The Panthers have not posted a 3-0 start to the season since the campaign when HPU opened with a 5-0 mark at the Division II level. The Div. 1 era began in u The Panthers won the Rainbow Classic with a title game victory over Hawai i on Nov. 18. The game was televised live on ESPN2 as part of ESPN s 24-hour College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon. It marked HPU s first appearance on ESPN2 since u The Panthers trailed by nine (51-42) with less than seven minutes to play, but put together a meticulous 20-3 run down the stretch to race to a comeback victory. u Redshirt-junior John Brown led HPU with 19 points (9-18 FG) against the Rainbow Warriors and was named Rainbow Classic MVP after averaging 19.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg and a 55.2 FG% in the event. u Senior guard Devante Wallace earned Rainbow Classic All- Tournament Team honors after averaging 15.0 ppg and a teamhigh 6.0 rpg. He posted a career-best 32 points (7-11 3pt FG) in the 4OT win over Bakersfield to open the season. u The Panthers defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 74-62, on Saturday in game two of the event. First meeting PAW PRINTS RICHMOND (1-1) SPIDERS Brown made his debut in the game and led the Panthers with 19 points (7-11 FG). u HPU opened the Rainbow Classic with a victory over Bakersfield in four overtimes on Nov. 14. Trailing with eight seconds left in 4OT, Brian Richardson stole a CSUB inbounds pass and dished a perfect pass to Tarique Thompson to send HPU home with the win. u With one 3-pointer vs. Richmond, Devante Wallace will move past Zione White ( ) and into solo sixth place on HPU s all-time 3-pointers made list. Both players are tied for sixth currently with 128 career treys. u The Panthers were picked to finish second in the Big South preseason poll, as voted on by the league s head coaches and media. Coastal Carolina (297 points, 14 first place votes) was picked to win the league, while HPU earned 293 points and grabbed 12 first place votes. u Redshirt-junior John Brown has been named the Big South Preseason Player of the Year for the second-straight campaign. The Jacksonville, Fla., native earned Big South Player of the Year honors in and was an AP All-America Honorable Mention selection. u Over the past two seasons, HPU leads the Big South in conference wins (24), conf. winning percentage (.750) and is the only school to make back-to-back post-season appearances (2014 NIT, 2013 CIT). HPU also is one of just 44 programs in the country to post a conf. winning percentage of.750 or better over the past two seasons. 3 Last Time Out - HPU 62, Hawai i 54 Stan Sheriff Center - Honolulu, Hawaii Nov. 18, 2014 HONOLULU - The High Point University men s basketball team is 3-0 for the first time in the Division I era after rocketing past Hawai i on Tuesday Nov. 18 to win the Rainbow Classic title. The back-and-forth game proved to be a worthy inclusion in ESPN s 24-hour College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon.The Panthers trailed by nine (51-42) with less than seven minutes to play, but put together a meticulous 20-3 run down the stretch to race to a comeback victory in the program s first appearance on ESPN2 since In all, the Panthers outscored the Rainbow Warriors in the second half and made big shots and free throws when they counted most down the stretch. HPU shot 37.5 percent from the field (21-56) while limiting Hawai i to just a 31.4 percent clip. The Purple & White were out-shot from the free-throw line, 14-5, in the first half, but the Panthers made 14-of-17 (.824) from the charity stripe in the decisive second half while Hawai I connected on just 6-of- 11 attempts (.545). HPU also held advantages in assists (13-5) and rebounds (37-35) in the game. A LOOK AT THE SPIDERS Richmond was picked to finish fifth out of 14 teams in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll. The Spiders return 10 letter winners and 4-of-5 starters from a squad that posted a record, including an 8-8 league mark. The team is 1-1 in after defeating Radford in its season opener (64-46) and falling at Old Dominion, 63-57, on Nov. 18. Richmond is led by preseason All-A-10 first team selection Kendall Anthony. The 5-foot-8-inch point guard leads the Spiders with 13.0 ppg after averaging 18.7 ppg in conference play last season en route to second team All-A-10 accolades. HISTORY vs. RICHMOND Saturday s game will mark the first-ever matchup between High Point and Richmond in men s basketball. HISTORY vs. A-10 OPPONENTS HPU is 2-4 all-time against current members of the Atlantic-10 Conference. The two Panther wins came against Virginia Commonwealth (109-77) on Jan. 15, 1969, in High Point, and Davidson (51-43) during the campaign. In the most recent meeting with an A-10 foe, HPU fell to Duquesne in Pittsburgh on Nov. 14, 2008 in the season opener. The Raeford, N.C., native is averaging 13.3 ppg and 5.3 rpg and poured in a career-best 19 points and seven rebounds in the 4OT win over Bakersfield on Nov. 14. Thompson started 2-of-3 games in Hawai i. MARATHON MEN Friday s 4OT marathon marked the longest game in the HPU Division I era and featured an incredible 29 ties and 24 lead changes. To put things in perspective, there were just two 4OT games in Division I college basketball during the entire season. VMI won at Gardner-Webb ( , 2/15/14) and Arkansas State won at UALR ( , 3/14/14). 100-POINT MAGIC The Panthers 100-point effort against Bakersfield on Nov. 14 marked the 85th time in program history HPU has posted 100 points in a game. HPU is 80-5 all-time in those contests, including a perfect 13-0 mark in the DI era. HPU has won its last 33 games when it scores 100 or more. Prior to Friday s game, the Panthers last posted 100+ points on Nov. 21, 2009 vs. Hampton-Sydney (W, ). The last 100-point effort against a DI opponent came in a win over VMI on Feb. 24, OPENING WITH A BANG With the victory over Bakersfield Friday, HPU is now alltime in season openers, including an 9-7 mark in the Division I era. The Panthers are now 7-3 all-time in neutral site openers, including a 2-2 Division I mark. HPU has now won five of its last six season debuts. ROAD WARRIORS The Panthers begin the regular season with six of their first seven games away from the Millis Center. HPU has not opened the season with that many road/neutral site contests since , when HPU played its first eight contests away from the Millis Center. WALLACE SHARPSHOOTS HIS WAY TO HPU RECORD Through three seasons at HPU, Devante Wallace is the program s career leader in three-point percentage at.434 ( ), well ahead of second-place George Byers (42.5 percent from ). Wallace s 128 three-pointers rank t-6th in a career and his 78 three-pointers in ranked third most in HPU single season history. His point field goal percentage last season ranked second in the nation and set a new Big South record for 3-point percentage. THEY RE BAAACCCKKK The Panthers return 11 letter winners and all five starters from a squad that captured the Big South regular season title (12-4 league record) and earned the first NIT berth in program history. The team returns 85.5 percent of its scoring and 81.7 percent of its rebounding from a season ago.
