1 Mayflower Junior Archers From the Editor Junior News Happy New Year to you all. January 2008 Inside this issue: Achievements General News 2 Christmas is over again for another year and I hope Santa brought you everything you wanted, especially all the archery kit you needed. He didn t? Never mind, you ve been saving all you pocket money for that haven t you? If you ve been filling yourselves with all that lovely Christmas food, we ve got a lovely exercise programme planned to help you keep fit. I already know the answer to that, Yeah, right! Seriously though, it s worth keeping fit. Didn t Santa Steve do well? With targets made by courtesy of Bel Adams and food supplied by several club members we had a terrific fun shoot the Saturday before Christmas. (I m not sure who supplied all the food, but Santa Shirley was seen to top up supplies). Those who could attend enjoyed some fun shooting, mince pies, fancy dress and general frivolities. Our thanks go to all members who contributed to make it a fun event. Can we do it again next Christmas Steve? Tournaments and Club diary 3 FITA Award scheme 4 Andy Harris League Midway results General info and Andy Harris December Results 5 6 Inside Story 5 Inside Story 6 It s the spirit of these events that make the club what it is, which I consider to be a friendly, family club as well as a serious tournament archery club. Happy shooting, Roger Field target Mayflower Archers, 1988 to 2008 This year marks the 20th anniversary of Mayflower Archers. The club and junior committees plan some celebratory events to mark the occasion. Watch this space for more information.
2 Achievements Just a few bits of news this time, unless I haven t been told what you ve been up to. We are always willing to share your successes or tournament experiences, so please spare a bit of time to write a few words and I ll add those as well. Just me at re.glover@btopenworld.com or phone Also, the webmaster is always willing to publish good news. Alastair Humphreys Entered Rackett s Worcester tournament on 9th December and wins a Gold medal. Not content with that, Alastair won a session award as well. Well done Jonah Elvidge Shot for two days at NFAS Southern Counties Field Championships to bring home the championship Trophy. Well done Joe, two days of shooting is a feat of endurance as well. And then you find out that George Fenton s name is also on the trophy? SCAS Championships New Outdoor starting time From the start of the outdoor season, which I believe is 12th April, the Junior section meeting time will be 2.00 pm. At a recent committee meeting, it was agreed that this would be a more convenient time for all, including the Junior Team, but the change will be monitored and comments will be noted. Border Archery Seminar 8th February, Brentwood Border are innovators in bow and limb construction and will be giving a talk about bow construction and a demonstration of their products. Should be quite interesting. Find out how bows are developed made. See the club website for full details. Mayflower Field round Instead of the usual 2 x 10 unmarked 3D s our landlord agreed to let us use the dell and tip behind the field to make an excellent 2 x14 round. A hasty remake on my part I only had enough markers and pegs for twelve targets. It s not supposed to be a challenging course, but the change in terrain made for some interesting shots and one day I ll hit the Wolverine in the flat grass as well as all the up and downhill targets. It was good to see Rob Markham shooting again. Lately his bow seems to see less daylight than mine. Well done Steve and I understand that we can do it all again in March. Calling all Parents. Junior Team New members Last year, a small group of parents got together as a focus group for junior interests. This seems to be working in that following a lull in junior activity, things are livening up. Now we want to do more and are looking for some fresh faces with a bit of time and some new input. We meet about six times a year to seek ways of doing more for juniors. The amount of time spent is up to you, but more important is how we can improve the junior section for your child. You don t have to be an archer, but it may help if you know what we are talking about If you are interested in joining us, please contact Steve, Martin, Dave or myself. Otherwise, be prepared for a persuasive tap on the shoulder. Mayflower Field shoot Christmas shoot Mayflower Field shoot Page 2

4 Attention all beginners and juniors. Below are details of a FITA award scheme, which we think is worth participating. It is designed to measure newer archer s ability. David Scorah has agreed to administer the scheme within Mayflower Archers and we anticipate regular workshops to assist in achieving these goals. More info can be obtained from the Junior Team or full details can be obtained from David. Note: This does not replace the current Club badge scheme, but will run parallel to it. FITA Beginner s Awards. Mayflower Archery Club will be introducing this scheme to help with our new and existing juniors and all beginners including adults to help with there development in archery. The FITA Beginner s Award Scheme has been designed to allow beginners in Archery to measure their progress against set standards. Their progress should be encouraged by the clubs and rewarded by the winning of FITA Feather and Arrow pins. The awards are based on three (3) attainments. Performance: Shooting a limited distance with the emphasis on making the target rather than high scores. Skill: Body position, position on line, releasing Knowledge & Know How s. Range safety, basic bow set up The awards are split into two categories: 1) FEATHER AWARDS, for the youngest beginners, under 12 years of age and some disabled beginners. (It is up to the club coach to decide on an archer s eligibility). 2) ARROW AWARDS, these are for pre-teenagers, teenagers and adults. (The pre- teenagers will usually have already gained their feather awards). The FITA Beginner s Award Scheme is designed to reward the beginner at the various stages of their development, from shooting at very short distances 6-10 metres, which is dependent on age, to the shortest indoor distance 18 metres and even further to near 30 metres. The size of the target faces will also vary, for feather awards 80 cm spot face or 40 cm face counting hits only, for arrow awards 80 cm full face using conventional FITA scoring. Feather Award. Arrow Award. Anyone wishing to participate in this programme please contact David Scorah by scorah1@btinternet.com Or telephone him on Page 4

6 The Andy Harris League - December results Well done everyone who has taken part in the League shoots. As you can see from the table below, you won the December match and the mid-league table on page 5 shows that we are currently running second. Not a bad result as some of our matches have been against Seniors. Many thanks to Martin Vidgeon-Hart for organising the Mayflower team and to all those who turned out on 14th December. It s your enthusiasm that makes it all worthwhile. Just a reminder, the remaining shoot dates are, 25th Jan., 29th Feb. and 28th Mar. Keep up the good work everyone. MAYFLOWER JNRS 1169 A.Croft 279. SCAS Championships The Junior Team Junior Liaison Officer Steve Fenton The team Roger Glover Martin Vidgeon-Hart David Scorah Child Protection Officers Wendie Stevens David Scorah Junior Captain Every year, the Junior Liaison Officer selects a junior club member as Junior Captain. He has a job specification, but we ve all had enough of those. What he needs is someone who is respected by others. Somebody who shoots at tournaments, is popular with club mates and can provide some leadership. This year, we thought you as club members would like to choose your own Captain. So, if you think you d like to nominate someone, please talk to any of the team. If you think you d like the job, get someone to nominate you. The catch? The lucky person will be invited to team meetings to tell us how you want the club to run. We would also like a volunteer junior representative on the team so that the Captain is not all by themselves. A deputy if you wish put a name to the position. The next edition of Junior News is planned for early April. Should you wish to contribute, please send your work to Roger in March, preferably by or other electronic format. It saves me writing it again. On the 9th February, Mayflower will be hosting our Ken Gray Memorial shoot and I shall be acting as team manager again. In the past we ve won this tournament, but my main interest is to select archers who are keen, so I m talent spotting. If your not there, you can t be selected. See you at club!
