In short, Sophie Brown won the compound junior ladies class to become National Champion while David Fall and Grace Butterfield won bronze, Sophie and David both contributed to England s win in the seniors Home Nations match with Daisy Clark of Chelmsford and Sam Baldwin of Burleigh. Please note that Daisy, Sophie and David were all junior archers at the time. The rest of the junior team did pretty well also. Further, David Fall and Phil Glover between them managed to outshoot the nations top three compound archers over the weekend with Phil s nemesis being number 4, Adam Ravenscroft. In the senior head to head rounds, David managed to equal Chris White 5 5 in sets winning on a close one arrow shoot off and Phil outshoot Liam Grimwood the same way, but took it to a second arrow shoot off to eventually lose to Adam Ravenscroft in the quarter finals. Phil also beat Duncan Busby in the Back 2 back rounds Phil to eventually came second to... Adam Ravenscroft in the money prizes. Oh well, that s life, but watch out Adam, Phil is already tired of this format. In all of this, we mustn't forget the successes of other Mayflower seniors. Michael Judd was placed 3rd and part of the winning regional (SCAS) recurve team. Mike also won all his groups in the back 2 back to give Alan Wills a hard time in the semi finals, but to finish 3rd, also with prize money. The 2nd placed Club compound team went to Mayflower with Phil, David, Helen Harris and James Howell. We needed 10 more points for Mayflower to win the club compound team trophy. We came 2nd last year! All in all, not a bad weekend for Mayflower, especially the compound crew! I wish I d been there! Reports on the inside pages and thank you to everybody who took the time to write them. Good shooting, Roger

2 Tournament Round up In order to simplify the newsletter and make it more interesting, I will not be searching the internet for tournament results, except for major or local events and writing stuff I don t know about. Instead, I will be relying on you all to tell me what you ve all been up to. Consequently, this page will be a lot shorter than it used to be unless you decide otherwise. Photographs will also assist interest please! Junior National Indoor Championships, 1st December For the biggest junior indoor tournament of the year, 300 young archers lined up to Shoot a Portsmouth round in an attempt to win national awards. Since the junior, senior and back to back tournaments have been on the same weekend, I personally think it s a brilliant weekend for any archery enthusiast. Mayflower fielded their usual team of enthusiasts to gain some respectable places. Rackets Worcester, 11 th December Unusually, this event was not well supported by Mayflower members this year. However, Mayflower did manage a couple of entries with good results. Bill Whybrow Jun Gent Recurve nd James Howell Jun Gent Compound st If you missed it and fancy trying a Worcester round, there are more this season. See Tournament Diary Coming of age, Sam By the time you read this Sam Yeates will be aged 18 and a senior member of the club. Sam was popular in his years as junior captain, but for personal reasons, we haven t seen him much lately. However, we do wish him well in the senior world and hope to see him back soon. Coming of age, David Also, David Fall will be aged 18 and a senior member of the club. As he is now working away from home, you won t see him much, but he will be back from time to time. In the meanwhile, we wish him well in his chosen career and in the senior world of archery in which, he already shows promise. Tournament reports The indoor season has started!! I myself enjoy indoors just as much as outside, Having been through a lot of changes myself this year with new techniques and training, I have noticed as told! My scores have been down and I knew this, but still hard to handle! The indoor season couldn t come quick enough for me! And what better way to start with our club FITA 18!! Oh I forgot 3 silly sized targets!! Maybe not such a good idea! But I was here and I was going to do my best! I was in for the first session, I scored 411 nowhere near my PB but I survived, I then decided to stay for the second session scoring 420, they were getting better so I managed to stay for the third and finished on 436; and a respectable 4 th in the under 18 category. I had a good day, catching up with my archery pals, something you can do easily indoors!! Alex Body Page 2

3 Tournaments and reports This weekend (4 th November, Ed) I travelled to Braintree, having managed to get in last minute! I was booked to shoot in Sussex at a field shoot! But with the weather we decided against that idea! 2 nd session at the Braintree Portsmouth! Not a pleasant, journey roads flooded but we made it! And a decent size target!!! 3 sessions being held, but just the one for me, scoring 520, again not near a PB but I won the session, Having left the shoot, it was later in the evening when I had a facebook message to congratulate me, I had won the under 14 category. But we have had the scores and we did pretty well!! Adults: Graham Owens 31 st Under 18 boys - Bill Whybrow 3 rd Under 14 boys - Alex Body 1 st Under 14 girls -Emily Owens 1 st National Indoor weekend It was a frosty Saturday morning and I was up at Coventry for the biggest weekend of the indoor calendar, I was going to shoot the back 2 back, junior nationals and senior nationals also shooting for England in the seniors and reserve for juniors. It was going to be an eventful weekend. I got up early in the morning, made my way from the hotel to the Ricoh arena, and began back 2 back practice at 9:00. My first match was against Duncan Busby who I lost to 118 to 115 then I proceeded with my other matches some I drew but the others I lost. I wasn't through the cut missing out by whisker just behind Tim Nash by a couple of points. So I waited for around 2 hours and then took my place on the juniors shooting line to stake my claim to the national title. The shooting was going well the score even better but I missed out on my aim by a few points coming third. Missing out on first by two points. Now for the Sunday senior indoor nationals I was shooting for England and the score counted, I shot my ends and wasn't all that happy, but finished eighth for the session and hoping I'd get into the head to heads. After the second session, the cut for the head the heads came out and I had been ranked 29 th. Whilst people practiced the Nationals, team awards were announced and surprisingly England had beaten Scotland's compound team by three points and took the win. After a few ends of practice it was head to head time and I had no idea who I was against. It was Chris White. The sets were to and fro. I'd claim one he'd claim one and finally we ended a draw putting us into a one arrow shoot off. I steadied my nerves and went through the shot. I had just nicked the spider and Chris had lined a ten. I was through! I proceeded to do the same with Andrew Jackson to meet James Bingham who plummed in a solid ten. I just couldn't follow it up, but had made it through to the quarterfinals of the senior indoor nationals and beaten Chris White. I was over the moon. David Fall Robert Whybrow 35 th Family - Rob and Bill Whybrow 4 th and Emily and Graham 4 th Team Mayflower 3 rd!! with Bill Whybrow, Alex Body, Graham and Emily Good day all round, lets put Mayflower back on the map!! 4 Tournament reports, by Sophie Brown 27 th & 28 th October Hawks FITA 18 + head to head and Mayflower FITA 18 After a long week of practising everyday I found myself heading to Hawks FITA 18 plus head to head round. I found that I had got a new personal best of 538 and then proceeded to get into the final stages of the head to head. I ended up in 3 rd place in the head to head. The following day after a long night of doing coursework, I shot 3 more FITA 18's and proceeded to get 3 more pb's; 548,552 and 556. It was a great weekend as it was 4 new pbs in one weekend one very happy Sophie for the weekend. 3 rd November Brighton Bowmen This day was a difficult one. I shot three consecutive FITA 18's single detail with no time for a little sit down or to take a rest. Our longest round took 1 hour 20 mins and my scores were 542, 546 and a 551; not quite the same as the weekend before but was still very good as it was a shoot over two days I was on the Saturday and David Fall and James Howell shot on the Sunday 10 th November Clophill junior Portsmouth This was a lovely shoot there was such a great atmosphere some great shooting was done. I shot my first session with David Fall and my second session with Jon Bull. It was great fun to shot with Jon as he had just broken a national record. My scores showed yet more pb s of 560 and th November Hertfordshire County FITA 25 I slept all the way up to Hertfordshire whilst mum did the driving. We were up by half past 6 and I wanted to shot well. I shot a double FITA 25 with my aim4sport buddy (the shop that sponsors me) and shot a 547 then a 543. I must say the sweets did keep me going. I felt happy when the day was over after getting yet another pb for a FITA 25 and was happy to get home and warm up at last. 1 st & 2 nd December Junior and Senior Indoor Nationals After shooting some great scores throughout the indoor season, I decided to send in my score for England and have been selected as reserve for the juniors as there is only one junior lady compound allowed on the team. But for the senior team, there are two compound lady spaces on the team so Daisy and me seem to be paired up for the weekend. Editor s note; The above was written before the Nationals weekend. The senior Home Nations compound trophy was won by the England team that included Sophie, David Fall and Daisy Clark. All were junior archers at the time. Sophie also won her junior class to become Compound Ladies u18 National Champion. See below. After not shooting for a week I headed to my sponsor, aim 4 sport, to get a few hours practise in. Mum and I had to wake up early the following day, ate breakfast with close friends and their families, and headed to the Ricoh arena where I was to compete in the junior nationals. After spending a few hours catching up with friends that I only get to see a few times a year, it was time to start. I was reserve for the England Home Nations match. My shooting seemed rather average in comparison to normal and I thought I wasn t doing so well at all. At 4 dozen, Paul Clark approached me to see what my score was. I thought he just wanted to see how I was doing so I found my score sheet and told him my score. He then walked away. I was very confused at this point. With three arrows left, he approached me again and stood and watched me shoot my last 3. I was nervous by this point, as I didn t know what was going on. He followed me down to the target and was happy that I had just shot 10,10,10. He then went to Aalin George s target, came back, gave me a hug, said well done and walked off again. I was even more confused at this point, as I didn t know what was happening. A few minutes later, I had my mum, David Fall, Daisy Clark, Rebecca Blewitt and their parents over to say well done. They must have known something I didn t at the time. After 5 minutes, I was told that I may have just become the under 18 champion. I still didn t believe them until I had been told it by Tim Pratt, the organiser that I had won. Then Paul approached me also saying I was National Champion. I was shaking by this point, didn t know what to do and didn t know whom to believe. I didn t think I had it in myself to do it, but I had. It was unbelievable and is still only just sinking in, 3 to 4 weeks after it happened. Page 4

David Fall, James Howell, Jun Gent Compound 1134 Double FITA 18 Triple spot, Brighton, 4 Nov Jun Gent Compound, Double Portsmouth Triple spot, 11 Nov Score and location unknown Mayflower Archers Annual General Meeting I know this sounds boring and all that, but this is your once a year opportunity to voice your opinions, find out what s been happening and elect your club representatives for the next year. It is also when annual awards are made to members who the committee consider have deserved the awards. This year the meeting is to be held on Monday 12 th March at 8:00 pm in room 82, that s a demountable by Sports Hall. All members are welcome and all members are entitled to vote. Come along and bring your member parent. Who knows, you might almost enjoy yourself. Junior Captain At the next AGM, we will announce a new Junior Club Captain. James Howell has had the task for the past year and may hand it to someone else. We want you to select the junior captain; someone who is respected by others, popular with club mates, shoots at tournaments and can provide some basic guidance and leadership. Get together amongst yourselves and tell any member of the junior team who you want so long as that person is happy to be Captain. The catch? The he or she is invited to junior team meetings, to have their say about how you want the junior club to run and what you want from the club. The captain, may, if they wish, nominate a deputy who can accompany them at team meetings. Any volunteers? Get someone to nominate you. If not, the Junior Team will select a Captain for you. Ken Gray Memorial shoot Organised in memory of the founder of Mayflower's junior club, this shoot is a team competition between several local clubs and is intended for the novice junior archer to give some tournament experience. In the past, everybody who has been nervous of taking part as a first competition have thoroughly enjoyed it and some have asked to do it again. As you may know, I ve been Team Manager for Mayflower at this shoot for several years, but Mark Robinson has volunteered to take over for the next event on 9th February. Mark is an ex Mayflower junior, a level one coach and has taken part himself, so knows just how to support you. Mark is now looking for enthusiastic young archers to select for the team and the best way to get chosen is to turn up on a Friday and be known. Page 5

6 Achievement News Good News! I ve just spotted on the Archery GB website that Mayflower have several members on the Archery GB Funded Programme for That means that they may be selected to represent Great Britain at an international competition depending on their performance. Cadet Junior Senior Sophie Brown and James Howell David Fall Philip Glover Other Essex archers that I recognise are: Cadet Luke Wiseman Chelmsford Tudor Rose Junior Daisy Clark Chelmsford Tudor Rose Performance academy programme Sophie Cole Chelmsford Tudor Rose Congratulations and may we wish them all the best and hope they progress to the international circuit. Ps. Sorry if it s supposed to be a secret as only Phil told me of his repeated achievement. Just one more thing, of these, only Sophie Cole is a recurve archer. Come on recurve archers, your nation needs you. Show the compounders how it s done. Club Shirts Lesley is looking to place the next order for club shirts very shortly. Official order forms can be downloaded from the club website and passed to Lesley with the appropriate money. To contact Lesley for enquiries only, telephone or nhowell1@hotmail.co.uk Orders with cheques made payable to Mayflower Archers to be sent to: Mrs. L Howell, 35, Brampton Close, Corringham, Essex, SS17 7NS Owning one is not compulsory, but it does look good when everyone on the shooting line is wearing one. Mayflower Distance Awards These are designed for the new archer to measure their own progress in the early stages. When a given score is attained at a given distance, it is understood that you are competent enough to progress to the next distance. Coloured badges are awarded according to the distance shot and all you need to do is shoot 36 arrows and attain a score of 200 with no misses. The awards are: Black 20 yards; White 30 yards; Blue 40 yards; Red 50 yards; Gold 60 yards; Green 80 yards. There is no fee, no judges or supervisor. Just set the stand with a 122 cm face at your chosen distance, starting at 20 yards anytime you like, record your three scores on separate score sheets, keep them and claim your badge from David Scorah. Archery GB Progress Awards Mayflower have subscribed to this award scheme for juniors. It is designed to provide beginners and younger archers with awards for developing their archery skills and the scheme can also be used as an adult beginner incentive. Badges will be awarded by target face colours, white, black, blue, red and gold according to scores. Scores that need to be attained vary according to age, sex, bowstyle and distance shot. They are more applicable to an outdoor range, but as we are shooting outdoors regularly now there will be opportunities to start during the winter months. See Carron Brown for full details of scores and how to get them. Page 6

7 3D Fun Field Shoot Since Roger and I started these twice yearly Field Shoots in 2006, I believe Saturday's attendance was the largest. I trust you had an enjoyable time and wasn't we lucky with the weather! We spend a rain drenched three hours on Friday preparing the course, leaving Saturday calm and dry and back came the rain that evening- bit of fortunate timing! Thanks to those members who arrived early and helped set up and assisted with the marshalling throughout the day. Special thanks to Lesley who collected the Shoot Fees. With so many helping at the end of the shoot the certificates were out in no time and we were away before the rains came again! Spot the Duck in the water Supporting these events makes the organisation worthwhile, so many thanks and see you at Barleylands. Steve Fenton Editor s note: For date of the next 3D fun shoot see Club Diary page. Details to follow soon so check your s and the club notice board. Halloween Fun Shoot Intended mainly for the younger members, I understand that a lot big kids joined in as well. The scary targets looked even better after dark when the floodlights were turned on. Our thanks to Lesley for organising it all again. Christmas Fun Shoot Here, I had hoped to include some report and photo s of the now popular Christmas Fun Shoot, but due to weather conditions, the state of the field and potential car parking problems in the mud, Steve and I jointly decided that regrettably, it would better to cancel it this year. Apologies to all who were looking forward to it as much as Steve and I. Below are some photo s from previous years and hoping for better next year. Perris Christmas Fun shoot If you didn t know, Perris Archery ran a Christmas fun shoot with gift voucher prizes. Based loosely on the Andy Harris rules, guess what? Mayflower did well again, keeping us on the map. Sophie Brown Jun Lady compound 1st 338 Alex Body Jun Gent recurve 1st 316 Mike Judd Gent Recurve 1st 345 winning on golds, 29 to 24 Phil Glover Gent compound 1st 354 Page 7

8 Andy Harris League The results of the November and December matches haven t reached the County website yet, but having lost our October match against Raydon Hall, Mayflower currently stand in 8th place in division 1. That means that Martin Vidgeon-Hart needs scores from Recurve archers to support Mayflower in the league. When available, results are published on the club notice board, the county website and in these pages. To join in couldn t be easier. Open to junior and senior recurve archers, all you do is go to club on Friday evenings, meet friends and shoot some arrows and pass your score to Martin. Match dates are given on the back page and the round is 3 dozen arrows on a 40 cm face at 15 yards. Perris Junior League The December matches have not reached the Perris website, but in the November matches in the recurve section, team Mayflower with Alex Body, Bill Whybrow and Emily Owens beat West Essex with to be placed 5th in Division 1. In the same match, James Howell and David Fall put Mayflower top of the compound section. A terrific result, but David is now a senior member so we need a replacement. Come on, if you shoot compound, your club needs you and you know you can put in a good score. Again, Martin Vidgeon-Hart needs all the scores he can get. Open to all junior recurve and compound archers. All you need to do just once a month on a Friday evening, is shoot 30 arrows into a 60 cm face at 20 yards and pass your score sheet to Martin. Simple isn t it? Bray League This leagues is open to all junior and senior archers and are team events for compound, recurve and Longbow. However, owing to lack of interest, Mayflower have not entered the Longbow section. Martin will decide which matches your score goes towards, but to be certain, shot the round as many times as you like each month as good archery practice and hand your score to Martin. Results of the November and December matches haven t reached the County website yet, but Mayflower are placed 3rd in recurve division 1 and 4th in compound division 1. A Bray round is to shoot 30 arrows into a 40 cm face at 20 yards and I repeat, to join in couldn t be easier, all you do is go to club on Friday evenings, meet friends and shoot some arrows and pass your score to Martin. Frostbite League Since results are individually based rather than team based and scores are accumulative, we have no results, but in the past, Mayflower have done well in this event. If you prefer outdoor shooting, then you mustn t miss out on this league. There are no match dates so all you need to do is either turn up on the junior / Frostbite dates in the club calendar or shoot the round when you are next at the field. Lesley Howell will collect all your scores, tabulate and submit them. Open to all juniors, seniors and bow styles, all you have to do is to shoot 36 arrows into an 80 cm face at 30 metres. Now how hard can that be? New Year s Honours Hot news! Danielle Brown has been awarded an MBE in the New Year s honours list. Compound archer Danielle (Dani) has been at the top of the sport since being a junior and has been a good ambassador, won Gold medal in this year s Paralympic games. Dani is the second archer to receive an honour after recurve archer Alison Williamson won an MBE in the Queen s Birthday honours list. Page 8

9 Field Shoot Outing to Panther Bowhunters, 26th January 2013 Good news! Steve Fenton has arranged an afternoon s shooting at Panther Bowhunters, probably shooting a Forester round on animal faces to EFAA (English Field Archery Association) rules. The visit is intended for members who otherwise wouldn t have the opportunity to experience field archery and full guidance will be given by Panther members. Briefly, participants will follow a marked course through woodland in groups of four with an instructor. There will be no pressure to be competitive, but just a chance to enjoy a different type of archery. Please advise Steve or me if you wish to join in. If you have already spoken with Steve, you are on the list. Full information will be given in advance. There will be a target fee of 3 per person, payable on the day. Winter Field Archery League Organised by GNAS members for GNAS members like us and is good fun for a Sunday morning. To join in, pre book and turn up at various venues around the South East, including Panther Bowhunters, with your equipment, shoot a 12 target round and you ll be home in time for lunch. Targets are standard FITA Field faces and distances are 5 to 60 m dependant on your age. Your scores will be collected and tabulated such that your best 4 scores are used to gain your overall position in your class. To shoot at Panther contact Neil Bonner at essexarcher@gmail.com General advice can be obtained from Steve Fenton or Roger. Dates, venues and how to take part are given on There is also a booklet describing FITA Field Archery available from Roger Glover. Just him at roger. glover@mayflowerarchers.co.uk and arrange delivery. Go on, you know you want to. GNAS July National postal tournament Results The results as published in October are confirmed, but unlike last year, the trophies arrived just before Christmas so they would have been a nice present as we had hoped to present them at the Christmas Fun shoot. For details, see page 6. In second places were Sophie Brown, James Howell and Alex Body while third places went to Ryan Bishop and Grace Butterfield. Well done to all of them! GNAS November Challenge A poor entry this time, but thank you all for giving me a score to represent Mayflower. A summary of the results submitted are given below and we look forward to the full results being published sometime soon, hopefully. Class Age Bow Type Score Alex Body 3 13 Recurve 332 Emily Owens 7 12 Recurve 303 Grace Butterfield 8 11 Recurve 311 James Howell Compound 350 David Fall Compound 342 Sophie Brown Compound 336 The next postal tournament is the July Nationals. A National round shot of course, in July. Neal and, Lesley will be chasing you for scores again. Page 9
