JULY/AUGUST 2018 NEWSLETTER Dear Fellow Members, President s Message On June 9 th, we held our President s Dance, an annual event honoring our past presidents and welcoming our new Life Members. It was a great evening and it was truly wonderful to have so many people attend the event this year! A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the President s Award, to Liz Saunders, in recognition of her many contributions and volunteering as a member of the Club. Liz Saunders has served our Society in so many capacities: Liz has been the Recording Secretary, and currently is the Financial Secretary; she is the Chair of the Central Connecticut Celtic Committee, which organizes our beloved Greater Hartford St. Patrick s Day Parade. She is also a bartender at the Club, always serving you with a smile and a cheerful hello. In addition to all of these contributions, she also serves as the Chair of the Hartford Feis, which has become our largest yielding fundraiser and cultural event for the Club. Speaking of the Feis.this years Feis was held June 3 rd and it was another outstanding event! The weather could not have been more perfect, and we had well over 400 dancers. Well done Liz! Many thanks to all those who volunteered before, during and after the event, as this truly helps make the event a success. We are in the process of nominations for Officer and Director Positions. This process is important to our organization to help decide on our future leaders. Contact information for members of the Nominating Committee are contained within this newsletter. Please keep in mind the downstairs hall is only available for rent to members in good standing. 2 INTERESTED IN A LEADERSHIP ROLE IN YOUR CLUB? The Nominating Committee is seeking individuals who wish to run for one of the open Board of Director positions or any Officer position. We currently have a 2 year term and a 3 year term Board position open. Each Officer position is for a term of 1 year: President, Vice President, Recording Secretary, Treasurer, Financial Secretary, Membership Secretary, Assistant Membership Secretary, Corresponding Secretary or Sargent-at-Arms. ELECTIONS If an election is required, there will be two sessions held as follows: Sunday, September 30, 2018, from 2 to 4 pm. and Friday, October 5, 2018, from 6 to 8 pm. Results will be announced on October 5 th following tabulation. If an election will be held, watch our website, Facebook page and notices posted at the Club for more information. Voting will occur in the Upstairs Hall. You must be a Member in Good Standing as of March 31, 2018 to be eligible to vote. You must also present your Membership Card to cast your vote. VOLUNTEERS Please check the Sign up Genius link on our webpage for current and upcoming volunteer opportunities. We need help on Friday nights both at the door welcoming members and in the kitchen for Pub Grub. If you would rather volunteer via or phone call, please contact Elizabeth O Leary at (860) president@irishamericanhome.com SIGN IN YOUR GUESTS!! PROTECT YOUR CLUB! State liquor control laws mandate that private clubs maintain a guest book where nonmember guests are required to register and be signed in by the member. Please ensure that your guests are properly signed in help protect your club! Failure to comply with the liquor laws may result in fines or other penalties such as closure of our pub for a period determined by the Liquor Control Commission. Please remember that you are responsible for the conduct of your guests and they must depart the premises when you depart no exceptions. This is your club protect it at all times! Thank you for your cooperation. YOUR HOME BASE FOR BASEBALL Catch all the baseball action this season with MLB Extra the IAHS. Watch up to 90 out-of-market games each week. From Boston to San Diego, Miami to Seattle we got it covered. Drink specials daily during games 2 HARTFORD GAA RESCHEDULED The Hartford GAA will hold its annual golf tournament on Saturday, August 25th at Tallwood Country Club, Hebron, CT. Lunch will be at 12 noon followed by a shotgun start at 1 pm. Scramble format. Dinner at 7 pm at the Irish American Home. Cost $135 per player for 18 holes, cart, range balls, gift, on course prizes, lunch and dinner, including a two hour open bar. Come on down to the Irish Home to cheer on your football team as they have three home matches in July! The games will be contested on Saturdays: July 7, 14 and 28, all at 5 pm. See Hartfordgaa.com and the club calendar to confirm dates and times. Friday, July 6 th Friday July 6th the HGAA will be attending and participating in Irish Heritage Night at the Hartford Yard Goats. We still have Rising Up and Reaching Out HGAA T-Shirts available for sale and encourage all to wear your HGAA and county colors on the night! The Irish Club will be providing a unique opportunity to allow new members to be screened and sworn in that night at the ball park! A table will be set up, and Board members will be available to screen members and our President Liz O Leary will be on hand to swear them in. All the same rules apply as if this were happening at the Club the prospective new member must be accompanied by a member in good standing, and be prepared to pay their initiation fee and dues that evening. We are showing broadcasts of all the games LIVE from Ireland! The IAHS purchased the 2018 season package to show all the games from Premium Sports. There is a $20 charge to view the games, however, there is still time to purchase a MEMBERS ONLY SEASON PASS for the spectacular price of $250! That s right only $250 to view every game! For our first Friday in September, we will have a new band The Coracles from the New Haven area, and Dually Noted will be back by popular demand. 3 IRISH NORTHERN AID The Hartford Unit of Irish Northern Aid meets the 3 rd Friday of every month at 8 pm in the Upstairs Hall of the Irish American Home. Since 1970, the Irish Northern Aid Committee has been at the forefront in support of the struggle for freedom, justice, and selfdetermination for all the people of Ireland. The AOH is an Irish Catholic organization that promotes and encourages participation in our religion, charity and Irish culture, following the motto, In Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity. Please visit our website for further information: *************************************************************************** Memorial Funds Please consider naming one of two funds the IAHS has established over the years to receive memorial donations upon your passing. Both funds are intended to memorialize our deceased loved ones while benefiting our members. The first is our Scholarship Fund which was established to grant educational scholarships to the children of members in good standing. Scholarships are awarded in June of each year. The second fund is our Building Renovation Fund, established to help fund the proposed new building and any additional renovation needs for the existing building. Sympathy to the Family of: Brenda Clemens (mother of Nancy McHugh) Get Well Wishes are extended to: Patty Merrick 3 IRISH SET DANCE CLASSES Traditional Irish country set dancing classes are held on Wednesday evenings (except the fourth Wednesday of the month). This is a cultural function of the Irish American Home Society and there is no charge. The only requirements are hard-soled shoes and a little stamina. Classes begin at 7 pm. For more information, please call John Droney at (860) IRISH LANGUAGE CLASSES Irish Language Classes will be starting back up at the Club in September. There is room in the Intermediate Class for anyone who has previously studied the Irish language. We will also be offering a beginners class for anyone with little or no previous experience with the Irish language. Board Members will be available for screening beginning at 6 pm on meeting nights (the 2 nd Friday of each month) and new members will be sworn in by the President during the monthly meeting that begins at 7:30 pm WEEKLY CARD GAME Enjoy playing cards? Every Thursday evening at 7 pm. in the downstairs lounge, members and guests are invited to join in a friendly game of Setback. HONOR GUARD It is this Society s tradition to honor our deceased members by the presence of an Honor Guard at the funeral service and interment. While we have several dedicated members who faithfully participate in this tradition, we would like to ensure a full complement at each service. If you are interested in participating when the need arises, please contact Charlie Murray at (860) or Kathleen Blake at (860) The Honor Guard will participate in the funeral services for all members when the member has previously requested or the family requests our services.
