Could all members please remember to pick up their horse s manure at the end of each rally especially on the bitumen area. There is a wheelbarrow and shovel available in the compound area where all our equipment is stored. Thanks! DRESSAGE & SHOW JUMPING LESSONS Laura Thorbecke will be conducting a dressage and showjumping clinic at Drummies Bridge Reserve on Saturday 1 st March (the day before next pony club rally). Lessons will be 1 hour in length, and $30 for a private or $20 for a shared, and can be dressage, showjumping or a combination of both. We will have a competition-style showjumping course and a dressage arena set up: great practice for Tooradin, or just to brush up on your skills. For bookings or more info.
