2 INSIDE THE MATCHUP North Texas lost its fifth straight game in a road loss at UT Arlington on Dec. 3. The Mean Green couldn t overcome missing 18 free throws and got out-rebounded by 18 in a defeat. This will be the second meeting all-time between North Texas and Southern Illinois. The teams haven t met since Dec. 13, 1975 at the Creighton Classic where the Mean Green came away with a overtime win. It was the first year of the Bill Blakeley Era who holds 134 career coaching victories in eight seasons. SIU enters with a 7-1 record having won two straight against Portland (W, 80-79) and SEMO (W, 74-50). The Salukis only loss came against C-USA member UTEP on Nov. 27, 71-66, at the Corpus Christi Coastal Challenge. SIU is led by Anthony Beane Jr. who is averaging 19.9 points per game (39th nationally) and has scored 1,459 career points placing him 12 all-time at Southern Illinois. Sean O Brien has posted three-straight double-doubles. Juco transfer Mike Rodriguez is leading the team with 35 assists and third in scoring at 10.8 points per game. The two teams will meet again next Saturday, Dec. 12 in Carbondale, Illinois. J-Mychal Reese had a team high 16 points, Deckie Johnson also had 16 points, Carrington Ward added 10 off the bench, Combs scored nine points and Ja Michael Brown had eight points. Open for 3!! - North Texas is shooting a bunch of three pointers this season and has made 47 in seven games this season. The Mean Green are averaging 6.7 makes per contest and have hit a three pointer in 58 straight games dating back to Dec. 21, 2013 when North Texas went 0-for-9 from downtown against Wayland Baptist. Sophomore Leader - Sophomore Jeremy Combs continues to lead the team in scoring (14.6 points per game) after adding nine points, eight rebounds, three steals and was 3-for-6 from the foul line. He tied his career high with three blocks against Troy. Block Party - The Mean Green set a new season high with six blocks against Troy. Combs tied his career high with three, Allante Holston had two and Rickey Brice Jr. added one. North Texas added four blocks against Samford (L, 74-72). They had five blocks against Idaho in a loss. North Texas had four blocks at UT Arlington with Combs having two in the loss. Welcome AJ Lawson - The early signing period started Nov. 12, North Texas picked up a Top-20 recruit in the state of Texas in AJ Lawson (Bryan high school). Lawson was ranked No. 18 in the state and No. 110 in the nation. A 6-foot-5 combo guard from Bryan, averaged 22 points per game and seven rebounds as a junior last season. Reese Running The Show - Junior J-Mychal Reese has been steady at the point guard position scoring a team-high 16 points against Idaho and has hit 23-for-31 from the free throw line, making his first 14 in a row. Reese added 16 points at UT Arlington and dished out three assists. The Dunk Counter - Sophomore forward Jeremy Combs continue to be the best dunker on the team. Combs defended his dunk title at NT Madness in a close competition. Combs finished his freshman season with 10 dunks. Combs already has 11 dunks in seven games. Deckie Johnson and Eric Katenda each threw down a slam against Texas College. The Mean Green will take on Southern Illinois on the road (Dec. 12) on ESPN3 and a road game at Creighton (Dec. 21) on Fox Sports One. The other eight games will be played at the American Sports Network: at UTSA (Jan. 1), at UTEP (Jan. 3), Rice (Jan. 9), Southern Miss. Evans is a veteran of 205 victories and six postseason bids in 14 years as a head coach at Arizona State and Ole Miss, where he earned the SEC and National Coach of the Year honors in First-Class Staff - The NT staff collectively owns over 100 years of collegiate coaching experience, and still features associate head coach Rob Evans, who has 205 head coaching wins and 14 postseason appearances at Arizona State and Ole Miss. Assistant coach David Anwar spent six seasons at Nebraska and is a 14-year collegiate coaching veteran. Scott Monarch has been in coaching since 1990 and spent five years alongside Buzz Williams at New Orleans and Marquette. Director of Operations Todd Shelton was a part of the St. John s NCAA Tournament team in 2003 and has numerous experience coaching high school basketball.
