Hile-Nepfel was one of four women s basketball legends honored along with players Valerie Gillon and Brittany Lindhe and her husband, Bill Nepfel. Just prior to the opening of the season, Hile-Nepfel was appointed as an interim Assistant Athletic Director and Senior Women s Administrator (SWA), following the departure of her mentor, Sandee Hill, who retired after nearly three decades of distinguished service on the Hilltop. JENNIFER KATSUYAMA RETURNS FOR 2006 WCC PLAY: Junior guard Jennifer Katsuyama was thought likely miss the entire season due to a knee injury, but made a welcome return to the starting lineup January 6 for a win against Pepperdine. The knee was injured in a game last season at Loyola Marymount (2/5/05). Katsuyama averaged 5.9 points, 2.4 rebounds and ranked second on the team in assists with 2.4. During West Coast Conference play, Katsuyama 7.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists and scored a career-high with 15 points against the Lions. KASIA KURZATKOWSKA TO MISS ENTIRE SEASON: Junior center Kasia Kurzatkowska tore her ACL during a preseason practice and will miss the entire campaign. LEEANE JENSEN AND JENNI JONES NAMED TEAM CO-CAPTAINS: With only two seniors on the roster, USF looked to its veterans for leadership and selected both - sixthyear center Leeane Jensen and forward Jenni Jones - as team captains for the season. The Dons have seven upper-classmen on the roster, but two are out for the season due to injury - junior guards Jennifer Katsuyama and Charmaine Ramos and two are transfers - junior center Kasia Kurzatkowska and junior forward Nickie Warren. FOUR INDIVIDUALS MAKE LEGENDS OF THE HILLTOP LIST: Four individuals with ties to the University of San Francisco women s basketball program were recognized as Legends of the Hilltop, honoring the top 75 fi gures in Green and Gold history on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the University of San Francisco. Three USF Hall of Fame players - Valerie Gillon ( ), Mary Hile ( ) and Brittany Lindhe ( ) were honored along with former co-head coach Bill Nepfel ( ). All four honorees have a connection with the Dons three consecutive West Coast Conference Tournament Championships and subsequent NCAA berths ( ), highlighted by a trip to the 1996 Sweet-16. A two-time WCC Tournament MVP, Gillon ranks ninth in scoring (1,188) and 10th in rebounds (652) despite playing just three seasons on the Hilltop. Hile-Nepfel fi nished her career as the most prolifi c scorer in USF Basketball history (men or women), pouring in 2,324 points and currently is the all-time coaching wins leader, entering the season with 261 in 18 years at the helm. The only four-time All-WCC First Team selection in league history, Lindhe left the Hilltop ranked second in scoring with 1,619 career points. Nepfel served as co-coach for the Dons and compiled 196 victories in 13 seasons, beginning in ODWALLA CLASSIC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: MVP - Courtney Paris - Oklahoma, Ashley Paris - Oklahoma; Erin Higgins - Oklahoma; Crystal Smith - Iowa; Lisa Olden - USF; Nickie Warren - USF DONS NOTCH PROGRAM VICTORY NUMBER 425: San Francisco picked up its 400th win with a victory at Saint Mary s in the 2003 West Coast Conference opener.
