UAB leads 3-0 UAB (1-2, 0-0) BLAZERS Like High Point, the Blazers enter Tuesday s showdown looking to move to.500 on the year. UAB opened the year with a win over the Big South s Gardner-Webb before falling to DePaul and Belmont by double figures. UAB returns only one starter from last season s squad that went last season. The Blazers were picked to finish ninth in the 14-team Conference USA. Coming off the bench in the team s first three games, freshman Miyah Barnes is pacing UAB with 16.0 points per game and is second in minutes (29.7 mpg). The lone returning starter, sophomore Deanna Kuzmanic, averaged 12.0 points per game last year while knocking down 74 three-pointers. Her numbers have dipped early this year points per contest and just three triples - despite playing 32.0 minutes per game. HPU figures to have an advantage at the free throw line with the Blazers hitting just on the year (45 percent). On a roster than includes eight freshmen, the top four scorers on the team are college rookies. No. Name Pos. Big South Network All-Time Series with the Blazers UAB and HPU have met three times on the hardwood with the Blazers taking home three wins by an average margin of 10 points per game. Last season in the Cancun Challenge, UAB earned a victory despite a 14-point outing by Kaylah Keys. Against the Conference USA The Panthers are 1-9 all-time against current members of the Conference USA with the win coming against UNC Charlotte in Feb The three most recent contests have come against UAB. Keys is Climbing Senior Kaylah Keys is 62 points from tying Shamia Brown for HPU s Division I scoring record. She also is within striking distance of breaking the D-I record for three-pointers and free throws made. The Memphis, Tenn. product is the leading active scorer in the Big South Conference and is 12th among active players nationally. The guard also ranks 19th in scoring in Big South history and needs 17 points to move past Holly Bottar of Coastal Carolina into 18th. Likewise, she needs nine three-pointers to move into the top-10 on the league s three-pointers made list. Everyone Returns (Almost) A season after replacing nine departures with seven new faces, the Purple & White only have to replace one player from last season s team - Aariel Allen. High Point returns four starters and a large percentage of every major statistical category from last year: Scoring: 1,919 of 2,015 (95 percent) Rebounding: 983 of 1,109 (89 percent) Assists: 361 of 374 (96 percent) Steals: 229 of 251 (91 percent) Three-Pointers: 171 of 171 (100 percent) Minutes: 5,764 of 6,240 (92 percent) Figuring out the Rotation Last season, the Panthers started Kat Harris, Kaylah Keys, Emma Bockrath, Haleigh Hatfield and Aariel Allen in 30 of the team s 31 contests. Of the group, only Keys missed a start as Bre Davis started at Elon. This year is a different story so far as seven players have earned a start with two different groups. Reserve Impact Coming into Sunday, HPU s bench had registered 45 percent of the team s scoring (62-137) and half the rebounds (48-96). But only mustered seven points and nine rebounds in the setback at Ole Miss. The team s leading scorer has come off the bench in two of the three games this year as Lindsey Edwards led the way against Ohio (11 points) before Bre Davis racked up 15 against Brevard BIG SOUTH PRESEASON POLL Rk. FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE POINT FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE FREE THROW PERCENTAGE REBOUNDING MARGIN -6.6 Kaylah Keys TOP SCORER Miyah Barnes Shea Morgan TOP REBOUNDER Imani Johnson Well... They are Free High Point led the Big South and was 30th nationally in free throw percentage last season (74.9 percent) and is off to a 39-of-53 start this year (73.6 percent). Junior Kat Harris led the league last year knocking down.830 of her free throw attempts on the year. Shea Morgan (.920), Kaylah Keys (.837) and Haleigh Hatfield (.803) joined Harris shooting over 80 percent. Keys has made 83.9 percent of her career free-point percentage, which ranks third all-time in the Big South record books. Long-Range Success The Panthers drilled 171 of their 524 three-pointers last season to lead the conference shooting at a.326 clip. Kat Harris and Kaylah Keys each shot over 35 percent on the year as Keys knocked down 62 of her 177 attempts and Harris drilled 42-of-103. The squad is (.340) from beyond the arc this season after knocking down 3-of-11 against Mississippi. Bockrath Finished Strong Over the final 18 contests Emma Bockrath upped her average to 13.0 points per game while scoring at least nine points in all but one of those games. Over the first 13 contests, Bockrath shot 35 percent (35- of-100) before knocking down 87 of her 211 shots over the final 18 outings (.412). The lefty attempted 1.4 free throws per contest through the first 13 games, but then upped her average to 3.0 attempts over the final 18. Up-Tempo Offense Since Hendrix took over at HPU, the Purple & White are tallying points per contest. That s a 3.52 increase over the program s average in the 13 years of Division I prior to her arrival. HPU has finished in the top-2 in the Big South in scoring average each of the past three seasons and is third in the early going this season (66.3). Youth on the Court, Youth on the Sideline Despite returning 12 players from last year s team HPU still has 10 underclassmen compared to four upperclassmen. According to research performed by Eastern Michigan, High Point has the second youngest coaching staff in Division I women s basketball as the three coaches have an average age of 28.7 years. Only McNesse State has a younger group (27.3 years). Preseason All-Conference Honors Senior Kaylah Keys was named to the Preseason All-Big South First Team for the third straight season. Meanwhile, sophomore Emma Bockrath garnered second team accolades. Hendrix on the Panther s Cubs On Camryn Brown: Camryn is a true point guard who is a gritty and heady player. She understands the game from the point, but can also score. On Carol-Anne Obusek and Olivia VanSlooten: We were able to bring in size this year, thankfully, with two 6-3 kids in Carol-Anne and Olivia. C-A is more of a shot-blocker who adds size in the rebounding area while Olivia is the same way with a strong body that gets in there and effects the paint. Hendrix Coaching Records DeUnna Hendrix was the fastest coach in HPU s Division I era to achieve 50 wins and owns two of the program s four 20-win seasons since the switch to D-I in Under Hendrix, the Panthers have posted a record in Big South play, which gives the Kokomo, Ind. native a.654 conference winning percentage - the best at HPU. Robertson Returns Stacia Robertson - the program s only AP All-American - has returned to the Triad after playing professionally in Australia and Turkey to serve as High Point Director of Basketball Operations. Hailey Yohn was the Director of Ops. last season, but has moved into an assistant coaching role this season.
