1 Mayflower Junior Archers Welcome all our new members. Junior News We think we are a friendly club with something for everybody and we will get to know you all in the near future. It may seem very confusing watching all the others shooting different distances and rounds, but come along regularly, meet all the other junior members and they ll help you along the way. If you haven t already been given a copy, there is a free booklet entitled Welcome to Mayflower Archers. It is intended as a guide to new archers to offer some advice regarding starting archery, equipment selection, rounds, rules and competitions. Dedicated junior sessions are 2 to 4 pm every Saturday from April to October where we advise you what s going on and then assist you in your development. Except for Bank holidays, Lesley and Carron are continuing their Monday evening sessions after school. Just turn up from around 4.30 until 6.30 pm where you can ask for advice, get some practice or better, shoot a July National round. See page 6. Some of you have done very well breaking County Records. This in itself is a measure of personal improvement. Keep on trying, only you can improve and enjoy the sport more. Granted, the coaches are there to assist, but it s you who has to do the work so enjoy yourself doing it. It s been a few years since I took my son to the Junior National Championships, (he s bigger than me now and has his own car) but I do remember the fantastic atmosphere made even better when Rob Markham booked a table for all of us and we took over the restaurant, nearly. So may we wish good shooting to all our members travelling to Lilleshall for the Junior National Outdoor Championships. We hope the weather will be kind this year and you have as good a time as I remember. I haven t heard about much about Maurice the Mascot lately. Does he still travel to tournaments? I hope he s not retired or worse still, please don t tell me he s joined another club! Junior National Outdoor Championships Lilleshall 2005

2 Hi Guys So, we are well into the outdoor season and I know you are all doing very well, breaking records, PB s and achieving your goals. The team came second at this year s Havering youth games and second at the West Essex Junior shoot, well done guys with more juniors joining next year the team will be even stronger. The junior National outdoor championships is this weekend at Lillishall National sports centre and we have a great team taking part, good luck to you all and have a great time. I would like to welcome our new members, if you need help or advise about anything, speak to the older archers or one of the coaches, we will always help you that is what we are here for, and who knows, next year you could be taking part in the national championships to. The club runs various award schemes for beginners and improver s, please ask for details if you would like to participate. Don t forget to put in your 3 dozen arrow scores to Carron and your round scores to Martin these will be used towards awards and county rankings. Don t forget junior club runs on Saturday afternoon 2 pm til 4 pm and Monday 4.30 pm til 6.30 pm, this is dedicated time that you can receive extra help and advice from the coaching team as well as meeting other juniors. If anyone has any ideas they would like the junior committee to discuss, don t forget to pass these on to you junior captain James Howell, he is your voice at these meetings. Look forward to catching up with you all soon, keep up the good work and have fun! Neal Howell Junior Liaison officer Club Championship round 30 th June Mayflower s third Championship round could be better supported, but a few of the possible entrants were at the National Series event at Lilleshall. However, the rest of the usual enthusiastic members took part on a mostly sunny, but very windy day to make it another success. Despite being a competition, run as closely to FITA rules as we could, most members approached it with a light hearted attitude out to enjoy the day. Not withstanding the odd incident, Judge Steve Fenton, having 5 targets wanting adjustment to arrow values in one go, then ran out of red pen. (not surprised at that rate). Ryan Bishop was definitely aiming high and in doing so managed to score a gold in the flag. Sorry Ryan, it doesn t count as a 9, 10 or X. In the end, we completed the round and got the results out in a timely manner except due to a printer operator error (me), Steve was reading the results out of order. Oh well, everyone got their medals and seemed to enjoy the event anyway. Roll on next year. Shall we make it a double FITA 720? Results and photo s are on the club website, see report to follow. 3 Tournament Round up Woodford Archers Open Clout Championships 7 th April A creditable attendance by Mayflower Juniors at a different style of shoot where you aim at a 4 yard diameter target on the ground at some distance marked by a flag at it s centre. Report by Alex Body on page 7 Chippenham Archery Club, Double Fita, 14 th /15 th April 2012 This is something new for Mayflower members. Although this event has been run for a few years, it s the first time I ve know Mayflower to enter. Well done to the two travel hardy members and their travel weary parents, but probably worthwhile for the Gold medals they brought home. 1 st Sophie Brown Metric II st Alex Body Metric III st Daisy Clark Chelmsford TR Ladies FITA It might be worth mentioning that the 2 nd placed compound lady and Lady Paramount, Pauline Burfitt went on to represent Great Britain at a European Grand Prix in Cyprus in June, win her class and bring home an individual Gold medal and Mixed Team Gold medal for GBR. I ve met Pauline on several occasions and she s a very nice person with a well earned double Gold. Report on page 7. Cyprus n page 9. Panther Bowhunters 24 Target FITA Field Mixed round, 21 st & 22 nd April Something different for the enthusiast, a 2 day field round through some beautiful woods shooting 12 marked and 12 unmarked distance targets each day with every target at a different distance and face size. Those that entered the County Field Championships last year know all bout field archery, don t you? All this and not too far from home. Panther Bowhunters, based in West Hanningfield, specialise in field archery and run this event annually along with the County Field Championships in October. 4 Tournament Round up - continued Havering Queens Jubilee Youth Tournament - 21 st April 2012 Nearly 40 young archers from South Essex and East London lined up to shoot a National round. This is one event we consider to be an ideal tournament for young archers irrespective of experience and ability due to its organisation and friendly atmosphere. Apart from the odd cloud, being a bit breezy and rather cool, the weather treated us well. Mayflower sported a team of 7, all seemed to enjoy themselves and most came away with an award of some kind including the compound archers who are not eligible for the team award, which is for recurve archers only. 1 st James Howell National u18 Compound with about 5 six gold ends 2 nd Mark Robinson National u18 Compound 3 rd Alan Vale National u18 Compound 3 rd Matthew Edson Junior National u14 Recurve 4 th James Gridley Junior National u14 Recurve 1 st Grace Butterfield Sh Jun National u12 Recurve 4 th Emily Owens Sh Jun National u12 Recurve Team award Best Gold James Howell Mayflower 2 nd with Grace Butterfield, Matt Edson and James Gridley While the results were being compiled, we were treated to a shoot off among the competitors, like a mini head to head round. West Essex Junior Invitation 23 rd June This is another fantastic tournament, ideal for the less experienced archer. Good hosts, friendly atmosphere and judges. Postponed from 5 th May due to a soggy field and poor weather, this time it turned out almost perfect, mostly sunny and only a breeze. Mayflower sported another team of 7 of a field of 33 young archers where quite a few had only just completed a beginner s course. Only your best scores will be collected and sent to GNAS to be entered with other juniors around the country. We know that July is a very busy month, but any time you are at the field, you ll be encouraged to shoot the round and submit a score. Normal tournament rules apply, six sighters etc., but should you shoot the equivalent as part of a longer round, I ll accept it. Just complete a separate score sheet for it. Shoot the round as many times as you like and only your best score will be submitted. However, you can submit more than one score if you shoot the round using a different bowstyle then submit them all. Six dozen arrows, 4 at the longer distance and 2 at the shorter distance. Age as of 30th June. Distances given below. Roger will have blank score sheets for you and collect and submit your scores. With any luck, results should be in October Junior News. 7 Reader s reports We shall go back to the Clout at Woodford on the 7 th April? I always enjoy the Clout at Woodford, it s something different to normal shooting!, you shoot up in the air and down to a circle marked out on the ground! With just a flag for guidance! You then have to walk the circle with a tape market with colours for the scores! I would recommend everyone tries this competition as its fun, no-one laughs at you if you miss or shoot through the flag! Which is in my eyes a brilliant shot!! At this shoot Mayflower had, James, Sam, Mark and me! I came first in my age group. This shoot is a good practice ready for the county competition, where I hold a badge for a six gold end!!! The following weekend (13 th April to 15) we travelled away for the weekend to Chippenham, the competition was a two-day metric/fita. Sophie brown also came down for this one. Saturday morning up early to face rain..real hard rain, we found the field at the bottom off the farmers track and it was like a mud festival! Really cold and windy also! But everyone was in good spirits! All caked in mud! The sun did come out for a while but not enough to dry the mud! After a long day shooting with people from different clubs we were glad to get back to the hotel for a wash!! Then out for dinner, Day 2: no rain!! But cold, shooting with different people again, a good long weekend but I came home with a trophy, Saturday 21 st (two day field event panther) My dad was judging for this event, so I was on my own with 3 others, Mum was in the kitchen cooking burgers and making tea!! I was booked to shoot here on the Saturday, I love the field competitions, (last year i achieved a national record here) again something different, and a challenge, hiking boots on and rucksacks, we were split into our teams, we have 24 targets spread around the woods, and you shoot from coloured pegs! For Half the targets you have to judge the distance and sight marks! (That s a challenge in itself) You all start at different points around the woods, We shoot around trees, uneven ground and different targets, 4 spot, bunnies, 60cm and 80cm targets. Some people shot the trees and lost arrows!! At the end of the first day 1 was in first place! So I decided to do the second day also on the Sunday! This time the course is changed so you go into the unknown again! I met people from Wales and Ireland shooting here and everyone is so friendly, and no dad to moan at me!! After a long weekend and dropping some points on the Sunday I did win overall. (it s a shame no more Mayflower archers don t do this shoot, its great fun and different. Club shoot on the Saturday was really bad!! Wet and high winds, driving rain and not fun!! But I was there!!!... Dad judged again and helped cars off the field, which became stuck! On the 6 th May a very early start and a 2 hour car journey I went to Northampton to shoot a metric 3, the day was brilliant, sunny and quite warm, no wets needed here, had a brilliant day, made 7 new friends in the archery world!! I won this event which makes it worthwhile travelling! I love this sport and I love the challenge when I travel around the different competitions, you meet lots of different people and share shooting tips! If you re having a bad day they pick you up and make you laugh at your mistakes, I have asked several people to come along and try archery when we have our family day, lets all get together and make our junior club one off the best! Don t be afraid to try different competitions its all experience, and you make loads of friends. No one laughs at you when you make mistakes they laugh with you! Alex Body Page 7

8 Reader s Reports It s been quite busy summer, in April and i did a short junior national in Hornchurch and I cant remember where I came because it was to long ago, it wasn't one of best shoots because it was very cold and windy. In early May me and dad went to the bill tucker memorial again in was cold and windy but not as bad as Hornchurch, this was my first western round and I got my 6 gold end. They all had to embarrass me by bringing me up in front of every one and saying my name, because I was the only girl in my target I had to walk 4 steps off the line then walk back on again between details, I have never done this before and it felt a bit strange. the day got better as I won (because I was the only girl of my age group there) BUT... I claimed a county record not only that, dad won too plus I got a BIG chocolate coin. I love chocolate! and we celebrated with a McDonald's on the way back! On the 2nd of June we went to Noak Hill for another western this time coming 3rd behind Grace and Lauren from Rayleigh. The week after that we went back to Noak Hill for county championships as I went up an age group this the first time I shot a Bristol 4 and I came 2nd I'm So Proud. As the West Essex was rescheduled to a later date I was shooting up an age group with others as it was good practise for the nationals. BRING IT ON!!!! from Emily O!!! Essex Junior Champs On Friday the 9 th of June our Junior Archers attended the Essex County Junior Target Championships. The team arrived full of energy and excitement for the upcoming tournament and regardless of the near hurricane standard wind, spirits and excitement stayed high. The day started with the weather being kind to us all and was looking to be a great day for shooting, suddenly at about 10 o clock, Mother Nature began her days work and keeping the arrows on the arrow rests became a task in itself, but, in spite of the atrocious weather conditions, the Mayflower team stood tall and trooped on. A great day was had by every member of the team and the weather did not interrupt a fantastic day of shooting. James Howell FITA Field Archery experience Prior to the County Field Championships, last year I arranged an afternoon of FITA Field archery at Panther Bowhunters. As this type of archery is becoming more popular with members, I plan to run it again probably late August or September for a full afternoon with a double round, 24 targets. I know this is a busy time, but before I organise too much too soon, I would appreciate some idea of how many members are interested and dates they wish me to avoid. Whether you ve shot the round before and need more sight marks or would like to find out what it s all about, please let me know as soon as you can. See me at club or me at re.glover@btopenworld.com Roger Glover Page 8

9 Reader s Reports Paralympics Test Event The Paralympic games are approaching and I was lucky enough to have been chosen to help in the games along with Mark Robinson, David Fall, Sam Yeates and Bill Whybrow and with 3 other archers from various Essex Clubs (Alice Hall, Adam Sartain and Laurie Clarke) aka The Young Games Makers. In preparation for the games and to assist with the training of the Young Games Makers an archery test event took place on the 5 th and 6 th May. This test event involved the YGM s (Young Games Makers) being arrow collectors for the athletes taking part in the event. The atmosphere around the stadium was electric and the cultural diversity of archers and fans from all over the globe made the stadium come alive. Our role involved 4 members of the team at a time, per end, lining up behind the targets; collecting the archer s arrows in plastic tubes and then heading back to the shooting line, handing the arrows back to the athletes and their agents. The knowledge and experience that I gained from the event was incredible and the entire event allowed me to see the techniques and different ways of shooting brought from the far corners of the globe, to the London 2012 Paralympic Games. I cannot wait for the actual event to take place at the end of August and gaining the opportunity to see these incredible archers shoot for their country again. James Howell Editor s notes: Thank you for all our reader s contributions for this issue. These have made it far more pleasurable to produce. You ve now read James s report on the paralympic test event and I think this is a superb reflection on the quality of Mayflower and Essex young archers, not just for their shooting ability, but also for their attitude towards the sport and supporting a major international event. Further, you ve probably read about Phil Madeley (Mayflower) on the Club and County websites who was also at the test event, but we now learn that Steve Fenton is acting as host to the archers at the able bodied Olympic event. More good reflections for Mayflower. European Grand Prix, Cyprus 4 th to 10 th June I m always happy to report good news and achievements from proud parents, but now it s my turn! Following two GB squad camps earlier this year, Phil Glover was invited to represent GBR at the Cyprus GP. For Phil this would be his 3 rd international appearance for GBR, but the first two were as a student. Phil ranked 2 nd in qualifying, shot solidly throughout the eliminations to lose ground in the semi finals for the bronze medal play off, but was back on form to comfortably win the bronze medal match. His team mate, Pauline Burfitt was ranked 1 st in qualifying thus the combined scores ranked the pair 1 st for the team matches. Pauline went on to win individual Gold and the pair won mixed compound Team Gold. 11 Sayings that could apply to archery Looking back through some old newsletters, I found the following written by Julie Bishop in March 2001 and thought they might still be applicable. Attitudes are contagious. Is yours worth catching? Many times the difference between failure and success is doing something nearly right.. or doing it exactly right. We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails Thank you for the words of wisdom, Julie. Hope you don t mind me copying them. In the same news letter, the founder of the Junior Club, Ken Gray reports that. Last year was probably our best ever year in competition. 18 of our Juniors entered a total of 32 Open Tournaments, 17 of them winning awards. We won 82 medals; 58 Gold, 15 Silver and 9 Bronze. Ken also reports among other things that junior members broke 29 county records and 5 members, on more than one occasion, represented Essex at intercounty matches. Not bad since Mayflower Juniors had only been in existence for 6 years. Keep up the good work. Guessing Time OK, so you saw the picture on the front page. So Who are these guilty persons at the Junior National Outdoor Championships in 2005? Six of them are easy to guess even if you ve been around only just a few years. Left to right, back row Michael Judd, Phil Glover, Aaron Vaughan, Michael Markham. Left to right, front row: George Fenton, Tom Pow, Luke Jarrold. Stephen Horne was also at the tournament, but missed the photo opportunity. Mayflower Distance Awards These are designed for the new archer to measure their own progress in the early stages. When a given score is attained at a given distance, it is understood that you are competent enough to progress to the next distance. Coloured badges are awarded according to the distance shot and all you need to do is shoot 36 arrows and attain a score of 200 with no misses. The awards are: Black 20 yards; White 30 yards; Blue 40 yards; Red 50 yards; Gold 60 yards; Green 80 yards. There is no fee, no judges or supervisor. Just set the stand with a 122 cm face at your chosen distance, starting at 20 yards anytime you like, record your three scores on separate score sheets, keep them and claim your badge from David Scorah. Easy isn t it? Archery GB Progress Awards Mayflower have now subscribed to this award scheme for juniors. It is designed to provide beginners and younger archers with awards for developing their archery skills and the scheme can also be used as an adult beginner incentive. Badges will be awarded by target face colours, white, black, blue, red and gold according to scores. Scores that need to be attained vary according to age, sex, bowstyle and distance shot. They are more applicable to an outdoor range, but as we are shooting outdoors all year now there will be opportunities to continue during the winter months. See Carron Brown for full details of scores and how to get them. Page 11
